<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

EMI7.1
EMI7.2

"RETURN BRAKE ESPECIALLY FOR WINCHES."
Descent brakes are known for winches which are arranged as return brakes so that they are engaged only when the load is lowered, while they automatically disengage when ascending.
Return brakes of this kind consist, for example, of a disc rotating idle on the shaft of the cable drum which disc is driven, in one direction of rotation, by ratchets mounted on a ratchet support keyed on the shaft and then brakes this shaft $ but which has not entered, inserted in the other direction and therefore does not prevent the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
shaft rotation. Raising of the load can therefore take place with the brake applied, while lowering is only possible when the brake has been released.
. The present invention relates to a return brake
EMI2.1
extremely simple structure and perfect operational safety. It lies in the fact that the side shoes serving for the regulated braking of the load on the descent constitute, at the same time, the return brake shoes which remain slightly

frictional contact with the brake drum, at the time of the load and serving as a stop member against a return of the load.
According to the purpose, the brake shoes are arranged, with the ability to oscillate in one direction, at the periphery of the drum so that when the drum rotates in the opposite direction for the rise of
EMI2.3
The load, the shoes, are driven ps-18 drum and are gap 35 enough so that the brake pressure follows removed. The invention therefore comprises, instead of a cncliqaet, a, sp, a wedge clamping system known in principle. Consider4 <.:; d c4 point (l \ :; view, the invention resides in that the members of the wedge clamping system, arranged as braking members, are mounted on sii.> p <> rt s adjustable by the movement of which they can be d] <;; 1.:nryôs enough so that they act on the drum not to stop it but only to brake it.
Several exemplary embodiments of the invention are. shown in the accompanying drawings.

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
On the shaft 10 of the trellis is keyed the drum 11 on which the brake shoes 12 and 13 are applied. In accordance with the invention, these are mounted so as to be able to oscillate only in one direction. periphery of the drum.
In the illustrated embodiment, the oscillation takes place due to the fact that each of the shoes is articulated at the end of one of the arms of a lever 14 with two arms which, for its part, is mounted on a vertical balancer 16 or 17, balances 16 and 17 rotate on fixed journals 18 and 19 fixed to the frame of the crane. These balances 16 and 17 move with respect to each other by means of a system of rods, arranged at will, and carry lateral appendages which limit the amplitude of the angular displacement of the levers 14 and 15.
Thus the balance 16 carries a lateral appendage 21 on which the lever 14 rests in the braking position, and an appendage 22 which limits the oscillation of this lever. The stops 23 and 24 of the balance 17 exert the same action on the lever 15. The system of braking rods consists, in the exemplary embodiment shown, of a traction rod .25 attached to the upper end of the balance 17 and to which is attached the shorter arm, directed downwards, by an angled lever 26 which, for its part, is articulated, at 27, at the upper end of the balance 18, and whose longer arm is loaded with a counterweight.
At the end of this arm, slides vertically a push rod 29 provided with a nut 30 acting as a stop, on which the arm of the bent lever 26 can rest. The rod 29 can be lifted with the aid of a stopper. 'an angled lever 32 mounted on a fixed journal 31 and whose lowest position is determined by a stopper 34.
The mechanism works as follows:
If the brake drum 11 tends to rotate in the direction indicated by the arrow marked "descent", the levers 14 and 15 which carry the brake shoes are held, by the force of friction, against the cleats 21 and 23 of sort
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
that they are applied to the brake drum by the action of the counterweight 28 which tends to bring the rockers 16 and 17 closer together under the action of the angled lever 26.
The brake disengaging for lowering the load can take place by lifting the push rod 29 which presses the nut 30 on the lever 26 in the opposite direction to the action of the counterweight 28.
If the direction of rotation of the drum changes even with the watch of the load, the two shoes 12 and 13 are spaced apart, and the two rockers 16 and 17 are moved a little closer to each other under the action of the counterweight 28, until the lever 26 rests on the stop nut 30, so that the brake shoes are unloaded and do not exert a trellis action when the load is raised. If now we suspend the movement of the winch, the load pulls the mechanism and the brake disc 11 in the direction of the arrow marked "descent". So that the brake shoes then return to the position shown in the drawing, it is necessary that these shoes are kept in appropriate friction contact with the tanfoour.
This effect this produced, in the exemplary embodiment represented, for the shoe 12, under the action of its own weight and, for the shoe 13, under the action of a counterweight 35 placed on the lever 15. From this way the shoes tend to return, from the position away from the drum, to the normal position shown in the drawing so that they slide, under slight pressure, against the taro.- bour of the brake, and, at the change of direction of the movement, can immediately exert their clamping action,
as a result of which the arms 16 and 17 are again separated from each other and the elbow lever a is again lifted by the stop nut.
In the event that the self-weight of the brake shoe .12 produces too great a frictional effect, this effect can be reduced by means of a counterweight 35 '.
As can be seen, the brake shoes can, at the same time, act as a return clamping member by serving, in the usual manner, to brake the descent of the load.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In figs 2, 3, and 4, is shown another exemplary embodiment of the invention. brake shoes 112 and 113 are pressed on the front side, on the shaft IIO of the winch to be braked. The two levers 114 and 115 which carry the brake shoes are mounted on a connecting rod 150 which is mounted on the frame 120 and which can be rotated by the connecting rods 151 so that the shoes 112 and 113 can oscillate at the periphery of the drum and can be driven by it.
Furthermore, the levers 114 and 115 can, in their common plane, oscillate around the journals 152, so that they can be pressed against the drum 11 or be moved away from it.
Between the return arms of the levers 114 and A wedge 125 is mounted on the oblique faces of which slide the guide pieces II6 and 117 which are carried by the return arms of the levers 114 and II ¯5. The wedge 125 which penetrates into the grooves of these guide pieces is mounted, with the ability to oscillate, on an elbow lever 126 articulated in 127 on the frame of the machine, 'which is loaded with a counterweight at I28 and which is connected , by its return arm to the control mechanism which is not otherwise shown.
A stopper 123, mounted on the frame 120, prevents the brake shoes from being driven into oscillation with the brake drum during the descent of the load. '
If the brake drum is rotated counterclockwise to raise the load, the shoes are driven by the drum until the guide pieces mounted on the levers 114 and 115 and sliding on the wedge 125, can come close enough to remove the brake pressure. Algrs is first -the arm loaded with a counterweight and carrying the corner 125 of the elbow lever 126 which is lowered until it rests on a stopper 130.
In the meantime, the brake shoes 112, thanks to their own weight under the action of which the guide pieces 116 and 117 are pushed upwards against the wedge 125 and are then separated from each other, remain in contact. permanent with the brake drum.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
If the latter then changes direction of rotation, the brake shoes are engaged and the guide pieces 116 and 117 are pushed upwards, along the wedge 125, until, under the action of the braking friction , the arm of the -, -! or bent 126, loaded with a counterweight which carries the wedge 125. is raised.
Finally, the shoes 112 and 113 come to rest on the 'stopper 123 so that the drum can no longer rotate further and is blocked.
If you want to lower the load, you just have to swing the elbow lever by means of the control mechanism in the opposite direction to the direction of the weight 128.
So that the brake shoes do not offer significant resistance in the direction of the lift, but can still be tightened if necessary, the column device of the invention is, moreover, arranged in such a way that the control mechanism brake shoes, placed under the action of a permanent force, m (canism which is disengaged by the shoes on the load watch and which is automatically put back under the braking voltage, when the brake is overturned. rotation of the drum, come, in the relaxed position, put on a stopper, but may for the need of braking be pulled beyond the target position had during the upward stroke of the load.
By this means, we obtain that this mechanism, logs of the rise of the load, can not exert pressure on the brake shoes, so that they do not offer no- -table resistance in the direction of the climb, although braking can take place during this rise of the load.
When the motor ceases to be supplied with current during the raising of the vacuum hook or under light load and the control mechanism rests on the stopper, the shoes cannot brake on the moving masses; it follows that the movement continues in the upward direction. In view of this circumstance it is necessary, for the assembly of the end of

thus loses a partialotable of the lifting height, if it is a question of lifting a heavy load which, after interruption. of the current through the terminal switch, immediately stops the winch.
EMI7.3
Consequently the device according to the invention is such that the terminal switch, actuated according to the known mode, by the lifting mechanism, acts, at the moment of the interruption of the current, on the return brake, of such a way that the latter exercises his,. The mechanism brakes slowly in the upward direction and stops immediately. It is advantageous to have the terminal switch move, at s <1n 'arc entry, the stopper against which the control mechanism rests.

As the brake shoes, according to the invention, automatically put the mechanism under brake tension, as soon as the direction of rotation of the brake drum reverses, the stopper, even when it is put in. in place, does not in any way prevent the regulated suspension of the braking, on the descent, as would occur if, with an ordinary brake, one limited, by means of a

cleat, the: J11. [. 1li kills the adjustment movement of the brake lever.
The invention achieved by the present device is therefore based on the fact that, for return brakes with brake shoes a = sliding as wedge clamping members, the amplitude of the adjustment field of the brake lever is changed automatically, at the change. .. direction of rotation of the brake drum. Consequently, it is possible, within the limits of the adjustment in the upward direction, to have a stopper without the latter preventing the regular release of the brake on descent.
In order to be able, even when the stopper is in place, to pull the operating mechanism beyond the stop position.

<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
In order to decrease the braking force for the regulated lowering of the load, the counterweight lever 213 has to be partially unloaded and this is achieved by means of a rod 217 provided with a ridge which can be lifted by an angled lever. 218 and a rod 219, using a control lever 220, until the flange is applied from below on the lever 213, the latter then in the high position so that its adjustment field n is in no way limited by stopper 214.
If again there is a reversal of the direction of rotation of the drum 20I, for the lifting of the load, the brake shoes 202 return to the position indicated by the drawing, so that the levers 204 can move closer together. against each other, until the counterbalance lever 213 rests on the stopper 214 and the operating mechanism is unloaded.
If, when the load is lifted, the terminal switch comes into action, the stopper 214 is pushed to the left, so that the lever 13 moves down and pulls the operating mechanism until the connecting rods 203 come into contact with the bumpers 206 and immediately press the shoes 202 on the brake drum 201. The terminal switch 215 can therefore be placed in such a position that the interruption of the electric current takes place only shortly before the highest effective position smit reached.
Even when the hook is not loaded, the lifting device can be brought to rest immediately. In order for the hoist to operate quickly and reliably, it is advantageous to be able to stop the subsequent movement of the mechanism in the upward direction at any time and not only in the most position. high. To this end, the mechanism could be arranged in such a way that the stopper 214 is connected to the switch of the lifting motor so as to be always disengaged when the current to the lifting motor is interrupted, however it is sufficient for needs of the service, that the rapid stopping of the lifting device is operated by the driver.

It should be mentioned that, in electro-magnetically actuated brakes, it is a known device which consists in providing a safety mechanism such that an unwanted descent of the load can be prevented.
The importance of the advantage which results from it emerges from the fact that las magnetic brakes, provided with ca safety device, are very widespread in spite of the defective operation.
