<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

DESCRIPTION - 71- Watertight wall formed by sheet piling and method for producing the wall
The present invention relates to a watertight wall intended for waste discharges and formed of sheet piles made up of double-T elements, intermediate Z-sections and metal fastening elements, it being specified that the edges of the intermediate Z-sections have a thickened cross-section in the shape of a club and that one edge is bent, and that the intermediate Z-shaped sections are connected together using the metal fastening elements.
The invention also relates to a method for producing the sealed wall.
Landfills with a high risk potential, in particular in the presence of high ground water, even current, must be shielded in order to prevent an emission of polluting substances in the surrounding ground, in the underground water pipes or in the yards of receiving water.
A tight wall surrounding a landfill is subject to very high requirements. It must for example have several sealing elements.
A permanent functional check (tightness check) and a simple possibility of retouching in the event of possible faults are also desirable, as well as the possibility of carrying out a flow slope towards the discharge inside the sealed wall, which prevents emission and allows drying of the discharge at the same time.
To make watertight walls of this type, walls are preferably used which avoid having to dig an already contaminated site, near an old landfill, because such masses of cuttings are then considered as waste and must make subject to costly treatment. Double-walled sheet piles driven into the ground using a threshing device are suitable.
To combine sheet piles, means are known to connect to each other and to other elements, supports and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
profiles, in different ways, sheet piles in Z comprising connecting profiles in the shape of clubs extending along the edges, using metal fastening elements in H.
According to DE-OS 28 19 737, in particular FIG. 4a, there is known a sealed wall made of sheet piles using double T elements and intermediate Z-shaped profiles whose edges are thickened in the shape of clubs, in cross section, in order to be connected using metal fasteners. This known wall is double. Four intermediate Z-shaped profiles are tightly connected to the wings of each double-T element. The free edges of the intermediate Z-shaped profiles are bent (see figure 1).
On one side of the wall section, the metal fastening elements surrounding the club-shaped edges are tightly connected to the intermediate Z-shaped profiles and constitute a threaded fastening element, a sealed contact being made between it ci and the bent end zone introduced from the intermediate Z-shaped section.
A process for sealing sheet pile joints before the pile driving operation is described in DE 21 42 957 C3. This process involves introducing a plastic material into the joints of the sheet pile, which solidifies to form a cellular product. To seal landfills in which corrosive materials can also be deposited, this method is only applicable to a limited extent, if not at all applicable.
From the state of the art, the invention aims to develop a barrier wall which is made of sheet piles, which is sealed and which allows permanent leakage control, touch-ups and simple production.
This object is achieved by a watertight wall of the type specified in the introduction, which is characterized in that it is constructed from elements to be inserted by prefabricated threshing connected to each other, in that each
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
push-in element consists of a double-T element and four intermediate Z-sections which can be connected together at the factory, in a leaktight manner, preferably by welding, and on which a fastening element is then mounted metallic. The four edges of the double-T element are connected by a weld joint to four intermediate Z-shaped sections, so as to form, on both sides, sealing chambers and, thus, a double wall. The sealing chamber filled with a sealing mass also acts as a bilateral sealing.
If, despite this, a leak appears after a certain period of time, the penetrating liquid will only arrive between the profiles up to the chamber, in which it could be detected. It is advantageous for this that the welded joints provided between elements applied against each other, for example between the free ends of the Z-shaped connection profiles, are made in a non-continuous manner. This also allows leaks to be detected in the area of the metal fasteners in the chambers.
According to other features of the present invention, the free end zones of two intermediate Z-shaped sections which are not connected to the double-T element are applied against one another, in pairs, by defining closed cells on either side of the central branch of the double-T element. The edges of the free end zones applied against each other are bent outwards, defining a certain spacing. On one side of the push-in element, a fastening element surrounding the club-shaped edges is connected to the intermediate Z-shaped sections by sealed and continuous weld joints, said fastening element constituting a fastening element to put on.
According to another characteristic, a sealing chamber is defined between the attachment element to be threaded by an element to be inserted and the free bent end zones introduced into said element.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of attachment, and finally the sealing chamber is filled with a sealing mass.
Advantageously, the sealed wall has corner portions and elbow portions. For the elbow parts, one or more short Z-shaped intermediate profiles are mounted at an edge of the double-T element, while for the corner parts, a pair of intermediate Z-shaped profiles is connected in a manner fixed and waterproof at the edges of a wing of the double T element.
According to another characteristic, the intermediate Z-shaped sections are interconnected, at their free end zones applied one against the other, by non-continuous weld joints.
The metal fastening element has an H configuration and consists of two curved upper wings which face each other and are connected to each other by a straight branch. But it can also be defined by two metal H-shaped fastening elements in which the lower right wing is only provided on one side of the right arm, and which are firmly connected to each other continuously, at one end, and not continuously, at the other end.
The sealant provided in the seal chamber is an expandable sealant. The cross section of said sealing chamber is square.
The fixed objective is also achieved by a method of the type described in the introduction, which is characterized in that the elements to be inserted each provided with a continuous square flat steel filling the open sealing chamber and detachably fixed therein. , are hammered into the ground continuously and successively, using a wide threshing helmet, it being specified that the following element to be inserted, with its attachment element to be put on, is pressed by threshing so as to surround the edges of the free end zones of the Z-profiles of the previous push-in element, in that, once the next push-in element is pressed, the flat steel is removed from the chamber
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
sealing of the previous push-in element,
and in that the sealing chamber is permanently filled with a sealing mass after the flat steel has been removed.
Thanks to the fact that the elements are driven into the ground using a device, it is not necessary to remove masses of contaminated earth, which poses the problem of purification as it appears with an underground curtain structure.
Since the tight wall is double, a permanent check of the tightness by known methods can be done. For this purpose, humidity detectors can for example be placed in the free cells of the elements to be inserted. If leaks are found, the defect can be eliminated by replacing the element to be inserted or by filling it with a sealing material such as bentonite, for example.
The free cells of the sheet pile can also be used to achieve a defined flow slope for the evacuation of liquid out of the landfill. For this purpose, pumps bring up the liquid accumulating in these cells. For mounting and sealing the wall, prefabricated push-in elements are hammered in continuously and successively using a threshing device. It is advantageous for this to use a wide threshing helmet. If we attach importance to free cells over a great height, it is also advantageous that the element to be inserted has a special foot configuration which quickly results in the formation of a tampon.
The elements to be inserted comprise, in their sealing chamber, a preferably square flat steel which is removably fixed in said chamber. Advantageously, the element to be inserted comprising the sealing chamber must be inserted in the direction of threshing, so that the next element, with the attachment element to be threaded which constitutes an empty chamber, can to be depressed
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
by surrounding the edges of the free end zone and, thus, the sealing chamber. The square steel can then be removed from the sealing chamber and reused.
The square free space thus obtained is then completely filled, over its entire height, with a sealing mass, preferably a mass of expandable plastic. The filling can be done with a thickening liquid, using high pressure injection lances, or with a malleable mass which is introduced in sections from bottom to top and packed using a punch. The infiltration paths existing at each attachment element are thus sealed.
Discharges can be surrounded by this tight wall so that polluting substances cannot escape into the surrounding terrain.
Other objects, advantages and characteristics of the present invention will emerge more clearly from the following detailed description of embodiments thereof, given by way of non-limiting example with reference to the appended drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a top view of a ramming element with, on one side, a threading fastening element and, on the other side, a fastening element comprising a flat steel in a sealing chamber, the FIG. 2 is a top view of a connection by fastening elements formed of two metallic Peiner fastening elements serving as threading fastening elements, and of a sealing chamber containing a flat steel,

Figure 5 is a top view of a sealed wall having a wall portion with an angular configuration at 30 degrees on each side, and Figure 6 is a top view of a sealed wall having a wall portion with 90 degree angular configuration.
The push-in element 4 shown in FIG. 1 consists of a double T element 1, four intermediate Z-shaped profiles 2, a metal fastening element 3 provided at the club-shaped edges 10 of the free end zones 8 of the intermediate profiles in Z 2, and of a flat steel 13 provided in the sealing chamber 11 which is defined by the other club-shaped edges 10 of the free ends 8 of the intermediate profiles in Z 2 .
The intermediate profiles in Z 2 are tightly connected to the edges 18 of the double T element 1 by solder joints 14, and define on both sides of the central branch 6 of the element 1 of the free cells 5. The solder joints 14 provided between the club-shaped edges 10 and the wings 21 of the attachment element 3 must be sealed from one end to the other. At their end zones 8, the intermediate sections in Z 2 are provided with weld joints 20 which need not necessarily be sealed.
The threading attachment element 7 is located on the side of the insertion element 4 opposite the direction of threshing 9.
FIG. 2 shows a connection by fastening elements between two push-in elements 4a, 4b, with which two metal fastening elements 23 reproduced by means of the removal of a wing-forming element are joined by welding at two points 14,20, at their lower surfaces 24.
The weld joint 20 directed in the direction of threshing is not continuous or leaktight, unlike the weld joint 14 located at the other end of the lower surface 24.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
In the sealing chamber 11, which is defined by the club-shaped ends 10 of the two end zones 8 of the preceding push-in element 4b, there is a flat steel 13 which can be removed once the next push-in element 4a has been pushed. FIG. 3 shows connections by fastening elements comprising a sealing chamber 11 already filled with an expandable sealing mass 12. The metal fastening element 3 visible in the figure has a continuous and straight branch 22 which connects the domed wings 21 of the attachment element.
FIGS. 4 to 6 show different zones of watertight wall comprising corner and elbow parts 16, 17, 17a which define different angles 28, 29.
FIG. 4 shows an elbow portion 17a which makes it possible to obtain an angle 28 of 30 degrees. For this purpose, a short Z-shaped intermediate section 2a has been mounted on the double T element 1. The use of two intermediate Z-shaped sections 2a at different edges 18 of the rear surface 19 of the double element T 1 allows two angles 28 of 30 degrees (fig. 5) or an angle 29 of 90 degrees (fig.
6), depending on the way in which the Z profiles 2a are welded to the edges 18 of the double-T element 1.
