<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La figure 1 représente une vue arrière d'un véhicule de type fourgonnette sur lequel est monté un cadre porte-bicyclettes ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Device for securing a bicycle carrier frame to the tailgate of a van-type motor vehicle
The present invention relates to a device for securing a bicycle carrier frame to the tailgate of a motor vehicle of the van type. As is known, van type vehicles are provided with a tailgate which closes the access opening to the interior space or the passenger compartment.
The tailgate is hinged on an upper horizontal axis so that it can turn outwards when it is lifted during opening. To close the tailgate, there is a lock located at the level of the bottom rail, immediately above the bumper. To allow the transport of bicycles with such vehicles, there are commercially available frames which provide hooking means to the upper and lower edges of the tailgate.
However, it has been found that, when the frames are loaded with bicycles, there is often a deflection of the hinges of the tailgate which determines the descent of the latter and causes problems during opening and closing. In addition, it has been found that the frames, due to the significant weight which weighs on them and the vibrations which occur during transport journeys, are subject to sagging. In particular, it may happen that
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
hooking means tend to disengage from the lower edge of the tailgate and to come out of the slot that the tailgate forms with its interior space, with the consequences which result therefrom, namely the loss of load and the damage to the frame and a danger to traffic.
The technical objective of the present invention is therefore to offer a device making it possible to overcome the drawbacks mentioned above.
Within the framework of this objective, an object of the present invention aims to produce a very flexible device to be used which can be applied to the various types of vehicles in circulation and existing frames.
This objective and this object are achieved by a device characterized in that it comprises at least one sleeve in which is guided a stud having an end projecting from the sleeve and movable against the action of elastic means, the sleeve aforementioned being provided with means for attaching to the frame so that the stud, in the closed position of the tailgate, bears resiliently on a contact surface of the motor vehicle or of the rear bumper under the lower edge of the tailgate, so as to stress up this frame or this tailgate.
Other details of the invention will be more evident in the light of the following description of a preferred embodiment given by way of example with reference to the attached drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a rear view of a van type vehicle on which is mounted a bicycle carrier frame;
2 shows a side view along the plane II-II of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a sectional view at more
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
large scale of the device according to the invention; and
FIG. 4 represents a view along the plane IV-IV of FIG. 3.
We now refer to the aforementioned figures. The reference notation 1 designates the vehicle and the reference notation 2 the tailgate which closes access to the passenger compartment or the interior space.
The tailgate 2 is articulated at the level of the upper beam so that it can be lifted by rotation in direction A.
The lower edge of the tailgate 2 touches the upper part of the rear bumper 3 which in principle protrudes beyond the rear of the vertical plane of the tailgate.
In fact, the frame 4 comprises an upper semi-frame 5 and a lower semi-frame 6 having a U-shape with pairs of uprights 7 and 8 parallel to each other. The uprights 7 are connected by a cross member 9 provided with hooks 10 capable of hanging on the upper edge of the tailgate 2. The uprights 7 are inserted in the uprights 8 which, in the lower part, are connected by a cross member 11. From the same as the cross-member 9, the cross-member 11 has hooks 12 which apply to the lower edge of the tailgate 2.
The uprights 7 are fixed in the uprights 8 using respective locking devices 13 so as to keep the hooks 10 and 12 engaged on the upper and, respectively, lower edges of the tailgate.
The reference notation 14 designates a support articulated on arms 15 which project from the frame 6 and the reference notation 16 a bar which connects the uprights 7. The support 14 can rotate between a vertical position and a horizontal position. The
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
horizontal position of the support 14 is established by a support against stepped shoulders 17 formed in the lower uprights 6.
On the support 14 are fixed two U-shaped profiles 18 to support two bicycles which can be wedged in the upper part on a tube 19 articulated on the bar 16.
As mentioned in the preamble, if the weight on the frame is excessive, the tailgate hinges may undergo bending, which may cause the tailgate to be off-center and embedded in its seat, and difficulties in opening and closing. In addition, if the frame 4 undergoes deformations due to the load and the movement of the vehicle, the lower hooks 12 can come off the tailgate.
To overcome this drawback, two devices 20 according to the present invention are applied to the uprights 8 of the lower frame 6. As results from FIG. 3, each device comprises a sleeve 21 inside which is arranged a spring 22 acting under compression. The spring 22 is supported by one end on an upper contact element consisting of a plug 23 screwed onto the sleeve 21 and, by the lower end, on a stud 24 guided in the sleeve 21. The stud 24 has a shape of mushroom so that the head can rest on an annular shoulder 25 formed at the lower end of the sleeve 21, while the tail of the stud projects from the sleeve and has a hemispherical end.
The devices 20 are fixed to the uprights 8 of the semi-frame 6 via a pair of studs 26 which respectively consist of two jaws 27 which each enclose an upright 8 and the respective sleeve 21 and are tightened thereon by screws 28.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The devices 20 are fixed to the uprights 8 at a height such that the studs 24, when the tailgate 2 is in the closed position, bear on the upper face of the bumper 3. In practice, the thrust of the springs 22 will be such that will be exerted on the frame an upward thrust likely to counterbalance the weight of the tailgate and the bicycle weighing on the hinges of the tailgate and, at the same time, to ensure the retention of the hooks 12 on the lower edge of the tailgate . Ultimately, therefore, the devices 20 compensate for possible deformations of the hinges and of the frame 4 by neutralizing the effects.
It should be noted that the bumpers are normally shaped so that their upper face is turned towards the rear. This promotes, on the one hand, the sliding of the studs 24 on the bumper 3 during the closing of the tailgate and the compression of the springs 22. If the inclination of the upper face of the bumper is excessive, it can a component appears which tends to release the devices 20 from the bumper. To overcome this drawback, one can provide two plates applicable on the bumper in which are provided adequate seats which, once engaged by the studs 24, provide retention on the frame, in the thrust position.
The present invention can be subject to numerous modifications and variants while remaining within the scope of the following claims. For example, the spring can be replaced by a pressurized gas acting on the stud guided in a sealed manner in the sleeve.
