Description

ブラシローラおよび現像装置
 本発明は、ブラシローラと、そのブラシローラを備えた現像装置に関する。
 従来、画像形成装置における現像装置に設けられる現像ローラとして、現像剤を保持するための繊維が複数植設されてなるブラシ層を有するブラシローラが知られている。この種のブラシローラに用いられる繊維としては、繊維の長手方向に延びる一つの溝を有するものが知られている(特許文献1参照)。

 ところで、ブラシローラにおいては、繊維に保持された現像剤が現像に寄与するので、繊維における現像剤の保持力を向上させることが望まれる。
 そこで、本発明は、現像剤の保持力を向上させたブラシローラおよび当該ブラシローラを備えた現像装置を提供することを目的とする。
 前記した目的を達成するため、本発明のブラシローラは、ローラ本体と、前記ローラ本体の外周面に導電性の繊維が複数植設されてなるブラシ層とを有する。前記各繊維は、長手方向に延びる複数の溝を有し、前記複数の溝は、第1溝と、前記第1溝以外の少なくとも一つの第2溝とからなり、前記第2溝の少なくとも一部は、前記繊維の前記長手方向に直交する断面において、前記断面の重心を通り、かつ、前記第1溝と重ならない任意の直線を挟んで、前記第1溝と反対側に位置し、前記第2溝の少なくとも一部は、前記断面において、前記重心を通り、かつ、前記第1溝と重ならないすべての直線に対して前記第1溝と反対側に位置している。
 このような構成によれば、複数の溝に現像剤が入りやすくなるので、繊維における現像剤の保持力を向上させることができる。また、繊維が複数の溝を有するので、溝が1つしかない構成と比較して、より多くの現像剤を保持することができる。また、複数の溝が第1溝と、任意の直線に対して反対側に配置された少なくとも一つの第2溝とからなるので、繊維の一方側に偏ることなく、繊維の両側で現像剤を保持することができる。なお、長手方向に延びる複数の溝とは、長手方向に螺旋状に延びる場合も含む概念である。
 また、本発明の現像装置は、前記したブラシローラを現像ローラとして備える構成とすることができる。この構成における現像装置が前記ブラシローラに接触し、前記ブラシ層が保持する現像剤を掻き取るように構成される掻取部材を備える場合には、前記各繊維は、表面に導電被膜を有していてもよい。また、前記掻取部材は、少なくとも前記ブラシ層と摺接する部分が金属で形成されていてもよい。
 繊維の表面に導電被膜がある構成だと、掻取部材により導電被膜が掻き取られるおそれがあるので、繊維の導電性を維持できず、ひいてはブラシローラの現像特性を維持できないおそれがある。しかし、このような構成によれば、溝の部分における導電被膜が掻取部材により掻き取られにくくなるので、繊維における溝の部分で導電性を維持することができる。
 前記した構成において、前記導電被膜は、硫化銅被膜である構成とすることができる。また、前記繊維は、前記ローラ本体に静電植毛されている構成とすることができる。
 繊維が静電植毛されると、各繊維における溝の向きがランダムに配置されやすくなるが、上記の構成であれば、第1溝および第2溝が繊維の両側に配置されているので、各繊維において比較的均一に現像剤を保持しやすくすることができる。
 前記した構成において、現像剤は、球形である構成とすることができる。
 現像剤が球形だと繊維の表面において現像剤を保持しにくくなるが、上記した構成であれば、繊維の表面に溝があるので、溝で、現像剤を保持しやすい。
 本発明によれば、ブラシローラにおける現像剤の保持力を向上させることができる。

 次に、本発明の一実施形態について、適宜図面を参照しながら詳細に説明する。なお、以下の説明では、実施形態に係る現像装置の一例としての現像カートリッジ10が着脱されるレーザプリンタ1の概略構成について説明した後、本発明の特徴部分について詳しく説明する。
 また、以下の説明において、方向は、レーザプリンタ1を使用するユーザを基準にした方向で説明する。すなわち、図1における右側を「前」、左側を「後」とし、手前側を「左」、奥側を「右」とする。また、図1における上下方向を「上下」とする。
<レーザプリンタの概略構成>
 図1に示すように、レーザプリンタ1は、本体ケーシング2内に、用紙Sを供給する給紙部3と、露光装置4と、用紙S上にトナー像を転写するプロセスカートリッジ5と、用紙S上のトナー像を熱定着する定着装置8とを主に備えている。
 給紙部3は、本体ケーシング2内の下部に設けられ、給紙トレイ31と、用紙押圧板32と、給紙機構33とを主に備えている。給紙トレイ31に収容された用紙Sは、用紙押圧板32によって上方にある給紙機構33に寄せられ、給紙機構33によってプロセスカートリッジ5(感光体ドラム61と転写ローラ63との間)に向けて供給される。
 露光装置4は、本体ケーシング2内の上部に配置され、図示しないレーザ発光部やポリゴンミラー、レンズ、反射鏡などを備えている。この露光装置4では、レーザ発光部から出射される画像データに基づくレーザ光(鎖線参照)が、感光体ドラム61の表面で高速走査されることで、感光体ドラム61の表面を露光する。
 プロセスカートリッジ5は、露光装置4の下方に配置され、本体ケーシング2に設けられたフロントカバー2Aを開いたときにできる開口から本体ケーシング2に対して着脱可能に装着される構成となっている。このプロセスカートリッジ5は、ドラムユニット6と、現像カートリッジ10とから構成されている。
 ドラムユニット6は、感光体ドラム61と、帯電器62と、転写ローラ63とを主に備えている。
 現像カートリッジ10は、ドラムユニット6に対して着脱自在となっており、筐体100を備えている。筐体100は、相互に連通する現像室101とトナー収容室102が前後に並んで配置されている。現像室101には、ブラシローラ110と、掻取部材の一例としてのブレード120とが設けられている。トナー収容室102には、正帯電性の現像剤の一例としてのトナーTが収容されており、当該トナーTを現像室101に搬送するためのアジテータ103が設けられている。なお、本実施形態におけるトナーTは、球形トナーである(図3(b)参照)。
 図2に示すように、ブラシローラ110は、トナーTを担持するための現像ローラとして設けられており、円柱状のローラ本体111と、ローラ本体111の外周面に複数の繊維112が植設されてなるブラシ層113とを有している。
 ブラシローラ110は、現像室101に貯留されたトナーTに接触しながら、図2における反時計回りに回転することで、ブラシ層113にトナーTを保持可能となっている。
 ブレード120は、薄板状の金属で形成されており、ブラシローラ110の軸線方向に沿って延びている。ブレード120は、筐体100の上壁104に設けられたブレード支持部105に固定されている。ブレード120は、ブラシローラ110の上部において上後方向から下前方向に延び、ブラシローラ110の前上側の位置において先端121をブラシローラ110側へ屈曲して形成されている。
 ブレード120の先端121は、ブラシ層113内に進入している。より詳細には、ブレード120の先端121は、ブラシローラ110の半径方向においてブラシ層113の半分程度の深さまで進入しており、ブラシ層113と接触可能となっている。このようなブレード120が設けられることにより、ブレード120によってブラシ層113内の余分なトナーTを掻き取り、ブラシローラ110上のトナー量を規制している。
 図1に戻り、プロセスカートリッジ5では、感光体ドラム61の表面が、帯電器62により一様に帯電された後、露光装置4からのレーザ光の高速走査によって露光されることで、感光体ドラム61上に画像データに基づく静電潜像が形成される。また、筐体100内に形成されたトナー収容室102内のトナーTは、アジテータ103によって撹拌されながら、ブラシローラ110に供給される。そして、ブラシローラ110の回転に伴って、ブレード120がブラシローラ110上の余分なトナーTを掻き取り、ブラシローラ110に担持されるトナー量が規制される。
 このブラシローラ110上に担持されたトナーTは、ブラシローラ110から感光体ドラム61上に形成された静電潜像に供給される。これにより、静電潜像が可視像化され、感光体ドラム61上にトナー像が形成される。その後、感光体ドラム61と転写ローラ63の間を用紙Sが搬送されることで感光体ドラム61上のトナー像が用紙S上に転写される。
 定着装置8は、プロセスカートリッジ5の後方に配置され、加熱ローラ81と、この加熱ローラ81を押圧する加圧ローラ82とを主に備えている。この定着装置8では、用紙S上に転写されたトナー像を、用紙Sが加熱ローラ81と加圧ローラ82との間を通過する間に熱定着させている。トナー像が熱定着された用紙Sは、排紙ローラ23によって排紙トレイ22上に排出される。
<ブラシローラの詳細構造>
 次に、ブラシローラ110の詳細構造について説明する。
 図3(a),(b)に示すように、各繊維112は、略円形断面に形成され、繊維層112Aの表面を第1硫化銅(Cu2S)や第2硫化銅(CuS)等の硫化銅からなる導電被膜112Bでコーティングした構成となっている。このため、繊維112の導電性を確保でき、現像時にトナーTを移動させやすくなる。なお、繊維層112Aは、ナイロンやポリエチレンテレフタレート等の非導電性の合成樹脂から構成されている。
 図3(a)に示すように、各繊維112は、繊維112が延びる方向である長手方向に沿って直線状に延びて形成された複数の溝112Cを有している。
 図3(b)に示すように、複数の溝112Cは、繊維112の内側に向けて円弧状に凹んでおり、その凹んだ部分の曲率がトナーTの表面の曲率よりも小さくなっている。これにより、複数の溝112CにトナーTが入りやすくなるので、複数の溝112CがトナーTを保持しやすくなっている。また、複数の溝112Cは、図示左側に配置された第1溝C1と、右側に配置された第2溝C2とから構成されている。また、繊維112の断面には、複数の溝112Cが無いと仮定した仮想円の重心Gが規定されている。つまり、重心Gは、略円形断面を成す繊維112の略中心である。
 第1溝C1および第2溝C2は、繊維112の長手方向に直交する断面において、重心Gを通る任意の直線Lの両側に少なくとも一部が位置するように互いに対向して配置されている。換言すると、第2溝C2の少なくとも一部が、繊維112の断面において、重心Gを通り、かつ、第1溝C1と重ならない任意の直線Lを挟んで、第1溝C1と反対側に位置している。詳細には、第2溝C2の少なくとも一部が、繊維112の断面において重心Gを通り、かつ、第1溝C1と重ならないすべての直線Lに対して、第1溝C1と反対側に位置している。図3(b)には4本の直線Lが例示的に示されており、第2溝C2の少なくとも一部は、少なくとも4本の直線Lに対して第1溝C1と反対側に位置している。これにより、第1溝C1と第2溝C2とが重心Gに対して互いに略対向する位置に形成される。換言すると、第2溝C2の少なくとも一部は、第1溝C1の円周方向の一端と重心Gとを通る直線Lと、第1溝C1の円周方向C1の他端と重心Gとを通る直線Lと、に囲まれた領域であって、重心Gに対して第1溝C1の反対側に位置する領域に位置している。
 繊維112は、繊維112の切る位置を問わず、略同じ形状を有する断面となっている。なお、繊維112の断面は、繊維112をどの位置で切っても、上記の関係を満たしていればよい。また、第2溝C2を第1溝、第1溝C1を第2溝として見ることもできる。
 また、繊維112の吸水率は、5%以下、好ましくは、3%以下とされている。これにより、高温高湿環境下においても安定した画像形成が可能となる。
 なお、繊維112の線密度は、1d以上、好ましくは2d以上であり、10d以下、好ましくは6d以下である。
[繊維の植毛方法]
 繊維112の植毛方法としては、ローラ本体111に繊維112を静電植毛する方法が挙げられる。まず、金属で形成されたローラ本体111に接着剤を塗布し、所定の長さに切断された繊維112を金属板の上に載置する。そして、ローラ本体111と金属板の一方に、例えば、5kV以上、好ましくは、15kV以上で、100kV以下の直流高電圧を印加し、他方をグラウンド(0V)に接続する。これにより、ローラ本体111と金属板との間に電界が発生し、繊維112がローラ本体111に向かって移動する。
 同時に、ローラ本体111を所定の回転速度で回転させて、繊維112をローラ本体111の周面に均一に付着させる。このようにして、各繊維112は、ローラ本体111に植毛され、図4に示すように、それぞれの溝112Cの向きがランダムになるように配置されている(一列のみ図示)。
 なお、植毛方法は、これに限定されず、ローラ本体に繊維を植毛可能である限り、適宜変更可能である。
 以上のように構成されたブラシローラ110を備えた現像カートリッジ10の作用効果について説明する。図2に示すように、ブラシローラ110が現像室101内に貯留されたトナーTに接触しながら、回転する。ここで、ブラシ層113における各繊維112がトナーTに接触すると、繊維112の複数の溝112CにトナーTが入り込むことで繊維112がトナーTを良好に保持することができる(図8(a)参照)。
 また、繊維112が第1溝C1および第2溝C2を有しているので、2つの溝112CにおいてトナーTを保持することができる。そのため、溝が1つしかない繊維を有する構成と比較して、より多くのトナーTを保持することができる。
 また、第1溝C1および第2溝C2が繊維112の断面において、当該断面の重心Gを通るすべての直線Lの両側に少なくとも一部があるので、繊維112の一方側に偏ることなく、繊維112の両側でトナーTを保持することができる。
 ブラシローラ110は、回転を続け、ブレード120の先端121と接触し、繊維112が回転方向の逆側に倒れて、そのブレード120側の表面が先端121と摺接する。これにより、ブラシ層113における余分なトナーTがブレード120の先端121により掻き取られる。ここで、図5に示すように、たまたま溝112Cがブレード120側を向いていた場合、溝112C内のトナーTも掻き取られるおそれがある。しかし、ブレード120とは反対側の表面にも溝112Cが配置されていることで、少なくとも一方の溝112Cに保持されたトナーTは、ブレード120で掻き取られず保持されたままとなる。
 また、繊維112の表面には導電被膜112Bがあるので、繊維112とブレード120の先端121が摺接することにより、余分なトナーTとともに導電被膜112Bも削り取られるおそれがある。しかし、溝112Cの凹んだ部分にブレード120の先端121は届かないので、溝112Cにおける導電被膜112Bは残り、繊維112は導電性を維持することができる。
 また、各繊維112における溝112Cの向きがランダムに配置されているが、繊維112の両側においてトナーTを保持できるので、各繊維112において比較的均一にトナーTを保持しやすくできる。
 以上、本発明の実施形態について説明したが、本発明は前記実施形態に限定されるものではない。具体的な構成については、本発明の趣旨を逸脱しない範囲で適宜変更が可能である。
 前記実施形態では、繊維112が2つの溝112Cを有する構成であったが、本発明はこれに限定されるものではない。例えば、図6(a)に示すように、繊維212が3つの溝212Cを有していてもよい。
 この構成における繊維212は、略三角断面に形成されており、各辺において繊維212側に凹む溝212Cを有している。3つの溝212Cは、等角度間隔で配置されている。この構成によれば、溝212Cを3つ有するので、トナーTの保持力をさらに高めることができる。この場合における重心Gは、3つの溝212Cが無いと仮定した仮想三角形の重心である。
 また、図6(b)に示すように、図6(a)の構成と比較して、繊維312に形成される溝312Cの深さをさらに深くしてもよい。この構成における繊維312は、図6(a)の溝212Cをさらに深くした3つの溝312Cを有することで、略Y字断面に形成されている。この構成によれば、溝312CにトナーTがより深く入りやすくなり、トナーTの保持力を高めることができる。また、この場合における重心Gも上記と同様に、3つの溝312Cが無いと仮定した仮想三角形の重心である。
 また、図6(c)に示すように、繊維412が4つの溝412Cを有していてもよい。この構成における繊維412は、十字断面に形成されており、図示における上下方向に延びる部位と左右方向に延びる部位により上下左右の四方に溝412Cが等角度間隔で形成されている。この構成によれば、4つの溝412CによりトナーTの保持力をさらに高めることができる。この場合における重心Gは、4つの溝412Cが無いと仮定した仮想正方形の重心である。
 また、図6(d)に示すように、繊維512が6つの溝512Cを有していてもよい。この構成における繊維512は、扁平断面を有しており、図示における上側と下側のそれぞれに繊維512側に凹む3つの溝512Cが並んで形成されている。この構成によれば、6つの溝512CによりトナーTの保持力をさらに高めることができる。この場合における重心Gは、6つの溝512Cが無いと仮定した仮想長方形の重心である。つまり、本願発明における重心とは、トナーTを保持するための溝が無いと仮定した仮想多角形もしくは仮想円の重心である。なお、重心は、溝がある状態における重心であっても良い。
 前記実施形態では、溝112Cが直線状に延びていたが、図7に示すように、繊維112の長手方向に沿って螺旋状に延びて形成されていてもよい。また、複数の溝112Cは、すべて同一の形状であってもよく、それぞれ異なる形状であってもよい。
 前記実施形態では、ブラシローラ110は、現像ローラとして用いられていたが、本発明はこれに限定されない。例えば、現像ローラにトナーを供給する供給ローラとして用いてもよいし、感光体ドラム上の異物を除去するクリーニングローラとして用いてもよい。
 前記実施形態では、繊維112が硫化銅からなる導電被膜112Bを有していたが、本発明はこれに限定されず、導電被膜を有していなくてもよい。この場合、例えば、カーボンブラックを繊維の中に均一に練りこんだ繊維を用いることができる。
 前記実施形態では、ブレード120が金属で形成されていたが、本発明はこれに限定されず、金属で形成されていなくてもよい。
 前記実施形態では、トナーTは球形であったが、溝で保持可能であれば、球形でなくてもよい。
 前記実施形態では、本発明の現像装置として現像カートリッジ10を例示したが、本発明はこれに限定されず、感光体ドラム及び現像ローラを備えた、いわゆるプロセスカートリッジとして現像装置を構成してもよい。
 前記実施形態では、レーザプリンタ1の現像装置に本発明を適用したが、本発明はこれに限定されず、その他の画像形成装置、例えば複写機や複合機などの現像装置に本発明を適用してもよい。
 次に、本実施形態における実施例について説明する。本実施例では、実施例のブラシローラと比較例のブラシローラを用いて各繊維における溝でトナーを保持できることを確認した。
 実施例及び比較例における繊維としては、日本蚕毛染色株式会社製のサンダーロン(登録商標)を用い、以下に示すような条件により、繊維がトナーを保持する様子を確認した。
 具体的に、蒸着処理によって表面に導電被膜が形成されたパイル(繊維)0.1gと、平均粒径9μmの球形トナー0.1gと、をポリエチレンの袋に入れて十分に撹拌し、撹拌したものの一部をピンセット等で観察台に貼り付けた導電性両面テープの上にのせた。そして、軽くエアブローして過剰なトナーを吹き飛ばし、走査型電子顕微鏡で繊維がトナーを保持する様子を観察した。

 また、吸水率Dについては、下記式(1)により算出した。
吸水率D=100×(高温高湿後質量B-乾燥後質量A)/繊維の総質量C・・・(1)
 ここで、乾燥後質量Aは、温度40℃、相対湿度10%において2時間乾燥させた後のブラシローラの質量であり、高温高湿後質量Bは、乾燥後のブラシローラを温度32℃、相対湿度82%において12時間放置した後のブラシローラの質量である。また、繊維の総質量Cは、ブラシローラに植毛されている繊維の質量であり、下記式(2)により算出した。
繊維の総質量C=143.81×ブラシの植毛密度E(千本/cm2)×繊維の長さG(mm)×ブラシの線密度F(d)/9000・・・(2)
 なお、ブラシの植毛密度Eを(千本/平方インチ)の単位で計算する場合は、式(2)は、次の通りになる。
繊維の総質量C=22.3×ブラシの植毛密度E(千本/平方インチ)×繊維の長さG(mm)×ブラシの線密度F(d)/9000
 実施例におけるブラシローラについては、図8(a)に示すように、溝において多くのトナーを保持していることが確認できる。それに対し、比較例におけるブラシローラについては、図8(b)に示すように、繊維の表面においてまばらにしかトナーを保持していないことが確認できる。従って、実施例のブラシローラにおいて、繊維によるトナーの保持力が向上していることが確認された。

Claims (7)

  1.  ローラ本体と、前記ローラ本体の外周面に導電性の繊維が複数植設されてなるブラシ層とを有するブラシローラであって、
     前記各繊維は、長手方向に延びる複数の溝を有し、
     前記複数の溝は、第1溝と、前記第1溝以外の少なくとも一つの第2溝とからなり、
     前記第2溝の少なくとも一部は、前記繊維の前記長手方向に直交する断面において、前記断面の重心を通り、かつ、前記第1溝と重ならない任意の直線を挟んで、前記第1溝と反対側に位置し、前記第2溝の少なくとも一部は、前記断面において、前記重心を通り、かつ、前記第1溝と重ならないすべての直線に対して前記第1溝と反対側に位置することを特徴とするブラシローラ。
  2.  請求項1に記載のブラシローラを現像ローラとして備えることを特徴とする現像装置。
  3.  前記ブラシローラに接触し、前記ブラシ層が保持する現像剤を掻き取るように構成される掻取部材を備え、
     前記各繊維は、表面に導電被膜を有していることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の現像装置。
  4.  前記掻取部材は、少なくとも前記ブラシ層と摺接する部分が金属で形成されていることを特徴とする請求項3に記載の現像装置。
  5.  前記導電被膜は、硫化銅被膜であることを特徴とする請求項3に記載の現像装置。
  6.  前記各繊維は、前記ローラ本体に静電植毛されていることを特徴とする請求項3に記載の現像装置。
  7.  現像剤は、球形であることを特徴とする請求項3に記載の現像装置。
