<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

B R E V E T D 'I N V E N T I O N Machine to draw or reproduce by light
This invention relates to a machine for printing or reproducing drawings or other subjects by exposure to a light source consisting of at least one lamp, fixed or movable, of the gas-discharge type, using a cylindrical plate or curved, fixed or rotating, formed by glass or another transparent material, arranged either vertically or horizontally.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
One of the peculiarities of discharge lamps in a gaseous atmosphere such as mercury lamps is that they require several minutes of passage of the current before reaching their full luminous brightness and that, when the current is cut, it is necessary allow the lamp to cool for a period of time before you can turn it on again. It is therefore undesirable to switch off the lamp after each exposure since this could only be done by wasting a certain amount of time each time before the lamp gave the required light.
Now, as lamps of this kind must be arranged with respect to the printing or reproduction surface in such a way as to project the maximum amount of light on it, it is obvious that a screen must be placed on the path of the light towards paper or other layer of sensitized substance while loading the chassis, otherwise the sensitivity of that substance may be affected.
According to the invention, the machine is designed so that the light can be intercepted by a concealing member during the loading of the plate or the frame, this member being able to be studied to also act as a reflector during the exposure and being able to be associated with a timer for determining the exposure time.
For this purpose, the machine is characterized by the provision of a movable shutter relative to the plate and able to intercept the light rays between their source and the plate in one position and to reflect these rays towards the plate in another position.
When this shutter is used with a double plate formed by two half-cylindrical troughs, it protects that of the two plates which is being loaded while acting as a reflector for the other plate which is being exposed. The shutter can be moved
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
manually or mechanically. Its speed of movement can be varied in order to adjust the exposure time. Alternatively, the shutter can be fixed, and the stage can be movable.
According to an alternative construction, the shutter can be arranged so as to entirely intercept the rays towards the plate, an orifice such as a slot of invariable or variable dimensions being made in this shutter to allow exposure.
The accompanying drawing represents an embodiment of the pulling or reproducing machine equipped according to the invention and various variants of the shutter and of the plate.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the assembly of this machine showing the shutter in the position of reflection of the light coming from the discharge lamps in a gaseous atmosphere and going on the curved glass plate around which is applied or passed the subject to shoot.
FIG. 2 is a schematic view showing the shutter placed so as to reflect the light coming from the lamp towards the curved glass plate arranged in the horizontal direction, the double dashed line representing the position that the shutter can occupy to intercept the light.
FIG. 3 is a schematic view showing the lamp arranged co-axially with two curved glass plates, the shutter here acting as a reflector on the left side and a screen on the right side.
FIG. 4 is a schematic view showing the shutter provided with an orifice which may have invariable or variable dimensions.
A designates the plate formed by a glass trough or bowl with a curved profile, B lamps of the discharge type
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
electric in a gaseous atmosphere, and D the rotating shutter forming either a screen or a reflector.
The perspective view which constitutes FIG. 1 assumes the case of a horizontal type pulling or reproducing machine. This machine comprises a frame F on which the plate A is mounted, provided with a lifting flap made of strong fabric A1 and a ratchet clamping device for securing the transparent subject and the sensitized paper against the glass of the plate. The light source consists here of several lamps B which are suspended vertically in an adjustable manner perpendicular to the axis of the curved glass plate A.
The rotary shutter D is controlled by means of the handle a2 which is mounted at one end of the machine, as shown. The shutter D is shown in the position for which it acts as a reflector during the draw. When the shutter is brought to the reverse position, it acts as an interceptor or concealer screen, thus allowing the machine to be loaded without having to switch off the lamps. This saves the time taken for the lamps to give their full light again when the current is started.
When the shutter occupies this hidden position, it is possible, if desired, to leave the subject to be pulled into the machine without danger until the operator is ready to reload.
According to what is shown schematically in FIG. 2, the plate A constituted by a glass trough with a circular profile is arranged in the horizontal direction, and the lamp B is eccentric with respect to the axis around which this profile is drawn. In this view, the movable shutter D is placed so as to reflect the light emitted by the lamp B towards the glass stage A behind which the subject to be drawn or reproduced is applied or moved by any suitable means.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
When we bring the shutter D to the position represented by the double dotted line, this shutter acts as a screen and intercepts the light of the lamp B while we load the plate A. Instead of the shutter D being movable with respect to there plate A, it can moreover be this one which is mobile while the shutter is fixed.
As shown schematically in Figure 3, the lamp B is placed co-axially with the two glass plates A, A. The shutter D is shown while it acts as a reflector of the light rays emanating from the lamp B and projected towards the left plate which is being drawn and, at the same time, office as a screen intercepting the light rays towards the right plate which is being loaded. A double-acting arrangement is thus produced.
As shown in Figure 4,, the shutter D can be cut from a slit d1 to allow exposure of the subject to be shot to be through this slit. The dimensions of this slot d1 may be invariable, or a member may be provided to allow these dimensions to be varied at will. This member may be constituted by a slider d2, as shown in dotted lines.
The use of a shutter arranged as indicated makes it possible, on the one hand, to intercept the light and to recharge the plate, shielded from the light rays of the lamp which remains on and, on the other hand, when this shutter is brought to the reverse position, to reflect the light during the exposure of the subject to be shot or reproduced. By providing a time indicating device such as a timer in combination with the shutter, it is possible, when the shutter occupies its reflective position, to determine the duration of the exposure.
