<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
@
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Mr. Oswald Francis Leopold KEUN New device with connecting rod and crank with regulating flywheel amplifying the force transmitted by the engine.
The present invention relates to an improved connecting rod and crank mechanism with flywheel. This mechanism is remarkable, in particular, in that the flywheel is arranged so as to amplify during the obliquity spaces of the connecting rod the force that it has accumulated, the inaction of this flywheel being maximum when passing through dead points.
According to one embodiment, the connecting rod is extended beyond its articulation on the crank such that the end of this connecting rod describes an ellipse whose minor axis is located in the extension of the dead centers and the flywheel is linked to said end.
In the usual mechanisms, the regulating flywheel keyed on the shaft to be driven simply acts by addition
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
from a constant torque to the motor torque, variable, to be regulated. In the mechanism according to the invention, the flywheel acts, on the contrary, on the crank via the connecting rod forming a multiplier lever and this action is maximum when the connecting rod and the crank are both located in the direction of the dead centers,
In the accompanying drawing, given only by way of example: FIG. 1 is a diagram of a mechanism according to the invention; FIG. 2 shows, seen from the end, a practical embodiment; FIG. 5 is a corresponding front view; Figures 4-5 and 6 are schematic views of variants.
According to the schematic and theoretical example of execution shown in FIG. 1, the connecting rod 1 articulated at a on the rod 2 guided by a piston 5 moving in a cylinder 4, is articulated at an intermediate point b located for example at the center of its length on a crank 5 keyed on the shaft 6 to be driven, this shaft 6 pivoting in fixed bearings 7 (see figure 3) On the end of the connecting rod 1 is articulated at c, the end d 'a bar 8. The middle 1 of this bar 8 is forced to move on a straight line XX perpendicular to the line yy passing through the dead points m and do the crank 5, that is to say through the axis of the piston rod 2. The other end e of bar 8 is, on the contrary, forced to move to the line YY.
The bar 8 carries at any point, for example in its middle, at d, an axis or journal on which a steering wheel 9 is keyed.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
It can be seen that the point b of articulation of the connecting rod 1 on the crank 5 describing a circle C of center located at f on the axis of the shaft 6, the end of this connecting rod 1 describes an ellipse E of which the small axis e'e "located on the line YY has as length the value 21, 1 being the length of the arm of the crank 5. As for the major axis cc ', it depends on the ratio between the lengths ab and bc.
If point b is located in the middle of length ac, the major axis cc @ of ellipse E has a value equal to 41.
The place described by the point 0 supposedly linked to the connecting rod 1 (place which constitutes the ellipse E above) is perfectly compatible with the movements of the bar 8 (ce) whose midpoint d is forced to move on the large axis cc of this ellipse E between points d and d 'while the other end is required to describe the minor axis e'e "of this ellipse between points e @ and au
Ultimately, we see that the axis of the flywheel 9, this axis being supposed to pass through the middle d of the bar ce, moves, in translation, by the value 21 between the points d and d 'in the plane containing the straight line XX and perpendicular to the right YY.
Naturally, this axis performs at the same time a rotation on itself of 360 during an outward and return stroke from d to d 'and from!' to d.
The flywheel 9 is therefore driven by an epicyclic movement giving rise both to a torque around the axis of the flywheel and to an inertia force directed along the straight line XX alternately in one direction and then in the other, this force being canceled out in d and d 'and being maximum in e. Finally, this torque and these forces can be translated, from the point of view of the effect on the connecting rod 1, by two forces directed, one in the direction of this connecting rod and the other.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
be perpendicular to this connecting rod.
The force directed along the connecting rod 1 acts on the shaft 6 with a very weak lever arm, since it is at most equal to the length 1 of the crank 5 when the crank pin is at b.
The action of the force due to the flywheel and perpendicular to the connecting rod 1 is then zero.
On the contrary, this force perpendicular to the connecting rod 1 acts on the shaft with a large multiplication, when the ma-

in particular this nux dead points tti or n being given the big difference between the lever arms ac and fm or fn.
In Figures 2 and 3, there is shown an embodiment of the schematic device of Figure 1) the bar 8 is replaced by a crankshaft with two rows of crank pins 10 and 11 opposite to the journals 18. These journals 12 of the crankshaft are carried by the ends of connecting rods 13 * and oscillate around a fixed axis 14 placed in the extension of the axis of the shaft 6. The trajectory of the axis dd of the journals 12 is therefore a cylinder of which the circular cross section of center located on the axis 14 can be confused, with a sufficient approximation with the plane of section XX in which should theoretically move the axis of said trunnions 12.
The connecting rods 13 have a length equal to half that of the connecting rod 1 and this to ensure their parallelism and the constant equality of the angles formed at all times by the parts at the joints c, b and d.
The duckling 10 (materializing the point ± of the theoretical example) is connected to the connecting rod 1. As for the crankpins 11 whose axis trace corresponds to the point e of theoretical figure 1, they are guided in two parallel slides. 15, materializing the line YY of the theoretical example of figure 1.
In this construction, the locus described by a point on the axis of the naneton 10 is not strictly
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the ellipse E described by the end of the connecting rod 1, due to the curvilinear path of the axis of the journals 12. So that no inconvenience results, the articulation of the connecting rod 1 can be replaced on the crankpin 10, by a sliding connection, this crankpin 10 being for example housed in a buttonhole, provided in the connecting rod 1 or vice versa.
It is also possible to achieve a normal articulation between the parts 1 and 10 and to provide, on the contrary, a connection with clearance between the connecting rod 1 and the crank 5. This crank will be replaced, for example, by a slide, into which a crankpin carried by the connecting rod 1 or vice versa.
At the various joints, ball bearings, rollers or needles may be provided, as well as possibly any elastic devices, intended to take up the clearances and to allow elastic contacts.
Figure 4 shows a variant in which 'the flywheel is carried by a crankpin 16, located along the same axis as the crankpins 11 so that, in this case, the center of the flywheel moves on the minor axis YY of the ellipse E (figure 1) between points e 'and e ".
The flywheel 9 can also be placed along the axis of the crankpin 10 on an elbow 17 (FIG. 4) coaxial with said crankpin 10.
Of course, a mechanism can be given any orientation, vertical, horizontal or oblique.
