<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
d'un rendement élevé et d'un fonctionnement économi- que; (3) de fournir un appareil distillatoire du genre indi- que dans lequel des moyens d'enlever facilement et rapidement le dépôt de coke sont prévus;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Improvement in distillation.
The present invention relates to a process for the distillation of tar, oils and other litters, as well as to an apparatus for carrying out this process.
In the distillation of tar, oil and other oleaginous products, a horizontal still and, less frequently, a vertical still are employed, which are heated externally. The external heating of the still involves the loss of large amounts of heat, since the surface of the apparatus exposed to the heating fluid has relatively
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
small in comparison to the capacity of the device. It is quite frequent in practice to find that the useful surface area of the stilling apparatus is in the ratio of about two square feet per barrel of capacity.
These externally heated stills are expensive to use, especially in the case of crude oil refining, because in the distillation there is molecular dissociation or partial decomposition of the hydrocarbons and hence a separation of carbon which occurs. adheres to the bottom of the still. As we know, this carbon is a good insulator from the thermal point of view and as the distillation progresses it reaches in many cases up to five or seven centimeters in thickness. The deposition of carbon requires the use of a high temperature so that the necessary heat can be transmitted to the oil through the carbon.
The casing is thus red-hot and it becomes necessary, at intervals of about three months, to renew the bottom of the still. a great deal of time is also lost while the apparatus is allowed to cool to remove carbon deposits. This removal is done by Hand and requires considerable time.
The objects of the present invention are: (1) to provide a method and an apparatus for carrying out the method, in which the objections indicated above are eliminated and which further present certain other advantages as appearing. will appear in the sequel; (2) to provide a distillation apparatus which is particularly suitable for use in an installation of the kind indicated and which is of simple construction,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
high efficiency and economical operation; (3) to provide a distillation apparatus of the kind indicated in which means for easily and rapidly removing the coke deposit are provided;
(4) to provide a new and improved process of fractional condensation, and a new and improved plant for carrying out this process, and (5) to provide a new and improved process for the use of heat lost from the distillation apparatus.
The method of heating the distillation apparatus which is adopted is that in which a heating fluid is passed through a hollow body intended to be rotated in the distillation apparatus and to support the material to be distilled in the form of a film covering its surface.
The heating body is provided with stiffly projecting outer fins intended to radiate heat from the hollow body and provide a large surface area for the material to be distilled. Further, when the film is formed on the hollow body by immersing a portion thereof in the liquid contained in the apparatus, the fins serve to agitate the liquid.
The fins are preferably hollow so that the heating fluid can pass through them and it is advantageous to promote this distribution of the heating fluid by fixing on the path of the latter in the hollow body a deflector device which directs the fluid towards. the outer transverse limits of the body and consequently in the fins.

The distillation apparatus shown in figs. 1 and 2 comprises a casing or tank 2 supported by a suitable frame 4. This tank has a semi-cylindrical bottom 6,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
sides 8 flared upwards, an upper wall 10 and end walls 12. The interior of the tank is accessible by a longitudinal median opening made in the subject and closed by a cover 14. Pipes 16 evacuate the va- fears of the tank.
The still heater comprises a hollow body 18 which may be of heat resistant metal and has four hollow fins 20, projecting radially and extending along its length. As shown, the hollow body is substantially star shaped in cross section, but other forms of construction can be employed. It has hollow journals 22 rotating in bearings formed on flanges 24 fixed to the ends of the tank 2.
Stuffing boxes or gaskets are disposed at 26 between the journals and the bearings and are shielded from the heat of the still by liners 28 which may be of refractory bricks and are arranged inside the journals. Hot gases or other heating fluid, preferably heated outside the still, can be. sent into the casing 18 by a pipe 30 opening axially in the journal which is to the left of FIG. 1.
The hot gases leave the hollow body or rotor 18 through the right-hand journal 22 and gain a pipe 32 connected to this journal. A diverter device 34 is placed inside the rotor 18 and comprises an axial tube supported by means of suitable crosses 38 on the interior surface. of the rotor and having its ends closed by heads 36. This diverter device forces the gases to flow into the fins so as to heat them uniformly and to use the heat.

to the greatest extent possible. The rotor 18 is intended to be actuated by a toothed wheel 40 fixed to the journal 22 - the right hand and connected by a suitable transmission to a motor 42.
Each of the rotor fins is covered on the outside by a cast iron plate 44 which closely matches it and is held in place by appropriately arranged bolts 46. The space between the adjacent longitudinal edges of the neighboring plates is filled by means of filler strips 47 which are preferably of wood. The cast iron plates 44 can be easily removed and replaced on the corresponding fins, through the opening in the top of the tank, by means of a hoist. The role of the filling pieces 47 is to form an edge along which the carbon deposits can be easily broken up during the removal of the plates.

The fins agitate the contents of the tank, which accelerates
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
strongly distillation and prevents the formation of a mixture of liquid and vapor in oils containing water.
When the apparatus is operating to make coke, the material to be distilled can also, instead of being sent through the pipe 48, be introduced through a pipe 49 opening into the top of the still (fig. 6) and fitted with preferably a nozzle for dispersing the material in a thin film on the fins.
Regardless of the pipe through which the material is fed, there is at all times a thin film of material exposed to a large heating surface.
When the apparatus is operating to make coke, as described above, the coke settles on the cast iron plates 44. When these plates are covered with coke, it is sufficient to remove the top cover of the apparatus and '' remove the plates, then replace them immediately with a new set without much loss of time. While the new series is in operation, the other can be freed from coke and prepared for new use.
It is readily seen that the internal heating and the rotation of the rotor permit the continuous distillation of tar or other materials, the degree of distillation being controlled by the degree of temperature, the speed of the rotor and the feed rate.
The waste gas heat from the heater of the distillation apparatus can be used to preheat the incoming material to be distilled. For this purpose, a pipe 50 (fig. 3) can connect the outlet of the burnt gases of the heating device to the gas pipes of a suitable heater 52 which is placed in the supply pipe.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
material to the still, the tubes for heating the oil or tar in the heater being in communication with the still through a supply pipe 54.
Waste gases from the heater can also be used for fractional condensation of the volatilized material exiting the still.
In fig. 5, there is a series of tubular condensers 56 whose condensing tubes communicate in series with the steam outlet at the top of the still, and the spaces surrounding the tubes in all condensers, except the last, communicate in series with the steam outlet of the distillation apparatus is in communication by a pipe 58 with the tubes of the condenser closest to the still of the still apparatus and the tubes of the different condensers communicate by pipes 60.
The spaces surrounding the tubes of the first condenser are in communication by pipe 62 with the exhaust gas outlet of the heater, and the spaces surrounding the tubes of the first three condensers communicate by pipes 64 , the last condenser being cooled by water.
The gases are sucked through the different condensers by means of a suitable fan 66. The temperatures of the gases entering the first three condensers are automatically regulated by an appropriate thermostatic device 68 which communicate by pipes 70 with the pipes. gas inlet of these device condensers being intended to regulate the admission of cold air into the gas inlet pipes by means of registers 71.
The amount of condensing liquid is regulated by
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
the temperature of the gas surrounding the condenser tubes.
Thus, in the first condenser, closest to the still, the temperature of the gas is such that only the higher fraction, usually called the 300 to 36o C fraction or heavy oil fraction, is separate.
The gas which has been cooled to some extent by the first condenser then passes to the second condenser and condenses the Following fraction, which is called the 230 to 300 C fraction or creosote oil fraction. In the third condenser, the next fraction called fraction 170 to 230 C or medium oil fraction is separated. In the last condenser, which is cooled by water, separates the light oil with low boiling point.
If the gases passing from one condenser to the other are too hot to cool the vapors to the desired point, the thermostatic control device 68, acting in conjunction with dampers 71 described above, causes the introduction of. cold air. The extractor or fan 66 makes it possible to regulate the speed of the gases lost throughout the system.
The installation shown in fig. 7 can be used for carrying out another variant of the improved process and is particularly suitable for extracting, by distillation, oil from tar and for extracting, by distillation of the crude oil, the fractions to be low boiling point. This process or system is both closed and continuous. ;, the partial pressure created by the passage of hot gas through the distillation apparatus.
This installation also uses the rotary heating device 18 and the distillation vessel 2, the liquid to be distilled being spread in a thin film over the aliquots.

blades of the heating device or rotor, as in the embodiment shown in FIG. 6. The undistilled residue which settles in the bottom of the tank 2 is continuously withdrawn through a pipe 72 opening near the bottom of the tank. This pipe 72 preferably has a siphon 73 (fig. 8) to keep the undistilled residue at a level a little lower than the heater.
The product to be distilled is extracted from a. reservoir or any suitable supply vessel by a pump 74 which delivers the liquid to a heat exchanger
75 from where it passes through a pipe 76 in a heat exchanger
78 and from 1à, through a pipe 80, to the still.
The gases coming from a combustion chamber enter at 82 a heater 82 and pass from the into the casing 18 of the rotor and into the atmosphere through a chimney 86. Instead of being sent to the atmosphere, these gases could be used to preheat the liquid to be distilled, in the manner shown in FIG. 3. At the same time as the heater 82 is turned on, a fan 88 is activated and since the system is a closed circuit, this fan causes the gas produced by the process to flow from end to end. other, continuously. As it circulates, this gas passes into the heater 82 where it comes into indirect contact with the hot gases coming from the combustion chamber and it is thus reheated.
In this state, it leaves the heater 82 through a pipe 90 and enters the upper part of the tank 2 of the still. The gas rising in the vessel 2 passes through a pipe 91 into the gas pipes of the heat exchanger 75. The temperature of the contents of the vessel 2 is such that this gas carries with it a certain quantity of gas.

vapor when it leaves the tank 2 and passes through a pipe 91, and this mixture of gas and vapor comes into indirect contact with the entering liquid when it passes through the heat exchanger
75, so that it is cooled while the liquid is reheated. Part of the steam is thus condensed and this condensate separates in a retaining tank 92.
The gas still containing a small part of the vapor leaves the retaining tank 92 through a pipe 94 and passes through the fan 88 to a water-cooled condenser 96, where practically complete condensation of the vapor occurs. still remaining in the gas. However, there is a very small amount of vapor entrained by the gas. The condensate is discharged into a holding tank 98. The substantially vapor-free gas leaves the condenser 96 through a pipe 100 and enters the reheater 82, where it is reheated again on its way to the tank. 2. This installation therefore forms a continuous and closed circuit in which the gas produced by the process is circulated repeatedly.
If an open circuit were employed in which, at a point between condenser 96 and heater 82, gas would be vented to atmosphere, there would be some vapor content. Although it can be said that after leaving the condenser 96 the gas is practically free of vapor, it actually contains a small percentage of vapor and in continuous operation, i.e. during ;; days, this loss is really appreciable.
It is recommended to keep this closed circuit under a constant pressure and in order to provide this pressure, a pulsometer 104 is available which is connected by a pipe 106 to a pipe 100.

When the liquid entering tank 2 through the pipe
80 is dispersed on the rotor 18 which is heated internally by hot gases, this liquid is subjected to the heat of the hearth gases circulating inside the rotor and also to the heat of the hot gas which is introduced by the pipe
90 in tank 2. If the speed of the rotor is properly adjusted, during the time it takes for each fin on which the liquid has been dispersed to reach its lower position, the distillation has been completed in the sense that all has been removed except for the heavy residue. All the residue from this distillation overflows through the pipe 72 into the heat exchanger 78. In this heat exchanger there is a transfer of heat between the liquid which passes through it and the residue leaving the tank. 2.
This residue is thus cooled to such a degree that it can be barreled and withdrawn from the heat exchanger 78 by means of a pipe 108.
This method takes advantage of the advantage of the rotary heating element and at the same time it takes advantage of what is known as partial pressure created by the hot gas introduced into the vessel 2 through the pipe 90. This partial pressure facilitates vaporization and decreases molecular dissociation.
