<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
1
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

CLOTHING PRESSING MACHINE.
The present invention relates to presses for clothing, and relates more particularly to the provision of means making it possible to adjust the value of the pressure exerted on the garments or on the pressed objects, the value of the pressure being indicated directly and clearly. visible by means of an indicating device.
In mass production, such as in factories where a large number of like garments are manufactured and pressed, it is extremely desirable that the finish of each garment be substantially the same for all. This is true even in the case where a certain number of presses are used to perform the same pressing operation, or else when a single machine is used successively to press all the clothes.
The apparatus has a mechanism for adjusting the pressure by hand to produce the correct pressure desired while allowing its value to be read. In the known devices, means had been provided to ensure the adjustment of the press head according to the varying thicknesses of the various objects to be pressed, but experience has shown that with these devices the adjustments could not be made. provide, for the pressure obtained
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
between the organs of the press, only very vague approximations.
This fact is due not only to the differences existing between the various objects to be pressed, but also to the variations produced 1'use in the linings covering the plate or stationary member of the. hurry.
To the attached drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a press according to the invention, with certain parts broken away and in section,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the lever carrying the head and certain associated parts, the head having been omitted in the figure,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section taken on line 111-111 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a schematic view showing how the pressure gauge directly indicates the total effective force exerted between the press members.
In the drawings, reference numeral 10 denotes the frame of the press, provided with two members 11 and 12 directed upwards and suitably spaced at the rear of the apparatus. The usual plate, fixed to the vertical foot 13, is designated by 14 and cooperates with the head or movable member 15 of the prepse. The head is carried by the front end of a lever preferably having the. form visible in Figures 1, 2 and 3. It comprises two rods or side members 16 and 17 connected together near their anterior ends by means of a @raverse 18, the side members converging towards their rear ends where they form a counterweight 19 or a box forming a counterweight.
The coil is pivoted by a cross member 21 fixed to the upper ends of the oranes 11 and 12 and passing through the hubs 22 and 23 (FIG. 2) closed respectively on the levers 16 and 17.
In the example shown, a toggle mechanism has been triggered, actuated by the operator in the direction of closing of the press.
This mechanism comprises a pedal 24 pivoted to the bsti 10 at 25 and connected to the lower end of a traction rod 26 articulated at the front end of a lever 27 pivoted at 23.'La. rear part
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of said lever constitutes a connecting rod of a first system. rocker whose second connecting rod is indicated at 29. The connecting rod 29 is articulated at 31 to the lower connecting rod 32 of a second rocker system, the other connecting rod of which is designated by 33. The connecting rods 32 and 33 are articulated at 34, while the connecting rod 32 is pivoted at its lower end to the frame 10, for example by the axis 25.
The upper ends of the two plates constituting the connecting rod 33 are articulated, for example at 37a, to the lower arm 35, directed backwards, by an angled lever, the other arm of which, directed upwards, is designated by 36. This angled lever is rotated to. a shaft 37, the ends of which are fixed in members 38 and 39 in the form of hubs secured respectively to the arms 16 and 17 of the lever carrying the head.
The ordinary spring 41, connected to the connecting rod 33 and to a fixed part of the machine, and tensioned when the members 14 and 15 of the press are brought into contact to ensure the pressing, serves to help the counterweight to move the lever carrying the press. head, to the open position of the press.
The lever 27 carries a cushion 70 cooperating with an adjustable stop 71 mounted on a fixed part of the frame.
To allow the various parts to be adjusted to obtain a determined pressure between the. head and the plate, the following means are used, easily adjustable and clearly visible: An eye screw 42, fixed to the cross member 18, is retained by a nut 43 placed on the front face of the cross member and retaining the . screw eye rigidly in the desired position relative to said cross member.
To the eye screw is fixed, by means of a pin 44, a cylinder 45 containing a piston 46, a cup-shaped washer 47, a spring 48, a nut 49 for adjusting the cylinder, and a counter - nut 51 for adjusting the cylinder.
A coupling member 52 is articulated at the upper end of the angled lever 36 and is directed forward from this lever, and in this member 52 is screwed an adjustment rod 53. To this rod is pivoted the hub 54 of ' a maneuvering wheel. This steering wheel
1
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
has the shape shown in Figure 3. It comprises a part 55 in the form of a bell, directed forward, widening and ending in an annular part 56 intended to be gripped in the hands. The flywheel is thus located away from the cylinder 45 while being directed towards the front where it can be easily grasped by the operator to rotate the rod 53 in one or the other direction by varying the effective length thereof. entering into the coupling 52 or a, u on the contrary by removing it.
The steering wheel acts at the same time as a casing preventing any modification of the adjustment, carried out in the factory, of the adjusting nut 49 of the cylinder.
The rod 53 passes through the cylindrical adjusting nut 49 and is provided, inside the cylinder 45, with a thrust ball 57 and a castellated nut 58. The space formed 8 the front part of the cylinder , or the one located in front of the cup-shaped washer, is filled with a liquid, such as vegetable oil having the same position as those used in hydraulic brakes.
In this anterior part of the cylinder comes a connection 59 of a manometer 61 of the type of conventional pressure manometers, using a Bourdon tube. The dial of the manometer (see figure 4) has a special scale, established so that the pressure created in the space at the front end of the cylinder, acting on the Bourdon tube of the manometer and transmitted to the needle of it, indicates the total effective force exerted between the organs of the press. This arrangement is shown more clearly in the schematic view of Figure 4, where we have. suppose that the. total effective force between the press members was 600 kg, as indicated by the needle on the gauge dial.
To obtain this pressure between the members of the press, it is necessary to apply a thrust directed upwards, from the rear of the second tilting system of the press, this thrust being worth 870 kgs and which, transformed by the angled lever 35, 36, produces a thrust of 267 kgs on the. adjustment rod 53. This thrust,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
transformed into pressure in the space filled with fluid, is worth 26 kg / cm square. Due to the reduced value of the second thrust above, it is advantageous to actuate the piston of the hydraulic cylinder from the longer arm 36 of the elbow lever, so as to minimize the amount of pressure exerted on the fluid. in the cylinder and to. thus give the cylinder reduced dimensions.
In the example which has just been indicated, if it were necessary to use directly the thrust of 870 kgs exerted by the system 32-33, the pressure exerted in the cylinder would be of 85 kg / cm square instead of 26 kg / cm square as indicated above. This higher pressure would require a much more robust construction, and the difficulties of ensuring the desired seal between the piston and the cylinder would be increased. Thus, for the particular form of construction described in the above, the dial of the pressure gauge is graduated to indicate a total force exerted between the head and the plate, corresponding to approximately 23 times the pressure exerted on the fluid in the cylinder. .
The upper limit of the pressure gauge scale is thus 1200 kg, corresponding to a pressure of about 52 kg / cm2 in the space containing the fluid. Conversely, a pressure of 171 kg / cm2 would be exerted in the space containing the fluid if the piston working in the cylinder were not connected to the long arm of the elbow lever. It will be noted that the pivot of the elbow lever is located in front of the short arm, i.e., in other words, that the short arm is directed behind the pivot 37.
Any modification in the proportions of the angled lever 35, 36 or in the bore of the cylinder would, of course, require a corresponding modification of the figures inscribed on the dial of the manometer. The principle of transmitting the value of the pressure to a dial, which may be called a proportional scale, indicating the total effective force between the head and the press plate, would however remain the same.
The spring 48 is provided simply for the purpose of returning
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the piston 46 and the cup-shaped washer 47 in the initial position when the pressure between the press members is removed, the piston making, of course, a slight movement to produce the pressure in the fluid .
The cylindrical or wrapped adjusting nut is used primarily for the correct adjustment space of the manometer to zero after filling the front of the cylinder with the fluid in question, and then to maintain the ball stop 57 on the rod 53 The 8-ball stopper ensures easy manual pressure adjustment, even after closing the press and while pressure is already being exerted between the head and the platen.
By bringing the head of the press to the pressing position, there will be an upward thrust in the. upper link 33, which will be transmitted to the crank lever 35, 36 and transformed into a thrust exerted on the adjustment rod 53 and directed towards the front of the press. This last thrust is necessary to produce in the liquid contained in the space the front end of the cylinder the desired pressure, transmitted to the pressure gauge. It is this pressure which will indicate to the operator the exact working conditions of the press under the effect of the various adjustments, and will allow him, by simple rotation of the rod 53 so as to insert it into the press. the coupling 52 or to remove it, to decrease or increase the pressure as required.
As shown, the pressure gauge is located directly in the operator's normal line of sight, the front part of the machine. In addition, the pressure gauge is connected directly to the cylinder and is carried by the latter, forming a member of the pressure indicator mechanism and thus avoiding the need for piping between these two members.
