<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Le dispositif fonctionne come suit:
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Device for recording the positions of a part of a reciprocating maohine, for example the handle of a machine telegraph, and the time periods during which the part of the maohine has stopped in each position".
The invention relates to a device for recording the positions of a part of a reciprocating machine, in particular of the handle of a telegraph for machines on board ships, and the time periods during which the part of the machine. machine is stopped in each position said device being provided with a recording pen writing on a recording tape moved by a clockwork movement.
The object of the invention is a device, by means of which it is possible to follow afterwards the movements which the part of the machine in question has performed, so that, for example in a telegraph for machines, it is always possible to follow exactly. the orders which were given by the telegraph to the chambers of the maohines and to control the times at which this was done.
According to the invention, the machine part transmits its
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
movements with the recording pen, while the connection between the machine part and the clockwork movement is such that each movement of the machine part in one direction strains the spring of the clockwork movement and activates the movement of the clockwork. watchmaking, if it does not work, while the device is provided with a mechanism preventing excessive tension of the spring of the clockwork movement.
According to the invention, the shaft of the machine part can furthermore directly transmit its rotational movement in one direction to one end of the clockwork spring ', and the other end of this spring can be fixed to a tube lying idle on said shaft, said tube being connected to the clockwork mechanism by means of a friction coupling, while the rotation of said shaft in the opposite direction influences neither the spring nor the movement clockwork, but only moves the recording pen.
The construction is further such that the recording takes place automatically, independent of the will of the telegraph operator, however the recording made on the tape cannot be altered.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention is explained more fully with the aid of the drawing.

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 6 shows in life size a part of a recording tape.
The shaft of the machine telegraph, on which the telegraph handle or lever is mounted, is extended forward by a journal 2, which in turn is extended by a part 3 of smaller diameter.
The whole device is enclosed in a housing consisting of a rear plate 6 and an anterior plate 7, connected by spacers 38, 39, 40, while the side plates have been omitted in the drawing in order to make the interior parts visible. . The posterior plate 6 is slid on the journal 2 and is fixed to the telegraph by a bracket 8. Inside, behind the posterior plate 6, on the journal 2 is a protruding part 4, the end of which is provided with a pawl 5. This pawl engages in the teeth of a ratchet wheel 9, which is mounted loose on the shaft part 3, but is fixed to the spring box 10 also mounted loose on the shaft. shaft 3. The pawl 5 can rotate the ratchet wheel 9 in the usual manner in only one direction.
In order to prevent the rotation of the ratchet wheel backwards in the opposite direction, an elastic strip 11 is arranged against the rear plate 6, said strip being in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 9. The spring box 10 is present on its periphery. inside a projection 12, to which is fixed the outer end of the spring 13. In addition, on the outside of the spring box, two stops 14 are mounted at about 120. The right side wall of the spring box 10 does not enclose the shaft 3, so that a tube 15, which can move freely on the shaft 3, can be slid in. This tube has a projection 16 at which the the inner end of the spring is fixed. The tube 15 has an extension 17 of larger diameter.
On this extension 17, in the first place, a stop 18 is mounted so that & lsaillisse in the inter-

valle of 240 between the stops 14 and cannot pass beyond them. In addition, a friction disc 19 is integral with the extension 17. On either side of the friction wheel 19, tlisq, ue raJe der, tµe are mounted inside the disc 20 and the toothed wheel 21 are mounted @ on the extension 17 of the tube. Both are in frictional contact with the friction disc 19.
The disc 20 and the toothed wheel 21 are interconnected by spring bolts 22 which are provided with knobs 23, so that by means of these the force with which the disc 20 and the toothed wheel 21 are pressed against the disc friction 19, can be adjusted.
@
The toothed wheel 21 meshes with a 2% pinion which is mounted on the same shaft as the toothed wheel 25. This one is out. tower meshes with a non-pin 26 on the shaft of which is disposed a worm 27 which actuates a worm wheel 28 which is fixed on the end of the drum 29 for the recording tape 30. Preferably , the ratios of the toothed wheels are chosen such that, for - 2/3 of a turn of the toothed wheel 21, the worm 27 makes 16 turns and the. worm wheel 28 one revolution.
The latter therefore has 32 teeth. The drum 29 is also connected, by means of the toothed wheel 31, to an ordinary clockwork movement 32 provided with a balance.
In this way, when the spring 13 is stretched, the drum 29 rotates, and its rotation is regulated by the clockwork movement 32.
The drum 29 consists of a shaft on which a roller covered with rubber or the like is mounted in a known manner, so that it rotates with the worm wheel 28, but can also be rotated. by hand, independently of the worm wheel, by means of the ring 33, which is necessary, for example, when the paper recording tape is to be passed over the roller.
To mark the movements of the telegraph handle
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
for machines, and consequently of the shaft 2, 3, on the recording tape, which is moved by the clockwork movement, a recording device of construction such that the rotational movements of the shaft are represented is provided by straight lines the length of which is proportional to the angles by which the shaft has turned. For this purpose, a wheel 34 is olavetée on the shaft 3 so that it must rotate with the shaft. This wheel has a curved-shaped groove 35 serving to guide the projection 36 of the tracer arm 37. This arm has a fork-shaped end serving to guide the lug 41 of the carriage 42 which can move back and forth. in the horizontal guideway 43.
To the carriage 42 is fixed a support with ink reservoir 44, provided with a writing nib not shown in the drawing, which reproduces the movements of the arm 37 on the recording tape 30. The ink reservoir with the nib. writing is kept pressed against the recording tape by a small flat spring 45 which can be released. This very tape comes from a feed roll 48; it is conducted through the guide 46 on the drum 29 and is also kept pressed against the drum by small rollers 47 arranged at the lower end of the guide 46. In the guide is formed an opening in the form of a frame, in the - what is the pen to write.
The recording tape, 30, which is represented by FIG. 6, is divided by lines representing the minutes which are arranged so that the clock movement moves the band by one division per minute. Perpendicular to these lines, the band is divided according to the indications of the telegraph for machines, on one side for "forward", on the other side for "back", however, that the middle line runs at the bottom. "stop" position. These divisions correspond to the position of the handle of the machine telegraph, that is to say to that of the shaft 2,3.
When said handle is
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
at "full speed forward", arm 37 at its maximum deviation of one dimension, so that the writing nib is in front of the "full speed" division on the "forward" side of the recording tape When the clockwork is running, all movements of the handle of the machine telegraph are therefore exactly recorded on tape 30, while the length of time that the pointer remains stopped at a given indication can be read immediately. on the diagram.
Fig. 6 is a diagram from which it can be seen, for example, that the handle was left in "full speed backwards" for one minute.
The device works as follows:
When the handle of the machine telegraph, for example from the stop position, is brought into one of the "back" positions, part 4 with pawl 5 drives the ratchet wheel and the attached spring box. to this one. In this way, the spring 13 of the clockwork movement is stretched, because the outer end of this spring is fixed to the projection 12, which is mounted on the case 10, and is thus moved, while the lower end is fixed to the projection 16, which remains in its place, since the latter is coupled to the wheels 32 of the clockwork movement by means of the members 17,21.
By the tension of the spring 13, this clockwork movement is nevertheless set in motion, so that the recording tape 30 begins to move at the determined feed rate of one dividing line per minute along it. the guide window 46. The spring drum 10 cannot rotate backwards, because this is prevented by the elastic strip 11 (fig. 5) in engagement with the ratchet wheel 9. One of the stops 14 on the outer side of the spring box 10, which in the stop position rests against the stopper 18, has moved away from this stopper 18 by rotation, because the rotation
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
can not cause the last oe, since it is coupled to the wheels of the clockwork movement 32 by means of the members 17,21 and is thus retained.
The second stop 14 is brought closer to the member 18 by the rotation over a certain distance.
The recording arm 37 has moved and thereby the writing quill is brought into a position, relative to the "rear" half of the recording tape 30, which corresponds to the position of the telegraph handle. This position is therefore directly marked on the strip 30 from the moment the handle is moved.
If the handle is moved in the reverse direction, the clockwork continues to move, because the spring box 10 remains stopped in the occupied position. However, during the running of the clockwork movement The inner end of the movement spring is moved, while the outer end remains stopped, so that the spring unwinds in the same direction as that in which it was wound up.
During unwinding, the stopper 18 moves towards the first stopper 14, and if nothing more happens, it will again reach this stopper 14, after which the clock movement stops. However, if maneuvering in the meantime, with each movement of the telegraph handle in the "back" direction, the spring box 10 will rotate further forward and the spring 13 will therefore be tensioned more strongly. In this way, the first stop 14 always moves further and further away from the stop 18, while the second stop 14 always comes closer to the stop 18.
When the spring box 10 has rotated 240 (which corresponds to the maximum movement of the telegraph handle from "full speed forward" to "full speed reverse") the second stop 14 stops against the stopper 18. From this moment the spring 13 / cannot be tensioned any more, because if now the spring box 10 is moved again in the direction corresponding to the spring tension, the force is exerted by the second stop 14 directly on stop 18.
The friction between the

offer a r.µ = istL1; this, so that now the friction di sçjue 19 slides and turns between the ozones 20 and 21. The stop 18, which is shown on the extension 19 of the tube 15, therefore turns present , as well as the qube 15, at the same speed as the spring box 10.
Because the inner end of the spring 13 is fixed to the protrusion 12 of the spring box 10, the spring 13 cannot be tensioned more strongly, being

As has already been said above, the most practical construction is that in which the two stops 14 are at 240 from each other, so that the grip 13 is stretched to the maximum when makes a full movement with the handle.
