 上記のディスプレイ装置の一例として、特許文献1には、ダイクロイックミラーを使用して上記の合波を行う技術が開示されている。しかしながら、特許文献1に開示されている技術においては、ダイクロイックミラーを使用するため、ディスプレイ装置の小型化に限界があった。そのため、ウェアラブルデバイスの中でもアイウェア等のように使用者の頭部に装着する部位を含むディスプレイ装置においては、光源およびダイクロイックミラーを他の場所(使用者の腕または腰等)に固定する必要があった。
 ところで、光導波路等の方向性結合器を利用した、光学結合デバイスが知られている。ダイクロイックミラーに替えて、当該光学結合デバイスを使用すれば、ディスプレイ装置の小型化が可能であると考えられる。
 上記光学結合デバイスの一例が、特許文献2に開示されている。特許文献2に開示されている光合波器は、3つの光導波路に対してそれぞれ入射した赤色、緑色、青色の各波長の光を合波するものである。

 特許文献2に開示されている光合波器においては、コア(各光導波路)のみを通過して光合波器から出た理想的な光に対して、クラッド層を通過して光合波器から出た光が干渉する虞がある。そしてこれにより、特許文献2に開示されている光合波器においては、所望の品位の出射光を得ることができない虞があるという問題が発生する。
 すなわち、理想的にコアに導波された光aは、当該コアを通って光合波器から出る。一方、クラッド層に導波された光bは、当該光aに対する雑音成分となる。
 そして、光aに対して光bが干渉することにより、光合波器から出る光の出力の観測を良好に行うことができなくなる虞がある。また、例えば、光合波器の後段にてビーム整形を行うときに、光aに対して光bが干渉した光のビーム整形が行われ、当該ビーム整形を良好に行うことができなくなる虞がある。
 本発明の一態様は、所望の品位の出射光を得ることができる光合波器を実現することを目的とする。
 上記の課題を解決するために、本発明の一態様に係る光合波器は、複数の光源からそれぞれ得られた複数の導波光をそれぞれ導波する複数の光導波路と、上記複数の光導波路のそれぞれの出射端の集合である光出射端とを備えており、上記光出射端は、上記複数の光源からそれぞれ出射された複数の光源出射光の主光線をそれぞれ延長した複数の延長線のいずれとも重ならない位置に配置されていることを特徴としている。
 本発明の一態様によれば、所望の品位の出射光を得ることができる。

 本発明を実施するための形態について、図1~図5を参照して説明する。なお、説明の便宜上、先に説明した部材と同じ機能を有する部材については、同じ符号を付記し、その説明を省略する。
 〔実施の形態1〕
 図1は、本発明の実施の形態1、および後述する本発明の実施の形態2に係る光合波器100の構成を示す概略図である。光合波器100は、光導波路11、光導波路12、光導波路13、およびクラッド層2を備えている。
 光導波路11、光導波路12、および光導波路13は、換言すれば、光合波器100のコアである。光導波路11、光導波路12、光導波路13、およびクラッド層2の各々は、例えばシリコン酸化膜によって構成されている。クラッド層2は、省略(換言すれば、空気からなるクラッドに置換)されてもよい。光導波路11の屈折率、光導波路12の屈折率、および光導波路13の屈折率はいずれも、クラッド層2の屈折率より高い。図1においては、光導波路11、光導波路12、および光導波路13をまとめて、光導波路群(複数の光導波路)1としている。また、図1においては、光源31、光源32、および光源33をまとめて、光源群(複数の光源)3としている。また、図1においては、集光レンズ41、集光レンズ42、および集光レンズ43をまとめて、集光レンズ群(複数の集光レンズ)4としている。
 光導波路11は、光導波路11における光の入口である入射端111と、光導波路11における光の出口である出射端112とを有している。光導波路12は、光導波路12における光の入口である入射端121と、光導波路12における光の出口である出射端122とを有している。光導波路13は、光導波路13における光の入口である入射端131と、光導波路13における光の出口である出射端132とを有している。光合波器100において、出射端112、出射端122、および出射端132の集合を、光出射端142としている。
 光源31は、光源出射光51を出射する。図1においては、光源出射光51の主光線を主光線511としている。光源32は、光源出射光52を出射する。図1においては、光源出射光52の主光線を主光線521としている。光源33は、光源出射光53を出射する。図1においては、光源出射光53の主光線を主光線531としている。光源31、光源32、および光源33の各々は、例えばレーザダイオードによって構成されている。また、光源出射光51、光源出射光52、および光源出射光53の組み合わせの一例として、赤色の波長の光、緑色の波長の光、および青色の波長の光の組み合わせが挙げられる。図1においては、光源出射光51、光源出射光52、および光源出射光53をまとめて、光源出射光群(複数の光源出射光)5としている。
 光源出射光51は、集光レンズ41を通過して、集光レンズ通過光61となる。集光レンズ通過光61は、入射端111から光導波路11に対して入射する。光導波路11は、自身に入射した集光レンズ通過光61を導波する。図1においては、光導波路11が導波する光を、導波光71としている。光源出射光52は、集光レンズ42を通過して、集光レンズ通過光62となる。集光レンズ通過光62は、入射端121から光導波路12に対して入射する。光導波路12は、自身に入射した集光レンズ通過光62を導波する。図1においては、光導波路12が導波する光を、導波光72としている。光源出射光53は、集光レンズ43を通過して、集光レンズ通過光63となる。集光レンズ通過光63は、入射端131から光導波路13に対して入射する。光導波路13は、自身に入射した集光レンズ通過光63を導波する。図1においては、光導波路13が導波する光を、導波光73としている。図1においては、集光レンズ通過光61、集光レンズ通過光62、および集光レンズ通過光63をまとめて、集光レンズ通過光群(複数の集光レンズ通過光)6としている。また、図1においては、導波光71、導波光72、および導波光73をまとめて、導波光群(複数の導波光)7としている。
 光合波器100においては、導波光71、導波光72、および導波光73が合波され、光出射端142から出射される。図1においては、この光出射端142から出射された光を、出射光8としている。出射光8は、光合波器100の出射光であるとも言える。
 ここで、光出射端142は、主光線511を延長した延長線91と重ならない位置に配置されている。また、光出射端142は、主光線521を延長した延長線92と重ならない位置に配置されている。さらに、光出射端142は、主光線531を延長した延長線93と重ならない位置に配置されている。図1においては、延長線91、延長線92、および延長線93をまとめて、延長線群(複数の延長線)9としている。つまり、光出射端142は、延長線群9を構成する延長線91~延長線93のいずれとも重ならない位置に配置されている。
 光合波器100によれば、光合波器100への入射光(集光レンズ通過光群6)のうち、光導波路群1に入射し切れず、クラッド層2が導波することになった光が、光出射端142に対して届きにくくすることができる。また、当該クラッド層2が導波することになった光であって、光出射端142に対して届く光の強度を小さくすることができる。従って、光合波器100によれば、光導波路群1のみを通過して光合波器100から出た理想的な光に対する、クラッド層2を通過して光合波器100から出た光の干渉を抑制することができる。従って、光合波器100によれば、所望の品位の出射光を得ることができる。
 〔実施の形態2〕
 図1に示した光合波器100において、光出射端142は、延長線群9のうち隣接する2つの間、すなわち、延長線91と延長線92との間に配置されている。
 これにより、光合波器100において、光出射端142が、延長線91~延長線93のいずれとも重ならない位置に配置されている構成を実現することができる。
 〔実施の形態3〕
 図2は、本発明の実施の形態3に係る光合波器101の構成を示す概略図である。光合波器101と光合波器100(図1参照)との相違点は、光出射端142の配置にある。
 図2においては、互いに垂直な2方向である、X方向およびY方向を規定している。X方向は、延長線91~延長線93のそれぞれと平行な方向である。Y方向は、図2に示す面に沿っており、X方向に対して垂直な方向である。
 光導波路11、光導波路12、および光導波路13はいずれも、X方向からY方向へと略90°屈曲している。この結果、光出射端142から出射光8が出射される方向は、Y方向と略沿っており、延長線91~延長線93のそれぞれと略直交している。またこのとき、光出射端142は、入射端111、入射端121、および入射端131が形成された光合波器101の端辺1011と対向の関係にない、光合波器101の端辺1012および端辺1013のいずれか(ここでは端辺1012)に配置されている。
 光合波器101によれば、上述したクラッド層2が導波することになった光が、光出射端142に対してより届きにくい構成を実現することができる。
 なお、図2においては、延長線91~延長線93が互いに平行であるものとして説明を行ったが、延長線91~延長線93が互いに平行であることは必須でない。すなわち、延長線91~延長線93のうち少なくとも1つがX方向に沿っている(換言すれば、光出射端142から出射光8が出射される方向と略直交している)構成であればよい。
 〔実施の形態4〕
 図3の(a)は、本発明の実施の形態4に係る光合波器102の構成を示す概略図である。図3の(b)は、後述する発散角θ1~発散角θ3の求め方を説明するための図である。光合波器102と光合波器100(図1参照)との相違点は、光出射端142の配置にある。
 集光レンズ41は、入射端111の位置にて光源出射光51の光線束が最も収束するように、光源出射光51を集光する。このため、集光レンズ通過光61は、光合波器102に対して入射した後、光合波器102内で発散することとなる。図3の(a)においては、当該発散により生じる集光レンズ通過光61の発散角(全角)を発散角θ1としている。また、図3の(a)においては、発散角θ1を中心角とする扇形を扇形f1としている。集光レンズ42は、入射端121の位置にて光源出射光52の光線束が最も収束するように、光源出射光52を集光する。このため、集光レンズ通過光62は、光合波器102に対して入射した後、光合波器102内で発散することとなる。図3の(a)においては、当該発散により生じる集光レンズ通過光62の発散角(全角)を発散角θ2としている。また、図3の(a)においては、発散角θ2を中心角とする扇形を扇形f2としている。集光レンズ43は、入射端131の位置にて光源出射光53の光線束が最も収束するように、光源出射光53を集光する。このため、集光レンズ通過光63は、光合波器102に対して入射した後、光合波器102内で発散することとなる。図3の(a)においては、当該発散により生じる集光レンズ通過光63の発散角(全角)を発散角θ3としている。また、図3の(a)においては、発散角θ3を中心角とする扇形を扇形f3としている。図3の(a)においては、扇形f1、扇形f2、および扇形f3をまとめて、扇形群(複数の扇形)fとしている。そして、光出射端142は、扇形群fを構成する扇形f1~扇形f3のいずれとも重ならない位置に配置されている。
 扇形f1の内側は、光合波器102の内部で発散した集光レンズ通過光61が存在し得る領域と等しい。扇形f2の内側は、光合波器102の内部で発散した集光レンズ通過光62が存在し得る領域と等しい。扇形f3の内側は、光合波器102の内部で発散した集光レンズ通過光63が存在し得る領域と等しい。光合波器102によれば、これらの領域を避けて光出射端142が配置されているため、上述したクラッド層2が導波することになった光が、光出射端142に対してより届きにくい構成を実現することができる。
 なお、発散角θ1は、図3の(b)を参照して、下記の数式(1)~(4)によって求めることができる。発散角θ2および発散角θ3についても、発散角θ1と同様の要領で求めることができる。

である。発散角θ2を求める場合、集光レンズ41、光源出射光51、および集光レンズ通過光61を、それぞれ、集光レンズ42、光源出射光52、および集光レンズ通過光62に置換すればよいだけのことである。発散角θ3を求める場合、集光レンズ41、光源出射光51、および集光レンズ通過光61を、それぞれ、集光レンズ43、光源出射光53、および集光レンズ通過光63に置換すればよいだけのことである。
 〔実施の形態5〕
 図4は、本発明の実施の形態5に係る光合波器101´の構成を示す概略図である。光合波器101´は、見かけ上は光合波器101(図2参照)と同じ構成であるが、光合波器101の構成に加え、光導波路11~光導波路13と、光源31~光源33とのマッチングが最適化されている。
 上述したとおり、光導波路11、光導波路12、および光導波路13はいずれも、X方向からY方向へと略90°屈曲している。具体的に、光導波路(第1光導波路)11は、第1半径r1を持つ第1円c1に沿って曲げられている。また、光導波路(第2光導波路)12は、第2半径r2を持つ第2円c2に沿って曲げられている。また、光導波路(第3光導波路)13は、第3半径r3を持つ第3円c3に沿って曲げられている。第2半径r2は第1半径r1より大きく、第3半径r3は第2半径r2より大きい。
 上記構成を有する光導波路群1において、光導波路12を導波する光の波長は、光導波路11を導波する光の波長より大きいことが好ましい。また、上記構成を有する光導波路群1において、光導波路13を導波する光の波長は、光導波路12を導波する光の波長より大きいことが好ましい。具体例として、光源出射光51、光源出射光52、および光源出射光53の組み合わせが、赤色の波長の光、緑色の波長の光、および青色の波長の光の組み合わせである場合を考える。この場合、光源31が青色の波長の光(一般に、波長450nm以上495nm以下)を発光し、光導波路11が当該青色の波長の光から得られた集光レンズ通過光61を導波することが好ましい。またこの場合、光源32が緑色の波長の光(一般に、波長495nm以上570nm以下)を発光し、光導波路12が当該緑色の波長の光から得られた集光レンズ通過光62を導波することが好ましい。またこの場合、光源33が赤色の波長の光(一般に、波長620nm以上750nm以下)を発光し、光導波路13が当該赤色の波長の光から得られた集光レンズ通過光63を導波することが好ましい。
 図5は、光導波路11の曲げR(第1半径r1に相当)に対する、光導波路11における光の導波効率の関係を示すグラフである。当該導波効率としては、光導波路11と第1円c1とが重なる領域のうち最も入射端111側(図4の境界I1)に入射する光の強度に対する、当該領域のうち最も出射端112側(図4の境界I2)から出射する光の強度の割合を百分率で示している。また、図5中、Trは赤色の波長の光の特性を示しており、Tgは緑色の波長の光の特性を示しており、Tbは青色の波長の光の特性を示している。
 図5は、ある波長の光が曲げRを持った光導波路11を導波するときに、どの程度の効率で導波するのかを示したものである。例えば、図5によれば、赤色の波長の光は、曲げRが約2.5mmの場合、導波効率が約10%となる。また、図5によれば、導波効率10%を確保する場合、緑色の波長の光については曲げRが約1.1mm、青色の波長の光については約0.9mm必要である。すなわち、波長が長い光ほど導波効率を確保するためには、光導波路11の曲げRを大きくする必要がある。
 光導波路11は、曲げRが小さいと導波効率が下がる傾向となる。また、光導波路11においては、導波する光の波長が小さいほど曲げRに対する裕度が上がり、例えば曲げRが2mmである場合、青色の波長の光の導波効率(Tb)は約100%、緑色の波長の光の導波効率(Tg)は約90%となるが、赤色の波長の光の導波効率(Tr)は数%と低い。光導波路12および光導波路13についても、光導波路11と同様の、曲げR(それぞれ、第2半径r2および第3半径r3に相当)に対する、光の導波効率の特性を有している。
 よって、できるだけ曲げRを大きくすることができる光導波路13が赤色の波長の光を導波することで、効率的な光合波器101´を構成することができる。
 〔まとめ〕
 本発明の態様1に係る光合波器は、複数の光源(光源群3)からそれぞれ得られた複数の導波光(導波光群7)をそれぞれ導波する複数の光導波路(光導波路群1)と、上記複数の光導波路のそれぞれの出射端の集合である光出射端とを備えており、上記光出射端は、上記複数の光源からそれぞれ出射された複数の光源出射光(光源出射光群5)の主光線をそれぞれ延長した複数の延長線(延長線群9)のいずれとも重ならない位置に配置されている。
 上記の構成によれば、光合波器への入射光のうち、複数の光導波路に入射し切れず、クラッド(クラッド層2)が導波することになった光が、光出射端に対して届きにくくすることができる。また、当該クラッドが導波することになった光であって、光出射端に対して届く光の強度を小さくすることができる。従って、上記の構成によれば、複数の光導波路のみを通過して光合波器から出た理想的な光に対する、クラッドを通過して光合波器から出た光の干渉を抑制することができる。従って、上記の構成によれば、所望の品位の出射光を得ることができる。
 本発明の態様2に係る光合波器は、上記態様1において、上記光出射端は、上記複数の延長線のうち隣接する2つの間(延長線91と延長線92との間)に配置されている。
 上記の構成によれば、光出射端が、複数の延長線のいずれとも重ならない位置に配置されている構成を実現することができる。
 本発明の態様3に係る光合波器は、上記態様1において、上記複数の延長線のうち少なくとも1つと、上記光出射端から光が出射される方向とが略直交している。
 上記の構成によれば、クラッドが導波することになった光が、光出射端に対してより届きにくい構成を実現することができる。
 本発明の態様4に係る光合波器は、上記態様1から3のいずれかにおいて、上記光出射端は、上記複数の光源出射光がそれぞれ集光レンズを通過して得られた、複数の集光レンズ通過光(集光レンズ通過光群6)が上記光合波器の内部で発散するときの発散角(全角)をそれぞれ中心角とした複数の扇形(扇形群f)のいずれにも含まれない位置に配置されている。
 複数の扇形の内側は、それぞれ、光合波器の内部で発散した複数の集光レンズ通過光が存在し得る領域と等しい。上記の構成によれば、これらの領域を避けて光出射端が配置されているため、クラッドが導波することになった光が、光出射端に対してより届きにくい構成を実現することができる。
 本発明の態様5に係る光合波器は、上記態様1から4のいずれかにおいて、上記複数の光導波路は、第1半径を持つ第1円に沿って曲げられた第1光導波路(光導波路11)と、当該第1半径より大きな第2半径を持つ第2円に沿って曲げられた第2光導波路(光導波路12)とを有しており、上記第2光導波路を導波する光の波長は、上記第1光導波路を導波する光の波長より大きい。
 光導波路は、曲げR(第1光導波路における第1半径、第2光導波路における第2半径)が小さいと導波効率が下がる傾向となる。また、光導波路においては、導波する光の波長が小さいほど曲げRに対する裕度が上がる。上記の構成によれば、曲げRを大きくすることができる第2光導波路が波長の大きい光を導波することで、効率的な光合波器を構成することができる。
 本発明は上述した各実施形態に限定されるものではなく、請求項に示した範囲で種々の変更が可能であり、異なる実施形態にそれぞれ開示された技術的手段を適宜組み合わせて得られる実施形態についても本発明の技術的範囲に含まれる。さらに、各実施形態にそれぞれ開示された技術的手段を組み合わせることにより、新しい技術的特徴を形成することができる。

Claims (5)

  1.  複数の光源からそれぞれ得られた複数の導波光をそれぞれ導波する複数の光導波路と、
     上記複数の光導波路のそれぞれの出射端の集合である光出射端とを備えており、
     上記光出射端は、上記複数の光源からそれぞれ出射された複数の光源出射光の主光線をそれぞれ延長した複数の延長線のいずれとも重ならない位置に配置されていることを特徴とする光合波器。
  2.  上記光出射端は、上記複数の延長線のうち隣接する2つの間に配置されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光合波器。
  3.  上記複数の延長線のうち少なくとも1つと、上記光出射端から光が出射される方向とが略直交していることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光合波器。
  4.  上記光出射端は、上記複数の光源出射光がそれぞれ集光レンズを通過して得られた、複数の集光レンズ通過光が上記光合波器の内部で発散するときの発散角(全角)をそれぞれ中心角とした複数の扇形のいずれにも含まれない位置に配置されていることを特徴とする請求項1から3のいずれか1項に記載の光合波器。
  5.  上記複数の光導波路は、第1半径を持つ第1円に沿って曲げられた第1光導波路と、当該第1半径より大きな第2半径を持つ第2円に沿って曲げられた第2光導波路とを有しており、
     上記第2光導波路を導波する光の波長は、上記第1光導波路を導波する光の波長より大きいことを特徴とする請求項1から4のいずれか1項に記載の光合波器。
