<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Process for the manufacture of sodium nitrate".
In the manufacture of sodium nitrate, soda and nitric acid are ordinarily used as basic materials. Soda is produced in a special factory, starting from kitchen salt, and therefore represented, an expensive raw material.
The manufacture of sodium nitrate, starting directly from kitchen salt and nitric acid, is complicated and has so far not had practical significance.
In fact, several methods have been proposed for the distillation of the hydrochloric acid formed, however, in this way a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acid is obtained with the resulting reaction products, the separation of which leads to difficulties. Sodium nitrate can be obtained in solution by starting from sodium sulphate and calcium nitrate, and removing the gypsum.

In addition, it is known that gypsum with carbonate

Ammonium can be converted to ammonium sulfate and calcium carbonate. Using two reactions, ra Z03 and 10E4Cl are produced according to the present invention in a closed cycle process, starting from 1fal, BNGz and damn E3 as raw materials.
In this cyclic process circulate Ca0, 003 \ and CO as auxiliary materials.
The method is implemented as follows:
In a solution obtained outside the process, and con-

containing (W4) :. t S) 4.m4Cl and lTa (l, is mixed, while stirring, a quantity of Na.Cl, corresponding to (lm4) 2 sa4 and we introduce 1% 33a 04 is obtained as the main product which is separated, and treated, with CaM, obtained outside the process, with Hij03, which causes the formation of gypsum and a solution of NaE03, while 0 escapes. The gypsum is separated by decantation or filtration, from the Na 103 lye. which is evaporated to obtain solid Na NO 3. Instead of evaporating the Na NO 3 solution, it can be cooled to remove a part of the Na NO3 and the mother liquors can be used to dissolve a new quantity of Na2 SO4.
EMI2.3
The Kaa 10 ° mother liquors, obtained after the first operation, are cooled to remove part of the NH4Cl.
EMI2.4
In order to activate this elimination of JI14Cl, the NaCl used as raw material can already be mixed here. After separation of the NH4Cl, the lye is saturated with CO2, to obtain

the formation of ('BE4) C03¯ The carbonic acid, necessary for this, is obtained by the treatment described above of
EMI2.6
Ta 4 + Ca CO 3 by 3. ea solution of (ER4) to S03- 3E4C1 - ZAAL thus obtained, the gypsum obtained in the manufacture of Ha% 0 3. Which is thus transformed into (EH4) sa and Ca CO. This transformation takes place completely due to the high solubility of gypsum in NH4Cl solution.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The solution thus obtained is the solution of (NH4) 2
SO4- NH4Cl -Nacl mounted at the start, è, which the Nacl is mixed with introduction of 1% which provides a new quantity of Na2 SO4 and so on.
An excess of Nacl, which remains in solution in the operating cycle, is favorable for a better release of 00 Instead of introducing NH3 after the reaction followed by transformation, of Ca SO4 with (NH4) 2 003 it is possible to the add @ before this reaction.
This has the advantage that the cold solution, after the removal of NH4Cl by cooling, is heated to a temperature favorable to the reaction, without the addition of external heat.
As Na2 SO4 and Ca CO3 have to be treated together with - HNO3, it is not necessary to filter them separately, on the contrary, it is practically very advantageous to filter them together since, as is known, the precipitated Ca CO3 chemically is difficult to filter due to its thinness.
Of course the ammonia can be recovered by regenerating the ammonium chloride and can be reintroduced into the process.
