EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Exemple 4:
EMI5.1
4-sulfonyl-3'-aminobenzol-1 -sulfonyl-3 '-aminobenzol-1 '- sulfonyl)-benzine-m.m'-disulfonate de sodium.
EMI5.2

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

New tanning materials and tanning process
It has been found that compounds having the general formula
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted arylene or diarylene with any linkage between the arylene rings, and R1 and R are any substituted or unsubstituted or two or two-substituted arylsulfonarylamide derivatives. several rings, of series constitution, in which part of the sulfonimide groups connecting the aryl rings can be replaced by other acidylamino groups, constitute excellent tanning materials.
A similar product is, for example, sodium bis (1.2-dichlorobenzol-4-sulfonyl-3'-aminobenzol-l'-sulfonyl) -benzidine-m.m'-disulfonate having
EMI2.1
the formula: SO 3 Na ai ç => - S02oNH-qb-NHoS02¯Q CQs02 .NH S03Na NHoS02¯QCl which can be prepared by treating benzidine- m.m'-disulfonic acid with 2 molecules of 3-nitrobenzolsulfo- chloride, by reduction of the condensation product obtained and condensation of the diamino compound with 2 molecules of 1. 2-dichlorobenzol-4-sulfochloride. The condensations necessary for the preparation of such compounds can be carried out, depending on the nature of the constituents of the reaction, in aqueous solution or in any organic solution.
Reductions can be made with powder

iron or stannous chloride in hydrochloric solution or by another reducing agent. Depending on the nature of the treatment, the end products may have a neutral reaction or a reaction of acetic acid or weak mineral acid.
Example 1:
Lime-free goatskin is treated with 25% bis- (1.2-dichlorobenzol-4-sulfonyl-3'-ami-
EMI3.1
nobenzol-l'-sulfonyl) -benzidine-mmmPdisulfonique, almost completely neutralized but still having an acid reaction (acetic acid), with addition of 3.3% lactic acid in 300% water until complete tanning (all indications - numerical cations relate to the weight of the leather and).
Depending on the thickness of the leather and the tanning takes 3 to 5 days. After tanning, the grain is rinsed well and oiled. Completely wrought leather is supple, full, has long fibers and has a great analogy with vegetable tanned leather but is advantageously distinguished from the latter by its pure white coloring and practically complete resistance to light.
Example 2:
A leatheret salted with brine composed of:
1% industrial formic acid @
8% cooking salt
100% water

low reaction (Congo paper), partially neutralized, without further addition, in 100% bath. The tanning material is dissolved in a little water and is added in 3 parts in half a day. Tanning is obtained after 2 days. The leather finished in a pure white is very similar to that obtained according to Example 1.
Example 3:
Sheepskin from the East Indies is properly ground in the usual manner and rinsed in running water. Then the subsequent tanning takes place in 150% water with 10% of the tanning material mentioned in Example 1 and 1.3% lactic acid. The duration of tanning is three hours. The quantities refer to the weight of the extended material. This subsequent tanning gives the leather remarkable fullness. The coloring of the leather is lighter than in the later more commonly used sumac tanning.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Example 4:
Chromium calfskin from a single bath, suitably free of acid, is crushed for 1 hour in 150% water (all data being relative to the weight of the material drained) with 3% bis- ( 1.2-dichlorobenzol-

1.5% oxalic acid is then added and the mixture is further crushed for 3/4 hour. Then rinsed for 1/2 hour in running water and greased at 50 ° C. with 3% oil from the feet of sulphurous cattle. The chrome leather thus bleached is roughly pure white and has practically complete resistance to light.
Example 5:
A sheepskin, stripped of lime and grease and treated with a brine composed of
0.5% formic acid,
6% cooking salt,
100% water,

which is obtained by condensation of the tetraphenyldi- amino compound with a mixture of 1.2-dichlorobenzol-4-sulfochloride and 1.4-dichlorobenzol-2-sulfochloride and therefore consists of a mixture of compound of symmetrical and asymmetrical constitution having the empirical formula mentioned. 2.5% of this product is used for tanning and is added per 100 parts by weight of tanning material.
22 parts by volume of 30% industrial acetic acid.
After a few hours the final tanning takes place with 10% tanning material to which were added per 100 parts by weight of dry matter 25 parts by volume of 30% acetic acid and 2.5 parts by volume of acetic acid. 100% formic acid.
The concentrated acidic tanning material solution is added in several parts over the course of a day. It is trodden until flawless tanning and after a short rinsing is carried out in the usual manner. The leather produced exhibits the advantageous properties indicated in Example 1.
