<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Process for the treatment, by heat and pressure, of heavy mineral oils, distillation products from excavation or liquids containing carbon in suspension.
First certificate of addition to patent N 307.359 of December 13, 1922 filed in the name of the Société Internationale Bergin Compagnie voor Olie en Kolen Ohemie.
Application filed in France on July 7, 1926.
In the main patent it has been described a process for the simultaneous desulfurization and hydrogenation of heavy mineral oils, their distillation products or coal distillation products, or even liquids containing carbon in suspension, this process being characterized in that these starting materials are treated with metals. alkaline pre-

hydrogen gas under pressure and at high temperature (above 300 3), optionally with the addition of materials such as fuller's earth, charcoal or coke powder.
When this hydrogenation refining is employed with starting materials containing a high proportion of impurities in the form of oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur compounds, the process requires a relatively large amount of sodium, and therefore becomes impractical.
Applicants have recognized that in such cases it is expedient to first strongly heat the alkaline or impure starting materials, adding strong-acting lino-earth materials thereto, and heating under hydrogen pressure. .
There already takes place an advanced hydrogenation and refining; a pre-product is thus obtained, very suitable for subsequent refining by hydrogen using metallic sodium, and requiring only the use of a reduced quantity of sodium.
For example, we can proceed as follows:
1 - 100 kgs. 65% anthracene, the main impurity of which is, as we know, carbazol which forms a compound with sodium, are heated in an autoclave under hydrogen pressure, and with 5 kg. of solid caustic potash. At a temperature of about 400 J. there is a fairly strong absorption of hydrogen which can be further accelerated if the temperature is raised.
The product of this pretreatment is an inconsistent crystalline slurry, by means of which, by distillation until yellow vapors appear, an intermediate product is obtained, with a yield of 80 to 85%. it is then sufficient, in order to produce the refining by hydrogenation, according to the main patent, to use from 3 to 5% of sodium, to obtain a liquid product which is a mixture of higher hydrogenated compounds of crude anthracene freed from carbazol.
Distillation residues from the preparation of the pre-product can be. treated with water, for recovery,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in the form of lye, caustic potash.
2 - It is possible to start from a distillation product of a crude lubricating oil obtained by dissociation of the coal under the action of heat and a high pressure of hydrogen. To remove the oxygenates giving rise to the production of resin and any other impurities capable of consuming sodium, this product is heated with caustic potassium under hydrogen pressure, at a temperature of approximately 400 C..
: This operation, which results in the absorption of hydrogen, destroys in particular the bodies liable to form resins. The preliminary product obtained is then washed and dried, which can therefore advantageously be subjected to the refining and hydrogenation processes by means of sodium.
The addition of porous materials, advantageously already employed in the process which is the subject of the main patent, can be even more advantageously employed with the new process; in other words, one can, at the same time as the alkaline or alkaline-earth materials, use, for the preliminary treatment, porous materials such as fuller's earth, etc ... or even metal oxides, etc. ......
The process can be carried out continuously if two or more autoclaves connected in series are employed.
