PERFECTIONNEMENT AUX MECANISMES TRANSFORMATEURS DE
VITESSES.

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

DEVELOPMENT IN TRANSFORMING MECHANISMS OF
SPEEDS.
The present invention relates to a gear converter mechanism, the application of which to motor vehicles. locomotors; etc. has great advantages.
This mechanism consists essentially in the combination of a multiplier device of known type with a transmission gear, which can be blocked in order to obtain for the receiving shaft an additional speed in the same direction of rotation, or not, as the motor shaft.In the known multiplier device, a cage is used, the toothed wheels of which transmit, in the desired ratio, the speed of the motor shaft to the receiver shaft, the said cage being capable of being driven or not in the rotational movement of the assembly. It is this cage, which, according to the invention, can be controlled by a crew placed centrally on the receiving shaft and also secured to a brake drum.
One can imagine different embodiments of this transformer mechanism depending on the applications envisaged.
The drawing appended to this specification shows by way of example two special embodiments.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Fig.I is a longitudinal axial section through a transformer mechanism, the two brake drums of which are placed in the mechanism housing itself.
Fig.2 is a similar section through a transformer mechanism, in which the two brake drums are mounted externally to the housing of the mechanism.
I designates the motor shaft and 2 the receiver shaft, both carried in appropriate bearings of an oil bath 3.Inside this housing, the ends of shafts I and 2 are carried by a common bearing 4.
On the motor shaft I is wedged a pinion 5 meshing with a sun gear 6 wedged by the shaft 7 of a cage 10 of known construction; this shaft also carries a toothed wheel 8 meshing with a wheel 9 wedged on the shaft receiver I. The cage 8 could obviously include several planets and wheels such as 6 and 8. This cage is integral with a brake drum II.
It can be seen clearly that if by means of an appropriate device the brake drum II and consequently the cage IO are immobilized, the connection between the shafts I and 2 is effected by a simple harness. But if the drum It is released, cage IO will rotate freely around shafts I and 2, and the latter will not receive any movement.
According to the invention, around the motor shaft I is mounted a bushing 13 integral on the one hand with a brake drum 14 and a toothed wheel 15; the latter engages with a toothed wheel 16 wedged on the shaft 7 of the cage 8. In the present case, the hub of the wheel 16 extends to receive the planetary wheel 6.
Under these conditions, if the drum 14 is braked, instead of the drum II, a differential device is produced between the wheels 15 and 9 via the wheels 16 and 8, and an additional speed is obtained. for the receiving shaft 2, which will turn in the same direction as the motor shaft I, or in the opposite direction, depending on the number of teeth of the wheel 15
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is larger or smaller than that of wheel 9.
In the apparatus of FIG. I, the brake drums II and 14 are arranged inside the casing 3 containing the transmission mechanism. In some cases, it is useful to arrange them outside this casing, as shown in Fig.2 where the same organs are indicated by the same reference signs.
It can thus be seen that the casing 3 serves here as a cage and is surrounded by a belt II forming a brake drum.
It should be noted that by multiplying the number of wheels engaged, it is possible to achieve several speeds, which presents an important advantage in the case of locomotives, etc.
