the lower flow for turbine with vertical axis. The object of the present invention is a lower bearing for a vertical axis turbine, of which the friction surfaces are at. away from water. This bearing is characterized in that its friction parts are completely separated from the spaces which, through the slot between the wheel and the frame, communicate with the space located upstream of the blades of the wheel, by at least one annular chamber of section in the form of a gutter filled with an auxiliary liquid in which at least one annular partition is immersed.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, four embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 schematically shows a cross section of a vertical axis turbine, for example a Kaplan turbine, and corresponds to the first shape described below; Fig. 2 shows in section, on a large scale, this first embodiment; Figs. 3 and 4 show variations in section relating to the mercury tank, and FIG. 5 a variant concerning the communication channels of the bearing with the space outside the turbine.
The water is supplied by the chamber 1 in the form of a spiral around the distributor 2; from there, it passes into the space 3 7 located above the wheel 3, into this wheel 3, then, through the pirating ace 4, into the downstream channel 5. The shaft t ;, integral with the hub 7 of the wheel 3, transmits the torque to an alternator, for example.
This shaft is guided by the bearing 11, the hollow bearing of which forms an oil sump 12 which is normally filled up to level 13.
The coupling flange 14, forged with the shaft 6, forms an annular container 15. To the bearing body 11 of the turbine is fixed a cylindrical ring 17, the lower part of which is immersed in the container 15 filled with mercury until 'at a certain level and thus forms a manometer 18 with two annular branches, the section of which is U-shaped. Branch 19 of PU opens into chamber 20; this communicates with the oil pan of the bearing 12 through the space between the shaft and the bearing and through the holes 21. The branch 22 opens into the chamber 23.
When the turbine is stopped, the pressure on the mercury in branch 19, due to the oil column 1a, is balanced by a small difference in level of mercury between the two branches (approximately 15 times smaller than h).
During the operation of the turbine, water infiltrates through the slit ensuring the clearance 24 and through the labyrinth baffle 25 into the chamber 23; this water can pass into chamber 38, fill it, and rise as far as pipe 26, through which it is discharged, so that chamber 23 is subjected to a determined pressure. This pressure is just that which is necessary to evacuate through the pipe 26 into the downstream channel, the volume of water entering through the baffle 25. There will therefore be formed in the annular receptacle 15 a difference in level of mercury hi resulting from the difference in pressure. Zion reigning between Chambers 20 and 23.
The device is constructed so that the lower mercury level does not reach but the lower end of the ring 17. It is then impossible for water to infiltrate into the lubricating oil; likewise, there will be no loss of oil.
A tap 27 placed on the pipe 2: 6 serves to reduce to a minimum the quantity of water discharged, when it can be assumed that the pressure becomes greater than that corresponding to the height of this pipe 26.
During a sudden discharge of the turbine, that is to say when the water inlet by the distributor is suddenly stopped, the following phenomena occur. The pressure in space 37 is suddenly brought under the control of that which reigns below the wheel, which is lower than atmospheric pressure.
Thanks to the fact that the pipe 26 opens into the atmosphere, the pressure in the chamber 23 does not drop below atmospheric pressure.
The manometer can therefore be constructed with a view to two limits determined in chamber 23, limits between which the pressure must be able to vary, the lower limit being atmospheric pressure, and the upper one that of the level upstream or that which corresponds to the pipe height 26 or the adjustment of its valve.
The mercury changes can only be done slowly, because they involve a suction or a discharge of oil from the chamber 20 through the minimal space existing between the shaft and the bearing shell.
As a means of checking the sealing of the bearing, two terminals 28 are arranged in the chamber 20. If, for any reason, water enters the chamber 20, it will form an intermediate layer between the sea cure and the water. 'oil. When the water reaches the two terminals 28 which are very close together, the electrical circuit 29 will be closed, making a functional signal. Through stopper 30, it is then possible to extract the quantity of water which has entered.
For greater pressures in chamber 93, for example, in view of strong floods in the downstream level, the drop in mercury can be divided into two or three parts (Fig. 3). The space 31 is then filled with oil by means of the tube 32, which is then closed.
The container 33 can be fixed and the ring 34 movable, as in FIG. 4.
For small drops, the pipe 26 can be replaced by a pipe 35 which connects the chamber 23 to the water situated upstream, so that this chamber is constantly subjected to the pressure which corresponds to the level 36 of the water at the upstream (fig. 5).
For fixed-vane propeller turbines, the chamber 23 will not be subjected to. a pr # -s- sition that towards the end of the opening of the distributor. For smaller openings, there will be suction of air through pipe 26, which has the advantage of reducing the risks of cavitation at low loads (fig. 1).
For high head turbines, it is necessary to replace baffle 25 with a stuffing box with drain pipe to reduce the amount of water lost.
