Description
The present invention relates to a dry shampoo composition, particularly, relates to an aqueous-based non-aerosol dry shampoo composition.
In the field of hair cleansing, dry shampoos have existed for many years, either in a powdery form or in aerosol form. Dry shampoos can be employed with no water and they can remove contamination from the hair quickly. Generally, dry shampoos contain carrier material, due to its adsorption properties, when the hair is combed or brushed after the dry shampoo has been applied, the adsorbed impurities are removed from the hair along with the carrier materials.
Starches or modified starches are primarily used as carrier materials in dry shampoos. However, in practice, the proposed dry shampoos are not completely satisfactory. Their styling properties, such as the provision of volume to the head of hair, are normally limited and they often leave white residues on the hair. To improve such properties, the patent KR20130114986 disclosed a dry shampoo composition consisting of silicone elastomer powder in replace of starch as contamination-removing powder to solve such problems. This is a formula without water. US2015/0139917A1 disclosed that a dry shampoo composition consisting of silicone elastomer powder may contain water, but it would less than 5%by weight of water relative to total weight of the composition, and it was preferentially said to be anhydrous.
Dry shampoos currently on the market can have various disadvantages. They only partially meet consumer’s need. Most of them are targeted in aerosol format or no silicone elastomer powder. Some may have unsatisfactory capacity to absorb oil or give rise to unsightly white residues in the hair. Further still, the aerosol spray containing propellant is a conventional packaging form for most of dry shampoos on the market. However, the propellant is usually alkanes and liquid alkanes which are not only have low toxicity but also insecure and not sustainable.
Therefore, there is thus a need to develop an aqueous formulation which not only can achieve both excellent cleansing function and caring property, but also is safe and sustainable without using propellant.

The present invention is to provide an aqueous-based non-aerosol dry shampoo composition having one or more properties of excellent oil absorbing effect, safe and sustainable, long-lasting perfume, quickly dry characteristic, hair conditioning and smoothness, and leaving less residue than conventional products, preferably having all the above properties.
After intensive studies, the inventors have found that an aqueous-based non-aerosol dry shampoo comprising: (A) 0.1 to 30wt %of silicone elastomer powder; and (B) 5 to 98.3wt%of water can solve above problems.
In the present invention, the silicone elastomer powder (A) is dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer modified with hydrophilic agents.
In the present invention, the hydrophilic agents are one or more alcohols, preferably selected from 1, 3-butaneddiol, 1, 2-propanediol, 1, 3-propanediol, glycerin, 1, 10-decanediol, 1, 2-butanediol, 1, 2-hexanediol, pentylene glycol, propanediol, 1, 4-butanediol 1, 5-pentanediol, hexanediol, 2, 3-butanediol, 3-hexenol and other kinds of alcohols allowed to be used in cosmetics.
In the present invention, the composition further comprises (C) alcohol, (D) humectant, (E) fragrance oil and (F) preservative.
The advantages of the aqueous-based non-aerosol dry shampoo composition include that:
- It is featured with non-aerosol format by selecting silicone elastomer powder as its main component, which offers an oil absorbing characteristic, and then delivers smoothness on hair, and contributes to hair dry combing performance. Additionally, the special skeleton structure of silicone elastomer powder has proven to bring long-lasting perfume property to the dry shampoo composition described herein.
- Compared to traditional formats, it contains a large proportion of water to moisturize hair, furthermore it also makes the format simple and plain to reduce the manufacturing cost.
- No propellant is comprised in the format without derogating its spray uniformity, which also renders safety, stability and sustainability to the composition. Therefore, it can be easily carried with and can be brought to the flight.
- It can be processed to prepare the formulation at the room temperature.
- Alcohol further offers quickly dry characteristic to the composition.

Comparative composition EX’ is a typical commercial dry shampoo consisting of starch, oryza sativa, butane, propane, isobutane, pentane, dimethylsilyl alkylate silica, fragrance oil, alcohol and water, which was purchased from Henkel under the trade name of
The oil absorption effect and other properties of the above compositions of the present invention were studied by the following tests.
Test Methods:
Test on Hair Strands
The effect of oil-absorbing as well as other performance properties such as greasy feeling, cleaning feeling, dry speed, dry hair feeling after applications, hair gloss, smoothness, residue etc. were tested by spraying the compositions of this present invention (Table 1) and the comparative composition onto the greasy hair strands treated by sebum. Table 2 shows the average score of three people’s assessment result on each performance indicator for composition EX’ , EX1~EX6 follows by the rule as below:
- 6: Very good
- 5: Good
- 4: Slightly good
- 3: Slightly bad
- 2: Bad
- 1: Very bad.
It can be easily understood that the oil absorption property improves as an increase of the amount of silicone elastomer powder. However, an excess of silicone elastomer powder results in much more residue on the hair than it is normal used to be. After intensive studies, the inventors have found that the oil absorption property remains to be steady with 30wt%of silicone elastomer powder.
It can be seen from Fig. 1, Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 that after applying to composition EX5 of this invention, the hair strands appear to be less oily, much cleaner and smoother than that before. Using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) imaging taken on (1) hair without any treatment (Fig. 4) , (2) the greasy hair (Fig. 5) , (3) hair treated by the most preferable composition EX5 of this invention (Fig. 6) , and (4) hair treated by comparative composition (Fig. 7) as a result of the comparison. It can be found that composition of this invention absorbed most of sebum on hair, and less residue were left on hair than that treated by the comparative composition.
Performance Blind Test on Real Head
Composition EX5 was tested by a panel of testers who assessed them on performance indicators such as dry speed, dry hair feeling after applications, greasy feeling, cleaning feeling, hair gloss, smoothness, residue etc. Each tester with oily scalp were conducted a so-called “half head and blind test” , meaning tester’s half head was applied by dry shampoo composition EX5 of this invention and the other half head was applied by the comparative composition. The shampoo application amount was 2g, 3g and 4g for short hair, medium hair and long hair respectively. A brief description of the selected testers’ hair condition was presented in Table 3. The testing result was recorded in the Table 4. Each tester scored for every performance indicator by rules as below:
- 6: Very good
- 5: Good
- 4: Slightly good
- 3: Slightly bad
- 2: Bad
- 1: Very bad.
As can be seen from Table 4, the dry shampoo of the present invention (EX5) shows better dry hair feeling after application, cleaner feeling when looking, cleaner touching when touching, better scalp feeling, less residue and more smoothness compared with the comparative composition.
Fragrance Oil’s Olfactive Test
The scent lasting time of composition EX4 containing 0.3wt%fragrance oil was tested through an olfactive test conducted by professional perfumer from
Specifically, hair strands were sprayed for 2 seconds with the respective composition (EX4) and controlling composition respectively, and then perfumers evaluated and recorded the Olfactive Strength Scale at different time point based on the standard defined as below:
- 1: Very week;
- 2: Week;
- 3: Neither week nor strong;
- 4: Strong;
- 5: Very strong.
It shows good performance in both leave on base, especially in the sample of composition of this invention. The full character is very preformistic and well accepted, and the perfume can even last till 48hr.
Although some preferred embodiments have been described, many modifications and variations may be made thereto considering the above teachings. It is therefore to be understood that the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
