<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

PROCEDURE AND MAORINE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF MESH
IN FILSTRESSES, AND RESULTING PRODUCTS.
The invention relates to a process and a machine for making metal mesh, in particular a type of mesh suitable for use in the manufacture of reinforced products and in particular transparent products such as reinforced glass, that is to say sheets of glass comprising a coated large mesh metallic fabric, in an intermediate position between the opposite faces of these sheets, and arranged substantially parallel and substantially at an equal distance from each of the opposite faces of the sheet of glass, this wired glass being similar to that ordinarily employed for garage doors, factory windows, dormers etc.
Usually, the fabric or wire mesh used in glass sheets of the type indicated is of the hexagonal mesh type.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1
gpnae8. 09 trellis is made up of a series of parallel threads arranged in the longitudinal direction of the sheet, each of these threads being alternately twisted with its neighbors so as to constitute hexagonal meshes *
One objection that can be made to the above arrangement is that when the hot molten glass is applied to the opposing sides of the mesh, the twisted portions of the wires entrain and retain air which when the glass cools. , appears in the form of bubbles in the central part of the glass, around and in the vicinity of the twists of threads.
The object of the invention is to provide the possibility and to make practical the manufacture of wired glass devoid of bubbles, and this object is achieved by providing, and one of the objects of the invention is to produce, a open-mesh fabric or wire mesh in which the threads run obliquely across the mesh, from one side to the other side of the latter, and in which instead of the threads being twisted together, the threads cross each other and pass over and under each other at determined relatively spaced meeting points, and in which, to prevent movement of the wires at the crossings during the application of molten glass, these wires are welded, melted or otherwise fixed, preferably in a permanent and intimate manner, to each other,
at each crossing or at any desired number of crosses
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple mechanism or machine for making the mesh, in which the principles of braiding are used to weave the diagonal threads between them, and with selvedge threads on the opposite longitudinal edges of the mesh.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective means of extending or opening the mesh, the braiding threads thus being kept apart from one another at the place which would normally be the braiding zone of a. ordinary braiding machine, in which the braiding threads are closely joined and give a very tight fabric.
Other features of the invention will emerge from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which!
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the machine) @

Fig.2 is a plan view;
Fgi.3 is a vertical section of one of the selvedge fila feed tubes; Fig.4 is a perspective view, partial, of one of the sides of the mechanism for driving and extending or opening the mesh) Fig.6 is a schematic view illustrating the weaving or braiding of diagonal threads and selvedge threads.
It is obvious that the metal mesh can have any desired width, and that the files which compose it can be separated from each other by any desired distance, according to the use for which the mesh is intended In the present case, as it has been noted above, the mesh is intended for use in what is commonly referred to as "wired glass *", and for this purpose the threads are usually spaced about twenty millimeters apart.
By way of illustration, in this case thirteen diagonal threads have been provided, respectively designated by the letters of.! to m (see fig. 5) and two edge fila, n and o respectively.
The diagonal threads are arranged in the present case so as to be guided and braided with one another and with the selvage threads, by means of the thread guides or supports 1 to 13, while the selvage threads are brought into the ohamp or z8ne of braiding by hollow needles or tubes designated respectively by 14 and 15 (see fig. 2 and 3).
Each of the supports 1 to 13 is of the type commonly used in braiding machines, each of them being provided with a spindle 16 conditioned to support a spool or a bundle of thread. Wire is fed from the spool or bundle to and from a guide 17 located at the upper end 18 of the wire guide post 19 of the holder.
Each support is also provided with tension means and release means, intended to cooperate with means suitable for stopping the machine when the thread (s) of any support is or are less stretched than normal, or is or are exhausted. '
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Of. Mechanisms of this kind are common in braiding machines, and for simplicity they have not been shown here.
The yarn guides or supports are carried and arranged to move on the upper face of a braiding platform 20, the base 21 of each guide, which slides on the upper surface of the platform, being provided with the A usual lug 22 which engages a sinuous guide slot 23 formed in and through the platform 20.
At the lower end of the guide lug 22 and bearing against the underside of the platform 20, there is a guard plate 24 from which hangs a tongue or drive tab 25 conditioned to be engaged by the horns or oro- chest. 26 carried by horn gears 27.
The horn gears 27 are mounted so as to rotate between the underside of the platform 20 and the upper face of a base plate 28, these gears bearing on uprights or vertical spacers 29. arranged at the centers of the curved portions of the sinuous interlacing path 25 and supporting the central plates or pallets 30 which form part of the platform 20.
Additional uprights or spacers 31 are disposed at points external to the sinuous slot 23 to support the major portion of the platform 20 in a determined position relative to the base plate 28.
The base plate 28 is rigidly mounted on cross beams 33 whose opposite ends are welded or otherwise secured to side frames 34 and 35, said beams 33, and a cross bar 36, acting to hold the side frames. laterally spaced from each other.
Mounted on the side frames 34 and 35, and above them, are vertical uprights 37 and 38 and, above the platform 20, a pair of brackets or supports 39 are attached to these uprights and 40 supporting a horizontal and transverse tree or bar 41.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Spaced apart arms 42 and 43 are pivotally mounted on bar 41 and extend substantially in a horizontal direction.
The outer ends of said arms are supported from the cross bar 36 using the vertical rods 44.
Shafts 47 and 48 disposed horizontally and extending transversely in substantially parallel positions are mounted so as to rotate in adjustable bearings 45 and 46 carried by each of the arms 42 and 43.
On the shafts 47 and 48, there are pairs of spaced toothed wheels 49, 49 and 50, 60, and around each pair of wheels 49-60, passes a chain 61 whose internal bar 32 of each link is provided with 'a lateral extension 55 in which is mounted a vertical pin 64.
As can be seen in figure 4, the selvedge threads n and o rest on the upper face of the lateral extensions 53 of the bars 52, apart from the vertical pins 54, and each diagonal thread, where it passes around of the selvedge thread n or o, as the case may be, also bypasses one of the pins 54 on the outside and, in this way, the selvedge threads n and o are kept apart laterally with respect to one another and the diagonal threads are also kept stiff or taut during and after being braided with each other and with the selvedge threads.
The selvage wires are fed to the drive chains 51 by means of tubes or hollow needles 66, illustrated in detail in Figure 3, these feed tubes being mounted on hollow vertical uprights 56 oo-axial with and secured to the upper ends of the uprights or spacers 29 around which the horn gears rotate at the opposite ends of the guide groove or slot 23, said uprights or spacers 29 also being hollow and conditioned to feed each of the n and o selvage yarns upwardly from the underside of the base plate 28 into and through the perforation 57 of the pipe post 56,
from where the wire passes into and through the perforation 57 of the tube 55 which is directed
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
sideways and upwards.
The tip or end 58 of each of the tubes 55 occupies a position close to the external surfaces of the lateral extensions.
53 when the chains 51 pass around the toothed wheels 49 of the shaft 47 as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, whereby the selvedge fila n and o are placed on the extensions of the links 53 to the outside of pins 64.
When the horn gears. 27 are rotated, the thread guides 1 to 13 are caused to follow the sinuous path 23, the thread guide 17 of each support causing the thread it controls to braid with the threads coming from guides 17 of the other supports, and as each support moves along the return curve 23a, at each end of the winding path 23, the yarn is made to pass around one of the tubes 55 for feeding the yarns. edge 14 and 16.
The diagonal threads are thus led suocessi- vely around the pins 54 and also around the edge threads n and o, as illustrated at p in fig. 4, the relation and the relative movements of the different threads during the movements. supports on the upper faoe of the platform 20 being 'ohematically illustrated in figea.
During the braiding movements of the supports 1 to 13, the drive chains 61,61 lead the woven fabric or mesh first upwards from the points where the selvage lines and the transverse threads are brought to and taken up by pins 54,54, then horizontally as shown in fig. 1, said pins holding each transverse thread in a determined position with respect to the other transverse threads and maintaining selvage threads n and o spaced so that the tension applied to the diagonal threads a through m during their braiding does not determine the contraction of the fabric or mesh and its gathering on a line passing through points q, q.
To move the chains 51,51 at a determined speed, and in synchronism with the braiding operations performed by the supports 1 to 13, the shaft 47 is provided with a toothed wheel 60 which
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
meshes with and is driven by a pinion 61 carried by a short, transversely extending shaft 62.
On the shaft 62 is fixed a helical wheel 63. This helical wheel meshes with and is driven by a worm 64 fixed to the upper end of a vertical shaft 65. On the shaft 65, in an intermediate plane between plate 28 and platform 20, there is provided a gear 66 meshed with one of the horn gears 27, noting that the horn gears 27 mesh with each other and that the rotation of the one of them determines the rotation, in a determined relation, of the whole series of gears.
The shaft 65, which drives both the horn gears and the drive chains as indicated above, can be controlled in any manner desired and in this case is provided with a bevel gear 67 in mesh. with a similar pinion 68 mounted on a horizontal drive shaft 69, this drive shaft 69 being provided with suitable fixed and idle pulleys or any suitable clutch mechanism by virtue of which the rotation of the shaft 69 can be stopped by hand when desired, or automatically by the machine stop device, not shown, when the thread of any of the supports becomes too loose or is exhausted.
In the present case, the drive shaft 69 is mounted so as to rotate in suitable bearings, carried by supports 70 which, in turn, are supported by the base plate.
28 or by side frames 34 and 35. The lower end of the vertical shaft 65 is rotatably mounted in the paliera 71 and 72 which in this case are carried by the supports 70. The upper end of shaft 65 is rotatably mounted in a bearing 73, formed at one end of an arm 74 mounted on and projecting laterally from the upper end of post 37, said arm also extending a bearing for shaft 47.
Between the bearings 71 and 73, the shaft 65 is mounted so

to be rotated in a third bearing 75, disposed immediately below and vertically supporting the worm 64. The bearing 76 is carried by an arm extending laterally, 76, comprising a hub or bearing 77 mounted on the vertical upright 37. The bearing arm 76 is provided with a pair of vertically extending and laterally spaced arms 771, at the upper ends of which are arranged bearings 78 for the short shaft 62.
In order to avoid sagging of the upper strands of the chainsea 51,51 between the toothed wheels 49 and 60, and in order to prevent the lateral sag of the chains in the plane of the upper strands of these chains, the said upper strands are conditioned to be supported and move on the tracks or rails formed by the upper edges of the vertical wings 79 of angles 80 oomportant horizontal wings 81 resting on the upper faces of the arms 42-42 and secured to these arms. The upper edges of the vertical wings 79 which form the tracks or rails are located between the internal bars 52 of the links of the chains 51 and the external bars 62a of the links of these chains, as shown in fig.4.
In order to secure to each other the transverse yarns at the crossing points r and to the selvedge yarns at the looping points p, the fabricated mesh is conditioned to be subjected to any desired process or to the action of any suitable mechanism allowing obtain an intimate attachment of the various threads to each other at the points indicated.
For example, either at any location along the upper strands of the chains 61, intermediate between the cogwheels 49 and 60, or after the fabricated mesh has left the upper strands of the chains 61, beyond the cogwheels 60, the completed mesh z can pass between the relatively spaced electrodes of an arc welding apparatus, schematically illustrated at w in fig.l, and which in itself does not form part of the present invention.
It will suffice to indicate that the electrodes, or any other means provided to weld the wires together, can move vertically to come into contact and move away from the fabric or mesh in line with lines such as X-X and y-y of

Fig. 5 for which the crossing points p and r are aligned, any suitable means, such @@ for example a pair of mechanically actuated pinch rollers, 85-86, being provided (to keep the fabric or mesh z stiff or tensioned during the welding operation.
It goes without saying that if the welding operation is carried out along the length of the upper strands of the chains 51,51, between the toothed wheels 49 and 50, these chains provide the means necessary to keep the fabric stiff or taut during the process. welding operation.
Under these conditions, ie when and if the welding operation is carried out between the toothed wheels 49 and 50, so that the pins 54 and the extensions 53 do not melt with the selvages and the transverse threads of the fabric or mesh at points p, while said wires are welded, or otherwise secured to each other, it is preferable to perform welding of the wires at points after the fabric or mesh has left the chains 51,51, for example to the position of the welding apparatus illustrated at w in figure 1, while the welding of the transverse wires at the points rr, along lines XX and YY, will be carried out using a separate welding apparatus illustrated in w1 and which is mounted between the toothed wheels 49 and 50.
The semi-circular arrangement of the sinuous slot or groove 23, around a point belonging to a longitudinal line situated midway between the chains 51-51, and where said line intersects the axis of the shaft 47 of the chain wheels, as visible in fig. 2, maintains all parts of the slot or groove 23 substantially at the same distance from said point, so that the supports or guides 17 must not take up excess slack in the threads when They run through the various parts of the guide groove 23. The supports can thus be made shorter than they would be if the guide groove were arranged in a generally straight line as shown in Fig. 5.
To facilitate braiding of yarns as the fabric or mesh being manufactured moves up and around
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
of the toothed wheels 49,49, a plain table roller or cylinder 49a is mounted on the shaft 47 at a location intermediate between the toothed wheels 49,49. This roller or cylinder can, at will, be attached to said shaft or rotate freely on it, because it only forms a curved surface on which the threads slide during their braiding and when the anchoring points p of the threads are moved around. of the shaft axis by pins 54 of the SI chains.
The application of this mesh to the production of wired glass has mainly been described. It is understood that the protection of this patent will extend to all reinforced products in which the mesh according to the invention is coated in an opaque or transparent material, of organic or inorganic nature, in order to avoid any harmful occlusion of bubbles. of air in the vicinity of the crossing points of the wires.
