Abstract

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines edelmetall-freien Katalysators, umfassend die Schritte - Bereitstellen eines organische Heterozyklen als Katalysator aufweisenden Katalysatorträgers - Aufbringen einer oxidationshemmenden Schutzschicht. Die Erfindung betrifft weiterhin einen edelmetall-freien Katalysator, eine Brennstoffzelle sowie ein Kraftfahrzeug.

Description

Verfahren zur Herstellung eines edelmetall-freien Katalysators, edelmetall- freier Katalysator, Brennstoffzelle sowie Kraftfahrzeug
BESCHREIBUNG:
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines edelmetall-freien Katalysators, einen edelmetall-freien Katalysator, eine Brennstoffzelle sowie ein Kraftfahrzeug mit einer Brennstoffzelle. Brennstoffzellen finden immer weitere Verbreitung und werden insbesondere auch hinsichtlich ihrer Eignung zur Verwendung in Kraftfahrzeugen optimiert. Brennstoffzellen dienen dazu, im Wege einer elektrochemischen Reaktion elektrische Energie bereitzustellen, mit der ein Elektromotor betrieben wer- den kann. Für diese elektrochemische Reaktion zwischen einem Brennstoff, in der Regel Wasserstoff und einem sauerstoffhaltigen Gas, in der Regel Luft, wird ein Katalysator benötigt, der in der Regel durch Edelmetalle wie Platin oder Palladium gebildet ist. Allerdings werden bei der Mehrzahl zu ei- nem Brennstoffzellenstapel zusammengefassten Brennstoffzellen für die Be- lange des Einsatzes in einem Kraftfahrzeug Edelmetalle im Wert von mehre- ren 1.000€ benötigt. Um die Kosten für eine Brennstoffzelle zu senken, be- stehen daher die Bemühungen, edelmeta II -freie Katalysatoren bereitzustel- len, also Katalysatoren, die ohne den Einsatz von Platin, Palladium, Rutheni- um, Iridium, Osmium, Rhenium, Rhodium, Gold oder deren Legierungen ge- bildet werden. Bei edelmetall-freien Katalysatoren auf Basis von Metall- Komplexen, zum Beispiel Eisenporphyrinen zeigt sich allerdings, dass diese eine geringe Lebensdauer haben und teilweise bis zu 50 Prozent ihrer Leis- tung verlieren innerhalb weniger Betriebsstunden. In der JP 2010067509 A wird zur Verbesserung der Stabilität eines leitenden Trägers für den edelmetall-freien Metalloxid-Katalysator wie AI2O3 die Auf- bringung einer Schutzschicht vorgeschlagen. In der US 2017/0098829 A1 wird ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines edelmetall-freien Katalysators vor- geschlagen, bei der der Katalysatorträger eine Schutzschicht aus T1O2, AI2O3 aufweist.
Der Erfindung liegt die Aufgabe zugrunde, ein Verfahren zur Herstellung ei- nes edelmetall-freien Katalysators anzugeben, dessen Lebensdauer bei gleichbleibender Leistung verlängert ist. Aufgabe ist es weiterhin, einen ver- besserten edelmetall-freien Katalysator, eine verbesserte Brennstoffzelle sowie ein verbessertes Kraftfahrzeug bereitzustellen.
Diese Aufgabe wird durch ein Verfahren mit den Merkmalen des Anspruchs 1 , durch einen edelmetall-freien Katalysator mit den Merkmalen des An- spruchs 8, durch eine Brennstoffzelle mit den Merkmalen des Anspruches 9 sowie durch ein Kraftfahrzeug mit den Merkmalen des Anspruchs 10 gelöst. Vorteilhafte Ausgestaltungen mit zweckmäßigen Weiterbildungen der Erfin- dung sind in den abhängigen Ansprüchen angegeben.
Bei der Suche nach Alternativen zu edelmetall-freien Katalysatoren, insbe- sondere Anoden katalysatoren, auf Basis von Metall-Komplexen wurden auch organische Heterozyklen untersucht, die durch Pyrolyse von Porphyrinen- Komplexverbindungen, insbesondere Metall komplexen von Fe, Co, Mn mit Polypyrrolen oder Polyanilinen entstehen, wie in US 2016240860A beschrie- ben. Bei denen zeigte sich allerdings eine hohe Degradation, so dass inner- halb von 40 Betriebsstunden Leistungseinbrüche von bis zu 50 % beobachtet worden sind. Problematisch dabei zeigte sich ein oxidativer Abbau der orga- nischen Heterozyklen sowie der Katalysatorträger bei derartigen aus dem Stand der Technik bekannten edelmetall-freien Katalysatoren. Erfindungs- gemäß wird vorgeschlagen, eine oxidationshemmende Schutzschicht auf den Kohlenstoff bzw. organischen Trägeraufzubringen. Dabei ist zu beach- ten, dass die Pyrolyse die Schutzschicht nicht beeinträchtigt, wobei dies ins- besondere gewährleistet ist, wenn die Schutzschicht erst nach der Pyrolyse aufgebracht wird. Diese Schutzschicht wird dabei gebildet durch ein Material, das ausgewählt ist aus einer Gruppe, die AI2O3, T1O2, SnÜ2 umfasst, wobei die Schutzschicht mit einer Schichtdicke aufgetragen wird, die zwischen 1 nm und 50 nm liegt. Es zeigt sich dabei, dass die Aktivität des Katalysator- komplexes auch bei den konkret vorliegenden Katalysatoren nicht beeinflusst wird, und zwar bei konstanten potentiostatischem Betrieb als auch bei un- günstigen Betriebsparametern z.B. bei Start-Stop-Bedingungen. Dabei be- steht die Möglichkeit, dass die Schutzschicht mit einer Atomlagenabschei- dung (für englisch„atomic lager deposition“) aufgetragen wird. Alternativ be- steht auch die Möglichkeit, ein physikalisches Abscheideverfahren zur Auf- tragung der Schutzschicht zu verwenden, z. B. ein Plasma-Verfahren. Prinzi- piell kann die Aufbringung dieser Schicht auf die Katalysatorpartikel vor de- ren Verarbeitung zu einer CCM (Catalyst coated membrane) oder an einer CCM nach Aufbringung der Katalysatorpaste auf eine Membran bzw. einen Katalysatorträger oder eine GDL (Gas Diffusions Layer) erfolgen.
Ergänzend besteht auch die Möglichkeit, dass der Katalysatorträger durch einen Kohlenstoffträger gebildet ist, der bereits vor dem Aufbringen des edelmetall-freien Katalysators stabilisiert wird, sodass eine Beschichtung des Kohlenstoffträgers vor Aufbringung des Katalysators erfolgen kann und auch eine nachträgliche Beschichtung des Kohlenstoffsträgers nach Aufbringung des Katalysators möglich ist. Die Stabilisierung des Kohlenstoffträgers kann durch (Teil-)Grafitisicherung und/oder durch Beschichtung mittels AI2O3, T1O2, SnÜ2 erfolgen.
Ein nach diesen vorstehend genannten Verfahrensschritten gebildeter edel- metallfreier-Katalysator zeichnet durch deutlich reduzierte Kosten bei der Fertigung einer Brennstoffzelle aus, sowie durch eine verlängerte Lebens- dauer, die den edelmetall-freien Katalysator mit Metallheterozyklen deutlich überlegen ist. Dieser edelmetall-freier Katalysator kann insbesondere in einer Brennstoffzelle genutzt werden, und zwar in einer Zuordnung unmittelbar der Membran in einer Membranelektrodenanordnung oder als Bestandteil einer Gasdiffusionselektrode. Die Kostenvorteile bei der Fertigung einer derartigen Brennstoffzelle schlagen sich besonders deutlich nieder, wenn mehrere Brennstoffzellen einen Brennstoffzellenstapel zusammengefasst sind. Kos- tenvorteile ergeben sich dabei auch bei dem Einsatz in Kraftfahrzeugen.
Weitere Vorteile, Merkmale und Einzelheiten der Erfindung ergeben sich aus den Ansprüchen, der nachfolgenden Beschreibung bevorzugter Ausfüh- rungsformen sowie anhand der Zeichnungen. Dabei zeigen:
Figur 1 eine schematische Darstellung der Aufbringung einer oxida- tionshemmenden Schutzschicht aus AI2O3 auf einen organi- schen Heterozyklen als Katalysator aufweisenden Katalysator- träger.
In Figur 1 ist schematisch ein durch einen Kohlenstoffträger gebildeter Kata- lysatorträger 1 dargestellt, der als edelmetall-freier Katalysator organische Heterozyklen trägt. Bei diesem wird mit einer Atomlagenabscheidung eine oxidationshemmende Schutzschicht 2 aufgetragen, die in dem gezeigten Ausführungsbeispiel durch AI2O3 gebildet ist, alternativ sind aber auch ande- re oxidationshemmende Schutzschichten 2 möglich wie z.B : T1O2, Sn02. Die Schutzschicht 2 wird mit einer Schichtdicke aufgetragen, die zwischen 1 nm und 50 nm liegt, so dass sich durch diese oxidationshemmende Schutz- schicht 2 ein Schutz vor einem oxidativen Angriff sowohl gegenüber den or- ganischen Heterozyklen als auch dem Katalysatorträger 1 ergibt.
Alternativ besteht auch die Möglichkeit, dass ein physikalisches Abscheide- verfahren wie ein Plasma-Verfahren zur Auftragung der Schutzschicht 2 ver- wendet wird.
Als Alternative besteht weiterhin die Möglichkeit, den durch einen Kohlen- stoffträger gebildeten Katalysatorträger 1 vor dem Aufbringen des edelmetall- freien Katalysators zu stabilisieren, indem nämlich eine Graphitisierung er- folgt oder eine Beschichtung durch AI203und/oder T1O2 und/oder Sn02.
Mit diesem Verfahren wird ein edelmetall-freier Katalysator bereitgestellt, der gegenüber edelmetallhaltigen Katalysatoren einen deutlichen Kostenvorteil und gegenüber anderen edelmetall-freien Katalysatoren eine deutlich verlän- gerte Lebensdauer besitzt, so dass sich dessen Einsatz insbesondere in Brennstoffzellen und diese wiederum in Kraftfahrzeugen anbietet.

Claims

ANSPRÜCHE:
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung eines edelmetall-freien Katalysators, um- fassend die Schritte
- Bereitstellen eines organische Heterozyklen als Katalysator auf- weisenden Katalysatorträgers (1 )
- Aufbringen einer oxidationshemmenden Schutzschicht (2).
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 , dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die
Schutzschicht (2) gebildet wird durch ein Material, das ausgewählt ist aus einer Gruppe, die AI2O3, T1O2, SnÜ2 umfasst.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Schutzschicht (2) mit einer Schichtdicke aufgetragen wird, die zwi- schen 1 nm und 50 nm liegt.
4. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeich- net, dass die Schutzschicht (2) mit einer Atomlagenabscheidung auf- getragen wird.
5. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeich- net, dass ein physikalisches Abscheideverfahren zur Auftragung der Schutzschicht (2) verwendet wird.
6. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5, dadurch gekennzeich- net, dass der Katalysatorträger (1 ) durch einen Kohlenstoffträger ge- bildet ist, der vor dem Aufbringen des edelmetall-freien Katalysators stabilisiert wird.
7. Verfahren nach Anspruch 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Ver- fahrensschritt der Stabilisierung durch Grafitisierung und/oder durch Beschichtung mittels AI2O3, T1O2 oder SnÜ2 erfolgt.
8. Edelmetall-freier Katalysator, gebildet durch ein Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7.
9. Brennstoffzelle mit einem der Membran zugeordneten edelmetall- freien Katalysator nach Anspruch 8.
10. Kraftfahrzeug mit einer Brennstoffzelle nach Anspruch 9.
