Abstract

Description

反射型偏光部材の加工方法、および反射型偏光部材
 本開示は、反射型偏光部材の加工方法、および当該加工方法により得られる反射型偏光部材に関連する。
 日本国実用新案出願公告昭61-025002号公報は、偏光部材の一例としての偏光板を用いた表示切替装置を開示している。
 偏光部材は、特定の向きに延びる偏光軸を有している。偏光軸と平行な偏光成分を有する光は、偏光部材の通過を許容される。以降の説明においては、このような光を第一偏光と称する。偏光軸と平行でない偏光成分を有する光は、通過を許容されない。以降の説明においては、このような光を第二偏光と称する。
 上記の表示切替装置においては、光源から出射された光の進路上に偏光軸の向きが相違する複数の偏光板が配置されている。当該複数の偏光板には、相違する透明なパターンが形成されている。以降の説明における「透明」という語は、第一偏光と第二偏光の双方について通過を許容する特性を意味する。以降の説明における「パターン」という語は、図形、文字、シンボル、マーク、絵柄などを含む意味である。
 上記の表示切替装置においては、入射させる光の偏光方向を切り替えることにより、特定の偏光板について第二偏光を形成している。入射光は、当該特定の偏光板においてパターンが形成された領域のみを通過する。結果として、当該パターンがユーザに視認される。入射させる光の偏光方向を変更することにより、「特定の偏光板」を変更でき、ユーザへの表示に供されるパターンが切り替えられる。
 第二偏光を吸収することによって通過を許容しない偏光部材は、吸収型偏光部材と称される。吸収型偏光部材は、例えば、ヨウ素化合物を浸透させたPVA(polyvinyl alcohol)フィルム基材を特定の方向へ延伸し、架橋処理を施すことによって形成されうる。
 第二偏光を反射することによって透過を許容しない偏光部材も知られている。このような偏光部材は、反射型偏向部材と称される。反射型偏向部材の一例として、グリッド構造を有するフィルム基材上に金属が蒸着された反射型偏向フィルムが知られている。フィルム基材は、TAC(triacetylcellulose)、COP(cyclo-olefin polymer)などによって形成されている。蒸着される金属の例としては、アルミニウム、銀、クロムなどが挙げられる。
 吸収型偏光部材に上記のようなパターンを形成する手法としては、当該パターンの形状に対応する基材の一部を除去することが知られている。他方、反射型偏光部材に上記のようなパターンを形成する手法は知られていない。
 したがって、反射型偏光部材に所望のパターンを形成できるようにすることが求められている。
 上記の要求に応えるための一態様は、偏光軸と平行な偏光成分を有する光の通過を許容し、当該偏光軸と非平行な偏光成分を有する光を反射する金属蒸着層を有する反射型偏光部材の加工方法であって、
 前記反射型偏光部材にレーザ光を照射することにより、所望のパターンに対応する形状を有するように前記金属蒸着層が昇華された領域を形成し、
 前記レーザ光の偏光方向は、前記偏光軸と非平行な向きとされる。
 上記のような構成によれば、レーザ光の照射による金属蒸着層の昇華効率を高めることができる。結果として、反射型偏光部材に所望のパターンを形成する加工を効率よく行なうことができる。
 上記のような加工方法によれば、偏光軸と平行な偏光成分を有する光の通過を許容し、当該偏光軸と非平行な偏光成分を有する光を反射する金属蒸着層を有する反射型偏光部材であって、前記偏光軸と非平行な偏光成分を有するレーザ光によって金属蒸着層が昇華された領域が所望のパターンを形成しているものが提供されうる。

 図1は、一実施形態に係る反射型偏光フィルム100の構成を例示している。反射型偏光フィルム100は、反射型偏光部材の一例である。
 反射型偏光フィルム100は、フィルム基材102と金属蒸着層104を備えている。
 フィルム基材102は、TACやCOPにより形成されている。フィルム基材102は、特定の方向に配列された高分子鎖を有している。金属蒸着層104は、フィルム基材102の一主面上にアルミニウム、銀、クロムなどの金属が蒸着されることによって形成されている。これにより、上記の高分子鎖に色素が吸着される。結果として、反射型偏光フィルム100は、ナノグリッド構造を有する。ナノグリッド構造は、それぞれ高分子鎖の方向に延びる複数のグリッドが、ナノメータ間隔で上記特定の方向に配列された構造を有している。
 反射型偏光フィルム100は、グリッドの延びる方向と直交する向きに振動する光の通過を許容する。換言すると、反射型偏光フィルム100は、複数のグリッドの配列方向と平行な偏光成分を有する光の通過を許容する。他方、反射型偏光フィルム100は、グリッドの延びる方向と平行な向きに振動する光の通過を許容しない。換言すると、反射型偏光フィルム100は、複数のグリッドの配列方向と直交する偏光成分を有する光の通過を許容しない。すなわち、反射型偏光フィルム100の偏光軸は、複数のグリッドの配列方に延びていると言える。
 上記のような構成を有する反射型偏光フィルム100に特定のパターンを形成するためには、図1に例示されるように、不図示の光源から出射されたレーザ光Lが、金属蒸着層104に照射される。
 レーザ光Lが照射された部分の金属蒸着層104は、昇華する。これにより、フィルム基材102上に金属蒸着層104が不在である領域が形成される。
 前述のように、反射型偏光フィルム100は、複数のグリッドの配列方向と直交する偏光成分を有する光の通過を許容しない。しかしながら、金属蒸着層104が不在とされた領域(すなわちフィルム基材102のみが存在する領域)に入射する光は、その偏光方向に依らず通過を許容される。当該領域を通過した光が視認されることにより、当該領域の形状に対応するパターンが表示に供される。
 したがって、レーザ光Lの照射位置が適宜に制御されることにより、所望のパターンの形状に対応するように金属蒸着層104が除去された領域が形成されうる。以降の説明においては、所望のパターンを形成するためのレーザ光Lの照射を、「パターン形成」と称する。パターン形成は、反射型偏光部材に対して行なわれる加工の一例である。
 レーザ光Lの強度は、金属蒸着層104を昇華させうるとともにフィルム基材102に反応を引き起こさない程度の熱量を供給できるように定められる。そのような熱量は、レーザ光Lの光源の出力、当該光源と反射型偏光フィルム100との距離、パターン形成の速度などに基づいて適宜に調整されうる。
 図2は、反射型偏光フィルム100に対して行なわれるパターン形成の手順を例示している。
 まず、未加工の反射型偏光フィルム100が、所定の位置に配置される(S100)。所定の位置は、所望のパターンを反射型偏光フィルム100に形成するためにレーザ光Lの照射可能を行ないうる位置である。
 所定の位置の例としては、ベルトコンベアやロボットアームなどの装置によって反射型偏光フィルム100を搬送可能な位置が挙げられる。この場合、当該装置によって反射型偏光フィルム100の所定の位置への配置がなされうる。反射型偏光フィルム100の所定の位置への配置は、手作業によって行なわれてもよい。
 続いて、所定の位置に配置された反射型偏光フィルム100に対してパターン形成が行なわれる(S102)。パターン形成は、レーザ光Lの強度、照射位置、および照射方向の少なくとも一つが適宜に制御されつつ行なわれる。
 前述のように、反射型偏光フィルム100は、自身の偏光軸と平行な偏光成分を有する光の通過を許容する一方、自身の偏光軸と直交する偏光成分を有する光の通過を許容しない。したがって、レーザ光Lの偏光方向が反射型偏光フィルム100の偏光軸と平行である場合、レーザ光Lの照射による金属蒸着層104の昇華効率が低下する。
 図3における符号Aは、このような場合を模式的に例示している。符号PAは、反射型偏光フィルム100の偏光軸を表している。符号PDは、レーザ光Lの偏光方向を表している。
 本実施形態においては、レーザ光Lの偏光方向PDが反射型偏光フィルム100の偏光軸PAと非平行となるように、パターン形成のためのレーザ光Lの照射がなされる。
 すなわち、反射型偏光フィルム100の偏光軸PAに対するレーザ光Lの偏光方向PDの角度が0°よりも大きく90°以下となるように、レーザ光Lの照射がなされる。これにより、レーザ光Lの照射による金属蒸着層104の昇華効率を高めることができる。結果として、反射型偏光フィルム100へのパターン形成を効率よく行なうことができる。
 図3における符号Bは、反射型偏光フィルム100の偏光軸PAに対するレーザ光Lの偏光方向PDの角度が90°である場合を例示している。換言すると、レーザ光Lの偏光方向PDが、反射型偏光フィルム100の偏光軸PAと直交している。
 当該角度が90°に近づくほど、レーザ光Lの照射により金属蒸着層104へ供給される熱量が大きくなる。したがって、反射型偏光フィルム100へのパターン形成効率をさらに高めることができる。
 レーザ光Lとしては、YAG(Yttrium Aluminum Garnet)レーザ光やYVO4レーザ光が使用されうる。特にYAGレーザ光の場合、金属蒸着層104による吸収効率が高いので、パターンを効率よく形成できる。
 レーザ光Lの波長は、適宜に定められうる。近赤外光であるYAGレーザ光やYVO4レーザ光に代えて、入手が容易でコスト抑制効果の高い可視レーザ光が使用されてもよい。
 上記の手法により所望のパターンが形成された反射型偏光フィルムは、例えば表示装置に搭載されうる。
 図4は、そのような表示装置1000の構成を例示している。表示装置1000は、バッテリなどの内部電源から供給される電力、あるいは商用電源などの外部電源から供給される電力によって駆動される。
 表示装置1000は、第一反射型偏光フィルム100A、第二反射型偏光フィルム100B、第一偏光部材200A、第二偏光部材200B、第一光源LS1、および第二光源LS2を備えている。
 第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aと第二反射型偏光フィルム100Bは、偏光軸の向きが互いに直交している。すなわち、第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aを通過する偏光は、第二反射型偏光フィルム100Bを通過しない。同様に、第二反射型偏光フィルム100Bを通過する偏光は、第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aを通過しない。
 第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aには、前述の加工方法により第一パターン110Aが形成されている。第一パターン110Aに入射した光は、その偏光方向に依らず、通過を許容される。第二反射型偏光フィルム100Bには、前述の加工方法により第二パターン110Bが形成されている。第二パターン110Bに入射した光は、その偏光方向に依らず、通過を許容される。
 第一偏光部材200Aと第二偏光部材200Bは、偏光軸の向きが互いに直交している。第一偏光部材200Aの偏光軸の向きは、第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aの偏光軸の向きと一致している。第二偏光部材200Bの偏光軸の向きは、第二反射型偏光フィルム100Bの偏光軸の向きと一致している。第一偏光部材200Aと第二偏光部材200Bは、吸収型偏光部材であってもよいし、反射型偏光部材であってもよい。
 第一偏光部材200Aは、第一光源LS1から出射される光の進路上に配置される。第二偏光部材200Bは、第二光源LS2から出射される光の進路上に配置される。
 第一光源LS1と第二光源LS2の各々は、少なくとも一色の光を出射する少なくとも一つの半導体発光素子により構成されうる。半導体発光素子の例としては、発光ダイオード(LED)、レーザダイオード(LD)、有機EL素子などが挙げられる。第一光源LS1と第二光源LS2の各々は、ハロゲンランプなどのランプ光源であってもよい。第一光源LS1と第二光源LS2の各々の点消灯は、表示装置1000が備えている不図示のプロセッサにより制御されうる。
 このような構成を有する表示装置1000によれば、第一光源LS1と第二光源LS2の各々の発光状態を制御することにより、以下に列挙される三通りの表示状態を実現できる。
(1)第二パターン110Bの表示
 第一光源LS1が発光状態とされ、第二光源LS2が非発光状態とされた場合、第一偏光部材200Aは、第一光源LS1から出射された光のうち、第一偏光部材200Aの偏光軸と平行な偏光成分のみを通過させる。
 第一偏光部材200Aの偏光軸の向きと第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aの偏光軸の向きは一致しているので、第一偏光部材200Aを通過した偏光は、第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aを通過する。
 第二反射型偏光フィルム100Bの偏光軸の向きと第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aの偏光軸の向きは直交しているので、第一偏光部材200Aと第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aを通過した偏光は、第二反射型偏光フィルム100Bを通過しない。しかしながら、第二反射型偏光フィルム100Bに形成された第二パターン110Bは、当該偏光の通過を許容する。
 したがって、第二パターン110Bを通過した光が、ユーザに視認されうる。換言すると、第二パターン110Bの形状が、当該ユーザへの表示に供されうる。
(2)第一パターン110Aの表示
 第一光源LS1が非発光状態とされ、第二光源LS2が発光状態とされた場合、第二偏光部材200Bは、第二光源LS2から出射された光のうち、第二偏光部材200Bの偏光軸と平行な偏光成分のみを通過させる。
 第二偏光部材200Bの偏光軸の向きと第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aの偏光軸の向きは直交しているので、第二偏光部材200Bを通過した偏光は、第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aを通過しない。しかしながら、第一反射型偏光フィルム100Aに形成された第一パターン110Aは、当該偏光の通過を許容する。
 第二偏光部材200Bの偏光軸の向きと第二反射型偏光フィルム100Bの偏光軸の向きは一致しているので、第二偏光部材200Bと第一パターン110Aを通過した偏光は、第二反射型偏光フィルム100Bを通過する。
 したがって、第一パターン110Aを通過した光が、ユーザに視認されうる。換言すると、第一パターン110Aの形状が、当該ユーザへの表示に供されうる。
(3)第一パターン110Aと第二パターン110Bの表示
 第一光源LS1と第二光源LS2の双方が発光状態とされた場合、上記(1)にて説明したように第二パターン110Bが表示に供されるとともに、上記(2)にて説明したように第一パターン110Aが表示に供される。
 したがって、各々が上記の加工方法によりパターンが形成された複数の反射型偏光フィルムを用いて、複数種のパターン表示を切り替え可能な表示装置を実現できる。
 第一反射型偏光フィルム100A、第二反射型偏光フィルム100B、第一偏光部材200A、第二偏光部材200B、第一光源LS1、および第二光源LS2は、図4に例示された位置に固定されることを要しない。所望のパターンの表示に際して図4に例示された光学的位置関係が実現できれば、第一反射型偏光フィルム100A、第二反射型偏光フィルム100B、第一偏光部材200A、第二偏光部材200B、第一光源LS1、および第二光源LS2の少なくとも一つを、その他に対して相対移動させることが可能な機構が設けられうる。
 上記の実施形態は、本開示の理解を容易にするための例示にすぎない。上記の実施形態に係る構成は、本開示の趣旨を逸脱しなければ、適宜に変更・改良されうる。
 本開示に係る加工方法の適用対象として、反射型偏光部材の一例として反射型偏光フィルムを例示した。しかしながら、本開示に係る加工方法は、反射型偏光板へのパターン形成にも適用可能である。
 本開示に係る加工方法により形成されたパターンを有する反射型偏光部材の利用例として、表示装置に搭載される場合を示した。しかしながら、本開示に係る反射型偏光部材は、呈示されるパターンが状況に応じて変化しうる種々のユーザインターフェースに適用されうる。
 本出願の記載の一部を構成するものとして、2018年6月18日に提出された日本国特許出願2018-115438号の内容が援用される。

Claims (5)

  1.  偏光軸と平行な偏光成分を有する光の通過を許容し、当該偏光軸と非平行な偏光成分を有する光を反射する金属蒸着層を有する反射型偏光部材の加工方法であって、
     前記反射型偏光部材にレーザ光を照射することにより、所望のパターンに対応する形状を有するように前記金属蒸着層が昇華された領域を形成し、
     前記レーザ光の偏光方向は、前記偏光軸と非平行な向きとされる、
    加工方法。
  2.  前記レーザ光の偏光方向は、前記偏光軸と直交する向きとされる、
    請求項1に記載の加工方法。
  3.  前記レーザ光は、YAGレーザ光である、
    請求項1または2に記載の加工方法。
  4.  前記レーザ光は、可視レーザ光である、
    請求項1または2に記載の加工方法。
  5.  偏光軸と平行な偏光成分を有する光の通過を許容し、当該偏光軸と非平行な偏光成分を有する光を反射する金属蒸着層を有する反射型偏光部材であって、
     前記偏光軸と非平行な偏光成分を有するレーザ光によって金属蒸着層が昇華された領域が、所望のパターンを形成している、
    反射型偏光部材。
