<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PATENT OF INVENTION Adjusting device for controlled shoe brakes
The present invention relates to a cable-operated shoe brake handle applicable to cycles in general and its specific object is to be able to adjust said cable of the operating handle itself.
In order to take up the wear of the shoes, it is known to provide cable tensioners. But these tensioners are placed on the large jaw of the caliper where a misadjustment can take place easily as a result of shocks from the roughness of the road. So, to make the adjustment useful for effective braking, it is necessary to get off the machine.
However, in many cases, the malfunction of the brakes was not noticed until the moment of use, which could cause accidents.
The object of the present invention is to obviate these drawbacks and resides essentially in that means are provided on the brake handle to push the cable sheath by the desired amount towards the brake caliper, so as to tighten the pads. of the latter and thus increase

the tension on the wire rope.
A hollow screw, through which the Cable is guided, passes freely through an opening provided for this purpose in the upright of the handle, while the flexible sheath in which this cable plays abuts against the head of said screw, this the latter being kept at a desired distance from the upright by a éorou which can move under command on said screw and which is shoulder against said upright.
In the accompanying drawing, an exemplary embodiment of the present invention has been shown.
Fig. 1 shows an elevational view of a handle according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section
According to the illustrated embodiment, an upright 1 preferably formed from a curved and suitably cut sheet metal carries, at its upper part, an opening to which a slot 3 ends. The upright 1 is provided with two jaws 4 for its attachment to the handlebars 5 using a jumper 6.
A lever 7, mounted to pivot around an axis 8 taking its bearings in the upright 1, is provided with a clip 9 in which the end 10 of the metal cable 11 is housed.
In hole 2 is slid a hollow screw 12, so as to allow the passage of the cable 11, and whose head 121 serves as a stop for the sheath 13.
A knurled nut 14 rotates on the thread of the screw 12 which is supported against the upright 1; the displacement of this éorou 14 on the screw 12 adjusts the spacing of the head 121 of the upright 1, which at the same time has the effect of advancing or retracting the sheath 13 and from which ultimately results either a approximation, or a separation of the brake pads.

The slot 3 is provided for the passage of the cable during assembly, because the very bulky end 10, due to its swelling, could not pass through the hole.
To prevent the sheath 13 from deteriorating on contact with the head 121, a small reinforcing tube 15 can be provided which is slipped over said sheath and in intimate contact with the nut 12.
The adjustment device being carried by the handlebars of the cycle, it will be understood that it is easy, even during the running of the cycle, to make the braking more efficient by screwing the nut 14 one or more turns, which will have the effect of the effect of removing screw 12 from upright 1 and thus bringing the brake pads closer together.
The invention has been described and illustrated purely as an indication and in no way limiting, and it goes without saying that numerous modifications can be made to its details, without departing from its spirit.
