Abstract

屈折率が相対的に高いコア部と屈折率が相対的に低いクラッド部とを有する光ファイバ母材であって、光ファイバ母材の半径方向について屈折率が変化するコア部からクラッド部に至る区間において、クラッド部の屈折率を屈折率比の基準0.0とし、コア部の屈折率の最大値を屈折率比1.0として、光ファイバ母材の径方向について、屈折率比が0.25となる第1の位置の光ファイバ母材の屈折率と、屈折率比が0.75となる第2の位置の光ファイバ母材の屈折率との間の差と、第1の位置および第2の位置の間隔(mm)との比の絶対値を下記の式1に従って算出した場合に0.0015(/mm)以上である。

Description

光ファイバ母材
 本発明は、光ファイバ母材に関する。
 光ファイバ母材は、線引きして細径化することにより光ファイバとなる。通信用光ファイバの光ファイバ母材は、屈折率が相対的に高いコア部とその外周に配され相対的に屈折率が低いクラッド部とを有する。VAD法による光ファイバ母材の製造では、コア部を堆積するコア堆積用バーナと、コアの外側にクラッド部を堆積するクラッド堆積用バーナとを設置して同時に用いる場合がある。
 データ通信量の近年の増加に伴い光ファイバの需要が高まっている。このため、増大する需要に応えるために、光ファイバ母材の大型化が求められている。母材を大型化する方法のひとつとして、コア堆積用バーナおよびクラッド堆積用バーナに供給する原料や可燃性ガスの流量を増加させる方法がある。
 一方、光ファイバの光学特性を決める重要なパラメータに、コア部の径とクラッド部との径の比がある。この比は、光ファイバのモードフィールド径などに大きな影響を及ぼす。このため、光ファイバ母材の段階でも、コア部の径とクラッド部との径の比と、当該比の光ファイバ母材の長手方向についての変動量を、より細かく把握することが求められる。
 光ファイバ母材のコア部の外径を測定する手段として、プリフォーム・アナライザを用いて屈折率分布を測定する方法がある。プリフォーム・アナライザは、点光源のレーザ光を使用して、当該レーザ光を母材側面に掃引する。このため、コア部径の測定に時間がかかる。そこで、光ファイバ母材の屈折率分布を短時間で測定する方法が提案されている(特許文献1参照)。

 上記文献に記載の方法は、母材の側面から平行光を照射し、光ファイバ母材の透過光の強度分布を測定する。この方法によると、コア部径の相対値をプリフォーム・アナライザよりも短時間で得られる。
 母材の外径は、レーザ外径測定器を用いることにより短時間で測定できるから、上記文献の方法を用いて、光ファイバ母材の同一断面における複数の周方向角度から計測したそれぞれのコア部径の相対値に基づいて、コア部の非円率を短時間で得られる。しかしながら、コア部の外径に対する比である外径比について、上記文献の方法で測定した測定値と、プリフォーム・アナライザを用いて測定した測定値との比が、母材の長手方向について一定しない場合があることが判った。
【一般的開示】
 本発明の一態様において、光ファイバ母材は、相対的に屈折率が高いコア部を有してもよい。また、本発明の一態様において、光ファイバ母材は、相対的に屈折率が低いクラッド部を有してもよい。本発明の一態様において、光ファイバ母材は、光ファイバ母材の半径方向について屈折率が変化するコア部からクラッド部に至る区間においてクラッド部の屈折率を屈折率比の基準0.0とし、コア部の屈折率の最大値を屈折率比1.0として、光ファイバ母材の径方向について、屈折率比が0.25となる第1の位置の光ファイバ母材の屈折率と、屈折率比が0.75となる第2の位置の光ファイバ母材の屈折率との間の屈折差と、第1の位置および第2の位置の間隔(mm)との比の絶対値を下記の式1に従って算出した場合に、0.0015(/mm)以上であってよい。

 本発明の一態様において、光ファイバ母材は、上記第1の位置よりも外周側に、光ファイバ母材の径方向について屈折率の変化を示す曲線が変曲点を生じる屈折率分布を有してもよい。また、本発明の一態様において、光ファイバ母材は、略円筒形状部分のコア部相当径が直径で22mm以上であってもよい。

 以下、発明の実施の形態を通じて本発明を説明するが、以下の実施形態は請求の範囲に係る発明を限定するものではない。また、実施形態の中で説明されている特徴の組み合わせの全てが発明の解決手段に必須であるとは限らない。
 図1は、光ファイバ母材となるガラス微粒子堆積体12の製造方法を説明する模式図である。図1に示すように、ガラス微粒子堆積体12は、出発材11の下端近傍に、コア部堆積用バーナ13、第1クラッド部堆積用バーナ14、および第2クラッド部堆積用バーナ15から噴射したガラス微粒子を堆積させて製造する。
 図1には、ガラス微粒子堆積体12を製造する場合のバーナ位置も示している。コア部堆積用バーナ13は、第1クラッド部堆積用バーナ14および第2クラッド部堆積用バーナ15から独立して最下方に配置される。コア部堆積用バーナ13は、ガラス原料の四塩化ケイ素の他に、四塩化ゲルマニウムなどのドーパント原料が同伴された火炎を噴射して、ガラス微粒子堆積体12のコア部を形成する。
 第1クラッド部堆積用バーナ14および第2クラッド部堆積用バーナ15は、コア部堆積用バーナ13よりも上方に配され、コア部堆積用バーナ13が出発材11に堆積させたコア部を外側から覆うようにクラッド部を形成する。このように、ガラス微粒子堆積体12は、全体として複数のバーナを使用して製造される。製造されたガラス微粒子堆積体12は、例えば塩素ガスを含む炉心管内で加熱して脱水した後、ヘリウムガス雰囲気の炉心管内にて更に加熱して透明ガラス化することにより、光ファイバ母材となる。
 図2は、第1クラッド部堆積用バーナ14および第2クラッド部堆積用バーナ15として使用し得るバーナ20の構造を示す模式的断面図である。図示のバーナ20は、同心状に配された複数の噴射口21a、21b、21d、21e、21fおよび小口径噴射口群21cを有し、可燃性ガス、酸素ガス、シールドガス等を同時に噴射する。
 なお、第1クラッド部堆積用バーナ14および第2クラッド部堆積用バーナ15は、クラッド部の堆積以外の役目も担う。例えば、火炎でコア部を焼き締めて密度を高めることで、ガラス微粒子堆積体12の割れを防止する。また、焼き締めることによってコアの径を細めて、ガラス微粒子堆積体12に付着せずに浮遊する積酸化ゲルマニウム微粒子の再付着を防止する。更に、火炎でコア部の温度を上昇させて余分な酸化ゲルマニウムを揮散させる。
 [実施例1]
 図1および図2に示した機材を用いてガラス微粒子堆積体12を製造した。コア部堆積用バーナ13に、酸素9.3L/分、水素6.8L/分、アルゴン0.38L/分、四塩化ケイ素0.46L/分および四塩化ゲルマニウム17mL/分を流した。
 第1クラッド部堆積用バーナ14として用いたバーナ20の噴射口21aには、四塩化ケイ素0.80L/分および酸素0.66L/分を流した。また、噴射口21dには水素32L/分、噴射口21fには酸素18L/分、小口径噴射口群21cには合計で酸素1.5L/分の流量で流した。
 第2クラッド部堆積用バーナとして用いたバーナ20の噴射口21aには、四塩化ケイ素4.8L/分および酸素3.6L/分を流した。また、噴射口21dには水素65L/分、噴射口21fには酸素31L/分、小口径噴射口群21cには合計で酸素6.2L/分の流量で流した。
 上記の条件で製造したガラス微粒子堆積体12を、塩素ガスを含む炉心管内にて1200℃前後に加熱して脱水した。更にその後、ガラス微粒子堆積体12を、ヘリウムガス雰囲気の炉心管内にて1500℃前後に加熱し透明ガラス化した。こうして、光ファイバ母材が得られた。
 上記の条件で製造した光ファイバ母材において、長手方向両端のテーパ状の部分を除いて、概ね径が安定している円筒状部分で、屈折率分布をプリフォーム・アナライザで測定した。その結果、コア部の径が22.0mmであることが判った。また、光ファイバ母材の径方向について、屈折率比が0.25になる位置と、屈折率比が0.75になる位置について求めた比Rの値は0.00167(1/mm)であった。ここで、屈折率比および比Rは下記のように定義される。
 図3は、光ファイバ母材における屈折率比の概念を説明する図である。図3には、光ファイバ母材の径方向の屈折率分布が示される。ここで、屈折率比は、相対的に低い屈折率を有するクラッド部の屈折率を基準0.0とし、相対的に高い屈折率を有するコア部の屈折率の最大値を1.0とする相対値である。クラッド部の屈折率は、光ファイバ母材の径方向について外径に対する比である外径比が95%に相当する位置の屈折率とした。
 図4は、光ファイバ母材の径方向について、コア部とクラッド部との境界を含む区間における屈折率比の変化を示すグラフである。ここで「コア部とクラッド部との境界」とは、光ファイバ母材の径方向について、光ファイバ母材の屈折率比が0.75になる位置と、屈折率比が0.25になる位置との間の区間を意味する。また、半径位置は、光ファイバ母材の径方向について、光ファイバ母材の中心からの距離を意味する。
 上記の光ファイバ母材における比Rは、下記の式1により定義される値である。

 また、図4に示すように、光ファイバ母材の径方向について、コア部とクラッド部の境界の外周側には、屈折率比の変化を示す曲線が変曲点を含む。このため、光ファイバ母材全体においてはコア部からクラッド部に向かって低下する屈折率が、この変曲点の位置では増加する。
 上記の屈折率比の変曲点は、第1クラッド部堆積用バーナ14のガス流量を調整することによって形成できる。例えば、四塩化ケイ素などのガラス原料に対する可燃性ガスや助燃性ガスの割合を、より多くなるように調整すればよい。このような屈折率の増加領域を設けることにより、この光ファイバ母材を線引きして作成する光ファイバの光学特性を従来と同等に調整することが容易となる。
 更に、本実施例では、上記の光ファイバ母材について、平行光線を用いてコア部の径を測定した。光ファイバ母材をマッチングオイルに浸漬した状態で、キーエンス社製の緑色LED平行光を用いた寸法計測器LS-9030Dを用いた。光ファイバ母材の側面から平行光を照射し、光ファイバ母材を透過した光を受光して撮影した画像から光強度分布を測定した。また、測定した光強度分布の二つの暗部の間隔を光ファイバ母材のコア部相当径(コア部径の相対値)として、光ファイバ母材の長手方向に沿って1mmピッチで繰り返し、各々の位置においてコア部相当径を計測した。
 同じ光ファイバ母材に対して、プリフォーム・アナライザを用いて、長手方向に20~100mmの間隔で屈折率分布を計測し、コア部の屈折率の半値幅をコア部の径として、測定結果を上記実施例と比較した。
 図5は、平行光を用いた測定によるコア部相当径の値と、プリフォーム・アナライザを用いたコア部の径の測定結果とを比較して示す図である。図示のように、測定方法の異なる測定結果の値の比は1.04と、略一致していた。
 図6は、光ファイバ母材の長手方向について、それぞれの測定方法でコア径を測定した結果を比較して示す図である。図示のように、光ファイバ母材の長手方向についても、平行光を用いた測定の測定結果と、プリフォーム・アナライザを用いた測定結果とが概ね一致しており、コア部の径が23mmを越える光ファイバ母材について、平行光による測定でもプリフォーム・アナライザによる測定結果に代替し得る測定結果が得られることが判った。
 [実施例2]
 実施例1と同じ機材を用いてガラス微粒子堆積体を製造した。コア部堆積用バーナ13には、酸素8.9L/分、水素6.7L/分、アルゴン0.40L/分、四塩化ケイ素0.41L/分および四塩化ゲルマニウム20mL/分を流した。
 第1クラッド部堆積用バーナ14の噴射口21aには四塩化ケイ素0.91L/分および酸素0.68L/分を、噴射口21dには水素34L/分、噴射口21fには酸素18L/分、小口径噴射口群21cには合計で酸素1.4L/分の流量で流した。また、第2クラッド部堆積用バーナ15の噴射口21aには四塩化ケイ素5.4L/分および酸素3.5L/分の設定で、噴射口21dには水素70L/分、噴射口21fには酸素30L/分、小口径噴射口群21cには合計で酸素6.3L/分の流量で流した。
 製造したガラス微粒子堆積体を、塩素ガスを含む炉心管内にて1200℃前後に加熱して脱水した。次いで、ヘリウムガス雰囲気の炉心管内にて1500℃前後に加熱して透明ガラス化して、光ファイバ母材を作成した。
 上記の条件で作成した光ファイバ母材において、長手方向両端のテーパ状の部分を除いて、概ね径が安定している円筒状部分について、屈折率分布をプリフォーム・アナライザで測定した。その結果、その屈折率分布には以下の特徴が見られた。すなわち、実施例1でも算出した比Rの値は0.00149(1/mm)であった。また、コアに相当する径は21.6mmであった。
 同じ光ファイバ母材の側面から平行光を照射し、前記光ファイバ母材を透過した光を受光して撮影した像の光強度分布を測定した。光強度分布の二つの暗部の間隔を前記光ファイバ母材のコア相当径とすることができ、実施例2で製造した光ファイバ母材のコア部とクラッド部の径比を容易に測定できた。
 [比較例1]
 実施例1と同じ機材を用いて、比較例1に係る光ファイバ母材を作成した。コア部堆積用バーナ13には、酸素9.3L/分、水素6.5L/分、アルゴン0.38L/分、四塩化ケイ素0.44L/分および四塩化ゲルマニウム16mL/分を流した。
 第1クラッド部堆積用バーナ14の噴射口21aには四塩化ケイ素0.80L/分および酸素0.66L/分の設定で流した。噴射口21dには水素29L/分、噴射口21fには酸素15L/分、小口径噴射口群21cには合計で酸素3.0L/分の流量で流した。また、第2クラッド部堆積用バーナ15の噴射口21aには四塩化ケイ素4.8L/分および酸素3.6L/分の設定で、噴射口21dには水素63L/分、噴射口21fには酸素31L/分、小口径噴射口群21cには合計で酸素6.2L/分の流量で流した。
 上記の条件で製造したガラス微粒子堆積体12を、塩素ガスを含む炉心管内にて1200℃前後に加熱して脱水した。その後、ヘリウムガス雰囲気の炉心管内にて1500℃前後に加熱し透明ガラス化して、光ファイバ母材を作成した。
 上記の条件で製造した光ファイバ母材において、長手方向両端のテーパ状の部分を除いて、概ね径が安定している円筒状部分について、屈折率分布をプリフォーム・アナライザで測定した。
 図7は、比較例1に係る光ファイバ母材の屈折率比の分布を、実施例1に係る光ファイバ母材の屈折率比の分布と比較して示すグラフである。図示のように、製造条件の相違を反映して両者の屈折率比分布は異なっている。比較例1に係る光ファイバ母材の比Rは、0.00113(1/mm)であった。
 上記の光ファイバ母材に、側面から平行光を照射して、光ファイバ母材を透過した光を受光して撮影した画像の光強度分布を測定した。光強度分布の二つの暗部の間隔を前記光ファイバ母材のコア相当径とした。更に、光ファイバ母材の長手方向について複数箇所で、同様の方法でコア相当径を測定した。測定結果を下記の表1に示す。

 表1に示す通り、上記の測定方法では、比較例として製造した光ファイバ母材のコア相当径を、長手方向の一部で測定できなかった。
 図8は、上記比較例1について、平行光を用いた測定によるコア部相当径と、プリフォーム・アナライザを用いたコア部の径の測定結果とを比較して示す図である。図示のように、測定方法の異なる測定結果の値の比は、0.95から1.05の範囲でばらついており、長手方向に一定にならなかった。
 [他の実施例および他の比較例]
 更に、比Rが異なる複数の実施例および比較例を作成して、平行光の照射によるコア相当径の測定の可否について調べた。結果を下記の表2にまとめて示す。

 図示のように、比Rが0.0015以上の場合は、平行光の透過光強度分布から有効なコア相当径を測定できることが判る。これにより、コア部の相当径が22mm以上になった場合であっても、平行光を照射する簡易かつ迅速な方法で、大型で大径の光ファイバ母材のコア部相当径を測定して、信頼性の高い測定結果を得ることができる。
 以上説明した通り、光ファイバ母材の径が大きくなった場合、平行光を用いる方法で計測されたコア部相当径の値と、プリフォーム・アナライザを用いて計測したコア部径の値との比率が変化してしまう場合があった。そのような場合にプリフォーム・アナライザを用いて計測すると、光ファイバ母材の長手方向について測定間隔が大きくなり測定精度が低下するか、小間隔で測定して測定時間が長くなるかのトレードオフを避けることができなかった。
 しかしながら、上記実施例に係る光ファイバ母材は、平行光によるコア部相当径の測定結果と、プリフォーム・アナライザで計測したコア部径の測定結果との関係が安定しており、迅速且つ容易に、信頼性の高い計測結果を得ることができる。従って、大型化した光ファイバ母材の品質と生産性を向上させ、光ファイバの供給を向上させることができる。

Claims (3)

  1.  屈折率が相対的に高いコア部と屈折率が相対的に低いクラッド部とを有する光ファイバ母材であって、
     前記光ファイバ母材の半径方向について屈折率が変化する前記コア部から前記クラッド部に至る区間において、前記クラッド部の屈折率を屈折率比の基準0.0とし、前記コア部の屈折率の最大値を屈折率比1.0として、
     前記光ファイバ母材の径方向について、前記屈折率比が0.25となる第1の位置の前記光ファイバ母材の屈折率と、前記屈折率比が0.75となる第2の位置の前記光ファイバ母材の屈折率との間の差と、前記第1の位置および前記第2の位置の間隔(mm)との比の絶対値を下記の式1に従って算出した場合に0.0015(/mm)以上である光ファイバ母材。

  2.  前記光ファイバ母材は、前記第1の位置よりも外周側に、前記光ファイバ母材の径方向について屈折率の変化を示す曲線が変曲点を生じる屈折率分布を有する請求項1に記載の光ファイバ母材。
  3.  前記光ファイバ母材が略円筒形状になる部分のコア部相当径が直径で22mm以上である請求項1または2に記載の光ファイバ母材。
