- (Liquid crystal material) Nematic liquid crystal is used as the liquid crystal material.
- the liquid crystal material includes a chiral agent, and the chiral pitch p of the liquid crystal molecules can be adjusted by adjusting the content of the chiral agent.
- the chiral pitch is a distance when the liquid crystal molecules are twisted by one period (360 °) in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer 8.
- a chiral agent is a low molecular compound having an optically active site, and induces a helical structure in a nematic liquid crystal.

- FIG. 5 is a diagram for explaining a method of measuring the chiral pitch p.
- FIG. 5A is a cross-sectional view parallel to the thickness direction of the wedge-shaped cell 30 used for measurement
- FIG. 5B is a state in which the wedge-shaped cell 30 is viewed in plan and the chiral pitch p is measured. It shows a striped pattern due to the difference in brightness that is sometimes observed.
- the wedge-shaped cell 30 includes two glass plates 31 and 32 and a table 33 that is disposed between the two glass plates 31 and 32 and forms a wedge shape.
- the cross section parallel to the thickness direction of the wedge-shaped cell 30 has a wedge shape.
- the wedge-shaped cell 30 has a triangular shape as shown in FIG.
- the wedge shape means a shape that is wide at one end and gradually narrows as it reaches the other end, and is a shape including a triangular shape or a trapezoidal shape.
- a horizontal alignment film (not shown) is formed on the surface 32 a on the liquid crystal side of the glass plate 32 that becomes the bottom surface of the wedge-shaped cell 30. Therefore, when the guest-host type liquid crystal material is enclosed between the two glass plates 31 and 32 of the wedge-shaped cell 30, the liquid crystal molecules are aligned along the alignment direction of the alignment film, and depending on the height of the cell. Turn.
- the measurement of the dimension of the stripe width a is performed three times, and the average value is defined as the chiral pitch p.
- FIG. 5 shows an example in which the liquid crystal material is sealed in the entire space formed by the glass plates 31 and 32 and the base 33.
- the present invention is not limited to this, and two stripes necessary for measurement are observed. If the amount of liquid crystal material is sealed, the chiral pitch p can be measured.
- the chiral pitch p is preferably 0.5 ⁇ m or more.
- a phenomenon occurs in which light having a value obtained by multiplying the average refractive index n of the liquid crystal material by the chiral pitch p is selectively reflected.
- the chiral pitch p is less than 0.5 ⁇ m, this phenomenon causes the light of a specific wavelength in the visible light region to be selectively reflected, so that the light control film 1 appears to be colored in a specific color. There is a possibility that the light transmittance of the optical film 1 is lowered. Therefore, this chiral pitch p preferably satisfies the above range.
- the thickness (cell gap) d of the liquid crystal layer 8 is preferably 2 ⁇ m or more and 20 ⁇ m or less. If the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer 8 is less than 2 ⁇ m, it is difficult to manufacture the light control film 1 having such a liquid crystal layer 8, and the yield during production of the light control film 1 is greatly reduced, which is not preferable. On the other hand, when the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer 8 is greater than 20 ⁇ m, the amount of liquid crystal material used is increased, and the material cost of the light control film 1 is increased, which is not preferable. Therefore, the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer 8 is preferably in the above range.
- the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer 8 When foreign matter is mixed into the liquid crystal layer 8, when the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer 8 is small, the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer 8 is smaller than the size of the foreign matter, and the liquid crystal layer 8 expands only at the location where the foreign matter is mixed. For example, the appearance of the light control film 1 often deteriorates. However, if the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer 8 is sufficiently large, such deterioration of the appearance can be reduced if the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer 8 is larger than the size of the foreign matter.
- the liquid crystal material used in the liquid crystal layer 8 has a refractive index anisotropy, the refractive index for ordinary ray of the liquid crystal material n o, a refractive index for extraordinary ray in the case of the n e, the liquid crystal material
- the refractive index anisotropy ⁇ n of the liquid crystal material is preferably 0.05 or more in order to obtain a sufficient haze value in the haze state (haze mode) in the light control film 1.
- the refractive index anisotropy ⁇ n of the liquid crystal material can be calculated by the following method, for example. First, a liquid crystal material not containing a dichroic dye is prepared, and a light control film 1 for measurement provided with the liquid crystal layer 8 is prepared. The liquid crystal molecules are tilted (if the normally black structure is used). , A state where no voltage is applied, or a state where a voltage is applied in the case of a normally white structure). Then, the phase difference Re and the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer 8 in this state are measured.
- an AC voltage of 60 Hz (sine wave) is applied to the light control film 1 for measurement by an AC power supply device (eK-FGJ manufactured by Matsusada Precision Co., Ltd.).
- the phase difference Re can be measured with a phase difference measuring device (RETS-1200VA manufactured by Otsuka Electronics Co., Ltd.) or the like.
- the phase difference Re is expressed by the following equation, where the refractive index anisotropy ⁇ n of the liquid crystal material and the thickness (cell gap) of the liquid crystal layer 8 is d.
- Re ⁇ n ⁇ d Therefore, the refractive index anisotropy ⁇ n of the liquid crystal material can be calculated by the following formula.
- ⁇ n Re / d
- the light control film 1 of this embodiment has a normally black structure.
- the normally black structure is a structure in which the transmittance is minimized when a voltage is not applied to the liquid crystal, resulting in a black screen. That is, in this embodiment, the liquid crystal is p (positive) type, no voltage is applied to the light control film 1, and when the liquid crystal molecules are horizontally aligned, the dichroic dye is also horizontally aligned. The visible light transmittance of 1 is reduced. Conversely, when a voltage is applied to the light control film 1 and the liquid crystal molecules are vertically aligned, the dichroic dye is also vertically aligned, and the visible light transmittance of the light control film 1 is increased.
- haze value is a ratio of diffuse transmittance (diffuse light transmittance) in total light transmittance. That is, it is an index relating to the transparency of the light control film 1 and represents turbidity (cloudiness).
- the light control film 1 is in a cloudy state (haze state).
- the liquid crystal molecules and the dichroic dyes are light controlled in the longitudinal direction when no voltage is applied to the light control film 1 (liquid crystal layer 8).
- the film 1 is tilted and turned in the surface direction (direction orthogonal to the thickness direction), and is in a dark state (light-shielding state) with low transmittance.
- the major axis direction of both the liquid crystal molecules and the dichroic dye is parallel to the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer 8, and the transmittance It becomes a high bright state (translucent state).
- the light control film 1 When a voltage between the voltage in the dark state and the voltage in the bright state is applied to the light control film 1 (liquid crystal layer 8), the major axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules and the dichroic dye is the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer 8. Therefore, the light control film 1 is in a cloudy state (haze state).
- the scale on the left vertical axis represents the transmittance
- the scale on the right vertical axis represents the haze value
- the horizontal axis represents the applied voltage.
- the electric field in the liquid crystal layer 8 is changed by changing the voltage, and the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules is changed between the horizontal alignment and the vertical alignment.
- the orientation direction of the dichroic dye is changed in conjunction with the change in the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules, whereby the transmittance of incident light is controlled.
- the haze value also changes due to voltage fluctuation.
- the continuous line in FIG. 2 shows the transmittance
- a broken line shows a haze value.
- the maximum value of the voltage applied to the electrode of the light control film 1 is 10 V.
- the maximum value of the voltage applied to the electrode is not limited to this, and the light control film 1 Depending on the size of the light, the design value of the desired transmittance, the usage environment of the light control film 1, etc., it may be appropriately selected.
- a voltage of 60 Hz (rectangular wave) is applied to the light control film 1 by an AC power supply device (eK-FGJ manufactured by Matsusada Precision Co., Ltd.).
- the voltage shown on the horizontal axis is a set value in the AC power supply device when a voltage is applied to the light control film 1.
- the haze value and transmittance of the light control film 1 were measured using a haze meter (HM-150, manufactured by Murakami Color Research Laboratory).
- the measuring method of a haze value is based on JISK7136
- permeability is based on JISK7361.
- the thickness (cell gap) d of the liquid crystal layer 8 of the light control film 1 corresponds to the height of the spacer 12 of the liquid crystal layer 8 (the dimension of the spacer 12 in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer 8) and can be measured by various measuring instruments. It is.
- the spacer 12 is a spherical bead spacer as in this embodiment, its height (thickness d of the liquid crystal layer 8) can be measured with a microscope such as SEM (scanning electron microscope).
- the spacer 12 is columnar, the height can be measured with an optical interference type shape measuring instrument.
- the method for measuring the chiral pitch p is as described above.
- the sample of the light control film 1 used for measuring the haze value and transmittance by applying a voltage has a square shape with a size of 70 mm in length and 70 mm in width in plan view. Moreover, the sample of the light control film 1 used for the measurement uses a guest-host type liquid crystal material as the liquid crystal material of the liquid crystal layer 8 and has a normally black structure.
- Transmittance The transmittance increases as the voltage increases.
- Haze value The haze value rises once at a voltage of about 3 V and has a peak value of about 10% at the maximum. Thereafter, when the voltage increases and the transmittance starts to increase, the haze value decreases.
- the twist is a rotation (twist) angle of liquid crystal molecules between the first alignment film 13 and the second alignment film 17.
- Transmittance The transmittance increases as the voltage increases. However, the amount of increase is less than (1).
- Haze value The haze value rises once at a voltage of about 3.9 V and has a peak value of about 18% at maximum. Thereafter, when the voltage increases and the transmittance starts to increase, the haze value decreases.
- Transmittance The transmittance increases as the voltage increases. However, the amount of increase is less than (2).
- Haze value The haze value rises once at a voltage of about 4.0 V and has a peak value of about 23% at the maximum. Thereafter, when the voltage increases and the transmittance starts to increase, the haze value decreases.
- Transmittance The transmittance increases as the voltage increases. However, the amount of increase is less than (3).
- Haze value The haze value once rises at a voltage of about 4.1 V and has a peak value of about 15% at maximum. Thereafter, when the voltage increases and the transmittance starts to increase, the haze value decreases.
- Transmittance When d / p is 2.7 (twisted 960 degrees) Transmittance: The transmittance increases as the voltage increases. However, the amount of increase is less than (4). Haze value: At a voltage of about 5.8 V, the haze value once rises and has a peak value of about 22% at the maximum. Thereafter, when the voltage increases and the transmittance starts to increase, the haze value decreases.
- the haze value has a peak value in a region where the voltage applied to the electrode is an intermediate value (an intermediate voltage between the maximum voltage and the minimum voltage). That is, it can be seen that the haze value has a range in which the haze value increases. - the voltage applied to the electrode is a voltage with the maximum transmittance and a voltage with the minimum voltage.
- the haze value has a peak value, that is, a range in which the haze value increases in a region having an intermediate value therebetween.
- 0.9 ⁇ d / p ⁇ 1.5 and a voltage of about 1.5 to 2.5 V is set as a haze region. Then, when the haze region is selected with the adjustment knob, the voltage applied to the electrode becomes 1.5 to 2.5 V, and the light control film 1 can be brought into the haze state.

- the position of the adjustment knob 23 is the other end side of the rotatable region (the “bright” side on the left side in the figure)
- the voltage applied to the electrode is maximized and the transmittance of the light control film 1 is also maximized (bright state).
- the light control film 1 shown in the first embodiment is used as the light control film 1 included in the light control system 20, and 10 V is set as the maximum value of the voltage applied to the electrodes.
- the maximum value of the voltage applied to the electrode will be described with reference to an example that can be set, depending on the size of the light control film 1, the design value of the desired transmittance, the usage environment of the light control film 1, etc. It may be selected as appropriate, and may be a value larger than 10V or a small value.

Thereby, at the time of switching between “dark” and “bright” of the light control film 1, the appearance of the external scenery through the light control film 1 does not change instantaneously, but the cloudy state (haze state) is changed. Since it is visually recognized by the observer so as to change over time, it is possible to soften the impression of changes in the appearance of the external scenery through the light control film 1 at the time of switching.
- the response time that is the time until) can be measured by the following method. - the minimum voltage value is 0 V
- the maximum voltage value can be appropriately selected according to the size of the light control film 1 and the like.
- the light control film 1 has a normally black structure.
- the maximum voltage value is 20 V (60 Hz, rectangular wave).
- FIG. 7 is a diagram showing the response time t in the light control film 1 having a normally black structure.
- an oscilloscope screen is shown, the vertical axis represents voltage (V), and the horizontal axis represents time (milliseconds: ms).
- the light control film 1 Since the light control film 1 has a normally black structure, when the voltage applied to the electrode is a minimum voltage value (here, 0 V), the light control film 1 is in a dark state (light-shielded state) and has a maximum voltage value (here Is 20 V), the light control film 1 is in a bright state (translucent state). From the rise of the signal at the time of changing from the dark state to the light state by the switching of the voltage value (at the time of changing from the minimum voltage value to the maximum voltage value) until 90% of the maximum value of the signal (90% of the maximum voltage value) The response time t can be obtained by reading the time.
- a minimum voltage value here, 0 V
- Is 20 V maximum voltage value
- the liquid crystal material used for the liquid crystal layer 8 of the light control film 1 has dielectric anisotropy (dielectric anisotropy), and the dielectric constant in the major axis direction of liquid crystal molecules is ⁇ //
- of the liquid crystal material is preferably 100 or less, more preferably 60 or less, and 30 or less. More preferably it is.
- liquid crystal layer 8 When a plurality of types of liquid crystal materials are used in the liquid crystal layer 8, it is preferable that those liquid crystal molecules having the smallest absolute value of dielectric anisotropy

- C ⁇ r ⁇ ⁇ 0 ⁇ S / d Therefore, ⁇ r is expressed by the following equation.
- the dielectric constant ⁇ r in a state where the liquid crystal molecules stand in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer 8 from the above formula. That is, the dielectric constant ⁇ // in the major axis direction of the liquid crystal and the dielectric constant ⁇ r when the liquid crystal molecules are tilted , that is, the dielectric constant ⁇ ⁇ in the minor axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules can be calculated.
- the voltage V c of the light management film 1 the voltage across the resistance and V R, when the voltage of the AC power supply and V E, represented by the following formula.
- V c ⁇ (V E 2 ⁇ V R 2 )
- the voltage V R applied to the resistor, obtained by the voltage V E of the AC power supply is measured by the unillustrated tester (custom manufactured by CDM-2000D Corporation).
- the voltage V c related to the light control film 1 is also expressed by the following equation.
- V c I c ⁇ 1 / (2 ⁇ ⁇ f ⁇ C) Therefore, the capacitance C of the liquid crystal layer 8 is obtained by the following equation.
- f 60 Hz
- I c V R / R 1
- R 1 10 k ⁇ .
- the refractive index anisotropy ⁇ n of the liquid crystal molecules is preferably 0.05 or more in order to obtain a sufficient haze value in the haze state (haze mode) in the light control film 1. .
- the peak value of the haze value in the haze state is preferably 5% or more, and preferably 8% or more. More preferably, it is 10% or more.
- the voltage applied to the light control film 1 is changed from the maximum value to the minimum value.
- the time required for the transmittance of the light control film 1 to reach a value corresponding to 90% of the maximum value from the minimum value (The response time is preferably 16 milliseconds or more, more preferably 100 milliseconds or more, which is the time required to reach the transmittance corresponding to 90% of the transmittance in the light-transmitting state. Preferably, it is 200 milliseconds or more.
- the transmittance equivalent to 90% of the transmittance in the light-transmitting state is changed from the transmittance in the light-shielding state by the same device as in the case of the above-described normally black structure.
- the response time which is the time to reach, can be determined.
- the light control film 1 has a normally white structure, and the maximum voltage value applied to the electrode of the light control film 1 by the function generator is 10 V (60 Hz, rectangular wave) as an example.
- the maximum voltage value can be appropriately selected according to the size of the light control film 1 and the like.
- the light control film 1 has a normally white structure, when the voltage applied to the electrode is a minimum voltage value (0 V in this case), the light control film 1 is in a bright state (translucent state), and the maximum voltage When it is a value (here 10V), the light control film 1 is a dark state (light-shielding state). And by reading the time from the rise of the signal when changing from the dark state to the bright state by switching the voltage value to 90% of the maximum value of the signal intensity, the transmittance of the light control film 1 from the light shielding state is read. It is possible to obtain a response time that is a time required to reach a transmittance corresponding to 90% of the transmittance in the light-transmitting state.
- the peak value of the haze value in the haze state is preferably 1.5% or more, more preferably 5% or more, and 10%. More preferably, it is the above.
- the haze state between the dark state and the bright state can be easily seen by the observer, and the impression when switching from “dark” to “light” becomes softer and darker.
- the stimulus received by the sudden change in brightness from the state to the bright state can be reduced.
- the peak value of the preferred haze value when the light control film 1 has a normally white structure is smaller than that when it has a normally black structure. This is because the transmittance in the haze state is also increased, so that the haze state is more visible.
- the base materials 6 and 15 showed the example which is a resin-made film-like member, it is not restricted to this,
- a base material 6 and 15 for example, a glass-like sheet shape or It is good also considering the light control film 1 as a light control member which is not a film form using a plate-shaped member.

この光二量化型の材料については、「M.Schadt, K.Schmitt, V. Kozinkov and V. Chigrinov : Jpn. J. Appl.Phys., 31, 2155(1992)」、「M. Schadt, H. Seiberle and A. Schuster : Nature, 381, 212(1996)」等に開示されている。
2×a:L=p:H
p=2×a×H/L
Δn=ne-no
Re=Δn×d
Δn=Re/d
Δε=ε//-ε⊥
C=εr×ε0×S/d
εr=C×d/(S×ε0)
Vc=√(VE 2-VR 2)
Vc=Ic×1/(2π×f×C)
C=Ic×1/(2π×f×Vc)
