Abstract

본 발명은 이차 전지의 제조 방법에 대한 것이다. 더욱 상세하게는 다수의 바이셀 타입 및/또는 모노셀 타입인 단위셀을 적층하여 전극 조립체를 제조하는 방법에 대한 것이다. 본 발명에 따른 전극 조립체 제조 방법은 롤 라미네이션 공정에 의해 단위셀에 발생된 만곡을 용이하게 제거하고 간단한 공정에 의해 평면 형상의 전극 조립체를 제조할 수 있는 효과가 있다. 또한 상기 방법에 의해 전극 조립체를 제조하는 경우 전극 조립체를 구성하는 단위셀들간의 만곡이 서로 상쇄되므로 전극 조립체에서 평면 형상의 유지 기간이 현저하게 연장되는 효과가 있다.

Description

이차 전지용 전극 조립체 제조 방법
본 출원은 2014년 12월 3일에 출원된 한국특허출원 제10-2014-0172401호에 기초한 우선권을 주장한다. 본 발명은 이차 전지용 전극 조립체 및 이의 제조 방법에 대한 것이다. 더욱 상세하게는 다수의 바이셀 타입 및/또는 모노셀 타입인 단위셀을 적층하여 전극 조립체를 제조하는 방법에 대한 것이다.
모바일 기기에 대한 기술 개발과 수요가 증가함에 따라 에너지원으로서의 전지의 수요가 급격히 증가하고 있고, 그에 따라 다양한 요구에 부응할 수 있는 전지에 대한 많은 연구가 행해지고 있다. 대표적으로 전지의 형상 면에서는 얇은 두께로 휴대폰 등과 같은 제품들에 적용될 수 있는 각형 이차전지와 파우치형 이차전지에 대한 수요가 높고, 재료 면에서는 높은 에너지 밀도, 방전 전압, 출력 안정성 등의 장점을 가진 리튬이온 전지, 리튬이온 폴리머 전지 등과 같은 리튬 이차전지에 대한 수요가 높다.
또한, 이차전지는 양극/분리막/음극 구조의 전극조립체가 어떠한 구조로 이루어져 있는지에 따라 분류되기도 하는 바, 대표적으로는, 긴 시트형의 양극들과 음극들을 분리막이 개재된 상태에서 권취한 구조의 젤리-롤(권취형) 전극조립체, 소정 크기의 단위로 절취한 다수의 양극과 음극들을 분리막을 개재한 상태로 순차적으로 적층한 스택형(적층형) 전극조립체, 소정 단위의 양극과 음극들을 분리막을 개재한 상태로 적층한 바이셀(Bi-cell) 또는 모노셀(Monol-cell)들을 분리필름 등으로 권취한 구조의 스택/폴딩형 전극조립체 등을 들 수 있다.
최근에는, 스택형 전극조립체를 알루미늄 라미네이트 시트의 파우치형 전지케이스에 내장한 구조의 파우치형 전지가, 낮은 제조비, 작은 중량, 용이한 형태 변형 등을 이유로, 많은 관심을 모으고 있고 또한 그것의 사용량이 점차적으로 증가하고 있다.
도 1은 종래 스택형 전지의 전극 조립체를 제조하기 위한 모노셀 제조 공정을 개략적으로 도시한 것이다. 최소 단위의 모노셀은 통상적으로 분리막/제1 전극/분리막/제2 전극을 포함한다. 도 1과 같이 분리막(11)/제1 전극(12)/분리막(11)/제2 전극(13)이 순차적으로 적층된 후 롤 라미네이션 공정에 따른 가열 및 가압에 의해 각 층이 층간 접착되고 커터(C1, C2, C3)에 의해 적절하게 절단되어 단위 모노셀이 제조된다. 통상적인 바이셀 제조 공정도 전극과 분리막의 적층 순서에 차이가 있으나 상기 모노셀 제조 과정과 유사한 형태로 제조된다. 그런데 상기 롤 라미네이션 공정을 통해 제조된 모노셀 및/또는 바이셀은 롤러를 통과하는 과정에서 가하여진 열 및 압력에 의해 벤딩되어 평면이 아닌 만곡된 형상을 갖게 되는 단점이 있다. 또한 도 1에 도시된 바와 같이 분리막이나 전극판들은 권취되어 보관되다가 적층 전에 언와인드(unwind)되어 롤 라미네이션에 제공되는데 권취상태에서 가하여진 변형이 롤 라미네이션에 의해 충분히 제거되지 않을시에 이러한 만곡 현상이 강화되어 나타날 수 있다. 스택형 전지는 보통 평면 타입의 각형 전지를 제조하는데 사용되므로 이러한 만곡형 모노셀 및/또는 바이셀을 평면 형상으로 변형시키기 위한 추가 공정이 필요하다.
도 2는 종래 사용되는 스택형 전지 제조 공정을 개략적으로 도시한 것이다. 우선, 벤딩된 단위셀(10)(모노셀 및/또는 바이셀)을 만곡된 방향이 동일하게 되도록 포개어 적층하고 테이핑(20) 하여 고정시켜 전극 조립체(100)를 제조한다. 상기 전극 조립체는 만곡된 형태를 유지하고 있다. 이후 상기 만곡된 평판형 지그(J)를 이용하여 상기 전극 조립체의 상/하부를 동시에 가압하여 전극 조립체를 평판형으로 변형시킨다. 그러나, 적층된 단위셀들에서 만곡 방향이 동일하므로 만곡부에 잔존된 변형 응력은 단위셀들 사이에 서로 보강되므로 전극 조립체에서 만곡을 제거하는 것이 용이하지 않은 문제점이 있다.
이에 본 발명은 상기와 같은 종래 제반 문제점을 해결하기 위해 제안된 것으로, 본 발명의 목적은 롤 라미네이션 공정에 의해 벤딩된 단위셀들을 적층하여 제조한 전극 조립체의 만곡을 제거하기 위한 효과적인 방법을 제공하는 것이다. 본 발명의 다른 목적 및 장점들은 하기 설명에 의해서 이해될 수 있을 것이다. 또한, 본 발명의 목적 및 장점들은 특허청구범위에서 기재되는 수단 또는 방법, 및 이의 조합에 의해 실현될 수 있음을 쉽게 알 수 있을 것이다.
본 발명은 상기 기술적 과제를 해결하기 위한 것으로서, 전기화학소자용 평판형 전극 조립체를 제조하는 방법을 제공한다.
본 발명의 제1 측면은 C 자 형으로 만곡되어 소정의 곡률 반경을 갖는 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체를 이들의 오목면이 서로 대향하도록 포개어 놓는 단계(S1); 및 상기 포개어진 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체들을 가압하여 상기 단위셀 적층체에서 만곡을 제거하는 단계(S2);를 포함하는 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법인 것이다.
본 발명의 제2 측면은, 상기 제1 측면에 있어서, 상기 (S1)에서 제1 단위셀 적층체의 곡률 반경(R1)은 제2 단위셀 적층체의 곡률 반경(R2)의 -10% 내지 +10% 인 것이다.
본 발명의 제3 측면은, 상기 제1 또는 제2 측면에 있어서, 상기 (S1)에서 각각의 단위셀 적층체의 만곡 중심축은 단위셀 적층체의 대향면에 대한 수직 평면에 위치한 것이다.
본 발명의 제4 측면은, 상기 제1 내지 제3 측면 중 어느 하나에 있어서, 상기 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체가 각각 모노셀 및/또는 바이셀인 것이다.
본 발명의 제5 측면은, 상기 제1 내지 제4 측면 중 어느 하나에 있어서, 상기 평판형 전극 조립체가 바이셀 타입 및/또는 모노셀 타입인 것이다.
본 발명의 제6 측면은, 상기 제1 내지 제5 측면 중 어느 하나에 있어서, 상기 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체는 각각 1개의 단위 모노셀 또는 단위 바이셀이거나, 각각 2개 이상의 단위 모노셀 또는 단위 바이셀이 적층되어 형성된 것이다.
또한, 본 발명의 제7 측면은, 상기 제1 내지 제6 측면 중 어느 하나에 있어서, 상기 평판형 전극 조립체는 복수개의 전극과 복수개의 분리막이 교번하여 적층되어 있으며, 두 개의 반대 전극 사이에 분리막이 개재되어 적층된 모노셀 타입 또는 바이셀 타입인 것이다.
본 발명의 제8 측면은, 상기 제7 측면에 있어서, 상기 평판형 전극 조립체는 최상단부에 배치된 전극과 최하단부에 배치된 전극의 극성이 서로 동일한 바이셀 타입인 것이다.
본 발명의 제9 측면은, 상기 제7 측면에 있어서, 상기 평판형 전극 조립체는 최상단부에 배치된 전극과 최하단부에 배치된 전극의 극성이 서로 반대인 모노셀 타입인 것이다.
또한, 본 발명의 제10 측면은, 제1 내지 제9 측면 중 어느 하나에 있어서, 상기 (S1)에서 제1 단위셀 적층체와 제2 단위셀 적층체 사이에 곡률 반경이 무한대인 평면상의 제3 단위셀 적층체가 삽입되는 것이다.
본 발명의 제11 측면은 상기 제10 측면에 있어서, 상기 제3 단위셀 적층체가 모노셀 타입 또는 바이셀 타입인 것이다.
본 발명에 따른 전극 조립체 제조 방법은 롤 라미네이션 공정에 의해 단위셀에 발생된 만곡을 용이하게 제거하고 간단한 공정에 의해 평면 형상의 전극 조립체를 제조할 수 있는 효과가 있다. 또한 상기 방법에 의해 전극 조립체를 제조하는 경우 전극 조립체를 구성하는 단위셀들간의 만곡이 서로 상쇄되므로 전극 조립체에서 평면 형상의 유지 기간이 현저하게 연장되는 효과가 있다.
첨부된 도면은 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 예시하는 것이며, 상세한 설명과 함께 본 발명의 원리를 설명하는 것으로, 발명의 범위가 이에 국한되는 것은 아니다. 한편, 본 명세서에 수록된 도면에서의 요소의 형상, 크기, 축척 또는 비율 등은 보다 명확한 설명을 강조하기 위해서 과장될 수 있다.
도 1은 종래 단위셀을 제조하는 롤 라미네이션 공정을 도식화하여 나타낸 것이다.
도 2는 종래 만곡된 형상의 단위셀을 적층하여 전극 조립체를 제조하는 공정을 도식화하여 나타낸 것이다.

도 4는 본원 발명의 일 실시양태에 따른 전극 조립체 제조 방법을 개략적으로 도식화하여 나타낸 것이다.

도 8 및 도 9는 평면 형상의 제3 단위셀 적층체를 제1 단위셀 적층체와 제2 단위셀 적층체 사이에 개재하여 전극 조립체를 제조하는 실시양태를 도시한 것이다.
도 10은 제조된 전극 조립체를 테이핑 하여 고정하는 실시양태를 도시한 것이다.
이하 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본원 발명을 상세하게 설명한다. 본 명세서 및 특허청구범위에 사용된 용어 또는 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 발명을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다.
본 발명은 모노셀 및/또는 바이셀 형태의 단위셀을 적층하여 전극 조립체를 제조하는 방법에 대한 것으로서, 상세하게는 롤 라미네이션 공정에 의해 만곡된 형상의 단위셀들을 적층하여 평면 형상의 전극 조립체를 제조 하는 방법에 대한 것이다.
본 발명에 있어서, 상기 전극 조립체는 양극과 음극이 분리막을 개재하여 적층된 것으로 리튬 이온 이차 전지와 같은 전기화학소자에 사용될 수 있다.
도 1 및 2를 참조하면, 상기에서 상술한 바와 같이 전극 조립체에 포함되는 단위셀들은 통상적으로 롤 라미네이션(roll lamination) 공정에 의해 제조되며 이때 가하여 지는 열 및 압력에 의해 상기 단위셀들은 만곡된 형태로 제조된다. 상기 만곡된 단위셀들은 일정한 만곡축을 중심으로 만곡되는데 상기 만곡축(X)은 일반적으로 롤러의 진행방향에 대해 수직인 방향이다. 도 3은 각 단위셀에서 만곡축(X)이 롤러 진행 방향(P)에 대해 수직으로 형성되어 있음을 도식화하여 나타낸 것이다.
도 4는 본원 발명에 따른 전극 조립체 제조방법을 개략적으로 도식화하여 나타낸 것이다. 이하 본 명세서에 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본 발명을 상세하게 설명한다.
도 4를 참조하면, 우선 C 자형으로 만곡되어 소정의 곡률 반경을 갖는 제1 단위셀 적층체(210)가 준비된다(4a). 상기 단위셀 적층체는 모노셀 또는 바이셀 타입의 1개의 단위셀이거나 모노셀 및/또는 바이셀 타입의 단위셀 2개 이상이 동일한 만곡 방향으로 적층되어 있는 것일 수 있다.
다음으로 C 자형으로 만곡되어 소정의 곡률 반경을 갖는 제2 단위셀 적층체(220)가 준비된다(4b). 상기 제2 단위셀 적층체도 제1 단위셀 적층체와 마찬가지로 모노셀 또는 바이셀 타입의 1개의 단위셀이거나 모노셀 및/또는 바이셀 타입의 단위셀 2개 이상이 동일한 만곡 방향으로 적층되어 있는 것일 수 있다.
상기 제1 단위셀 적층체 및 제2 단위셀 적층체는 평면상의 단위셀 또는 단위셀 적층체를 인위적으로 만곡하여 제조할 수 있으나, 본원 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 따르면 상기 단위셀 및 상기 단위셀 적층체의 만곡은 롤-라미네이션 공정에 수반되어 자연적으로 형성된 것일 수 있다.
다음으로 상기 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체를 이들의 오목면이 서로 대향하도록 포개어 놓는다(4b).
본원 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 있어서 상기 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체들은 각각 소정의 곡률 반경을 가질 수 있는데, 상기 제1 단위셀 적층체의 곡률반경(R1)은 제2 단위셀 적층체의 곡률 반경(R2)에 대해 약 -10% 내지 +10%인 것이 바람직하며, 더욱 바람직하게는 제1 단위셀 적층체와 제2 단위셀 적층체가 서로 동일한 곡률 반경을 갖는 것이다(도 5 참조).
또한, 본원 발명의 바람직한 일 실시양태에 있어서 상기 제1 단위셀 적층체와 제2 단위셀 적층체는 서로 동일한 곡률 반경을 가지고, 단위셀 적층체의 가로 및 세로의 치수가 동일한 것이다. 이러한 조건을 만족하는 경우에는 도 4의 4c에 도시된 바와 같이 양 단위셀 적층체의 만곡된 모서리 부분이 맞닿아 가압시 가장 효과적으로 만곡을 상쇄할 수 있다.
본원 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 따르면 제1 단위셀 적층체와 제2 단위셀 적층체를 오목면이 대향하도록 포개어 적층할 때 제1 단위셀 적층체의 만곡축(X1)과 제2 단위셀 적층체의 만곡축(X2)는 제1 단위셀 적층체와 제2 단위셀 적층체의 대향면에 대한 수직 평면상에 위치하는 것이 바람직하다.
도 6은 포개어진 각각의 만곡축이 대향면에 대해 수직 평면상에 위치하는 것을 도식화하여 나타낸 것이다. 만일 만곡축(X1, X2)가 소정의 각도를 갖고 교차하거나 대향면에 대한 동일한 수직 평면상에 위치하지 않는 경우에는 후술하는 단계에서 수행되는 가압에 의해 만곡 상쇄가 효과적으로 일어나지 않을 수 있다.
다음으로 상기 포개어진 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체들을 외부에서 가압하여 단위셀 적층체들을 접합시키고 만곡을 제거하여 평판형의 전극 조립체를 얻는다(S2). 본원 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 따르면 상기 가압은 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체들의 대향면에 수직인 방향으로 전극 조립체의 중심면을 향하여 가하여 지는 것이 바람직하다. 예를 들어 상기 가압은 상부 가압 부재와 하부 지지 부재를 구비하는 한 쌍의 지그(jig)를 이용하여 수행될 수 있으며, 바람직하게는 상기 가압 부재 및 하부 지지 부재는 평판형인 것이다. 즉, 오목면이 대향하도록 포개어진 단위셀 적층체들을 하부 지지 부재의 상면에 배치하고 상부 가압 부재를 하방 가압하여 상기 단위셀 적층체들을 접합시킨다.
전술한 방법에 의해 제조되는 전극 조립체는 복수개의 전극과 복수개의 분리막이 서로 교번하여 적층되어 있으며 분리막의 양 측면에는 극성이 서로 다른 반대 전극의 각각 위치하고 있다. 즉, 전극 조립체 내에서 분리막은 두 개의 반대 전극 사이에 개재되어 적층되어 있는 것으로서, 상기 전극 조립체는 모노셀 타입이거나 바이셀 타입일 수 있다.
상기 모노셀 타입의 전극 조립체는 전극 중 최상단부에 배치된 전극과 최하단부에 배치된 전극은 극성이 서로 반대인 것이다. 또한, 상기 바이셀 타입의 전극 조립체는 전극 중 최상단부에 배치된 전극과 최하단부에 배치된 전극의 극성이 서로 동일한 것이다. 본 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 있어서, 상기 바이셀 타입 또는 모노셀 타입의 전극 조립체는 상기 최상단부 전극 및/또는 최하단부 전극의 외측에 필요에 따라서 분리막이 배치되거나 배치되지 않을 수 있다. 또한, 본 발명에서 사용되는 용어인 최상단부 및 최하단부는 명세서 작성상 편의를 위해 상대적인 방향을 나타내기 위한 것이며, 절대적인 물리적 위치를 결정하는 것은 아니다.
도 7은 본원 발명에 있어서 모노셀 타입의 전극 조립체를 제조하는 방법을 도식화하여 나타낸 것이다. 본 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 따르면 제1 단위셀 적층체는 도면 도시상 하부로부터 순차적으로 분리막/제1 전극/분리막/제2 전극이 적층된 모노셀 타입의 단위셀들이 적층된 모노셀 타입의 단위셀 적층체인 것이다. 또한, 제2 단위셀 적층체는 도면 도시상 하부로부터 분리막/제1 전극/분리막/제2 전극이 적층된 모노셀 타입의 단위셀 적층체이다. 이 경우, 전극 조립체의 일단에서 제2 전극이 외부로 노출될 수 있으므로 이를 방지하기 위해 노출되는 제2 전극의 상면에 분리막을 형성하는 단계가 추가적으로 수행될 수 있다.
본원 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 있어서, 상기 만곡 형상의 제1 단위셀 적층체와 제2 단위셀 적층체는 평면 형상의 제3 단위셀 적층체를 개재하여 포개어 질 수 있다. 본 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 따르면 상기 제2 단위셀 적층체는 곡율 반경이 무한대인 평면형상인 것이다. 또한, 상기 제3 단위셀 적층체는 모노셀 타입이거나 바이셀 타입일 수 있다.
본 발명의 구체적인 일 실시양태에 있어서, 상기 제3 단위셀 적층체로는 본 발명의 전극 조립체 제조 방법에 따라 제조된 전극 조립체를 사용할 수 있다.
도 8은 모노셀 타입이며 양 표면에 모두 분리막이 배치되어 있는 제3 단위셀 적층체를 개재하여 제1 단위셀 적층체와 제2 단위셀 적층체가 적층된 모습을 도시한 것이다. 또한, 도 9는 바이셀 타입이며 양 표면이 모두 분리막으로 형성되어 있는 제3 단위셀 적층체를 개재하여 제1 단위셀 적층체와 제2 단위셀 적층체가 적층된 모습을 도시한 것이다. 이와 같이 평면 형상의 상기 제3 단위셀 적층체를 개재하여 전극 조립체를 제조하는 경우에는 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체의 만곡을 더욱 효과적으로 제거할 수 있다.
최종적으로 만곡이 제거되어 형성된 전극 조립체는 고정하기 위해 테이핑한다. 도 10은 본원 발명에 있어서 전극 조립체를 테이핑하여 고정한 일 실시양태를 개략적으로 도식화 한 것이다.
본 발명에 있어서 분리막 및 전극의 재료는 통상적으로 전기화학소자, 특히 이차 전지 또는 리튬 이온 이차 전지에 사용되는 재료라면 특별한 제한 없이 사용될 수 있으며 본 명세서에서는 구체적인 기재를 생략한다.
본 명세서에 기재된 실시예와 도면에 도시된 구성은 본 발명의 가장 바람직한 일 실시예에 불과할 뿐이고 본 발명의 기술적 사상을 모두 대변하는 것은 아니므로, 본 출원시점에 있어서 이들을 대체할 수 있는 다양한 균등물과 변형예들이 있을 수 있음을 이해하여야 한다.

Claims (11)

  1. (S1) C 자 형으로 만곡되어 소정의 곡률 반경을 갖는 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체를 이들의 오목면이 서로 대향하도록 포개어 놓는 단계; 및
    (S2) 상기 포개어진 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체들을 가압하여 상기 단위셀 적층체에서 만곡을 제거하는 단계;를 포함하는 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 (S1)에서 제1 단위셀 적층체의 곡률 반경(R1)은 제2 단위셀 적층체의 곡률 반경(R2)의 -10% 내지 +10% 인 것인, 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 (S1)에서 각각의 단위셀 적층체의 만곡 중심축은 단위셀 적층체의 대향면에 대한 수직 평면에 위치하는 것인, 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체는 각각 모노셀 및/또는 바이셀인 것인, 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법.
  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 평판형 전극 조립체는 바이셀 타입 및/또는 모노셀 타입인 것인, 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 제1 및 제2 단위셀 적층체는 각각 1개의 단위 모노셀 또는 단위 바이셀이거나, 각각 2개 이상의 단위 모노셀 또는 단위 바이셀이 적층되어 형성된 것인, 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법.
  7. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 평판형 전극 조립체는 복수개의 전극과 복수개의 분리막이 교번하여 적층되어 있으며, 두 개의 반대 전극 사이에 분리막이 개재되어 적층된 모노셀 타입 또는 바이셀 타입인 것인, 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법.
  8. 제7항에 있어서,
    상기 평판형 전극 조립체는 최상단부에 배치된 전극과 최하단부에 배치된 전극의 극성이 서로 동일한 바이셀 타입인 것인, 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법.
  9. 제7항에 있어서,
    상기 평판형 전극 조립체는 최상단부에 배치된 전극과 최하단부에 배치된 전극의 극성이 서로 반대인 모노셀 타입인 것인, 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법.
  10. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 (S1)에서 제1 단위셀 적층체와 제2 단위셀 적층체 사이에 곡률 반경이 무한대인 평면상의 제3 단위셀 적층체가 삽입되는 것인, 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법.
  11. 제10항에 있어서,
    상기 제3 단위셀 적층체는 모노셀 타입 또는 바이셀 타입인 것인, 평판형 전극 조립체의 제조 방법.
