Definitions
- the invention relates to a device for reading and outputting texts and / or images, in particular a reading device for people with visual impairments, comprising a stand for setting up the device, a detection unit for detecting texts and / or images with a detection surface, a processing unit for processing the acquired texts and / or images and an output unit, in particular audio unit, for outputting the processed texts and / or images.
- readers are used to enable people, despite their visual impairment, to capture texts and / or images, for example by recognizing and at least partially reading the text or images.
- An already known reading device is substantially cuboid.
- the text to be recorded for example, be placed in the form of an open book to its capture.
- the opened book with the text to be recorded is illuminated from above via a fold-out swivel arm, and an image of the text is obtained by means of a camera with swivel arm.
- the reader processes the data captured by the camera and then reads the recognized text to a corresponding user.
- One of the disadvantages of this device is that the device requires a lot of space, especially footprint on a desk.
- a further disadvantage is that the detection by means of the camera via the swivel arm is faulty, since stray light, such as ambient light, shadows, etc., complicates detection of the contents of the unfolded book, especially if the book has a thick fold.
- a reading device has become known, which is also cuboidal.
- the reader has a detection surface on which books, magazines or magazines can be placed to detect their contents. These can be fixed by means of a flap on the detection surface.
- the cover also an at least partial suppression of ambient light, etc. possible, but only for books with a thin fold. For books with thick fold, the cover can not or only very insufficiently closed. Controls are located on the user facing side.
- One of the other disadvantages of this device is that it also requires a lot of space, for example on a desk.
- books with a thin fold can be reliably detected, since in books with thick fold, the pages in the area of the fold are strongly curved and thus a detection is difficult.
- Another known reading device is also designed essentially cuboid, with a camera is mounted fold-out. In this way, the reader can partially capture a book placed under the camera.
- the disadvantage here again is that ambient light makes capturing text and images more difficult. Even books with thick folds are difficult to capture.
- This reading device includes a fold-out stand and a pull-out support arm on which a camera is arranged. If, for example, the device is set up on a desk and the support arm extended, the camera can use it to capture a magazine, a book or the like, which is also arranged on the desk and next to the reading device, and after appropriate recognition and processing texts and / or images read out.
- a disadvantage that on the one hand due to the rather large distance between the camera and images to be captured and / or texts as well as due to environmental influences such as lighting, etc., a capture of the text and / or images is considerably more difficult. Even books with thick folds are difficult to capture.
- An object of the present invention is therefore to provide a device which simplifies detection of texts and / or images. Moreover, it is an object of the present invention to provide a device which is simple in construction and inexpensive to produce. Moreover, it is an object of the present invention that contents of books with thick folds can be detected quickly and reliably. Finally, it is an object of the present invention to provide an alternative apparatus for reading and outputting texts and / or images.
- a device for reading and outputting texts and / or images in particular a reading device for people with visual impairments, comprising a stand for setting up the reading device, a detection unit for detecting texts and / or images with a detection surface, a processing unit for processing the acquired texts and / or images, and an output unit, in particular audio unit, for outputting the processed texts and / or images, in that the plane of the standing surface and the plane of the detection surface are mutually inclined by an angle, in particular at an angle 10 ° and 85 °, preferably at an angle between 30 ° and 75 °, more preferably at an angle between 50 ° and 70 ° inclined to each other.
- the detection surface for example.
- the device When the device is arranged with your footprint on a table, obliquely and so a unfolded book with a page to be detected simply from the top of the top, tapered edge of the device can be placed.
- This makes it possible, on the one hand, that the content of books, magazines or the like can be detected reliably with a thick seam, since the book must be opened less widely, so that the pages of the book are less strongly bent and can lie flat on the detection surface ,
- the content of the page can be better detected.
- Another advantage of regarding the footprint oblique detection surface is that so that the footprint can be made smaller overall, which is advantageous for the required space for the device on the desk, as it can be made smaller.
- the detection unit expediently comprises at least two cameras for detecting the detection area.
- the at least two cameras it is possible, on the one hand, to ensure complete detection of texts and / or images placed on the detection surface.
- simpler cameras with reduced resolution can be used without reducing the reliability of detection.
- simple cameras also offer a significant cost advantage.
- the at least two cameras are arranged such that they detect the detection area substantially without overlapping. In this way, a reliable detection of the detection area with a minimum number of cameras is possible.
- a covering and holding device for covering the detection surface is arranged.
- the covering and holding device on the one hand, for example, the part of a book, which is arranged on the detection surface for detecting, can be fixed in its position.
- the covering and holding device suppresses disturbing ambient or scattered light, so that a substantially defined environment is provided for capturing contents; this further improves the reliability in capturing content from books, magazines, etc.
- the cover and holding device in a closed state at least partially adjustable in terms of their distance from the detection surface.
- the flexibility of the device is further increased, so that books, magazines with different folding thicknesses by means of Reader can be detected and read.
- the reliability in recognizing contents of books, magazines with different thicknesses is ensured by an adjustability of the covering and holding device, since thus even with very different thicknesses ambient and / or scattered light, which would complicate detection, can be hidden more reliably ,
- the cameras have a resolution of at least two megapixels, in particular of at least five megapixels, preferably at least eight megapixels. In this way, a sufficient resolution of the cameras for capturing content with small font size or of small format images across the capture area is ensured.
- the cameras have lenses with opening angles of at least 90 °, in particular of at least 120 °, preferably at least 140 °. Due to the mentioned opening angle, the device can be made compact overall, since a sufficiently large area can be detected with the cameras, so that the cameras can be arranged at a small distance from the detection area.
- the detection unit expediently comprises a lighting device for illuminating the detection surface.
- a lighting device for illuminating the detection surface.
- the processing unit is arranged on the base.
- the center of gravity of the device is lowered, which improves its stability on the desk.
- one or more operating units are arranged, which are preferably arranged in a plane perpendicular to the planes of standing and detection surface. This allows a more ergonomic, lateral operation of the device by a user.
- the height, ie the extent of the device can be reduced perpendicular to the base, since appropriate control units do not have to be arranged in the area between the base and detection surface on the longitudinal edge.
- the device is portable.
- the device can, for example, provide a multiplicity of interfaces which not only enable an audio output to other devices, but can also display text and / or images magnified on a monitor.
- batteries can be arranged, which allow a mobile use of the device away from sockets, etc.
- the device can also be made of light construction materials for this purpose, which improves the weight and thus the portability of the device.
- the one or more control units are at least partially arranged in a separate operating device, which are connected to the device wirelessly via radio and / or by means of a cable.
- the operating device can be arranged by a user flexibly and according to his needs in a suitable manner.

- the reading device 1 comprises a rectangular base 2a. Above the standing surface 2a, a base 2d is first arranged, on which a movably arranged cover 4 is arranged.
- the cover 4 is rotatably mounted (reference numeral 4a) on the base 2d, so that the cover 4 can cover a detection surface 2b when it is closed.
