Abstract
光導波路に与えた光の位相をより良く制御する。 光学素子1は、凹部44により隔てられた2つの凸部42a、42bと、凹部44の下に配置され2つの凸部42a、42bを接続する接続部46とを有し、電気光学効果を奏する第一電気光学部材4と、凹部44内に配置された凹部部材62を有し、電気光学効果を奏する第二電気光学部材6とを備える。さらに、第一電気光学部材4の誘電率が、第二電気光学部材6の誘電率よりも高い。しかも、第一電気光学部材4の屈折率が、第二電気光学部材6の屈折率よりも高い。なお、電極3を通じて電界が印加されている間に、伝送すべき光が凹部部材62に与えられる。
Description
本発明は、光導波路に関する。
従来より、電気光学ポリマをSiで挟み込んだ光導波路が知られている(例えば、特許文献1の図12を参照)。このような光導波路によれば、電気光学ポリマに集中的に電界が印加される。これにより、電気光学ポリマの屈折率が変化する(電気光学効果)。ここで、電気光学ポリマに光を与えると、光の位相を制御することができる。
なお、特許文献2(例えば、図1A参照)にも、上記の従来技術と類似した構造の光導波路が開示されている。また、特許文献3(例えば、要約を参照)には、フォトニック結晶を用いた光導波路が開示されている。
しかしながら、上記のような従来技術にかかる光導波路によれば、電気光学ポリマから漏れた光については、光の位相を制御することができない。よって、光導波路に与えた光の位相を充分に制御することができない。
そこで、本発明は、光導波路に与えた光の位相をより良く制御することを課題とする。
本発明にかかる光学素子は、凹部により隔てられた2つの凸部と、前記凹部の下に配置され前記2つの凸部を接続する接続部とを有し、電気光学効果を奏する第一電気光学部材と、前記凹部内に配置された凹部部材を有し、電気光学効果を奏する第二電気光学部材とを備え、前記第一電気光学部材の誘電率が、前記第二電気光学部材の誘電率よりも高く、前記第一電気光学部材の屈折率が、前記第二電気光学部材の屈折率よりも高く、電界が印加されている間に、伝送すべき光が前記凹部部材に与えられるように構成される。
上記のように構成された光学素子によれば、第一電気光学部材が、凹部により隔てられた2つの凸部と、前記凹部の下に配置され前記2つの凸部を接続する接続部とを有し、電気光学効果を奏する。第二電気光学部材が、前記凹部内に配置された凹部部材を有し、電気光学効果を奏する。前記第一電気光学部材の誘電率が、前記第二電気光学部材の誘電率よりも高い。前記第一電気光学部材の屈折率が、前記第二電気光学部材の屈折率よりも高い。電界が印加されている間に、伝送すべき光が前記凹部部材に与えられる。
なお、本発明にかかる光学素子は、前記第一電気光学部材が強誘電体であるようにしてもよい。
なお、本発明にかかる光学素子は、前記第二電気光学部材が電気光学ポリマであるようにしてもよい。
なお、本発明にかかる光学素子は、前記第二電気光学部材が、さらに、前記凸部の上方に配置された上方部材を有するようにしてもよい。
なお、本発明にかかる光学素子は、前記第一電気光学部材が、前記凸部によって前記凹部と隔てられている側方領域を有するようにしてもよい。
なお、本発明にかかる光学素子は、前記側方領域がフォトニック結晶であるようにしてもよい。
なお、本発明にかかる光学素子は、前記側方領域が、前記凸部よりも低いようにしてもよい。
以下、本発明の実施形態を図面を参照しながら説明する。
第一の実施形態
図1は、本発明の第一の実施形態にかかる光学素子1の斜視図である。図2は、第一の実施形態にかかる光学素子1の正面図である。

第一の実施形態にかかる光学素子1は、基板2、電極3、第一電気光学部材4、第二電気光学部材6を備える。ただし、図2においては、電極3を図示省略する。
基板2は、例えばサファイアの基板である。
第一電気光学部材4は、基板2上に配置されており、電気光学効果を奏する。ただし、ここでいう電気光学効果は、電界による屈折率の変化を意味する。すなわち、第一電気光学部材4に電界を印加すると、第一電気光学部材4の屈折率が変化する。
第一電気光学部材4は、凸部42a、42b、凹部44、接続部46、側方領域48a、48bを有する。なお、凸部42a、42b、凹部44、接続部46および側方領域48a、48bは、一体であってもよい。
凹部44は、第一電気光学部材4のほぼ中央に、手前から奥にかけて延伸する溝状のものである。凹部44の側壁は、凹部44の底に対して、急な角度で切り立っているようにしてもよい。
2つの凸部42a、42bは、互いに平行に、第一電気光学部材4の手前から奥にかけて延伸する。2つの凸部42a、42bは、凹部44により隔てられている。凸部42aおよび凸部42bの幅は、凹部44の幅よりも広いようにしてもよい。凸部42aおよび凸部42bの凹部44の底に対する高さは、凹部44の幅よりも大きいようにしてもよい。
接続部46は、凹部44の下に配置されており、2つの凸部42a、42bを接続している。
側方領域48aは、凸部42aの側方に位置しており、凸部42aによって凹部44と隔てられている。側方領域48aは、凸部42aよりも低い。
側方領域48bは、凸部42bの側方に位置しており、凸部42bによって凹部44と隔てられている。側方領域48bは、凸部42bよりも低い。
第一電気光学部材4は、例えば、PLZT、LiNbO3、BaTiO3である。なお、第一電気光学部材4をPLZTとすると、(1)誘電率が400~700と高く、屈折率も2.4と高いので、凹部44の間に電界および光が集中する、(2)電気光学効果が高い(EO係数が100pm/V程度)、といった有利な効果を奏する。なお、第一電気光学部材4は、強誘電体であってもよい。
第二電気光学部材6は、電気光学効果を奏する。すなわち、第二電気光学部材6に電界を印加すると、第二電気光学部材6の屈折率が変化する。
第二電気光学部材6は、凹部部材62、クラッド(上方部材)64を有する(図2参照)。なお、凹部部材62およびクラッド(上方部材)64は、一体であってもよい。
凹部部材62は、凹部44内に配置されている部材である(図2参照)。
クラッド(上方部材)64は、凸部42aおよび凸部42bの上方に配置されている(図2参照)。
第二電気光学部材6は、例えば、電気光学ポリマである。なお、第二電気光学部材6を電気光学ポリマとすると、(1)誘電率が3程度と低く、屈折率も1.5と低いので、凹部44の間に電界および光が集中する、(2)電気光学効果が高い(EO係数が100pm/V以上)、(3)電気光学ポリマを凹部44内に流し込むことにより、凹部44内に凹部部材62を配置しやすい、といった有利な効果を奏する。
なお、第一電気光学部材4の誘電率は、第二電気光学部材6の誘電率よりも高いものとする。また、第一電気光学部材4の屈折率は、第二電気光学部材6の屈折率よりも高いものとする。
例えば、第一電気光学部材4をPLZTとし、第二電気光学部材6をEOポリマとした場合、第一電気光学部材4の誘電率(400~700)は、第二電気光学部材6の誘電率(3程度)よりも高い。また、第一電気光学部材4の屈折率(2.4)は、第二電気光学部材6の屈折率(1.5)よりも高い。
電極3は、第一電気光学部材4上に配置されている。電極3は、凹部44の左側および右側に配置されている。電極3は、図示省略した直流電圧源に接続されている。例えば、凹部44の左側の電極3が直流電圧源の陽極に接続され、凹部44の右側の電極3が直流電圧源の陰極に接続されている。
次に、第一の実施形態の動作を説明する。
図示省略した直流電圧源により、電極3を介して、光学素子1に電界が印加されている間に、光学素子1により伝送すべき光が凹部部材62に与えられる。いわば、光学素子1は光を伝送するための光導波路としての機能を果たす。
凹部部材62には、電界および光が集中する。これにより、凹部部材62に与えられた光は、凹部部材62に印加された電界による第二電気光学部材6の電気光学効果によって、位相が変化する。光学素子1に印加する電界によって、凹部部材62に印加する電界を制御できるので、凹部部材62に与えられた光の位相を制御できる。
また、凹部部材62から漏れた光は、凸部42a、42bが受ける。さらに、凹部部材62に印加された電界は、凹部部材62から接続部46を通って凸部42a、42bにも印加される。これにより、凸部42a、42bに漏れた光は、凸部42a、42bに印加された電界による第一電気光学部材4の電気光学効果によって、位相が変化する。光学素子1に印加する電界によって、凸部42a、42bに印加する電界を制御できるので、凸部42a、42bに漏れた光の位相を制御できる。
これにより、光学素子1により伝送すべき光の位相制御を行うことができる。
第一の実施形態によれば、光学素子1に与えた光のうち、凹部部材62に集中した光の位相を、第二電気光学部材6の電気光学効果によって、制御できる。
しかも、凹部部材62から漏れた光を凸部42a、42bによって受けることができる。さらに、凹部部材62に印加された電界は、凹部部材62から接続部46を通って凸部42a、42bにも印加される。これにより、凹部部材62から漏れた光の位相についても、第一電気光学部材4の電気光学効果によって、制御できる。
よって、第一の実施形態によれば、凹部部材62に集中した光についてのみならず、凹部部材62から漏れた光についても位相を制御できるため、光導波路としての機能を果たす光学素子1に与えた光の位相をより良く制御することができる。
第二の実施形態
第二の実施形態にかかる光学素子1は、側方領域48a、48bがフォトニック結晶である点が、第一の実施形態にかかる光学素子1と異なる。

第一電気光学部材4は、第一の実施形態とほぼ同様である。ただし、側方領域48aは凸部42aと同じ高さである。また、側方領域48bは凸部42bと同じ高さである。
孔部8は、側方領域48a、48bに開けられた円柱状の孔である。孔部8の内部に第二電気光学部材6が入り込んでいる。側方領域48a、48bは、孔部8の存在により、フォトニック結晶となる。
第二の実施形態の動作は、第一の実施形態の動作とほぼ同様である。ただし、フォトニック結晶である側方領域48a、48bにおいては、第一の実施形態にかかる側方領域48a、48bよりも、光の速度が遅くなる。
第二の実施形態によれば、第一の実施形態と同様な効果を奏する。さらに、第二の実施形態によれば、側方領域48a、48bにおいて光の速度が遅くなるため、第一の実施形態よりも、光の位相の制御量をより大きくすることができる。

Claims (7)
- 凹部により隔てられた2つの凸部と、前記凹部の下に配置され前記2つの凸部を接続する接続部とを有し、電気光学効果を奏する第一電気光学部材と、
前記凹部内に配置された凹部部材を有し、電気光学効果を奏する第二電気光学部材と、
を備え、
前記第一電気光学部材の誘電率が、前記第二電気光学部材の誘電率よりも高く、
前記第一電気光学部材の屈折率が、前記第二電気光学部材の屈折率よりも高く、
電界が印加されている間に、伝送すべき光が前記凹部部材に与えられる、
光学素子。 - 請求項1に記載の光学素子であって、
前記第一電気光学部材が強誘電体である、
光学素子。 - 請求項1に記載の光学素子であって、
前記第二電気光学部材が電気光学ポリマである、
光学素子。 - 請求項1に記載の光学素子であって、
前記第二電気光学部材が、さらに、前記凸部の上方に配置された上方部材を有する、
光学素子。 - 請求項1に記載の光学素子であって、
前記第一電気光学部材が、前記凸部によって前記凹部と隔てられている側方領域を有する、
光学素子。 - 請求項5に記載の光学素子であって、
前記側方領域がフォトニック結晶である光学素子。 - 請求項5に記載の光学素子であって、
前記側方領域が、前記凸部よりも低い、
光学素子。
