기술분야
본 발명은 전극 및 전극 조립체에 관한 것으로서, 보다 상세하게는 내부 단락, 외부 단락, 과충전, 과방전 등 비정상적인 작동 시 난연제의 흡열 반응을 통해 초기 발열을 억제하여 안전성을 확보할 수 있는 전극 및 전극 조립체에 관한 것이다.
일반적으로, 이차 전지의 종류로는 니켈 카드뮴 전지, 니켈 수소 전지, 리튬 이온 전지 및 리튬 이온 폴리머 전지 등이 있다. 이러한 이차 전지는 디지털 카메라, P-DVD, MP3P, 휴대폰, PDA, Portable Game Device, Power Tool 및 E-bike 등의 소형 제품뿐만 아니라, 전기 자동차나 하이브리드 자동차와 같은 고출력이 요구되는 대형 제품과 잉여 발전 전력이나 신재생 에너지를 저장하는 전력 저장 장치와 백업용 전력 저장 장치에도 적용되어 사용되고 있다.
전극 조립체를 제조하기 위해, 양극(Cathode), 분리막(Separator) 및 음극(Anode)을 제조하고, 이들을 적층한다. 구체적으로, 양극 활물질 슬러리를 양극 집전체에 도포하고, 음극 활물질 슬러리를 음극 집전체에 도포하여 양극(Cathode)과 음극(Anode)을 제조한다. 그리고 상기 제조된 양극 및 음극의 사이에 분리막(Separator)이 개재되어 적층되면 단위 셀(Unit Cell)들이 형성되고, 단위 셀들이 서로 적층됨으로써, 전극 조립체가 형성된다. 그리고 이러한 전극 조립체가 특정 케이스에 수용되고 전해액을 주입하면 이차 전지가 제조된다.
그러나, 종래에는 이차 전지가 고온에 노출되거나 내부/외부 단락, 과충전 또는 과방전되는 등 비정상적으로 작동되는 경우, 발열에 의해 분리막이 수축하면서 양극과 음극이 서로 직접 접촉하여 단락(쇼트, Short)이 발생할 가능성이 높아진다. 또한, 전지 생산 시 불량으로 인해 양극과 음극이 닿아 단락이 발생할 수도 있다. 이러한 단락으로 인해 전지 내부에 급격한 전자 이동이 발생하고, 그럼으로써 발열과 부반응이 발생하면 이차 전지가 폭발하여 안전성에 문제가 발생할 수 있었다. 특히, 과충전, 과방전, 외부 단락 등 전기적인 오작동 발생 시, 높은 전류가 흐르고 집전체의 열전도율이 낮기 때문에 집전체의 온도가 활물질 층보다 높은 열이 발생된다. 이후 열이 확산되어 활물질, 전해액 등 구성요소의 열적, 화학적, 전기화학적 반응이 더해져 열폭주까지 이어질 수 있었다.
본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 과제는, 전지 제조 시 발생할 수 있는 양극과 음극의 단락 또는 내부 단락, 외부 단락, 과충전, 과방전 등 비정상적인 작동 시 양극과 음극의 접촉되는 단락을 방지함과 동시에 난연제의 흡열 반응을 통해 초기 발열을 억제하여 안전성을 확보할 수 있는 전극 및 전극 조립체를 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 과제들은 이상에서 언급한 과제로 제한되지 않으며, 언급되지 않은 또 다른 과제들은 아래의 기재로부터 당업자에게 명확하게 이해될 수 있을 것이다.
상기 과제를 해결하기 위한 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 전극은 전극 집전체의 적어도 하나의 면에 전극 활물질이 도포된 활물질 도포부; 상기 활물질 도포부의 일측에 형성되며, 상기 전극 활물질이 미도포된 활물질 미도포부; 및 상기 활물질 도포부와 상기 활물질 미도포부 사이에 코팅되며 난연제가 포함되는 코팅부를 포함한다.

충진제는 양극(101)의 팽창을 억제하는 성분으로서 선택적으로 사용된다. 그리고 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않고 섬유상 재료라면 일반적으로 충진제로 사용될 수 있다. 충진제는 예를 들어, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌 등의 올리핀계 중합체; 유리섬유, 탄소섬유 등의 섬유상 물질일 수 있다.
음극(102)은 예를 들어, 음극 집전체(1021) 상에 음극 활물질(1022)을 도포한 다음에 이를 건조하고 프레싱하여 제조될 수 있다. 필요에 따라 음극 활물질(1022)에 선택적으로 도전제, 바인더, 충진제 등을 포함시킬 수 있다. 음극(102)은 시트 형상으로 제조되어 롤에 장착될 수도 있다.
음극 집전체(1021)는 일반적으로 3 ~ 500 μm의 두께로 제조된다. 음극 집전체(1021)는 통상 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않고 도전성을 가지는 재료로 제조된다. 이와 같은 재료로 가장 대표적인 것인 구리, 스테인리스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성 탄소나, 구리 또는 스테인리스 스틸의 표면에 카본, 니켈, 티탄, 은 등을 표면 처리한 것, 또는 알루미늄-카드뮴 합금 등이다. 또한 음극 집전체(1021)는 음극 활물질(1022)의 결합력을 높이기 위해 표면에 미세한 요철을 형성하기도 한다. 또한 음극 집전체(1021)는 필름, 시트, 호일, 네트, 다공질체, 발포체, 부직포체 등 다양한 형태로 제조될 수 있다.
음극 활물질(1022)은 예를 들어, 난흑연화 탄소, 흑연계 탄소 등의 탄소; LixFe2O3(0=x=1), LixWO2(0=x=1), SnxMe1-xMe'yOz (Me: Mn, Fe, Pb, Ge; Me': Al, B, P, Si, 주기율표의 1족, 2족, 3족 원소, 할로겐;0<x=1; 1=y=3; 1=z=8) 등의 금속 복합 산화물; 리튬 금속; 리튬 합금; 규소계 합금; Li4Ti5O12 등 티타늄계 화합물; 주석계 합금; MnOx, FeOx, CoOx, NiOx, CuOx, SnO, SnO2, PbO, PbO2, Pb2O3, Pb3O4, Sb2O3, Sb2O4, Sb2O5, GeO, GeO2, Bi2O3, Bi2O4, and Bi2O5 등의 금속 산화물; 폴리아세틸렌 등의 도전성 고분자; Li-Co-Ni계 재료 등일 수 있다.
상기 양극(101)과 음극(102) 사이에서 상기 전극(101, 102)들을 절연시키는 분리막으로는 통상 알려진 폴리올레핀계 분리막이나, 상기 올레핀계 기재에 유, 무기 복합층이 형성된 복합 분리막 등을 모두 사용할 수 있으며, 특별히 한정되지 않는다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따르면, 상기와 같은 구조로 이루어진 전극 조립체(10)를 전지 케이스(13)에 수납한 다음, 전해액을 주입하여 이차 전지(1)를 제조한다.
도 2는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 파우치 형 이차 전지(1)의 조립도이다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 파우치 형 이차 전지(1)는 상기 전극 조립체(10) 뿐만 아니라, 상기 양극(101) 및 음극(102)으로부터 각각 일측으로 돌출 형성된 복수의 전극 탭(11); 상기 전극 탭(11)에 각각 연결되어, 상기 전극 조립체(10)의 내부에서 생성된 전기를 외부로 전달하는 복수의 전극 리드(12); 상기 전극 조립체(10)를 내부에 수납하는 전지 케이스(13); 및 상기 전극 리드(12)의 주위를 포위하고, 상기 전지 케이스(13)와 함께 실링되며, 난연제가 포함되는 절연부(14)를 더 포함할 수 있다.
이러한 이차 전지(1)를 제조하는 과정은, 상기 기술한 바와 같이, 전극 조립체(10)를 형성한 다음에, 전극 조립체(10)를 전지 케이스(13)에 삽입하고 전해액 주입 후 실링한다.
전극 조립체(Electrode Assembly, 10)는 도 1에 도시된 바와 같이, 전극 탭(Electrode Tab, 11)을 포함한다. 전극 탭(11)은 전극 조립체(10)의 양극(101) 및 음극(102)과 각각 연결되고, 전극 조립체(10)의 외부로 돌출되어, 전극 조립체(10)의 내부와 외부 사이에 전자가 이동할 수 있는 경로가 된다. 전극 조립체(10)의 전극 집전체(1011, 1021)는 전극 활물질(1012, 1022)이 도포된 활물질 도포부(1013, 1023)와 전극 활물질(1012, 1022)이 도포되지 않은 활물질 미도포부(1014, 1024), 즉 무지부로 구성된다. 그리고 전극 탭(11)은 활물질 미도포부(1014, 1024)를 재단하여 형성되거나 활물질 미도포부(1014, 1024)에 별도의 도전부재를 초음파 용접 등으로 연결하여 형성될 수도 있다. 이러한 전극 탭(11)은 도 2에 도시된 바와 같이, 전극 조립체(10)의 일측으로부터 동일한 방향으로 나란히 돌출될 수도 있으나, 이에 제한되지 않고 각각 다른 방향으로 돌출될 수도 있다.
전극 조립체(10)의 전극 탭(11)에는 전극 리드(Electrode Lead, 12)가 스팟(Spot) 용접 등으로 연결된다. 그리고, 전극 리드(12)의 일부는 절연부(14)로 주위가 포위된다. 절연부(14)는 전지 케이스(13)의 상부 케이스(131)와 하부 케이스(132)가 열융착되는 실링부(134)에 한정되어 위치하여, 전극 리드(12)를 전지 케이스(13)에 접착시킨다. 그리고, 전극 조립체(10)로부터 생성되는 전기가 전극 리드(12)를 통해 전지 케이스(13)로 흐르는 것을 방지하며, 전지 케이스(13)의 실링을 유지한다. 따라서, 이러한 절연부(14)는 전기가 잘 통하지 않는 비전도성을 가진 부도체로 제조된다. 일반적으로 절연부(14)로는, 전극 리드(12)에 부착하기 용이하고, 두께가 비교적 얇은 절연테이프를 많이 사용하나, 이에 제한되지 않고 전극 리드(12)를 절연할 수 있다면 다양한 부재를 사용할 수 있다.
나아가, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 절연부(14)에는 난연제가 더 포함될 수 있다. 그럼으로써 외부의 화재나 불꽃, 스파크 등과 같은 발화원인으로부터 셀을 보호함으로써 이차 전지(1)의 내열 안정성을 향상시킬 수 있다. 이러한 난연제는 연소 반응을 저해하는 물질로, 할로겐계 난연제, 인계 난연제 또는 무기화합물 난연제 등 다양한 난연제를 포함할 수 있다. 난연제에 대한 자세한 설명은 후술한다.
전극 리드(12)는 양극 탭(111) 및 음극 탭(112)의 형성 위치에 따라 서로 동일한 방향으로 연장될 수도 있고 서로 반대 방향으로 연장될 수도 있다. 양극 리드(121) 및 음극 리드(122)는 서로 그 재질이 다를 수 있다. 즉, 양극 리드(121)는 양극 집전체(1011)와 동일한 알루미늄(Al) 재질이며, 음극 리드(122)는 음극 집전체(1021)와 동일한 구리(Cu) 재질, 니켈(Ni) 재질 또는 니켈(Ni)이 코팅된 구리(Cu) 재질일 수 있다. 그리고 전지 케이스(13)의 외부로 돌출된 전극 리드(12)의 일부분은 단자부가 되어, 외부 단자와 전기적으로 연결된다.
본 발명의 실시예들에 따른 파우치 형 이차 전지(1)에서 전지 케이스(13)는 연성의 재질로 제조된 파우치이다. 이하, 전지 케이스(13)는 파우치인 것으로 설명한다. 전지 케이스(13)는 전극 리드(12)의 일부, 즉 단자부가 노출되도록 전극 조립체(10)를 수용하고 실링된다. 이러한 전지 케이스(13)는 도 2에 도시된 바와 같이, 상부 케이스(131)와 하부 케이스(132)를 포함한다. 하부 케이스(132)에는 전극 조립체(10)를 수용할 수 있는 수용 공간(1331)이 마련된 컵부(133)가 형성되고, 상부 케이스(131)는 상기 전극 조립체(10)가 전지 케이스(13)의 외부로 이탈되지 않도록 상기 수용 공간(1331)을 상부에서 커버한다. 이 때, 도 2에 도시된 바와 같이 상부 케이스(131)에도 수용 공간(1331)이 마련된 컵부(133)가 형성되어, 전극 조립체(10)를 상부에서 수용할 수도 있다. 상부 케이스(131)와 하부 케이스(132)는 도 2에 도시된 바와 같이 일측이 서로 연결되어 제조될 수 있으나, 이에 제한되지 않고 서로 분리되어 별도로 제조되는 등 다양하게 제조될 수 있다.
전극 조립체(10)의 전극 탭(11)에 전극 리드(12)가 연결되고, 전극 리드(12)의 일부분에 절연부(14)가 형성되면, 하부 케이스(132)에 마련된 수용 공간(1331)에 전극 조립체(10)가 수용되고, 상부 케이스(131)가 상기 수용 공간(1331)을 상부에서 커버한다. 그리고, 내부에 전해액을 주입하고 상부 케이스(131)와 하부 케이스(132)의 테두리에 형성된 실링부(134)가 실링되면, 이차 전지(1)가 제조된다.
도 3은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 양극(101)의 평면도이고, 도 4는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 양극(101)의 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)와 양극 활물질 미도포부(1014)의 일부 확대도이다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따르면, 전극(101, 102)의 활물질 도포부(1013, 1023)와 활물질 미도포부(1014, 1024) 사이에, 난연제를 포함하는 코팅부가 코팅되므로, 양극(101)과 음극(102)이 직접 접촉하더라도 초기 발열을 억제하여 안전성을 확보할 수 있다.
이에 따라, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 전극(101, 102)은, 전극 집전체(1011, 1021)의 적어도 하나의 면에 전극 활물질(1012, 1022)이 도포된 활물질 도포부(1013, 1023); 상기 활물질 도포부(1013, 1023)의 일측에 형성되며, 상기 전극 활물질(1012, 1022)이 미도포된 활물질 미도포부(1014, 1024); 및 상기 활물질 도포부(1013, 1023)와 상기 활물질 미도포부(1014, 1024) 사이에 코팅되며 난연제가 포함되는 코팅부를 포함한다.
그리고 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 전극 조립체(10)는 양극 집전체(1011)의 적어도 하나의 면에 양극 활물질(1012)이 도포된 양극 활물질 도포부(1013), 상기 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)의 일측에 형성되며 상기 양극 활물질(1012)이 미도포된 양극 활물질 미도포부(1014) 및 상기 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)와 상기 양극 활물질 미도포부(1014) 사이에 코팅되며 난연제가 포함되는 양극 코팅부(1015)를 포함하는 양극(101); 음극 집전체(1021)의 적어도 하나의 면에 음극 활물질(1022)이 도포된 음극 활물질 도포부(1023), 및 상기 음극 활물질 도포부(1023)의 일측에 형성되며, 상기 음극 활물질(1022)이 미도포된 음극 활물질 미도포부(1024)를 포함하는 음극(102); 및 상기 양극(101) 및 상기 음극(102) 사이에 개재되는 분리막을 포함한다.
전극 조립체(10)에 포함되는 복수의 전극(101, 102) 중 양극(101)에서, 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)는 양극 집전체(1011)의 적어도 하나의 면에 양극 활물질(1012)이 도포된 부분이다. 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)는 도 3에 도시된 바와 같이, 양극 집전체(1011)에서 양극 활물질(1012)이 도포된 부분이며, 이 때 상기 기술한 바와 같이, 양극 활물질(1012)에 도전제 및 바인더가 혼합될 수 있다.
양극 활물질 미도포부(1014)는 양극(101)에서 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)의 일측에 형성되며 양극 활물질(1012)이 미도포된 부분이다. 상기 기술한 바와 같이, 이러한 양극 활물질 미도포부(1014)를 재단하거나 별도의 도전부재를 연결하여 양극 탭(111)을 형성할 수도 있다. 이러한 양극 활물질 미도포부(1014)는 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)의 일측에 형성되므로, 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이 양극 집전체(1011)의 같은 면에 형성된다.
이차 전지(1)가 실제 사용되는 도중에, 외부와의 충돌에 의해 사고가 발생할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 첨예한 물체가 이차 전지(1)를 관통하여, 상기 양극(101)과 음극(102)이 직접 접촉함으로써 단락(Short)이 발생할 수 있다. 이러한 단락은 짧은 시간에 빠른 속도로 다량의 가스 생성, 고온 상승 등을 야기시킬 수 있으며, 나아가 큰 폭발이 발생하여 대형 사고로 이어질 수도 있다. 일반적으로 양극(101)과 음극(102)의 접촉에는, 양극 집전체(1011)와 음극 집전체(1021)가 접촉하는 경우, 양극 집전체(1011)와 음극 활물질(1022)이 접촉하는 경우, 양극 활물질(1012)과 음극 집전체(1021)가 접촉하는 경우, 양극 활물질(1012)과 음극 활물질(1022)이 접촉하는 경우 등 크게 4 가지 경우가 있다.
그 중에서 일반적으로, 양극 집전체(1011)와 음극 활물질(1022)이 접촉할 때 열 발생량이 가장 많고 가장 높은 온도에 빠르게 도달하여, 폭발의 위험성이 가장 크다. 따라서, 양극 집전체(1011)와 음극 활물질(1022)의 접촉이 가장 위험한 접촉으로 알려져 있다. 이에, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따르면, 양극(101)은 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)와 양극 활물질 미도포부(1014) 사이에 코팅되며 난연제가 포함되는 양극 코팅부(1015)를 포함한다.
상기 난연제는 연소 반응을 저해하는 물질로, 할로겐계 난연제, 인계 난연제 또는 무기화합물 난연제 등 다양한 난연제를 포함할 수 있다.
할로겐계 난연제는 일반적으로 기체 상에서 발생하는 라디칼을 실질적으로 안정화시킴으로써 난연 효과를 발휘한다. 할로겐계 난연제는 예를 들어, 트리브로모 페녹시에탄, 테트라 브로모 비스페놀-A (TBBA), 옥타브로모 디페닐에테르(OBDPE), 브롬화 에폭시 올리고머, 브롬화 폴리 카보네이트 올리고머, 염소화 파라핀, 염소화 폴리에틸렌, 지환족 염소계 난연제 등이 있다.
인계 난연제는 일반적으로 열분해에 의해 폴리메타인산을 생성하고 이것이 보호층을 형성하거나 폴리메타인산이 생성될 때의 탈수작용에 의해서 생성되는 탄소 피막이 산소를 차단함으로써 난연 효과를 발휘한다. 인계 난연제의 예를 들어, 적인, 인산 암모늄 등의 phosphates, phosphine oxide, phosphine oxide diols, phosphites, phosphonates, triaryl phosphate, alkyldiaryl phosphate, trialkyl phosphate, resorcinaol bisdiphenyl phosphate (RDP) 등이 있다.
무기화합물 난연제는 일반적으로 열에 의해 분해되어, 물, 이산화탄소, 이산화황, 염화수소 등의 불연성 가스를 방출하고 흡열반응을 유발함으로써, 가연성 가스를 희석시켜 산소의 접근을 방지하고, 흡열반응에 의해 냉각 및 열분해 생성물의 생성을 감소시켜 난연 효과를 발휘한다. 무기 화합물 난연제는 예를 들어, 수산화알루미늄(Al(OH)3), 수산화마그네슘(Mg(OH)2), 붕산(BH3O3), 산화안티몬, 수산화주석, 산화주석, 산화몰리브덴, 지르코늄화합물, 붕산염, 칼슘염 등이 있다.
상기 난연제 중 특히 바람직하게는 무기화합물 난연제를 사용할 수 있다. 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따르면, 양극 코팅부(1015)에 이러한 난연제가 포함되며, 특히 무기화합물 난연제인 수산화알루미늄(Al(OH)3), 수산화마그네슘(Mg(OH)2) 또는 붕산(BH3O3)인 것이 바람직하다. 그리고 경우에 따라서는, 상기에 예시한 난연제와의 혼합 사용시 난연 상승효과를 유도하는 기타의 첨가제를 더 포함할 수도 있다.
양극 코팅부(1015)는 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)와 양극 활물질 미도포부(1014)의 사이에 코팅됨으로써, 양극 집전체(1011)와 음극 활물질(1022)이 직접 접촉하더라도 초기 발열을 억제하여 안전성을 확보할 수 있다.
특히, 양극 코팅부(1015)는 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이, 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)와 양극 활물질 미도포부(1014)의 경계면(1016)을 포함하여 코팅되는 것이 바람직하다. 즉, 양극 활물질(1012)이 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)에 먼저 도포되면, 양극 활물질(1012)의 일단은, 양극 활물질 도포부(1013)와 양극 활물질 미도포부(1014)의 경계면(1016)이 된다. 그러면 양극 코팅부(1015)가 상기 도포된 양극 활물질(1012)의 일단을 일부 커버하면서 코팅될 수 있다. 따라서, 양극 코팅부(1015)가 어느 정도 박리되더라도, 양극 활물질 미도포부(1014)의 양극 집전체(1011)가 크게 노출되지 않을 수 있다. 그럼으로써, 양극 코팅부(1015)의 일부 박리된 영역을 통해 양극 집전체(1011)와 음극 활물질(1022)이 접촉하는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
도 5는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 음극(102)의 평면도이고, 도 6은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 음극(102)의 음극 활물질 도포부(1023)와 음극 활물질 미도포부(1024)의 일부 확대도이다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따르면 전극 조립체(10)에 포함되는 복수의 전극(101, 102) 중 음극(102)에서, 음극 활물질 도포부(1023)는 음극 집전체(1021)의 적어도 하나의 면에 음극 활물질(1022)이 도포된 부분이다. 음극 활물질 도포부(1023)는 도 5에 도시된 바와 같이, 음극 집전체(1021)에서 음극 활물질(1022)이 도포된 부분이며, 이 때 상기 기술한 바와 같이, 음극 활물질(1022)에 선택적으로 도전제, 바인더, 충진제 등을 포함시킬 수 있다.
음극 활물질 미도포부(1024)는 음극(102)에서 음극 활물질 도포부(1023)의 일측에 형성되며 음극 활물질(1022)이 미도포된 부분이다. 상기 기술한 바와 같이, 이러한 음극 활물질 미도포부(1024)를 재단하거나 별도의 도전부재를 연결하여 음극 탭(112)을 형성할 수도 있다. 이러한 음극 활물질 미도포부(1024)는 음극 활물질 도포부(1023)의 일측에 형성되므로, 도 6에 도시된 바와 같이 음극 집전체(1021)의 같은 면에 형성된다.
상기 기술한 바와 같이, 양극 집전체(1011)와 음극 활물질(1022)이 접촉할 때 폭발의 위험성이 가장 크므로, 음극 집전체(1021)가 양극 집전체(1011) 또는 양극 활물질(1012)에 접촉하는 경우에는 폭발의 위험성이 상대적으로 작다. 따라서, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따르면, 음극(102)에는 난연제가 포함된 음극 코팅부가 코팅되지 않는다.
도 7은 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 음극(102a)의 평면도이고, 도 8은 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 음극(102a)의 음극 활물질 도포부(1023a)와 음극 활물질 미도포부(1024a)의 일부 확대도이다.
음극 집전체(1021)가 양극 집전체(1011) 또는 양극 활물질(1012)에 접촉하는 경우에는 폭발의 위험성이 상대적으로 작지만, 이는 양극 집전체(1011)와 음극 활물질(1022)이 접촉하는 경우와 비교하였을 때 상대적일 뿐이며, 안전성이 확보되는 것은 아니다.
따라서, 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따르면 도 7에 도시된 바와 같이, 음극(102a)은 음극 활물질 도포부(1023a)와 음극 활물질 미도포부(1024a) 사이에 코팅되며 난연제가 포함되는 음극 코팅부(1025a)를 더 포함한다. 그럼으로써, 음극 집전체(1021)와 양극 집전체(1011) 또는 양극 활물질(1012)이 직접 접촉하더라도 초기 발열을 억제하여 안전성을 확보할 수 있다.
특히, 음극 코팅부(1025a)는 도 8에 도시된 바와 같이, 음극 활물질 도포부(1023a)와 음극 활물질 미도포부(1024a)의 경계면(1026a)을 포함하여 코팅되는 것이 바람직하다. 즉, 음극 활물질(1022a)이 음극 활물질 도포부(1023a)에 먼저 도포되면, 음극 활물질(1022a)의 일단은, 음극 활물질 도포부(1023a)와 음극 활물질 미도포부(1024a)의 경계면(1026a)이 된다. 그러면 음극 코팅부(1025a)가 상기 도포된 음극 활물질(1022a)의 일단을 일부 커버하면서 코팅될 수 있다. 따라서, 음극 코팅부(1025a)가 어느 정도 박리되더라도, 음극 활물질 미도포부(1024a)의 음극 집전체(1021)가 크게 노출되지 않을 수 있다. 그럼으로써, 음극 코팅부(1025a)의 일부 박리된 영역을 통해 음극 집전체(1021)와 양극 집전체(1011) 또는 양극 활물질(1012)이 접촉하는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
본 발명이 속하는 기술분야의 통상의 지식을 가진 자는 본 발명이 그 기술적 사상이나 필수적인 특징을 변경하지 않고서 다른 구체적인 형태로 실시될 수 있다는 것을 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 그러므로 이상에서 기술한 실시예들은 모든 면에서 예시적인 것이며 한정적이 아닌 것으로 이해해야만 한다. 본 발명의 범위는 상기 상세한 설명보다는 후술하는 특허청구범위에 의하여 나타내어지며, 특허청구범위의 의미 및 범위 그리고 그 균등 개념으로부터 도출되는 다양한 실시 형태가 본 발명의 범위에 포함되는 것으로 해석되어야 한다.

- 양극 집전체의 적어도 하나의 면에 양극 활물질이 도포된 양극 활물질 도포부, 상기 양극 활물질 도포부의 일측에 형성되며 상기 양극 활물질이 미도포된 양극 활물질 미도포부 및 상기 양극 활물질 도포부와 상기 양극 활물질 미도포부 사이에 코팅되며 난연제가 포함되는 양극 코팅부를 포함하는 양극;음극 집전체의 적어도 하나의 면에 음극 활물질이 도포된 음극 활물질 도포부, 및 상기 음극 활물질 도포부의 일측에 형성되며, 상기 음극 활물질이 미도포된 음극 활물질 미도포부를 포함하는 음극; 및상기 양극 및 상기 음극 사이에 개재되는 분리막을 포함하는 전극 조립체.
- 제7항에 있어서,상기 음극은,상기 음극 활물질 도포부와 상기 음극 활물질 미도포부 사이에 코팅되며 난연제가 포함되는 음극 코팅부를 더 포함하는, 전극 조립체.
- 제7항에 따른 전극 조립체를 포함하는 이차 전지.
- 제7항에 있어서,상기 양극 및 음극으로부터 각각 일측으로 돌출 형성된 복수의 전극 탭;상기 전극 탭에 각각 연결되어, 상기 전극 조립체의 내부에서 생성된 전기를 외부로 전달하는 복수의 전극 리드;상기 전극 조립체를 내부에 수납하는 전지 케이스; 및상기 전극 리드의 주위를 포위하고, 상기 전지 케이스와 함께 실링되며, 난연제가 포함되는 절연부를 더 포함하는 이차 전지.
