Sur l'extrémité libre de l'arbre à manivelle 20 est goupillé un levier 22 (fig. 2) qui est relié à la timo nerie de commande (non figurée). Un ressort 23 qui est accouplé par ses extrémités au corps des seg ments 4 tend, par son effet de traction, à les rap procher constamment l'un de l'autre ;
l'articulation des jumelles 8 et 9 sur l'axe 10 étant raidie par l'action de la rondelle Bel leville 11 n'ayant pas pu jouer, le segment 4 et sa paire de jumelles 8 et 9 se sont comportés comme s'ils ne formaient qu'une seule et même pièce ;
Drum brake The present invention relates to a drum brake with high braking efficiency, the wear of which is slow and which is especially intended for use on agricultural vehicles, trailers, motorcycles, as well as for various materials.
This drum brake is characterized by the fact that each segment is connected to its fixed axis of oscillation by at least one element freely pivoted on this axis, on the one hand, and pivoted by means of a hard friction articulation on the segment, on the other hand, the whole so as to allow the segments to take, on their own, the. position required for their rational application in the bore of the drum under the action of the brake control member.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the brake which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a schematic elevation view thereof; fig. 2 is a section along the axis of symmetry AC (fig. 1); figs. 3 and 4 are detail sections. In the embodiment shown, 1 designates the drum which is integral with the rotary member to be braked, 2 the flange fixed rigidly on the axle 3, and 4 the two segments.
These segments have a T-shaped section, the upper arm of which forms the rim of the segment and carries, at its periphery, a friction lining 5, while the middle arm represents the body of the segment. The flask 2 carries, on the same axis of symmetry AC, on either side of the center B, a journal 6 and a sleeve 7.
One end of the body of each segment 4 is connected to the journal 6 by two binoculars 8 and 9 which frame it and which are articulated on an axis 10 which passes through it (fig. 1 and 2).
A steel Belleville washer 11 acting as a spring and resting on the binocular 8 is partially compressed by the head obtained by the riveting of the pin 10 (fig. 4) and constantly maintains the body of the segment. 4 tight between binoculars 8 and 9; the other end of the binoculars 8 and 9 is engaged on the journal 6 which is common to them and on which they are stopped, axially, by a pin 12.
The other end of the body of each segment 4 is crossed by a pin 13 on which the connecting rod ends 14 and 15 are articulated where they are. are stopped, axially, by the heads obtained by riveting the ends of the axis 13 (fig. 3). The head of the connecting rods 14 and 15 com carries bearings 16 and 17 in which the corresponding crankpins 18 and 19 of a crank shaft 20 which journals in; a rubber cushion 21 contained in the sleeve 7.
On the free end of the crank shaft 20 is pinned a lever 22 (fig. 2) which is connected to the control gear (not shown). A spring 23 which is coupled by its ends to the body of the segments 4 tends, by its tensile effect, to bring them constantly close to one another;
the connecting rods 14 and 15, integral with the segments 4 by their articulation on the axis 13, undergo the same effect and their cushions 16 and 17 constantly bear on their handle 18 or 19 (fig. 1 and 2).
<I> Operation </I> In the initial position (solid line drawing in fig. 1), no traction being exerted by the linkage on the lever 22, the crankshaft 20, which can journal without friction in the sleeve 7 thanks to the plastic deformations of the rubber pad 21 which is housed between them, allows its crankpins 18 and 19 to come to be located on a common radial AB, under the action of the spring 23 which is communicated to them by the pads 16 and 17 of the connecting rods 14 and 15 which are integral,
by their articulation on the axis 13, of the movements of the segments 4 on which the spring 23 exerts its action directly, and all the parts are placed in the position indicated by the solid line drawing of FIG. 1.
A traction exerted by the linkage (not shown) on the lever 22 causes a partial rotation of the crank shaft 20 and its crankpins 18 and 19, which carry respectively in their corresponding bearing 16 or 17, print to the connecting rods 14 and 15 a rectilinear stroke which is transmitted to the segments 4 by their common articulation on the axis 13, which causes the segments 4 to describe an angular displacement having the journal 6 as the pivoting center because,
the articulation of binoculars 8 and 9 on axis 10 being stiffened by the action of the washer Bel leville 11 not having been able to play, segment 4 and its pair of binoculars 8 and 9 behaved as if they were were one and the same room;
the angular displacement of segments 4 therefore has the effect of bringing their lining 5 into contact with the bore of the drum 1, starting with their end adjacent to the control mechanism. Lao- Lion of the wheelhouse pursuing each other forcefully forces the articulation of the axis 10 to play, which allows the segments 4 to change their angular position relative to the binoculars 8 and 9, until the time when the linings 5 are fully applied in the bore of drum 1 (dotted line drawing in fig. 1).
The articulation of the binoculars 8 and 9 on the turret 6 is located at a greater distance from the center B than their articulation with the segments 4 on the axis 10; therefore, the segments 4 do not undergo any self-tightening or detachment effect and the force of application of the linings 5 in the drum 1 is directly proportional to the force applied to the lever 22 by the linkage, which allows to dose, at its fair value, the braking force to be applied.
As soon as the linkage is released and its traction on the lever 22 ceases, the spring 23 returns the segments 4 towards one another and the connecting rods 14 and 15, integral with the same movement by their common articulation on the axis 13 , act, by their bearings 16 and 17, on the corresponding crankpins 18 and 19,
which causes the rotation of the crank shaft 20 towards the return to its initial position. The angular position taken by the segments 4 with respect to the twins 8 and 9 (dotted drawing in fig. 1) remains acquired due to the stiffness of their common articulation on the axis 10 and the subsequent movements, of approach or recoil,
segments 4 in the drum 1 will take place in the form of angular displacements having the journal 6 as the pivoting center, as if each segment and its pair of binoculars were one and the same part: the angular position of the segments 4 by compared to binoculars 8 and 9 being called to change, thereafter, only as the wear of the friction linings 5.
The adjustment, which consists in taking up the excess dental play between the segments 4 and the drum 1 resulting from the wear of the linings 5, is obtained by shortening the linkage (not shown) which must include a device for adjusting its length.
The distance of the crank pins 18 and 19 from the axis of the crank shaft 20 must be calculated in such a way that for a given rotation of the crank shaft 20, the angular displacement communicated to the segments 4 is of the same value for each of the segments on either side of the axis of symmetry AC, and that a rotation of 50 degrees of the crank shaft 20 results in a sufficient stroke of the segments 4 to allow the use of the linings 5 up to 'wear to their entire available thickness.
The journal 6 on its own receives the application of the resultants of the forces generated in the segments 4 by the friction of their lining 5 in the rotating drum 1 and leaves practically none supported by the crank shaft 20 of which the function is limited to controlling the angular displacements of the segments 4, which allows the use of the rubber bush 21, the plastic deformations of which allow it to pivot, without friction and without wear,
in the sleeve 7. The flexibility of the rubber pad 21 offers the additional advantage of allowing the crank shaft 20 to move slightly in the plane perpendicular to the axis of symmetry AC, in order to allow better application. linings 5 in drum 1.
Alternatively, each part <B> of </B> connecting rods 14 and 15, as well as binoculars 8 and 9, could be replaced by a single part having an H-shaped section, or else the body of the segments 4 could comprise , at each of its ends, a yoke, making it possible to use only one connecting rod and one twin per segment. Instead of hinging the binoculars 8 and 9 of each segment 4 on a single common pin 6, the flange 2 could have two pins, each segment having its own.
These improvements allow the production of a drum brake, simple and inexpensive to manufacture and in which the segments, by centering themselves, in the drum, at the time of braking, ensure perfect application, under a evenly distributed friction pressure over the entire lining surface in the drum bore, ensuring effective braking with minimum wear.
