On constitue, comme le montrent les fig. 1 à 3, ce moteur essentiellement: par ledit cylindre a supportépar un bâti b -- qui supportera également toutes les autres pièces du mécanisme et établi, comme on le supposera tout d'abord d'une manière appropriée quelconque --, lequel cylindre est supposé être à axe horizontal, porte, extérieurement en son milieu, ou bien latéralement comme aux. fig. 1, 2 et 3, ou bien, de pré- férence, à sa partie supérieure comme à la fig. 4, de pré- férence aussi venue de fonte en même temps que lui, une boî- te à soupapes ± sur laquelle on revendra dans ce qui suit, et est avantageusement muni d'ailettes de refroidissement; par lesdits deux pistons opposés d, introduits dans le cylindre a et agencés comme les pistons ordinaires des moteurs à explosion ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
de préférence avec roulement à billes, pa- rallèle à l'axe de l'arbre e et qu'on supposera, tout d'a,- bord, fixe , à 1 'encontre de ce qui est représenté pour le balancier se trouvant à la droite sur la fig. 1, balancier dont l'extrémité supérieure est articulée à une biellette ± articulée, d'autre part, à la face externe dudit piston, et l'autre extrémité elle-même articulée, par l'intermédiaire d'une biellette h., à un vilebrequin i à deux coudes fixé à l'arbre e, lesquels balanciers sont libres d'osciller res- pectivement dans deux fentes longitudinales a ménagées dans la partie inférieure du cylindre, le tout de façon que les deux balanciers soient toujours symétriques par rapport au plan vertical passant par l'axe dudiarbre e;

De préférence, on combine, avec leditmoteur un moyen propre à permettre de faire varier à volonté, même en marche, les dimensions de la chambre d'explosion, lequel moyen peut être constitué de façons différentes, par exem- ple ou bien (cette disposition n'étant pas représenté) en articulant, aux deux axes f1 d'oscillation des balanciers -- axes rendus libres dans ce cas, c'est-à-dire n'étant plus fixés au bâti --, les deux extrémités 'opposées de deux tiges horizontales dans le prolongement l'une de l'autre et reliées entre elles par un manchon comprenant deux tarauda- ges en sens inverses propres à s'engager respectivement sur .les extrémités en regard, filetées d'une façon correspondan- te, desdites tiges, moyennant quoi il est possible, comme ;
on le comprend, en faisant tourner ledit manchon sur lui- même dans un sens ou dans l'autre, par l'intermédiaire par exemple d'une roue hélicoïdale mise en rotation par une vis sans fin, de rapprocher ou éloigner l'un de l'autre les deux pistons, par conséquent de diminuer ou augmenter le volume de la chambre d'explosion;

bâti) qu'un espace suffisant existe entre l'axe du cylindre ' e. et la paroi bl du carter livrant p as sage aux, ies ,j, pour permettre de remplacer le bloc moteur par un autre bloc moteur avec cylindre d'alésage différent, mais de même cour- se pour les pistons ;
Confie il va de soi, et comme il ressort d'ailleurs déjà de ce qui précède, l'invention ne se limite aucunement à celui de ses modes d'application, non plus qu'à ceux des modes de réalisation de ses diverses parties, ayant plus spécialement été indiqués; elle en embrasse, au contraire, toutes les variantes, notamment: celles où le moteur, décrit serait agencé pour ser- vir de moto-pompe, de moto-compresseur, etc., auquel cas on ferait actionner, par les pistons, par exemple deux pompes,: deux compresseurs, etc.. attelés directement auxdits pistons et dans leur prolongement, la disposition décrite pouvant également s'appliquer à un groupe électrogne;

"Improvements made to machines comprising two opposed pistons moving in opposite directions in the same cylinder, in particular to internal combustion engines of this type".
The invention relates to machines comprising two opposed pistons moving in opposite directions in a driven cylinder; and it concerns more especially (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, among these machines, internal combustion engines of this kind.
It aims, above all, to make these machines more such, that they form a whole / symmetrical, more compact and better balanced than until now.
It consists, mainly, in making understand, with the transmission to be established between the two opposed pistons of the same cylinder of the machines of the type in question and the shaft of the said machines which, according to the destination of these ci, must be motor or driven, two systems
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
with pendulum, one for each piston.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below, in particular of another provision consisting, itself even, to constitute the frame of machines of the type in question by two removable parts, one being the engine block and the other comprising the mechanism, which allows the engine block to be replaced by another engine block whose pistons have the same stroke and whose cylinder (s) have different bores,
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application (that in which it is applied to internal combustion engines), as well as certain embodiments (those which will be indicated below),
of said provisions; and more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, the machines of the type in question implying the application of these same provisions, the special elements and tools specific to their establishment, as well as the installations, fixed or mobile. (in particular motor vehicles), comprising similar machines.
And it can, in any event, be clearly understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawings, which supplement and drawings are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Figures 1, 2 and 3 of these drawings show, respectively in vertical section according to 1-1 fig. 3 (cylinder in elevation and uncut parts), in the same vertical section (cylinder cut) and in section according to 3-3 fig. 1, an internal combustion engine in the cylinder of which two opposed pistons can move in opposite directions and established in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 4 shows a similar section as in FIG.
3, but partial, an engine of the same type established in accordance with
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
'ment to a variant of the previous embodiment.
According to the invention, and more especially according to that of its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which preference should be given, proposing to establish a internal combustion engine, for example single cylindrical, four-stroke, having to include, in its cylinder, two opposed pistons, one goes about it as follows, or in a similar way.
One constitutes, as shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, this engine essentially: by said cylinder a supported by a frame b - which will also support all the other parts of the mechanism and established, as will first be assumed in some suitable manner - which cylinder is supposed to be horizontal axis, door, externally in its middle, or laterally as to. fig. 1, 2 and 3, or else, preferably, at its upper part as in FIG. 4, preferably also coming from cast iron at the same time as it, a valve box ± on which we will resell in what follows, and is advantageously provided with cooling fins; by said two opposed pistons d, introduced into cylinder a and arranged like the ordinary pistons of internal combustion engines;
by a horizontal motor shaft e, suitably journaled, in the frame at a level lower than that of cylinder a and at an appropriate distance from the latter, in the vertical plane perpendicular to the axis of said cylinder and passing through the middle of the latter ; by means suitable for allowing the pistons d to transform their reciprocating translational movements into a continuous rotational movement for the shaft e, which means are constituted, for each piston, by having recourse to a "balance" lever f as is will name in what
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
follows - more or less inclined in a vertical plane, articulated, for example in its middle, to the frame by the intermediary of an axis,
preferably with ball bearing, parallel to the axis of the shaft e and that we will assume, first of all, - edge, fixed, against what is shown for the balance located at the right in fig. 1, balance whose upper end is articulated to a link ± articulated, on the other hand, to the external face of said piston, and the other end itself articulated, by means of a link h., To a crankshaft i with two elbows fixed to the shaft e, which balances are free to oscillate respectively in two longitudinal slots a formed in the lower part of the cylinder, the whole so that the two balances are always symmetrical with respect to the vertical plane passing through the axis of the tree e;
and by means suitable for ensuring, between the two pistons, the arrival of the combustible mixture - obtained, as! 'ordinary, in a carburetor (not shown)' - and the outlet of the burnt gases, means which are constituted by two valves j1 contained in the valve box c, one for the intake, the other for the exhaust, whose vertical stems j are controlled respectively by two rocker arms k articulated to the frame and arranged for to be able to.
to raise and lower alternately by means of two rotary cams 1, of suitable shape, connected to the shaft e, for example by means of gears, which valves allow, through suitably established ducts, to introduce the combustible mixture between the two pistons and to release the burnt gases produced, after explosion, between said pistons.
The operation of the engine thus constituted and once fitted with its essential accessories, magneto, spark plug c1, etc., is understood by itself without there being any need to give any additional explanations about it.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
res, this engine fully responding to the sustndiqué goal; which motor is effectively protected against external agents, dust, water, etc. by the frame, formed in the form of a casing enclosing the balancers, the crankshaft with two elbows and the members connected thereto, casing arranged, in addition, to close the two ends of the cylinder a.
Preferably, a means suitable for allowing the dimensions of the explosion chamber to be varied at will, even when running, is combined with said motor, which means can be constituted in different ways, for example or (this arrangement not being shown) by articulating, to the two axes f1 of oscillation of the balances - axes made free in this case, that is to say no longer fixed to the frame -, the two opposite ends of two horizontal rods in the extension of one another and interconnected by a sleeve comprising two threads in opposite directions suitable for engaging respectively on the opposite ends, threaded in a corresponding manner, said rods, whereby it is possible, such as;
it is understood, by rotating said sleeve on itself in one direction or the other, for example by means of a helical wheel rotated by an endless screw, to bring one of the two closer or further away. the other the two pistons, consequently to decrease or increase the volume of the explosion chamber;
. or else, as actually shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, leaving the axis of oscillation,; [1 of one of the balancers articulated in a fixed pint of the frame, making the axis of articulation,; [1 of the other balance - for example, as represented, that which is to the right in fig.l - independent of said frame, and by establishing the latter axis in a cage m capable of sliding, through the intermediary of an eccentric shaft n set in rotation / mechanically,

in another cage o fixed to the frame, the whole arranged so that the movable articulation axis of the balance can, while remaining parallel to itself, be distant:
, 'against the action of springs p, or brought closer, by the action of the latter, to the fixed articulation of the other balance; or by having recourse to other means suitable for allowing the bringing together or the removal of the pistons d.
And, either one is satisfied to proceed as it has been said, or else, and better, instead of establishing the frame in any way, one can arrange in such a way, said

frame) that sufficient space exists between the cylinder axis' e. and the wall b1 of the crankcase supplying no more to, ies, j, to allow the engine block to be replaced by another engine block with a cylinder of different bore, but of the same stroke for the pistons;
which can be produced for example as shown in FIG. 4, that is to say by fixing the ends of the chosen cylinder - the different cylinders having the same length - respectively to the two parts of the casing in which the articulation axes of the balance bars are located, the whole so as to constitute a fixed block g. in a removable manner, for example by studs r, to the aforementioned p.aroi b1 of the housing.
It goes without saying, and as moreover already emerges from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts, having been more especially indicated; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants thereof, in particular: those where the motor, described would be arranged to serve as a motor-pump, motor-compressor, etc., in which case the pistons, for example, would be actuated. two pumps: two compressors, etc .. coupled directly to said pistons and in their extension, the arrangement described can also be applied to a generator set;
