11 peut être prévu en ligne plusieurs groupes identiques en respectant les données ci-après, sauf à prévoir un équilibrage correspondant à chaque cas;

-The present improvements relate to the explosive engines covered by main patent n.521,700, in which the four-stroke cycle takes place on one revolution of the crankshaft, by means of a special balance, moved by the piston and its connecting rod, and a secondary connecting rod receiving its movement from the balance to actuate the crankshaft.
Their purpose is to provide the embodiments provided for in the above-mentioned patent with variations in the arrangement of the engines and improvements in their operation.
Figures IX, X and XI show schematic arrangements of opposed cylinder engines, giving simultaneous explosions. In each of these figures, the phase shown of the four-step cycle is the end of the two simultaneous detents. The axis of oscillation 7 or 15 of the balance 5 and the axes 6 and 6 'of the heads of the primary connecting rods 4 and 4' are in a straight line. The arcs described by the detents are shown in bold lines. To obtain simultaneous explosions in the two opposite cylinders, it suffices to make simultaneous the respective operations of opening and closing of the intake valves and of the exhaust valves, as well as of ignition.
In Figure IX, the secondary connecting rod 9 is pulling in its two reciprocating movements. The movements of the pistons 2 and 2 'and of the primary connecting rods 4 and 4' are symmetrical and automatically balanced with respect to the axis 7 or 15 of the balance 5. The balancing of the joint 8 is to be ensured by known means.
In FIG. X, the secondary connecting rod 9 is pushing in the two reciprocating movements, and it has with the primary connecting rod 4 'a common journal 6'. This arrangement is particularly suitable for short stroke engines, since the stroke of crankshaft II must be maintained within reasonable limits.
However, it is good to consider that a greater stroke of the crankshaft II. facilitates mechanical movement and that its larger mass can replace part of the usual flywheel.
At the articulation 6 ', one of the connecting rods is provided with a fork (fork) for the proper distribution of the forces.
In FIG. XI, the secondary connecting rod 9 is pushing in its two reciprocating movements and it is provided with a fork at its articulation on the balance 5, which is preferably located inside the fork. A journal 8, in one piece., Passes through the balance 5, the secondary connecting rod 9 being articulated on the parts of this journal 8 projecting outside the balance 5, on either side of the latter. The latter can not move longitudinally or come out of its housing, thanks to the keying, of a known system, in the branches of the fork of the connecting rod 9. The spacing of the branches of this fork allows the free passage of the complete joint. 6 '.
As the primary connecting rods 4 and 4 'are balanced on the balance 5, it remains to balance on the latter the masses composing the articulation 8 and the corresponding part of the secondary connecting rod 9. As for the crankshaft II, it must be balanced for itself and the part of the secondary connecting rod that applies to it, and, to the extent that it will remain necessary, the usual reciprocating masses, pistons and primary connecting rods, to which must be added the masses of the balance 5 with its linings, and secondary connecting rod 9.
This arrangement makes it possible to establish the desired expansion stroke by lengthening or shortening the diameter, to be 6-6 ', while maintaining a reduced stroke at the crankshaft II.
For each of these three arrangements, it is possible to vary the proportion, between the intake and expansion strokes, by a de-

tries, by angular displacement, around the pivot 7 or 15 of the balance 5 of the linear axis passing through the center of the cylinders and through the center of the balance (horizontal axis of the figures) the cylinders I and I ', with their respective pistons , having to follow suit. Depending on the direction of travel there will be a decrease or an increase in the intake, against an increase or decrease in the trigger. The length of the connecting rods is to be adapted to the new arrangement.
The position of the crankshaft II and of the balance 5 can remain unchanged on the vertical axis of the system so as to maintain these two organs at the center of symmetry of the whole of the machine, if it is, for example, of a motor vehicle.
Several identical groups can be provided online while respecting the data below, except to provide a balancing corresponding to each case;
2 groups: 2 crankshafts at 180 at the crankshaft
3 groups: 3 crankshafts at 1200 at the crankshaft 4 groups: 4 at 90 at the crankshaft
5 groups: 5 crankshafts at 72 at the crankshaft
6 groups: 6 crankshafts at 60 at the crankshaft, etc.
A group consists of two opposing cylinders.
Of course, the forms and details of execution of the members described by way of example can be modified without departing from the invention.
