<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Riveting device
The present invention relates to a riveting device and in particular a device for riveting a brake lining on a brake shoe or a. like organ, and its object is a simple form of the device which is efficient in operation and simple to produce.
According to the present invention, the riveting device comprises two arms pivoting on one another at their internal ends and carrying a clamping jaw at the external end of each arm, one of the jaws being. intended to rest on the head of the rivet on one side of the part to be riveted and the other being intended to rest on the other side of the parts to be riveted; the device is characterized by the fact that the arm carrying the latter jaw has a striking arm where a punch is pivotally mounted on the arm to strike the rivet and perform the riveting action. The batter comprises a pivoting member mounted and guided in a slot in the jaw or between two flanges of the jaw.
The arms are advantageously U-shaped in cross section and the batter is pivotally mounted between the sidewalls of the arm, the arm being bifurcated at the end to form a clamping jaw which passes either side of the batter. . The arms are spread apart by a

spring up against a stop device which is adjustable. The stop device may include a cam which forms the means for closing the arms in the clamping position.
A rod can pass through the two arms and carries on one end a screw nut intended to bear against an outer side of an arm and a cam can be rotatably mounted on the other end of the rod and bear. on the outer side of the other arm to limit the opening movement of the arms and to keep the cam on its seat by the pressure of the spring tending to open the arms.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a riveting device constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 3 is a plan view with part of the cam lever removed by a break
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing an aid applied to part of a brake shoe and lining.
Fig. 4 is a section through the line x-x of FIG. 1 and
Fig. 5 is a section through the line y-y of FIG. 1.
The riveting device comprises two arms or levers 1 and which are articulated together by the bolt which passes through the arm 1 and through the extension 2a fixed to the arm 2. The arms 1 and?, Are formed from a sheet folded into o'U shape and the part 2a is fixed by the rivets 1 inside the channel of the arm 2. The curved part of the channel of the arm 1 is notched at the top, to form those flanges between which the extension part 2a passes. The part 2a has a number of holes 5, so that the distance between the arms can be varied according to the shape and dimensions of the parts to be riveted.
The end

external, from. arm is filled with a block of metal. and forms a clamping jaw. A threaded hole 7 is provided in the block 6 and an anvil rod 8 is detachably fixed in this hole, this rod being intended to rest on the head of, for example, a rivet 9 for. fix the brake lining 10 to the brake shoe 11. The anvil rod 8 is replaceable, so that different sizes of rods can be adapted depending on the size of the rivet and the rods 8 which are not in use. can be screwed into the tapped holes of the arm there, for storage.
The outer end of the arm 1 forms a clamping jaw

and a striking arm 12 est-, mont4 .., 4-'pivot on the bolt 1?, a in the channel formed by the arm 1 of U-section. The upper part of the clamping jaw is notched at 13, from note that the batter 12 is mounted between two bifurcations or side flanges 14. The batter 12 extends from its pivot link 12a to the end of the gripping arm, so that the batter can operate up to at the final end of the clamping jaw.
The arms are normally spread apart by means of a spring which bears on the internal edges of the two arms 1 and 2 and the limit of the opening is fixed by the bar or rod 16 which passes through holes in the arms. two arms and carries an adjustment nut 17 screwed on the part of the rod projecting on the arm 2-. The upper end of the rod 16 comprises a head 18 which passes through the channel of the arm 1 and through a slit in the top of the arm 1, this slit being reinforced by a folding out of the flanges. side 19 of arm 1. The edges 20 of these side plates form a support for a cam 21 which is pivotally mounted on the head 18 by means of a bolt 22.
The spring 15 therefore pushes the arm 1 back into the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
open position and retains the cam 21 on its seat 20 and also limits the opening movement of the arms 1 and.
In order to tighten together the parts 10 and 11 of the brake shoe before the riveting operation, the cam 21 is rotated by means of its lever 23 to force the flanges 14 to rest on the brake shoe 11 and the rod d 'anvil 8 to rest against the head with the rivet 9. By adjusting the eorou 17, the arm 1 can be placed in a position such that the movement of the lever 23 brings the arm 1 into the clamping position, so so that different material thicknesses can be tightened with the adjusting nut 7.7.
Further adjustment can be achieved by fitting bolt 3 into any of the required holes 5. The arm can be secured in jaws of a vise 24 and washer 25 rests on the top of the jaw. When the riveting pieces are clamped between the jaws of the arms 1 and &, a blow is given to the striker 12 to perform the riveting operation. The riveting device thus constructed is extremely simple to manufacture and a riveting operation can be carried out with great ease.
The riveting parts are clamped together before the riveting operation and therefore the riveting parts should not be pressed against each other initially by the riveting effected by the rod. The batter is guided and is compelled to give shots that are in the axial direction of the lever. Since the lining is tight to the brake shoe, the end of the rivet shank should only be riveted securely to the shoe and the riveting action should not initially clamp the lining and shoe together. Striker 12 may include a head deployment member 12a, detachably adapted to the striker, such that any head can be formed.

particular rivet.
This member can be formed by a pin having a flat or concave deployment face or the face can be -conformed to split and deploy a solid rivet or to form a flange on a tubular rivet.
The device can be used to rivet any other parts together. A feature is still present, that the L-shaped striker allows the riveting device to be used in difficult positions, for example for riveting clutch linings on motor vehicle clutches. .
