Automatic adjustment device for disc brakes The invention relates to an automatic adjustment device for disc brakes.
Automatic adjustment devices have already been proposed which make it possible to keep the approach distance of the friction linings against the disc constant, regardless of the wear of the linings.
The subject of the invention is an automatic adjustment device in which a screw with a determined pitch, having a thread section which is also determined, is used for taking up the game.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the automatic adjustment device applied to the control of loosening and tightening of two friction elements on a disc. FIG. 1 shows, isolated from the control mechanism, a screw type with a pitch and inclination angle of the determined thread engaged with a nut making it possible to explain the principle of the adjustment device; fig. 2 shows the application of a screw of the type shown in FIG. 1 as an element for automatic adjustment of the friction elements on a disc, this figure being a section through a plane passing through the axis of the control pistons of the friction linings.
If we refer to fig. 1, we see that there is shown in this figure a threaded rod 1 engaged with a nut 2. It will be noted that the thread section of the screw 1 has the shape of a rec tangle trapezoid 3. Such a screw has a certain direction of rotation contact with the nut similar to that of a square thread screw, and will be reversible if the helix angle is sufficient (arrow A), while for the opposite direction of rotation, it presents a contact similar to that of a triangular screw, with a very inclined generatrix and will then be irreversible (arrow B).
If we now refer to fig. 2 which relates to the tightening of a brake disc, by two friction linings 5, 6 arranged on either side of this disc, the displacement of the linings is obtained by the two pistons 7 and 8 mounted in a support 9 of the brake body, and actuated by hydraulic pressure exerted in a chamber 10 between the two pistons. A spring 11 for returning the linings to the non-clamping position, when the hydraulic pressure does not act on the pistons 5, 6 is mounted between the linings, passing through the annular space between the two-part disc 4 .
The piston 7 acts directly on the lining 5, while the piston 8 drives the lining 6, via a flange 12 and bolts 13 also passing through the annular space between the two parts of the disc 4.
The automatic adjustment device, or the lining wear trap, is made up according to the explanations given previously with reference to FIG. 1, by a screw and nut system, as will be explained below.
A threaded sleeve 14 of the type shown in FIG. 1, that is to say with a thread of section in the shape of a rectangular trapezoid similar for a direction of rotation to a screw with square thread, and for the opposite direction to a triangular screw with a very inclined generatrix is carried by a rod 15 shouldered fixed to the piston 8, presenting a 151 driving head of the piston 7. During tightening, there can be an axial clearance 16 between the end of the screw 14 and the bottom of the piston 8. The screw 14 engages with the nut 17 formed by the side wall of the piston body 7.
The operation of the automatic adjustment device is as follows When the pistons 7 and 8 move away from one another during tightening under the action of the pressure imparted to the liquid in the chamber 10, the rod shoulder 15 fixed to the piston 8 drives by its head 151 the screw 14 which, due to its pitch and the inclination of its triangular screw thread is, in this case of the displacement of the screw, reversible and can rotate in the nut 17 of the piston 7. There is therefore in this spacing of the pistons during tightening, the possibility of bringing the pistons together to take up the play of the linings. At the end of the clamping movement of the pistons, the piston 7 leaves free play 16 between the threaded sleeve 14 and the bottom of the piston 8.
On loosening, on the other hand, when the hydraulic pressure ceases to be exerted in the chamber 10, the return spring 11 brings the pistons 7 and 8 together and in this direction of axial displacement, the screw 14 of the piston 7 cannot turn in nut 17 of this piston. The piston 7 and the threaded sleeve 14 form a block and this assembly goes back. The play that exists as a result of the wear of the linings cannot recur.
The sleeve 14 then comes to bear against the bottom of the piston 8 and the axial play 16 is eliminated. The tightening between the friction linings is equal to the axial play 16.
The play caused by the wear of the linings is therefore automatically taken up when tightening by the wise screw of the threaded sleeve 14 in the nut 17.
As the irreversibility of the screw 15 could be compromised by the vibrations acting on the mechanism, the bottom faces of the piston 8 and the screw 14 coming into contact under the action of the return spring 11, </ B> are fitted with a small notch which prevents any rotation of the screw 14. The play 16 is measured between the two ends of the notch. This detent could be replaced by any other positive braking device.
A handbrake control device can be provided with the aid of a threaded sleeve 18 which is screwed into an orifice in the flange 12 and a lever 19 secured to this screw.
