<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Open float trap system.
The present invention relates to a float trap system in which the condensation water discharge valve is controlled by an open float into which the water overflows as soon as it reaches a determined level in the water tank. float, the evacuation of the water contained in the float being effected by the pressure of the steam.
This type of trap has the following drawback: as soon as the downward movement of the float is initiated, the latter rapidly falls to the bottom of the tank under the effect of the influx of water into the interior of the float; on the other hand, after the water has been evacuated from :: the float, the rise of the latter does not immediately block the drain port of the trap, which leads to a loss of steam during the ascent; such steam losses are far from being negligible in the case of an installation having a large number of traps.
The object of the invention is to remedy this drawback by ensuring that the evacuation of the water arriving in the float is obtained before the complete opening of the valve.
To this effect, the invention provides that the relationship between
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
functions determining the downward or upward movements of the float, respectively according to the arrival or departure of water in- or out of the float, considered in relation to the flow of water through the valve under the influence of the steam pressure, is determined in such a way that the flow through this valve before or towards the end of its full opening is greater than the quantity of water which overflows into the interior of the float during the descent of the float corresponding to the above-mentioned opening of the valve
The above relationship can be obtained, by acting according to the invention, on the passage section of the valve or on the dimensions or weight of the float and its accessories.
The appended drawings show by way of nonlimiting example one embodiment of the invention. This extends to the various original features included in the arrangement shown.
The figure is a sectional view through a trap according to the invention,
The purger comprises a tank 2 provided with an inlet 2a for supplying the condensation water. Inside the reservoir is arranged a float 3 open at its upper part. This float is provided at its central part with a finned rod 4 terminated by a needle 5 intended to more or less close an evacuation opening 5a in communication by a conduit 6 with the discharge pipe 6a of the apparatus. The rod 4 slides in a guide tube 7.
The tank cover is provided with a plug 8 having a very small leakage opening intended to allow
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the constant evacuation of the air being able to accumulate in the device at the same time as a very small quantity of vapor.
The operation of the device is as follows:
As the condensation water arrives, the level rises around the float until it reaches the upper edge of the latter. From this moment, if the water continues to arrive, it overflows over the upper edge of the float and falls inside it. The water level gradually rises in the interior of the float until the moment: when the buoyancy force of the float is exactly balanced by the weight of this, float and its accessories as well as the water accumulated in the inside of it.
If from this moment a small amount of water. continues to overflow into the interior of the float, it lowers. Lowering the float has two consequences: firstly to partially open the valve and then to determine the sudden arrival in the interior of the float of a quantity of water corresponding to the lowering of the float. ci with respect to the maximum water level around the float.
As soon as the valve 5 has opened under the effect of the lowering of the needle, the vapor pressure prevailing inside the trap forces the liquid contained inside the float through this valve to finally allow its evacuation through duct 6a.
In order to ensure that the descent of the float is not prolonged, the invention provides for determining the members of the trap in such a way that the flow of water through the pipe 5a and the valve 5 is greater than; The quantity of water
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
which overflows inside the float under the effect of its lowering. For this purpose, the passage section 5a can be increased significantly compared to the section of such passage in known float traps.
It is also possible, without modifying the section of the passage 5a, to act on the weight or the dimensions of the float and its accessories so as to increase the sensitivity of the latter.
In general, all the functions which intervene either in the value of the flow rate through the passage 5a, or in the rate of descent or rise of the float 5, can be influenced so as to obtain the aforesaid relation. between the flow of water through the passage 5a and the quantity of water which overflows inside the float.
In normal operation of the apparatus, the level of the liquid around the float is maintained more or less constant at the height of the upper edge of the float in the position of the latter corresponding to the closing of the valve 5. In addition, the The quantity of water inside the float is such that the total weight of the latter is constantly approximately in equilibrium with the force of the float. It can therefore be seen that the continuous flow is achieved by the fully automatic and continuous adaptation of the weight of the moving equipment (float etc ...) to the valve reactions of the fluid stream thus the control is kept balanced and positive for all the positions of the needle between zero flow and maximum flow.
The invention is not limited to the trap described by way of example but it also extends to any trap

which falls within the spirit or scope of one or more of the following claims.
