<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

METHOD FOR ASSEMBLING FURNITURE AND ASSEMBLY PIECE FOR PERFORMING THIS METHOD.
The subject of the present invention is a method of assembling furniture, in particular of wood, consisting of rectangular panels and cross-shaped frames in which the panels are inserted.
It also relates to an assembly part for the execution of this process.
The object of the invention is an assembly process in two phases, one which is done in the factory, the other which is done on site, at the customer's. This subdivision of the assembly into two phases enables the dismantled piece of furniture to be sent, packed in packages of relatively small volume. At the customer, on site, the furniture can be assembled very quickly by simple fitting of the delivered parts and placement of tightening screws forming part of the delivery.
Another object of the invention is that the same model of assembly part may be suitable for assembling the crosspieces at all the corners of the piece of furniture, this piece of assembly being invisible when the piece of furniture is mounted.
To get these. results, the method according to the invention is characterized in that, in a first phase, at each corner of a frame, two cross members are joined together by means of an assembly part comprising means which are inserted in the grooves of the crosspieces, in that in a second phase, a third crosspiece is assembled with the two crosspieces joined between them, by means of this same connecting piece, and in that a tightening of this third cross member against the two cross members joined between them by means of a lever engaged in an opening in said assembly part.
On the other hand, an assembly part for the execution of the above process is characterized in that it consists of a bent plate with perpendicular extensions, substantially the same thickness as that of the grooves of the crosspieces, and in that that said flat bent or an element integral with it comprises at least one transverse opening for the fastening between beams and carrying out the tightening.
In the description below, the invention is explained using two examples of execution with reference to the accompanying drawing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In this drawing, FIGS. 1 and 2 are exploded perspective views of corners of frames produced by means of crosspieces. The sleepers are partially cut. FIG. 3 is a view of a clamping screw on a larger scale than that used in FIGS. 1 and 2.
In Figure 1 are shown, in perspective, three cross members 1, 2, 3, grooved to allow the insertion of panels 4, for example of wood. In the drawing these panels are partially cut. The crosspieces 1, 2 and 3 are assembled by means of an assembly piece to form a corner of the piece of furniture. The assembly takes place in two phases. The first phase of the process is carried out in the factory. It makes it possible to manufacture two-dimensional units which do not take up much space in a package. The second phase is the assembly on site, at the customer.
During the first phase, two grooved wooden crossbeams 1 and 2 are assembled by means of an assembly piece comprising a base 5, a bent plate 6, and two extensions 7, perpendicular to the bent plate 6, as well as a stud. 8. The base 5 is placed in a housing 9 milled in the crosspieces 1 and 2. The bent plate 6 is inserted in the grooves of the crosspieces 1 and 2. The connection between the crosspieces 1 and 2 and the assembly part is carried out for example by coLLage. IT can obviously be done in any other appropriate way.
During this first phase, some of the

panels framed with sleepers that don't take up much space in a package. The customer thus receives packages which include panels framed with sleepers, sleepers and panels not framed with sleepers and clamping screws. He can thus carry out the assembly himself very easily since the assembly parts already equip the framed panels delivered.
During the second phase which therefore takes place at the client's place, at each corner of the furniture, a cross-member 3 and possibly panels 4 are assembled with the two cross-members 1 and 2 joined together. To this end, each cross member 3 is provided with a hole 10 at each of its ends to serve as a housing for a stud 8 of an assembly part. Each stud 8 comprises a transverse opening 11 in LaqueLLe can be inserted a clamping wedge 12, for example in the form of a truncated cone at the end of a screw 13. This screw, called clamping, shown in

FIG. 3 is introduced through a hole 14, made at the factory at each end of a cross member 3. In the drawing, the cross member 3 is cut at the axis of the hole 14 which ends at the hole 10.
According to FIG. 2, it is also possible to design the assembly piece without base 5 and without stud 8. In this case, as shown in FIG. 2, the joining between the crosspieces 1 and 2 can also be done by gluing. However, it may be useful to locate the bent plate 6 by means of a screw or stud 15 passing through one of the crossbars 1 or 2. This screw or stud 15 engages in a transverse hole 16 in the bent plate 6 This operation must obviously be carried out before the cross members 1 and 2 are assembled together.
On the other hand, at least one clamping wedge 12 is provided for engaging in a transverse hole (17) in one of the extensions 7.
This clamping wedge is also located at the end of a screw 13 as shown in FIG. 3 and is guided in a hole 18 made in the cross-member 3.
The assembly parts can be made of metal, in particular brass or bronze or plastic, for example polyacetal etc., or any other suitable material.
The profiles of the sleepers shown in Figures 1 and 2 are square profiles. They are preferably identical between them for a given type of furniture, in order to also allow the use of a single model of assembly part for all the corners of the furniture. The profiles can obviously differ greatly from a square profile and present, for example bevels, rounded and moldings responding to considerations of aesthetics or minimization of weight, while saving a great robustness of the whole.
The clamping shims 12 are preferably conical shims at the end of the screws 13 as shown in FIG. 3. These screws 12, inserted into holes 14 or 18 of the crosspieces 3 are preferably guided by threaded sleeves, not shown, encased in holes 14 or 18.
