DERMATOLOGICAL COMPOSITION
INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a dermatological composition for the treatment of skin conditions in mammals.
In this specification, the term ‘mammals’ includes within its scope, but is not limited to, humans.
Known compositions for the treatment of skin conditions usually contain chemical substances, many of which have a number of negative side effects to the user of the composition.
South African patent number ZA2003/8216 filed in the name of the applicant of this patent application, relates to a method and medicament for the treatment of immuno-deficiency conditions. The medicament comprises coal ash, grape seeds, pine bark extracts, a tincture of African potato (Hypoxis rooperi), calcium ascorbate and bioflavanoids. The medicament is effective in the treatment of immuno-deficiency conditions such as HIV/AIDS and cancer. The medicament improves and maintains the immune system of a user, reduces the frequency of opportunistic infections, accelerates healing and assists in the promotion of well-being.
’ The applicant has subsequently found that a composition similar to the above medicament is an effective dermatological composition for the treatment of skin conditions in mammals.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a dermatological composition for the treatment of skin conditions in mammals, which is a useful alternative to known compositions.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a dermatological composition for the treatment of skin conditions in mammals comprising a pharmaceutically effective amount of coal ash in a suitable dermatologically acceptable carrier.
The carrier may be in a form selected from the group consisting of a liquid, a gel, a lotion and a cream.
The coal ash may comprise from 2% to 10%, preferably 2.48% of the composition on a mass per mass basis.
The composition may further include any one or more of the additives selected from the group consisting of grapeseed extract, lemon bioflavonoid, Hypoxis hemerocallidea (African potato), calcium ascorbate, a preservative and a fragrance.
The grapeseed extract may comprise between 0.02% and 5%, preferably 0.03% of the composition on a mass per mass basis.
The lemon bioflavonoid may comprise between 0.001% and 2%, preferably 0.01% of the composition on a mass per mass basis.
The Hypoxis hemerocallidea may comprise from 0.05% to 20%, preferably 0.26% of the composition on a mass per mass basis.
The calcium ascorbate may comprise from 0.01% to 2%, preferably 0.01% of the composition on a mass per mass basis.
The preservative may be alcohol.
The alcohol may be from 90% to 98% pure alcohol, preferably 94.4% pure alcohol.
The alcohol may comprise from 0.02% to 15% of the composition on a mass per mass basis.
: The fragrance may comprise from 0.01% to 5%, preferably 0.09% of the composition on a mass per mass basis.
The composition may be in the form of an ointment, a cream, a soap, a paste, a lotion or liquid soap.
The carrier may be in the form of any one of the following: aqueous cream, aqueous lotion and alcohol.
The carrier may comprise from 5% to 98% of the composition on a mass per mass basis.
The composition may be effective in the treatment of any one or more skin conditions selected from the group consisting of fungal and bacterial infections; pimples and acne; ulcers of the mouth; sunburn; abrasions; chafing; chapping; itching; diaper rash; and eczema.
The composition may further be effective as a cosmetic composition for use in toning and revitalising the skin; reducing dark pigmentation and dark circles under the eyes; reducing wrinkles; reducing stretch marks; and in nourishing the skin.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a pharmaceutically effective amount of coal ash in a suitable dermatologically acceptable carrier for use in the treatment of skin conditions in mammals.
The skin conditions may be selected from the group consisting of fungal and bacterial infections; pimples and acne; ulcers of the mouth; sunburn; abrasions; chafing; chapping; itching; diaper rash; and eczema.
The composition may further be effective as a cosmetic composition for use in toning and revitalising the skin; reducing dark pigmentation and dark circles under the eyes; reducing wrinkles; reducing stretch marks; and in nourishing the skin.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided use of coal ash in a suitable dermatologically acceptable carrier in the manufacture of a composition for treating skin conditions in mammals.
The skin conditions may be selected from the group consisting of fungal and bacterial infections; pimples and acne; ulcers of the mouth; sunburn; abrasions; chafing; chapping; itching; diaper rash; and eczema.
The composition may further be effective as a cosmetic composition for use in toning and revitalising the skin; reducing dark pigmentation and dark circles
’ under the eyes; reducing wrinkles; reducing stretch marks; and in nourishing the skin.
The invention will now be described further by way of non-limiting examples.
EXAMPLES
