Abstract
Un aparato y método para producir trioxido de azufre (SO3) emplea un quemadorde azufre para producir dioxido de azufre (SO2) y un convertidor catalíticopara convertir el SO2 a SO3. El convertidor catalítico comprende un recipiente que contiene unapl uralidad de canales espaciados entre si, cada uno de loscuales tiene un extremo de corriente arriba que comunica con un multiple de corriente arriba y un extremo de corriente abajo que comunica con un multiple decorriente abajo. Cada canalcomprende una unica etapa de conversion continua e ininterrumpida que termina en el extremo de corriente abajo delproveniente del quemador de azufre es introducida dentro del multiple de corriente arriba y fluye como una corriente a través de cadauno de los canales dondela corriente es enfirada y el SO2 es convertido en la etapa de conversion SO3 para producir en el extremo de corriente abajo del canal; una segunda mezclaformada esencialmente por SO3 y aire. La primera mezcla no es enfriadaentre el que mador de azufre y el convertidor. La corriente que fluye a través de laetapa de conversion es mantenida a una temperatura que sustenta la conversion a SO2 a SO3, sin diluir la corriente con un fluido de enfriamiento ni desviarlacorriente fuera del c anal contenido en el recipiente del convertidor.
