양극, 음극, 및 상기 음극과 양극 사이에 개재된 분리막을 포함하는 이차전지에 있어서, 상기 음극이 음극 집전체; 및 상기 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 형성되어 있는 음극 활물질층을 포함하고, 상기 음극 활물질층이 탄소계 활물질 및 Si계 활물질을 포함하고, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비와, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비에 따라서, 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하여 구동되는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지, 및 이의 구동방법이 제시된다.
Description
본 발명은 이차전지에 관한 것으로서, 구체적으로 에너지 밀도가 개선된 이차전지에 관한 것이다.
본 출원은 2019년 11월 12일에 출원된 한국출원 제10-2019-0144585호에 기초한 우선권을 주장하며, 해당 출원의 명세서에 개시된 모든 내용은 본 출원에 원용된다.
최근 전기자동차, 로봇, 전력저장 장치에 대한 시장이 급속하게 발전하여 높은 에너지 밀도, 안정성, 소량화, 경량화, 장수명을 가진 이차전지가 요구되고 있다. 이러한 대규모 분야에 대한 적용 여부에는, 현재 수준의 에너지 밀도보다 더 높은 무게당 또는 부피당 에너지 밀도의 이차전지 성능 확보에 달려 있다고 볼 수 있다.
현재 상용화되어 있는 리튬이온전지의 음극활물질인 흑연은 이론 용량이 372 mAh/g (약 160Wh/kg)으로 제한되어 있다. 차세대형 비수 전해질 이차전지의 음극 재료로서 이러한 흑연의 10배 이상의 용량(4200mAh/g)을 가지는 규소(Si)가 주목받고 있다. 또한, 흑연 등의 탄소계 재료를 대신할 신규 재료로서 리튬과 합금화하여 높은 이론 용량을 나타내는 규소 외에도 다양한 비탄소계 재료를 음극 활물질로 이용하는 것이 제안되고 있다.
하지만, 규소계 재료는 리튬과 합금화를 이루는 과정에서 높은 부피 팽창률로 인해 전극 내부와 표면의 크랙이 발생되고 활물질이 탈락되어 전기적 접촉성 저하로 이차전지의 사이클 용량이 급격하게 퇴화할 수 있다.
이러한 규소계 재료의 문제점을 해결하고자, 규소계 재료 등의 비탄소계 재료와 탄소계 재료를 혼합한 하이브리드형 음극을 적용하는 시도가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 하지만, 규소계 음극 활물질과 탄소계 흑연 활물질과 혼합하면 에너지 밀도는 개선할 수 있지만 이차전지의 성능이 열위되므로 여전히 문제가 된다.
이러한 규소계 재료의 문제점을 해결하면서, 이차전지의 에너지 밀도를 개선시키기 위한 개발이 여전히 요구되고 있다.
본 발명은 상기와 같은 문제점을 해결하기 위한 것으로, 본 발명의 한 목적은 사이클 특성이 개선된 이차전지, 및 이의 구동방법을 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 상기 과제를 해결하기 위하여, 하기 구현예가 제공된다.
제1 구현예에 따르면,
양극, 음극, 및 상기 음극과 양극 사이에 개재된 분리막을 포함하는 이차전지에 있어서,
상기 음극이 음극 집전체; 및 상기 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 형성되어 있는 음극 활물질층을 포함하고, 상기 음극 활물질층이 탄소계 활물질 및 Si계 활물질을 포함하고,
상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비와, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비에 따라서, 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하여 구동되는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지가 제공된다.
제2 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예에 있어서,
상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비와, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비를 가지고, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 활물질의 전체 용량 중에서 상기 Si계 활물질의 용량을 계산하고, 상기 계산된 Si계 활물질의 용량을 기준으로 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하고, 상기 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전을 할 수 있다.
제3 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 또는 제2 구현예에 있어서,
상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비가 x:100-x이고, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비가 a:1인 경우에,
상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 전체 용량 대비 Si계 활물질의 용량의 백분율(%)을 하기 식 1로 계산하고,

제6 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제5 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 탄소계 활물질이 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연, 소프트카본, 하드카본, 피치 탄화물, 소성된 코크스, 그라핀(Graphene), 탄소나노튜브, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함할 수 있다.
제7 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제6 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 Si계 활물질이 Si이고, 상기 탄소계 활물질이 인조흑연이고,
상기 Si 및 인조흑연의 혼합 중량비가 2:98이고, 상기 Si 및 인조흑연의 용량비가 8.9:1인 경우,
상기 Si 및 인조흑연의 음극활물질의 전체 용량 대비 Si 용량의 비율에 해당하는 값을 상기 식 1로 계산하여 그 계산값을 기준으로 상기 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하여서 이 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전을 할 수 있다.
제8 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예 내지 제7 구현예 중 어느 한 구현예에 있어서,
상기 계산값이 C(%)인 경우에, 상기 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 C-1 내지 C+1의 범위 내에서 정할 수 있다.
제9 구현예에 따르면,

제10 구현예에 따르면, 제9 구현예에 있어서,

본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 음극활물질로서 Si계(규소계) 활물질과 탄소계 활물질을 동시에 사용하면서, 이들 활물질의 혼합 중량비와 용량비에 따라서 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하여 이 설정된 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당하는 전압까지를 충방전 구동시 하한 전압으로 설정하는 방식으로 사용범위를 제한하면 사이클 특성을 크게 개선시킨 이차전지, 및 이의 구동방법을 제공할 수 있다.
도 1은 실시예 1과 비교예 1 내지 3의 이차전지의 사이클 회수에 따른 용량유지율을 평가한 결과를 나타낸 그래프이다.
이하, 본 명세서 및 청구범위에 사용된 용어나 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니 되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 발명을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면, 양극, 음극, 및 상기 음극과 양극 사이에 개재된 분리막을 포함하는 이차전지에 있어서,
상기 음극이 음극 집전체; 및 상기 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 형성되어 있는 음극 활물질층을 포함하고, 상기 음극 활물질층이 탄소계 활물질 및 Si계 활물질을 포함하고,
상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비와, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비에 따라서, 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하여 구동되는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지가 제공된다.
본 발명은 순수 Si, SiO, SiC, Si 합금 등의 Si계 음극 활물질을 탄소계 활물질과 혼합하여 이차전지의 음극의 음극활물질로 적용할 때, 이차전지의 성능을 개선하기 위해 이차전지의 사용 범위를 제한하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
즉, 상기 Si계 음극 활물질을 탄소계 활물질과 혼합하여 음극에 사용하게 되는 경우, 탄소계 활물질 보다 용량이 훨씬 더 큰 Si계 음극 활물질을 함께 사용하므로 에너지 밀도는 개선할 수 있지만, Si계 활물질의 자연적인 퇴화 및 부피 팽창에 의한 주위와 접촉 불량으로 전기적인 단락이 발생할 수 있으므로 이차전지의 성능의 성능이 열위되는 문제가 있다.
따라서, 상기 Si계 음극활물질을 탄소계 활물질에 혼합한 함량에 따라 이차전지의 사용범위를 제한하면, Si계 활물질의 사용을 제한시켜 Si계 활물질의 퇴화를 방지할 수 있으므로 이차전지의 성능은 유지하면서 이차전지의 에너지 밀도는 높일 수 있다.
상기 Si계 음극활물질을 탄소계 활물질에 혼합한 함량에 따라 이차전지의 사용범위를 제한한다는 의미는, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비와, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비를 가지고, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 활물질의 전체 용량 중에서 상기 Si계 활물질의 용량을 계산하고, 상기 계산된 Si계 활물질의 용량을 기준으로 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하고, 상기 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전을 하는 방식을 말한다.

또한 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 계산된 Si계 활물질의 용량의 백분율(%) 값, 즉 100ax/[(a-1)x+100](%)를 C(%)라고 할 때, 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 C-1 내지 C+1의 범위 내, 또는 C-0.5 내지 C+0.5의 범위 내에서 정할 수 있다. 이렇게 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 C-1 내지 C+1의 범위 내에서 정하는 이유는, C(%)를 계산할 때 용량비인 a 값의 적용시 매우 작은 값이지만 편차가 있을 수 있고, 계산값인 C(%)를 기준으로 -1 내지 +1, 또는 -0.5 내지 +0.5의 범위 내에서 하한 SOC를 설정하여 이차전지를 구동하는 경우에도 구현되는 용량 유지율에서 실질적으로 동등한 수준을 확인할 수 있기 때문이다.
예를 들어, Si계 활물질로 Si를 사용하고, 탄소계 활물질로 인조흑연을 사용하는 경우에, Si를 인조흑연에 2% 중량비(즉 Si 및 인조흑연의 중량비가 2:98)로 혼합한 경우 Si의 용량은 인조흑연 용량에 비해 약 8.9배 이상이므로 음극 전체에서 Si가 차지하는 용량비는 약 15.37% [= (2*8.9*100)/(7.9*2 + 100)]일 수 있다.
따라서, 이와 같이 음극활물질로 Si를 인조흑연에 2% 중량비(즉 Si 및 인조흑연의 중량비가 2:98)로 혼합하여 제조된 음극을 구비하는 이차전지는, 이 이차전지의 구동시에 하한 SOC를 음극활물질의 전체 용량 대비 Si 용량의 비율에 해당하는 15.37%를 기준으로 충방전시 하한 SOC를 설정하여서 이 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전을 하면 이차전지의 수명이 개선될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 음극활물질로 Si를 인조흑연에 2% 중량비(즉 Si 및 인조흑연의 중량비가 2:98)로 혼합하여 제조된 음극을 구비하는 이차전지는, 이 이차전지의 구동시에 하한 SOC를 음극활물질의 전체 용량 대비 Si 용량의 비율에 해당하는 15.37%를 기준으로 -1 내지 +1의 범위, 또는 -0.5 내지 +0.5의 범위인 "14.37% 내지 16.37%", 또는 "14.87% 내지 15.87%"의 범위 내에 해당되는 15%를 하한 SOC로 설정하여서 이 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전을 하면 이차전지의 수명이 개선될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, Si 및 인조흑연의 중량비가 3:97, 즉 Si가 3% 중량비로 혼합되었을 경우에는, Si의 용량은 음극 전체 용량의 약 23.05% [= (3*8.9*100)/(7.9*2 + 100)]이므로, 이러한 음극활물질을 채용한 음극을 구비한 이차전지는 구동시 하한 SOC의 23.05%를 기준으로 -1 내지 +1의 범위, 또는 -0.5 내지 +0.5의 범위인 "22.05% 내지 24.05%", 또는 "22.55 내지 23.55%"의 범위 내에 해당되는 23%를 하한 SOC로 설정하여서 이 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전을 하면 이차전지의 수명이 개선될 수 있다.
상기 집전체는 스테인리스스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성탄소, 구리; 카본, 니켈, 티탄 또는 은으로 표면처리된 스테인리스스틸; 알루미늄-카드뮴 합금; 도전재로 표면처리된 비전도성 고분자; 금속으로 표면처리된 비전도성 고분자; 및 전도성 고분자 중에서 선택되는 재질로 이루어질 수 있다.
또한, 상기 집전체는 3 ㎛ 내지 500 ㎛의 두께를 가질 수 있으나 이에 국한되지 않으며, 또한 상기 다공성 집전체의 크기 역시 특별한 제한 없이, 전극의 용도에 따라 적절하게 선택할 수 있다.
상기 탄소계 활물질은 전지의 충방전시 리튬이 삽입 및 탈리되는 탄소계 재료라면 특별히 제한되지 않는다.
상기 탄소계 활물질은 비정질 탄소, 결정질 탄소, 또는 비정질상 및 결정질상의 혼합물일 수 있다. 구체적으로, 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연, 소프트카본, 하드카본, 피치 탄화물, 소성된 코크스, 그라핀(Graphene), 탄소나노튜브, 또는 이들 중 2 이상의 혼합물을 포함할 수 있다. 특히, 흑연은 기존 이차전지에서 사용하던 음극재로서, 실리콘과 혼합하여 전극을 제조하여도 자신의 용량이 안정적으로 구현되고 초기 효율이 우수하며, 실리콘계 음극재의 낮은 초기 효율을 보상해 줄 수 있는 장점이 있다. 이로 인해 전극의 초기 효율을 높이는데 기여할 수 있으므로, 인조 흑연 또는 천연 흑연 등과 같은 흑연계 물질이 바람직하다.
상기 Si계 활물질은 Si를 포함하며 리튬과 합금화가 가능한 물질이라면 특별히 제한되지 않는다. 구체적으로, 상기 Si계 음극활물질은 Si, SiO
x(0<x<2), SiC, Si계 합금, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 음극은 음극 집전체 상에 전술한 탄소계 음극활물질 및 비탄소계 음극활물질을 포함하는 음극활물질, 도전재 및 바인더의 혼합물을 도포한 후 건조하여 제조할 수 있으며, 필요에 따라서는, 상기 혼합물에 충진재를 더 포함하기도 한다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 있어서 상기 집전체는 일반적으로 3 내지 500 ㎛의 두께로 만든다. 이러한 집전체는, 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 높은 도전성을 가지는 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 스테인리스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성 탄소, 또는 알루미늄이나 스테인리스 스틸의 표면에 카본, 니켈, 티탄, 은 등으로 표면처리한 것 등이 사용될 수 있다. 이 중 양극 또는 음극의 극성에 따라 적절하게 선택하여 사용될 수 있다.
상기 바인더는 활물질과 도전재 등의 결합과 집전체에 대한 결합에 조력하는 성분으로서, 통상적으로 전극 합재 전체 중량을 기준으로 1 내지 50 중량%로 첨가된다. 이러한 바인더로서 상기 고분자량 폴리아크릴로니트릴-아크릴산 공중합체를 이용할 수 있으나, 이것만으로 한정되는 것은 아니다. 다른 예로는, 폴리비닐리덴 플로라이드, 폴리비닐알콜, 카르복시메틸셀룰로우즈(CMC), 전분, 히드록시프로필셀룰로우즈, 재생 셀룰로우즈, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 에틸렌-프로필렌-디엔 테르 폴리머(EPDM), 술폰화 EPDM, 스티렌-부타디엔 고무(SBR), 폴리아크릴산, 알칼리 양이온 또는 암모늄이온으로 치환된 폴리아크릴산, 알칼리 양이온 또는 암모늄 이온으로 치환된 폴리(알킬렌-무수말레인산) 공중합체, 알칼리 양이온 또는 암모늄 이온으로 치환된 폴리(알킬렌-말레인산) 공중합체, 폴리에틸렌옥사이드, 불소 고무, 또는 이들 중 2종 이상을 사용할 수 있다. 보다 구체적으로, 상기 알칼리 양이온으로 치환된 폴리아크릴산으로는 리튬-폴리아크릴레이트(Li-PAA, 리튬이 치환된 폴리아크릴산) 등이 있고, 상기 알칼리 양이온으로 치환된 폴리(알킬렌-무수말레인산) 공중합체로는 리튬이 치환된 폴리이소부틸렌-무수말레인산 등이 있을 수 있다.
상기 도전재는 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않는 성분으로 예를 들면, 천연흑연이나 인조 흑연 등의 흑연; 카본 블랙, 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙(상품명), 카본 나노 튜브, 카본 나노 섬유, 채널 블랙, 퍼니스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서멀 블랙 등의 카본 블랙, 탄소 섬유나 금속 섬유 등의 도전성 섬유, 플로로카본, 알루미늄, 니켈 분말 등의 금속 분말; 산화아연, 티탄산 칼륨 등의 도전성 위스커, 산화티탄 등의 도전성 금속 산화물; 폴리페닐렌 유도체 등의 도전성 소재 등을 사용할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따르면, 상기 음극 집전체 상에 탄소계 음극활물질 및 비탄소계 음극활물질을 포함하는 음극활물질, 도전재 및 바인더의 혼합물을 도포하여 음극을 제조할 때, 건식 방법으로 음극 활물질, 도전재 및 바인더로 이루어진 고상 혼합물을 직접 도포하여 제조할 수도 있고, 습식 방법으로 음극 활물질, 도전재 및 바인더를 분산매에 첨가한 후 교반하여 슬러리 형태로 도포하고 분산매를 건조 등으로 제거하여 제조할 수도 있다. 이때, 습식 방법의 경우에 사용되는 분산매로는 물 (탈이온수 등)의 수계 매질을 사용할 수도 있고, 또는 N-메틸-피롤리돈(NMP, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone), 아세톤 등의 유기계 매질을 사용할 수도 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예 따른 이차전지는 음극과 양극, 및 상기 양극과 음극의 사이에 개재된 분리막을 포함하고, 상기 음극은 음극 집전체; 및 상기 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 형성되어 있는 음극 활물질층을 포함하고, 상기 음극 활물질층이 탄소계 활물질 및 Si계 활물질을 포함한다.

상기 분리막은 양극과 음극 사이에 개재되며, 높은 이온 투과도와 기계적 강도를 가지는 절연성의 얇은 박막이 사용된다. 분리막의 기공 직경은 일반적으로 0.01 ~ 10 ㎛이고, 두께는 일반적으로 5 ~ 300 ㎛이다. 이러한 분리막으로는, 예를 들어, 내화학성 및 소수성의 폴리프로필렌 등의 올레핀계 폴리머; 유리섬유 또는 폴리에틸렌 등으로 만들어진 필름, 시트나 부직포 등이 사용된다. 한편, 상기 분리막은 최외측 표면에 무기물 입자와 바인더 수지의 혼합물을 포함하는 다공층을 더 포함할 수 있다.

특히, 상기 카보네이트계 유기 용매 중 고리형 카보네이트인 에틸렌카보네이트 및 프로필렌카보네이트는 고점도의 유기 용매로서 유전율이 높아 전해질 내의 리튬염을 잘 해리시키므로 바람직하게 사용될 수 있으며, 이러한 고리형 카보네이트에 디메틸카보네이트 및 디에틸카보네이트와 같은 저점도, 저유전율 선형 카보네이트를 적당한 비율로 혼합하여 사용하면 높은 전기 전도율을 갖는 전해액을 만들 수 있어 더욱 바람직하게 사용될 수 있다.
선택적으로, 본 발명에 따라 저장되는 전해질은 통상의 전해액에 포함되는 과충전 방지제 등과 같은 첨가제를 더 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 이차전지는 그 외형 또는 케이스에 제한이 없으나, 캔을 사용한 원통형, 각형, 파우치(pouch)형 또는 코인(coin)형 등이 될 수 있다. 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 이차전지는 파우치형 이차전지일 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 이차전지는 리튬 이차전지일 수 있고, 상기 리튬 이차전지는 리튬금속 이차전지, 리튬이온 이차전지, 리튬폴리머 이차전지 또는 리튬이온폴리머 이차전지 등, 통상적인 리튬 이차전지들을 모두 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에 따른 전지는 스택형, 권취형, 스택 앤 폴딩형 또는 케이블형일 수 있고, 또한 소형 디바이스의 전원으로 사용되는 전지셀에 사용될 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 다수의 전지셀들을 포함하는 중대형 전지모듈에 단위전지로도 바람직하게 사용될 수 있다. 상기 중대형 디바이스의 바람직한 예로는 전기자동차, 하이브리드 전기자동차, 플러그-인 하이브리드 전기자동차, 전력 저장용 시스템 등을 들 수 있으며, 특히 고출력이 요구되는 영역인 하이브리드 전기자동차 및 신재생 에너지 저장용 배터리 등에 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면,

전술한 바와 같이, 이렇게 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 C-1 내지 C+1의 범위 내에서 정하는 이유는, C(%)를 계산할 때 용량비인 a 값의 적용시 매우 작은 값이지만 편차가 있을 수 있고, 계산값인 C(%)를 기준으로 -1 내지 +1, 또는 -0.5 내지 +0.5의 범위 내에서 하한 SOC를 설정하여 이차전지를 구동하는 경우에도 구현되는 용량 유지율에서 실질적으로 동등한 수준을 확인할 수 있기 때문이다.
이하, 본 발명의 이해를 돕기 위하여 실시예를 들어 상세하게 설명하기로 한다. 그러나, 본 발명에 따른 실시예들은 여러 가지 다른 형태로 변형될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 범위가 하기 실시예에 한정되는 것으로 해석되어서는 안 된다. 본 발명의 실시예들은 당업계에서 평균적인 지식을 가진 자에게 본 발명을 보다 완전하게 설명하기 위해 제공되는 것이다.
실시예 1
탄소계 활물질로 인조 흑연과 Si계 활물질로 Si의 혼합 음극활물질, 바인더 고분자(SBR(스티렌-부타디엔 러버) 및 CMC(카르복시메틸셀룰로오스)), 도전재로 카본블랙를 중량비 95:3.5:1.5로 혼합한 혼합물과, 분산매로 물을 사용하여 혼합물과 분산매의 중량비를 1:2로 혼합하여 활물질층용 슬러리를 준비하였다. 이때, 상기 인조흑연 및 Si의 혼합 음극활물질 전체 중량 대비 Si의 중량이 2 중량%였고, SBR(스티렌-부타디엔 러버) 및 CMC(카르복시메틸셀룰로오스)의 중량비는 2.3:1.2이였다.
슬롯 다이를 이용하여, 두께가 10㎛의 음극 집전체인 구리(Cu) 박막의 일면에 상기 활물질층용 슬러리를 코팅하고, 130℃ 진공하에서 1시간 동안 건조하여, 구리 박막 상에 활물질층을 형성하였다.
이렇게 형성된 활물질층을 롤 프레싱(roll pressing) 방식으로 압연하여, 80㎛ 두께의 단일층 구조의 활물질층을 구비한 음극을 제조하였다. 음극활물질층의 건조 중량기준으로 로딩양은 17 mg/cm
2이었다.
<양극의 제조>
양극활물질로서 Li(Ni
0.8Mn
0.1Co
0.1)O
2(NCM-811), 도전재로 카본블랙(carbon black) 및 바인더로 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드(PVdF)를 96:2:2의 중량비로 용매인 N-메틸피롤리돈(NMP)에 첨가하여, 양극활물질 슬러리를 준비하였다. 상기 슬러리를 두께 15㎛의 알루미늄 집전체의 일면에 코팅하고, 상기 음극과 동일한 조건으로 건조 및 압연을 수행하여 양극을 제조하였다. 이때, 양극활물질층의 건조 중량기준으로 로딩양은 20 mg/cm
2이었다.
<리튬 이차전지의 제조>
에틸렌 카보네이트(EC), 프로필렌카보네이트(PC) 및 에틸메틸 카보네이트(EMC)를 3:1:6 (부피비)의 조성으로 혼합된 유기 용매에 LiPF
6를 1.0M의 농도가 되도록 용해시켜 비수성 전해액을 제조하였다.
상기에서 제조된 양극과 음극 사이에 폴리올레핀 세퍼레이터를 개재시킨 후, 상기 전해액을 주입하여 리튬 이차전지를 제조하였다.
<리튬 이차전지의 구동>
상기 제조된 리튬 이차전지를 상온(25℃)에서 C/3의 전류값으로 최초 충전 및 방전을 진행하였고, 이때 작동 전압 범위는 SOC 100%에서 0%까지 기준으로 4.2V에서 2.5V였다.
이후, 충전 및 방전시 음극활물질의 전체 용량 중 Si의 용량 백분율에 해당하는 값을 계산하고, 이 해당되는 값을 하한 SOC로 제한하고, 그 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당하는 하한 전압까지만 방전을 진행하고, 충전은 동일하게 4.2V까지 진행하였다.
실시예 1에서 상기 인조흑연 및 Si의 혼합 음극활물질 전체 중량 대비 Si의 중량이 2 중량%이고, Si의 용량은 인조흑연 용량의 8.9배로 하면, Si가 차지하는 용량비의 계산값은 15.37%가 되었다. 이때, 하한 SOC를 계산값인 15.37%의 -1 내지 +1의 범위에 해당하는 15%로 제한하고, 하한 SOC인 15%의 용량에 해당하는 하한 전압까지만 방전을 하고, 충전은 상한 SOC로 100%의 용량에 해당하는 전압 4.2V까지 진행하는 방식으로 충방전을 300 사이클 실시하였다. 충방전 300 사이클 동안 용량 유지율 변화를 도 1에 나타내었다.
<비교예 1>
실시예 1과 동일하게 리튬이차전지를 제조하되, 하한 SOC를 0%로 임의로 설정하여 0% 용량에 해당하는 하한 전압(2.5V)까지만 방전을 하고, 충전은 상한 SOC로 100%의 용량에 해당하는 전압 4.2V까지 진행하는 방식으로 충방전을 300 사이클 실시하였다. 충방전 300 사이클 동안 용량 유지율 변화를 도 1에 나타내었다.
<비교예 2>
실시예 1과 동일하게 리튬이차전지를 제조하되, 하한 SOC를 5%로 임의로 설정하여 5% 용량에 해당하는 하한 전압까지만 방전을 하고, 충전은 상한 SOC로 100%의 용량에 해당하는 전압 4.2V까지 진행하는 방식으로 충방전을 300 사이클 실시하였다. 충방전 300 사이클 동안 용량 유지율 변화를 도 1에 나타내었다.
<비교예 3>
실시예 1과 동일하게 리튬이차전지를 제조하되, 하한 SOC를 10%로 임의로 설정하여 10% 용량에 해당하는 하한 전압까지만 방전을 하고, 충전은 상한 SOC로 100%의 용량에 해당하는 전압 4.2V까지 진행하는 방식으로 충방전을 300 사이클 실시하였다. 충방전 300 사이클 동안 용량 유지율 변화를 도 1에 나타내었다.
도 1을 참조하면, 실시예 1은 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비와, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비에 따라서, 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 계산하여 상기 계산된 하한 SOC의 -1 내지 +1의 범위에 포함되는 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전하고, 충전은 상한 SOC 100%의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지 충전하는 방식으로 진행한 결과, 300 사이클 후에도 약 93%를 상회하는 우수한 사이클 수명 특성을 나타내었다.
반면에, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비와, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비에 따라서 하한 SOC를 설정하는 실시예 1과는 완전히 상이하게, 하한 SOC를 0%, 5%, 및 10%로 임의로 정하고, 이 정해진 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지 방전하는 방식으로 구동한 비교예 1 내지 3의 이차전지는 300 사이클 후에 약 70 내지 80% 대의 매우 낮은 사이클 수명 특성을 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
Claims (12)
- 양극, 음극, 및 상기 음극과 양극 사이에 개재된 분리막을 포함하는 이차전지에 있어서,상기 음극이 음극 집전체; 및 상기 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 형성되어 있는 음극 활물질층을 포함하고, 상기 음극 활물질층이 탄소계 활물질 및 Si계 활물질을 포함하고,상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비와, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비에 따라서, 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하여 구동되는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비와, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비를 가지고, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 활물질의 전체 용량 중에서 상기 Si계 활물질의 용량을 계산하고, 상기 계산된 Si계 활물질의 용량을 기준으로 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하고, 상기 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전을 하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지.
- 제2항에 있어서,상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비가 x:100-x이고, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비가 a:1인 경우에,상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 전체 용량 대비 Si계 활물질의 용량의 백분율(%)을 하기 식 1로 계산하고,상기 계산된 Si계 활물질의 용량의 백분율(%) 값을 기준으로 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하고, 상기 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전을 하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지:[식 1]Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 전체 용량 대비 Si계 활물질의 용량의 백분율(%) = [ax / [ax + (100-x)]] x 100 = 100ax/[(a-1)x+100] (%)
- 제2항에 있어서,상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비가 x:100-x이고, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비가 a:1인 경우에,상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 전체 용량 대비 Si계 활물질의 용량의 백분율(%)을 하기 식 1로 계산하고,상기 계산된 Si계 활물질의 용량의 백분율(%) 값을 C(%)라고 할 때, 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 C-1 내지 C+1의 범위 내에서 정하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지:[식 1]Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 전체 용량 대비 Si계 활물질의 용량의 백분율(%) = [ax / [ax + (100-x)]] x 100 = 100ax/[(a-1)x+100] (%)
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 Si계 활물질이 Si, SiOx(0<x<2), SiC, Si계 합금, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 탄소계 활물질이 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연, 소프트카본, 하드카본, 피치 탄화물, 소성된 코크스, 그라핀(Graphene), 탄소나노튜브, 또는 이들 중 2 이상을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지.
- 제3항에 있어서,상기 Si계 활물질이 Si이고, 상기 탄소계 활물질이 인조흑연이고,상기 Si 및 인조흑연의 혼합 중량비가 2:98이고, 상기 Si 및 인조흑연의 용량비가 8.9:1인 경우,상기 Si 및 인조흑연의 음극활물질의 전체 용량 대비 Si 용량의 비율에 해당하는 값을 상기 식 1로 계산하여 그 계산값을 기준으로 상기 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하여서 이 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전을 하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지.
- 제7항에 있어서,상기 계산값이 C(%)인 경우에, 상기 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 C-1 내지 C+1의 범위 내에서 정하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지.
- 양극, 음극, 및 상기 음극과 양극 사이에 개재된 분리막을 포함하고, 상기 음극이 음극 집전체; 및 상기 음극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 형성되어 있는 음극 활물질층을 포함하고, 상기 음극 활물질층이 탄소계 활물질 및 Si계 활물질을 포함하는 이차전지의 구동방법에 있어서,상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비와, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비에 따라서, 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하여 구동하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 구동방법.
- 제9항에 있어서,상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비와, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비를 가지고, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 활물질의 전체 용량 중에서 상기 Si계 활물질의 용량을 계산하고, 상기 계산된 Si계 활물질의 용량을 기준으로 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하고, 상기 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전을 하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 구동방법.
- 제10항에 있어서,상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 혼합 중량비가 x:100-x이고, 상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 용량비가 a:1인 경우에,상기 Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 전체 용량 대비 Si계 활물질의 용량의 백분율(%)을 하기 식 1로 계산하고,상기 계산된 Si계 활물질의 용량의 백분율(%) 값을 기준으로 이차전지의 구동시 하한 SOC를 설정하고, 상기 하한 SOC의 용량에 해당되는 전압까지만 방전을 하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 구동방법:[식 1]Si계 활물질 및 탄소계 활물질의 전체 용량 대비 Si계 활물질의 용량의 백분율(%) = [ax / [ax + (100-x)]] x 100 = 100ax/[(a-1)x+100] (%)
