Definitions
- the gradation and the pixel transmittance are proportional.
- the gradation and the BL luminance are changed so that the transmittance ⁇ BL luminance does not change (that is, the pixel luminance does not change).
- the predetermined area is the entire image, but the predetermined area may be a partial area of the image.
- the image determination unit 35 determines whether or not the ratio of pixels that are gradations within the flicker gradation range is 30% (first threshold) or more. When the ratio is 30% or more, the image determination unit 35 determines that the image is an image in which flicker is likely to occur. When the ratio is less than 30%, the image is an image in which flicker is likely to occur. It is determined that it is not.
- the image determination unit 35 outputs to the control information output unit 36 a determination result as to whether or not the ratio of pixels that are gradations within the flicker gradation range is greater than or equal to the first threshold value.
- the values such as the flicker gradation range and the first threshold value are examples, and other values may be used.
- a threshold value (first threshold value) is set for the ratio of pixels (hereinafter, simply referred to as “flicker pixels”) that are gradations within the flicker gradation range in the image. Therefore, by appropriately setting the first threshold value through an experiment or the like, it is possible to avoid performing a process as a flicker image until the user recognizes no flicker. Accordingly, unnecessary processing is not required, so that power consumption can be further reduced.
- the gradation control unit 80 Upon receiving the image update flag (with image update) and the gradation control information from the control information output unit 36, the gradation control unit 80 reads the image data recorded in the host memory 33 and determines the gradation of the image data. Change the value higher by a fixed amount and send it to the host TG 34. The gradation is changed for the entire image. On the other hand, when the image update flag (with image update) has been received but the gradation control information has not been received, the image data read from the host memory 33 is transmitted to the host TG 34 as it is.
- the BL control unit 90 When receiving the image update flag (with image update) and the brightness control information from the control information output unit 36, the BL control unit 90 decreases the BL brightness of the display unit 10 by a predetermined amount from a preset setting value. On the other hand, when the image update flag (with image update) is received but the brightness control information is not received, the BL brightness of the display unit 10 is set as the preset value.
- an image determination unit and a control information output unit for determining whether to perform gradation / brightness control are provided on a substrate other than the host control unit.
- the display control unit 50 includes an image processing unit 51, an image determination unit 52, a control information output unit 53, a memory 21, and a TG 22.
- the COG driver determines whether to perform gradation / brightness control. Thereby, the load on the host control unit 60 can be reduced without providing a separate substrate from the host control unit 60. Since the COG driver formed on the active matrix substrate has a limited mounting area, this embodiment is suitable when only simple determination processing is performed in the image determination unit 52 and the control information output unit 53.
- the host TG 34 transfers the display data of the updated image to the display control unit 50 only when the display needs to be updated.
- the image determination unit 52 determines whether or not the image indicated by the display data is an image having a feature that makes it easy to visually recognize flicker.
- the determination process of the image determination unit 52 is as described in the above embodiment.
- the image determination unit 52 outputs the determination result to the display method switching unit 54.
- the image determination unit 52 (update detection unit) can detect an interval at which the image changes and can output the interval at which the image changes to the display method switching unit 54.
- the gradations of a plurality of pixels that are in the first range (the range of gradations 20 to 80) in the display data are changed to bright gradations (gradations 81 to 255) and / or dark gradations (gradations) outside the first range. Convert from key 0 to 19). As a result, the number of pixels in the first range of gradations in which flicker is easily visible can be reduced.
- the gradation of the target area in the display data is uniform has been described.
- the average luminance of the target area before conversion and the post-conversion may be performed so that the average luminance of the target area is the same and the gradation distribution (brightness / darkness distribution) is a checkered pattern (dither pattern).
- the display device control method is a display device control method, and an image determination step for determining whether or not an image is a flicker image having a feature that allows flicker to be visually recognized.
- the image determination step determines that the image is the flicker image, the gradation of the pixel in which flicker is easily visible to the gradation control unit that performs control to change the gradation of the flicker image.
- the ease of visually recognizing flicker greatly depends on the driving frequency and tends to become more prominent as the refresh rate decreases. For this reason, when the control information is output, there is usually a high probability that the display unit is driven at a low refresh rate. In the case of low refresh driving, the driving power of the display unit is small, and the power consumption of BL is dominant. For this reason, according to the above configuration or method, when it is determined that the image is a flickering image (usually, it is considered that the display unit is driven at a low refresh rate), the BL luminance is reduced, and therefore the consumption due to the low refresh drive. Weighting the power reduction effect, the BL power consumption reduction effect due to the decrease in BL luminance can be obtained in a superimposed manner. As described above, power consumption can be suppressed and good display can be performed.
- the image determination unit includes a predetermined pattern including a plurality of pixels that are gradations within the range of the flicker gradation in the image. It may be determined whether or not the image is the flicker image by determining whether or not the image exists.

Abstract
