<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig.3 est une variante.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Sealing pliers for sinkers.
The present invention relates to a plumbing pliers, specially intended for crushing hollow leads in order to tighten a string and at the same time to print a mark, number, indication, etc. on them in order to make a closure inviolable, except for break-in.
Pliers of this kind function like pincers the jaws of which bring together two interchangeable dies or punches facing each other and between which the hollow lead is crushed; of these punches, one is generally integral with one of the handles or levers of the pincer, beyond the pivot, the other is mounted correspondingly either directly on the other handle, or on a member articulated to the first handle and in this case use has already been made of a movable cam actuated by the second handle to bring the two punches together against a spring which tends to keep them apart.
The clamp according to the invention belongs to this type, but is
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
specially designed with a view to obtaining a compressive force between the two particularly high dies at the limit of approach of the two punches, at the very moment when the lead is crushed and with a view to allowing the operation using 'one hand. The first punch is, in the known manner, fixed to an articulated handle in a head 'comprising the second punch, the two punches being held at some distance from each other by a spring loaded between said handle and the head.
The main characteristic consists in that the second articulated sleeve in an extension of said head comprises on the same articulation axis a cam whose nose, provided with a running roller, acts behind the first punch in such a manner. that, at the moment of crushing, the pivot of said second sleeve and the contact of the cam are approximately in the extension of the axis common to the two punches and that the nose of the cam, or its roller, almost moves perpendicular to this axis which is the direction in which the crushing force must be exerted. Maximum and very strong compression is produced by this arrangement when the two punches start to crush the lead with reduced muscular effort.
A form of construction of a clamp according to the invention has been shown in the appended drawing given by way of non-limiting example and in which: FIG. 1 is a front view of the clamp in the crushing position.
Fig. 2 is the head part of the same in the open position, some parts being assumed to be removed. and
Fig.3 is a variant.
In these figures 1, the denote respectively the two dies or punches fixed in any suitable manner, removable or not: 1 to the head of the handle 2, 1 'to a part 3 pivoting on the handle 2.
Part 3 comprises, according to the known arrangement, a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
cheek on each side of handle 2 (only one of which is visible on the views given from the front) in an irregular V-shape, the two cheeks being joined at their base by the bolt 4 of articulation to handle 2, by the common end in which the punch 1 'is held, and finally by their other end, extending beyond the head of the handle 2, by a second articulation bolt 5 on which pivots, between the two branches of V, the second handle 6 of the pliers.
The handle 6 comprises a cam 7, the profile of which is better visible in FIG. 2 in which part of the cheek 3 is supposed to be removed. This cam may be in one piece with the handle 6 or be attached to it. The nose of the cam 7 comprises a small roller 8 which rests against a plate 9 arranged on the rear face of the handle 2. The axis of the bolt 5 is located in the extension of the axis common to the two punches 1.1 'and in the clamping position fig.l the point of contact of the roller 8 on the plate 9 coincides approximately with this axis which gives an increasing compressive force when tightening the handles 2,6, because the roller 8 is moves almost tangentially to the plate 9.
A coil spring 10, held on a tenon 11, tends to separate the parts 2, 3 and to keep the clamp open; The opening is however limited, for example by an edge 12 of the head of the handle 6 which abuts against a corresponding edge 12 'of the head of the handle 2 (fig.2).
A stop 13 is also provided between the two sleeves.
The plate 9 and the roller 8 or the cam itself form separate parts of wear resistant material, for example hardened or cemented steel, while the other parts except the punches are made of malleable iron. Punches are made of steel and can be of any suitable type and shape. In fig. 3 there is illustrated a particular form of punches 14, 14 'by which the central part 15 of the lead
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
comprising the hollow is raised relative to the edges 16.
CLAIMS.
1. Sealing pliers of the type in which the two punches between which the hollow lead or other is crushed are mounted one on the head of one of the handles, the other on a branch of a V-shaped piece articulated by its base to said handle, the two punches being brought together against a spring loaded between said handle and said V-piece, by the fact that the other branch of the V-piece extending behind the head of the first handle carries an axis located in the extension of the axis common to the two punch, ns in crushing position and on which is articulated the second handle which comprises on the same pivot a fixed cam whose nose presses on the face posterior of the first sleeve behind the punch by the approach of the second sleeve towards the first, characterized by,
that when the said lead is crushed the nose of the cam is located approximately in the said extension of the axis common to the two punches and acts by moving almost perpendicular to this axis so as to produce the force maximum compression at the moment of crushing with a reduced muscular effort, allowing to seal with one hand.
