<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Intake and exhaust device by rotary slide valve for internal combustion engines and the like".
In the application of the known rotary sliders controlling the working times in the explosion engines, one has to take into account mainly the harmful influences of the heat on the spool itself and on its operating mechanism, as well as the faulty lubrication.
We have already attempted to achieve desirable conditions in these three respects, but they have scarcely been able to remedy one or the other defect, and, with a fortiori, they have not been able to give, in the all the points of view mentioned, the results necessary for a walk meeting all the requirements
Indeed, despite the execution of the rotary slide as a hollow body, which is filled with coolant
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
(water or oil), the cooling has remained insufficient, because it is generally only exerted at the beginning, but not in a permanent or effective way, so that the influences of heat, to which the drawer control units,
are not removed completely. The lubrication of all the parts is comprised by devices which are insufficient or do not offer an absolute guarantee from fellow seals, and the devices for adjusting the oil supply are completely lacking or are defective, so that, in in any case, the oil consumption is considerable.
Finally, as the tightness of the drawer is often defective, as a result of all these faults, malfunctions occur, and the power is considerably reduced, even simply because of the tightness. defective, because in this case the gases are forced outside between the spool and the cylinder, so that the compression becomes too low or its use becomes bad.
The application to a rotary slide of the devices which form the subject of the present invention, and which are also very simple, compared to all the others known, makes it possible, on the contrary, to achieve permanent cooling, abundant lubrication and nonetheless economical, and a sure seal; they require little or no service, yet they guarantee safe operation with perfect use of gases.
The overall arrangement is shown in the accompanying drawing in an exemplary embodiment.
Fig, 1 shows it in vertical section, and fig.2 in horizontal section along line A - B.
In the upper part of the cylinder 1 comprising the intake and exhaust ports 2, is mounted the hollow rotary slide 3 which has a recess at a location around its periphery, at 4, and is tightened at the top in the form of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
neck 5, smaller in diameter but nevertheless quite wide. On its face formed by the withdrawal at the neck, the drawer is covered or surrounded by a collar 6 of the cylinder, and the latter is flared upwards into a reservoir or basin 7, which is closed at the top by a cover plate 8; the rotary slide therefore enters this reservoir.
The neck 5 of the spool is surrounded by a toothed ring 9 which rests on a ball bearing 10 and is also covered by a ball bearing 11, so that these two bearings collect the tension and the pressure of the spool. With the toothed ring 9 is engaged a pinion 12 actuated by the crankshaft, for the rotary movement of the spool.
This control and the bearings are therefore completely and permanently located in the coolant and lubricating liquid. Through the cover 8 passes a pipe which is made up on the outside of a tube 16 and inside a tube 14, which descends into the capacity of the drawer to a small distance above the bottom of the latter, that is to say leads to the part most exposed to heat; this pipe is used for the introduction of the cooling medium by a delivery pump (not shown in the drawing).
A drain pipe 15 is connected to the bowl 7 of the cylinder, through which the liquid introduced can flow out. It follows that the coolant can be fed continuously in the drawer to the bottom of the latter, that is to say to the hottest place and, under the pressure, the already heated liquida is forced upwards and discharged through pipe 15.
In order to obtain a complete seal of the rotary slide 3 with respect to the wall 1 of the cylinder head, the slide
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
@ is surrounded on the outside by an envelope formed by a split ring which, originally having a radius a little larger than the internal diameter of cylinder 1, is resiliently pressed, after assembly, in a permanent, energetic and exact manner , on the wall of the cylinder, so that a perfect seal is already achieved as a result.
This clamping ring is provided on its periphery with lubrication grooves 16 to which a small duct 17 passes through the bottom 6 of the reservoir and is provided with a regulating valve 18 which can be operated from the outside, so that the inlet oil finally ensures an absolutely tight closing of the rotary drawer.
Due to the fact that no heat has already been transferred by other parts to the coolant before it enters the drawer, because it is brought directly through its pipe to the bottom of the drawer, to the the hottest place of the latter, and finally, as the heated liquid is always discharged again, since it is forced upwards as a result of the pressure, and flows out through the discharge pipe, it occurs always a new cooling which is, therefore, continuous, complete and extremely efficient.
As the entire operating mechanism, namely the actuators and the ball bearings are completely submerged in the oil, no oil supply is necessary and, in short, no service and the oil consumption serving purposes only to / do lubrication is reduced.
As, with the engine stopped, all the oil can be evacuated by pressure from the rotary spool and the reservoir above it, no cold oil can remain there in winter, tended that with other intake and exhaust systems leaving oil in any part, the engine starting is poor and, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the Case where the tightness of the (spool is not absolutely complete, the oil may even stray onto the piston, so that starting the engine meets serious difficulties.
While a sealing of the rotary slide, which is not absolutely complete, has the consequence of wasting the driving force generated, of rendering the operation of the motor irrational and of lowering its speed, the arrangement according to the present invention makes it possible to achieve an absolute seal thanks to the ring enveloping the drawer and tightened in a tight and energetic manner on the cylinder wall.
The present arrangement nevertheless also makes it possible to obtain an advantageous greasing of the spool, because the ring casing mentioned above is provided with greasing grooves, and the arrival of the oil in the spool achieves an absolutely sealed closure of the spool. drawer avoiding any compression losses and, as this oil inlet is made directly from the oil tank and can be easily adjusted from the outside by means of a regulating valve, the use of a special lubricating device is saved; in addition, an exact control or adjustment of the oil supply according to the needs is made possible, a more abundant oil supply being necessary for example for a high speed operation of the engine, while at a running speed more slowed down, the expensive lubricant must be admitted more economically.
