<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"DEVICE FOR DAMPING THE VIBRATIONS TRANSMITTED TO THE DRIVER BY THE WHEELS OF CYCLES, TRICYCLES, MOTORCYCLETS AND OTHER SIMILAR VEHICLES-
The present invention relates to cycles, tricycles, motorcycles and other similar vehicles, and its object is to prevent the jolts caused by the passage of the wheels over uneven ground from being transmitted completely to the person who drives the vehicle.
The invention also relates to means for easily adjusting the vibration damping device, so that it is possible, by a simple and safe operation, to vary the elasticity of the device itself or else to make it completely rigid.
Some embodiments of the object of the invention, in its application to the fork of a bicycle, will be described below with reference to the appended drawing, in which:
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 1 shows a section of the fork along the plane of symmetry of the bicycle; Fig. 2 is a plan view in partial section taken along line II-II of FIG. 1; Fig. 3 is an axial view in partial section of a bicycle fork to which the device of the present is applied. invention, according to an embodiment somewhat modified from that of FIG. 1.
With reference to Fige. 1 and 2, it can be seen that the fork is formed by a tube 1, which ends below in a suitably profiled plate 2. The tube 1 rotates inside the steering tube of the frame (not shown in the drawing) of the bicycle. As shown in Fig. 2, the plate 2 is articulated to the fork head 3 by means of the pivot 4 (or according to any other equivalent device). The escape of the pivot 4 is prevented by the nut 6 screwed onto the head of said pivot. In the fork head 3, are fitted the sleeves 7. The small pivots 8 serve to delimit the maximum distance between the plate 2 and the head 5 of the fork.
Inside the tube 1 is disposed a robust spring 9, housed at its lower end in the housing 10 formed in the fork crown. The other end of said spring can rest on a disc 11, screwed into a thread 12 inside the tube 1. The disc 11 is secured to a rod 13 threaded in its upper end part and provided with a wing nut 14. The handlebars 15 shown in FIG. by dotted lines is integral with the connector 16 which penetrates inside the tube 1, by its vertical tubular part 17.
The tube 1 is provided at its upper end with a slot 18 and it is embraced by the clamp 19 of the handlebar, provided with two eyelets 20 connected by means of a bolt The nut 22 and the lock nut 23, so
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
that the possible washer 24 interposed, constitute a stop for the connection 16 of the handlebar and prevent the unintentional unscrewing of the rod 13. The nut 14 cannot rotate relative to the rod 13 by the effect of the lock nut 25 and by the effect of contact, the upper end of the rod 13 against the transverse part of the nut .14.
In Fig. 2, we see two lateral springs 26 compressed between the plate 2 and the head 3 of the. fork; these springs help the central spring 9 and balance the load, preventing easy wear of the pivot 4.
The bolts 8 can be provided with leather washers 27 and 28, intended to absorb the shock resulting from the opening movement of the space between the plate 2. and the head 3.
When the disc 11 is not screwed in excess, the spring 9 has all its elasticity and the vibrations of the wheel are transmitted only weakly to the handlebars and consequently to the arms of the driver.
If the road is very regular or if it is necessary that the fork be rigid horn in the case of the final phase of a race, the cyclist has only to turn the nut 14; the disc 11 lowers and compresses the spring 9, the rigidity of which increases considerably to make the fork like a rigid fork.
As already mentioned above, the nuts 22 and 23 constitute a stop for the lowering of the handlebars. If you want to lower the handlebars, you unscrew the nut 25 and then the wing nut 14 and remove them both from the rod 13. Then, the bolt 21 is loosened and the connector 16 is withdrawn vertically out. of the tube 1. The nuts 22 and 23 are lowered by the desired amount and then the handlebar connector 16 is replaced until it meets the said nuts. Then tighten the bolt 21 and screw the nut
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
14 and its lock nut 25.
Fig. 3 shows a fork to which the present invention has been applied in a modified embodiment.
Dull bodies are indicated by the same reference numbers, but with emphasis.
The difference with respect to the previous embodiment lies in the fact that the disc 11 'is no longer screwed into an internal thread of the tube 1', but on the contrary on the rod 13 '.
To prevent, by the rotation of the rod 13 ', the disc 11' also does not rotate, the latter is provided with teeth 29 which penetrate into appropriate notches formed in the spring 9 '.
This spring can in turn be prevented from rotating, by means of a stop formed on its seat 10 '.
This second embodiment of the invention not only makes it possible to reduce the force required to rotate the wing nut when the rigidity of the spring is to be varied, but it also makes it possible to keep the height of the nut constant by compared to the handlebars.
The invention has just been described, in its application to the fork of the front wheel of a bicycle, but it is obvious that the device of the present invention can be applied to any vehicle of the type, tricycles, motorcycles, etc. and also on the rear wheel of these same vehicles.
It should be noted that the possible rupture of the spring does not put the bicycle or other vehicle of its kind out of use. It suffices to tighten the bolts 8 to intimately apply the plate 2 against the head 3; the fork is then in the case of an ordinary fork.
Other modifications and variations could be made to the embodiments described and illustrated without going out for
