<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

AND SIMILAR ". Being the subject of two patent denials filed the first in MOROCCO on June 23, 1938 and the second in FRANCE, the
EMI1.2
Ier describe I9 8 to the uoYm, s itiôn Csô encerne uu cylirdre on the present invention relates to a sur- facer cylinder for pavements, of the type of those comprising, xiotam.- ly a roller of great length and of small diameter rotating freely around of a shaft resting on solid bearings of the roller and supporting a chassie on which are mounted the means for controlling the rotational movement of the roller.
It is immediately understood that, when so controlled, the roller develops a force of inertia whose
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
meaning is such that it opposes a reaction to the control means mounted on the frame, tending to make the latter turn around the roller.
One of the aims of the present invention is to provide the cylinders with this type of balancing means reducing to a very large extent this reaction force, thus balancing the frame and the control means which it carries.
Another feature of the invention is to provide cylinders of this type with a leveling rule arranged in front of the roller and to which a reciprocating movement is automatically controlled so that it ensures the leveling of the spreaded carpet, the compaction of which is then ensured by the roller.
These various objects and other advantages are obtained with the aid of particular arrangements which form the subject of the present invention and which will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings which represent, schematically and simply by way of reference. For example, various embodiments of the invention.
On these drawings:
FIG. 1 is an elevation, seen from the front, of the left part of a cylinder provided with a balancing counterweight with variable position and manual engagement according to the invention,
Figure la is a similar view of the remaining part on the right; two figures 1 and the connecting to points a-a; drank.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
FIG. 2 is the side view of this cylinder.
FIG. 3 represents, on a larger scale and in plan, part in section, a control mode for the leveling rule.
Figure 4 is the profilde view. The end opposite to that shown in the prof il 'of the figure
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section showing the details of the manual engagement of the balancing counterweight.
Figures 6 to 9 show, in elevation, this - engagement in the various positions that it can occupy.
Figures 10 and 11 show, very schematically, respectively in elevation and in profile, an automatic control mode of the position of the balancing counterweight.
As shown in FIGS. 1, 1a and 2, the surfacer roll comprises a finishing roll 1 of great length and small diameter. This roller can freely rotate around a shaft 2 which is integral with a frame 2 which carries the various control and maneuvering members of 7. ', device: On this frame, is mounted, in the first place, the motor 4 on the shaft of which a pulley is wedged. controlling, by means of a suitable reversing system 6, 7, a speed reducer 10 of any suitable type. This reducer can itself control, at reduced speed, via its pinion 11, chain 14 and pinion 15-, the desired rotational movement of roller 1 around its shaft 2.
In accordance with the invention, the cylinders are fitted
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
surfacers of the type described above, of a leveling rule having the task of leveling the carpet previously spread on the pavement.
This leveling rule 43 is carried at each of its ends by a support 70 which can freely oscillate around the corresponding end of the roller shaft. This rule 43 therefore rests, by its simple weight, on running strips such as 71 (fig. 4). This rule 43 can move back and forth, relative to the supports 70: for this purpose, each of these supports is provided with a bolt 72 engaged in a slot 73 of the rule. The support 70 of one of the ends of the rule carries the mechanism for controlling the reciprocating movement of the latter.
According to the embodiment shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4, this mechanism comprises a chain pinion 74 mounted at the end of the roller and actuating a pinion 75 on the axis 76 of which is wedged a bevel pinion 77 in engagement with another pinion 78 whose axis 79 carries a pinion 80 controlling another pinion 80a integral with a plate 80b provided with a crank pin 81, on which is mounted a connecting rod 82, the other end of which engages a bolt 83 fixed on the rule, which thus receives the desired back-and-forth movement. To prevent the rule from buckling, the latter can rest against the roller by means of one or more rollers or eyes as shown at 84. To bring the rule 43 into the erased position - It suffices to rotate the supports 70 around the axis of the roller.
All
EMI4.1
of the actuator mechanism swivels with the support 70.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
@ As shown more particularly in the figure 1a, one could advantageously provide a clutch system on the outer part of the shaft 76. This clutch generally designated by 100 and which can be of any type. known suitable, allows the back and forth movement of the leveling rule ± to be stopped during the movement of the roller.
It is moreover quite obvious that this control mode which has just been described for the back and forth movement of the rule is given only by way of example and that we A large number of equivalent devices can be imagined making it possible to have this movement controlled by the roller 1 itself, or even directly by the motor 4.
To proceed, with the cylinder which has just been described, to the finishing of a pavement covering in successive spans, there are placed on the pavement, for the first span, two transverse strips 17 or running tracks', separated from each other by a distance slightly greater than the length of the roll. The ends of the leveling rule rest on these strips between which the roller circulates. Under these conditions, when the cylinder is started, the rule begins by leveling the previously spread mat at the height of the rolling strips; the roller then causes the desired settlement of this carpet. It will be noted that the sawing movement which is given to the rule '43 facilitates to a very large extent the leveling of the belt.
After the execution of the first span, the edge @
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
marginal adjacent to this first bay serves as a running strip; there is then only to have a single strip for all the successive bays. Or again, two rulers 71 of different height can be placed, the one placed on the marginal edge of the finished span having, for example, 5 mm thick, while the one placed at the other end has 10 mm thick.
We have seen previously that the rotational movement of the roller 1 was controlled by a motor 4 mounted on the frame 3. If no balancing device was provided the roller 1 would develop a reaction tending to rotate the frame and the components that it carries with the shaft 2 in the opposite direction to the movement of the roller. The user would then have to balance this reaction by hand himself in order to keep the chassis in a correct position.
The present invention relates to a balancing device which overcomes this drawback. According to this device, the details of which are shown in Figures 5 to 9, the shaft 2 of the roller 1 carries a counterweight 16 in the form of a sector. On the other hand, this shaft 2 is not constantly secured to the frame. On the contrary, it can freely rotate relative to this frame but it can however be made integral with the aid of a special arrangement which comprises in particular an engaging part 60 which can pivot around the journal 61 carried by the built. The pivoting of this part can be controlled by means of a system of levers 62-63, the fixed axis 64 of this system also being carried by the frame.
The engagement part 60 takes the form of a fork and has two nozzles 6-66 cooperating with two notches 67-68 carried by a part 69 wedged on the shaft 2 of the roller.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
In the position shown in la'figure 6, the latching piece is in the position for which the device must advance alive in the direction of arrow F. For this position, it is its beak 66 which is engaged with the notch 68, so that when the frame is substantially horizontal (position shown in this figure), the interlocking part 60 has locked the part and, consequently, the counterweight 16 in the position shown. For this position, this counterweight offers the maximum equilibrium moment to the reaction developed by the engine for the direction of travel considered.
When, or wants: to advance the device in the opposite direction, it is necessary to bring the counterweight to the position symmetrical to that shown in figure 6, that is to say in the position shown in figure 9. To do this, we proceed as follows. The operator moves lever 63 from right to left. It then brings the engaging part into the position shown in FIG. 7 for which its beak 66 is released from the notch 68 while its other beak has come into contact with the periphery of the part 69.
At this moment, if the whole frame is pivoted around the shaft 2 of the roller, this notch 65 slides on the periphery of the part 69 and, at a certain moment, engages with the roller. corresponding notch 67 (position of FIG. 8). At this monjut., -It ,. It suffices to return the frame to the hot-horizontal position or more precisely to let it return by itself to this position by the only reaction generated, to then find all the components in the position of figure 9 which corresponds to the direction progress indicated by arrow F1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
One thus maintains, with the aid of a very simple arrangement, a rational balancing of the reaction developed by the control means. Of course, the operating lever 63 can move opposite any member allowing it to be immobilized in one or the other of the two positions: .. which it can occupy.
In Figures 10 and 11 there is shown a variant of the balancing device. According to this variant which allows absolute automatic balancing without the operator having to perform any operation, the counterweight 16 remains integral with the shaft 2 on which the motor 4 is freely mounted, while the reduction gear 10 is made integral with this tree 2.
In this way when the motor 4 activates the channel 1 the speed reducer 10 tends to rotate but in its movement it drives the counterweight 16 until the latter automatically puts itself in the position for which it balances the reaction developed by the controlled movement of the roller 1. FIG. 11 shows the three possible positions of the reducer 10, namely position 10a which is the rest position, position 10b which is the position taken by this reducer during slack. - Event of the roller in one direction and the position 10c which it takes during the movement in the opposite direction. A cylinder is thus obtained in which the equilibration of the reaction is automatically and completely obtained, in both directions of operation without the intervention of the operator.
It goes without saying, moreover, that the invention has been described only for explanatory and non-limiting purposes and that modifications of detail can be made to it without altering its spirit.
