Abstract

Description

이차전지는 전지케이스의 형상에 따라, 전극조립체가 원통형 또는 각형의 금속 캔에 내장되어 있는 원통형 전지 및 각형 전지와, 전극조립체가 알루미늄 라미네이트 시트의 파우치형 케이스에 내장되어 있는 파우치형 전지로 분류된다. 그 중 원통형 전지는 상대적으로 용량이 크고 구조적으로 안정하다는 장점을 가진다.
전지케이스에 내장되는 상기 전극조립체는 양극/분리막/음극의 적층 구조로 이루어진 충방전이 가능한 발전소자로서, 활물질이 도포된 긴 시트형의 양극과 음극 사이에 분리막을 개재하여 권취한 젤리-롤형과, 소정 크기의 다수의 양극과 음극을 분리막이 개재된 상태에서 순차적으로 적층한 스택형, 및 젤리-롤형과 스택형의 복합 구조인 스택/폴딩형으로 분류된다. 그 중 젤리-롤형 전극조립체는 제조가 용이하고 중량당 에너지 밀도가 높은 장점을 가지고 있다.
이와 관련하여, 종래의 원통형 이차전지의 구조가 도 1에 개시되어 있다.
도 1을 참조하면, 일반적으로 원통형 이차전지(10)는 원통형 캔(20), 캔(20)의 내부에 수용되는 젤리-롤형의 전극조립체(30), 캔(20)의 상부에 결합되는 캡 어셈블리(40), 및 캡 어셈블리(40)를 장착하기 위한 클림핑 부위(50)로 구성되어 있다.
전극조립체(30)는 양극(31)과 음극(32) 사이에 분리막(33)을 개재한 상태로 젤리-롤형으로 감은 구조로 되어 있으며, 양극(31)에는 양극 탭(34)이 부착되어 캡 어셈블리(40)에 접속되어 있고, 음극(32)에는 음극 탭(도시하지 않음)이 부착되어 캔(20)의 하단에 접속되어 있다.
한편, 리튬 이차전지는 안전성이 낮다는 단점을 가지고 있다. 예를 들어, 전지가 대략 4.5V 이상으로 과충전되는 경우에는 양극 활물질의 분해반응이 일어나고, 음극에서 리튬 금속의 수지상(dendrite) 성장과, 전해액의 분해반응 등이 일어난다. 이러한 과정에서 열이 수반되어 상기와 같은 분해반응과 다수의 부반응들이 급속히 진행되며, 급기야는 전지의 발화 및 폭발이 유발되기도 한다.
따라서, 이러한 문제점을 해소하기 위하여, 일반적인 원통형 이차전지에는 전지의 비정상적인 작동시 전류를 차단하고 내압을 해소하기 위한 전류차단부재(Current Interruptive Device; CID)와 안전벤트(vent)가 전극조립체와 상단 캡 사이의 공간에 장착되어 있다.
구체적으로, 캡 어셈블리(40)는 양극 단자를 형성하는 상단 캡(41), 전지 내부의 온도 상승시 전지저항이 크게 증가하여 전류를 차단하는 PTC 소자(positive temperature coefficient element; 42), 전지 내부의 압력 상승시 전류를 차단하거나 및/또는 가스를 배기하는 안전벤트(43), 특정 부분을 제외하고 안전벤트(43)를 캡 플레이트(45)로부터 전기적으로 분리시키는 절연부재(44), 양극(31)에 연결된 양극 탭(34)이 접속되어 있는 캡 플레이트(45)가 순차적으로 적층되어 있는 구조로 이루어져 있다.
클림핑 부위(50)는 캡 어셈블리(40)를 캔(20)의 개방 상단에 장착할 수 있도록 캔(20)의 상단에 형성되어 있다. 보다 구체적으로, 클림핑 부위(50)는, 캔(20)의 상단부를 만입 비딩 가공함으로써 내측으로 비딩부(21)를 형성하고, 가스켓(60)에 캡 플레이트(45), 절연부재(44), 안전벤트(43) 및 상단 캡(41)의 외주면을 차례로 삽입한 다음, 상단부를 절곡함으로써 형성된다. 결과적으로, 클림핑 부위(50)의 내측면에 위치하는 가스켓(60)을 감싸는 형태로 되고, 클림핑(crimping) 및 프레싱 공정을 수행함으로써 캡 어셈블리(40)를 장착한다.
그러나, 가스켓(60)의 하단 내측부에서 양극 탭(34)과 캡 플레이트(45)간의 용접이 이루어지므로, 이러한 가스켓의 하단 외주면 구조에 의해 간섭이 일어날 수 있으며, 결과적으로 양극 탭과 캡 어셈블리의 접촉성이 약화되는 문제점이 발생할 수 있다.
또한, 전지가 낙하되거나 또는 외부 충격이 가해졌을 경우, 젤리-롤이 소정 방향으로 회전하거나 또는 상하 방향으로 유동할 수 있으며, 이로 인해 양극 탭 접촉부위에서 단락이 유발될 수도 있다.
따라서, 이러한 문제점들을 근본적으로 해결할 수 있는 기술에 대한 필요성이 높은 실정이다.
본 발명은 상기와 같은 종래기술의 문제점과 과거로부터 요청되어온 기술적 과제를 해결하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
본 발명의 목적은 전지의 안전성을 담보하면서 양극 탭의 용접시 간섭을 방지하고 용접성을 향상시킬 수 있는 캡 어셈블리를 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 또 다른 목적은 상기 캡 어셈블리를 이용하여 제조 공정성 및 안전성이 향상된 이차전지를 제공하는 것이다.
이러한 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 캡 어셈블리는,
양극/분리막/음극 구조의 전극조립체(젤리-롤)가 원통형 캔에 내장되어 있는 구조의 전지에서 캔의 개방 상단부에 탑재되는 캡 어셈블리로서, 안전용 전류차단부재(CID)에 의해 연결되어 있는 안전벤트; 상기 안전벤트의 외주면을 따라 그것에 접속되어 있는 돌출형의 상단 캡; 및 상기 상단 캡의 외주면에 장착되어 있는 가스켓;을 포함하고 있으며,
상기 양극에서 양극 활물질이 도포되어 있지 않은 무지부에는 용접 방식으로 양극 탭이 부착되어 있고, 전지의 제조과정에서 CID와 양극 탭의 용접이 용이하도록 상기 가스켓의 하단 외주면으로부터 상향 만입되어 있는 하나 이상의 홈부가 형성되어 있다.
즉, 본 발명에 따른 캡 어셈블리에는 상기와 같은 특정한 구조의 홈부가 형성되어 있어서, CID와 양극 탭의 용접시 하단 외주면에 의한 간섭을 최소화할 수 있으며, 결과적으로 용접성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
상기 양극 탭과 CID의 연결은 다양한 방식으로 달성될 수 있으며, 하나의 바람직한 예에서, 양극 탭은 CID의 하단면에 용접된 상태로 연결될 수 있다.
양극 탭은 진동 등에 의한 외부 충격에 대해서도 안정적인 접속상태를 유지할 수 있도록 소정의 유연성을 가져야 한다. 이러한 유연성은, 예를 들어, 양극 탭의 적어도 일부가 절곡된 상태로 용접되어 있을 수 있다.
이러한 점을 고려하여, 상기 홈부의 길이는 상기 양극 탭의 용접시 간섭을 유발하지 않는 범위라면 크게 제한되는 것은 아니며, 바람직하게는, 0.5 mm 내지 1.5 mm 일 수 있으며, 더욱 바람직하게는 0.7 mm 내지 1.2 mm일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 양극 탭의 용접을 고려하여, 홈부의 폭은 바람직하게는 1 mm 일 수 있다.
한편, 상기 홈부는 가스켓의 중심축을 기준으로 대칭되는 둘 이상의 개수로 형성되어 있는 구조일 수 있다. 따라서, 양극 탭의 용접시 센서 등의 관통이 용이하며 용접 효율성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
또 다른 예에서, 상기 가스켓은 젤리-롤의 유동을 방지하도록, 상기 가스켓의 하단 외주면으로부터 하향 연장되는 연장부를 추가로 포함할 수 있다.
즉, 가스켓의 하단 외주면에 홈부 뿐만 아니라 연장부가 형성됨으로써, 젤리-롤의 상단을 가압하여 진동시 젤리-롤의 회전 및 상하 유동을 미연에 방지할 수 있다.
상기 구조에서, 연장부의 길이는 바람직하게는 3 mm 이하일 수 있다. 상기 길이가 너무 긴 경우에는 캡 어셈블리의 장착이 용이하지 않으며, 반대로 너무 짧은 경우에는 연장부의 역할을 수행하기 어려우므로 바람직하지 않다. 더욱 바람직하게는 2 mm 이하로 형성될 수 있다.
또 다른 측면에서, 하향 연장된 상기 연장부는 상향 만입된 상기 홈부에 대응하는 개념으로 이해될 수도 있다. 즉, 상향 만입된 홈부들 사이의 부위는 하향 연장된 일종의 연장부를 형성할 수도 있다. 그러나, 상기 연장부와 홈부는 종래기술의 가스켓 디멘션을 고려하여 그보다 큰 크기로 하향 연장된 형태 및/또는 상향 만입된 형태를 가진 구조로 이루어진 것이 바람직하다.
상기 가스켓은 절연성 소재라면 특별히 제한되지 않고 다양한 소재로 이루어질 수 있는 바, 예를 들어, 전기절연성 고분자 수지 또는 전기절연성 고분자 복합체로 일 수 있으며, 구체적으로, 상기 고분자 수지는 폴리프로필렌(PP), 폴리에틸렌(PE), 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(PET), 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(PTFE), 열가소성 폴리에스테르 엘라스토머(Thermo-plastic PolyEster Elastomer: TPEE) 및 고무로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 하나 이상일 수 있다.
본 발명은 또한 상기 캡 어셈블리를 포함하고 있는 원통형 전지를 제공한다.
상기 전지는 연속적인 충방전이 가능한 이차전지로서 리튬 이차전지일 수 있다.
원통형 전지의 기본적인 구조는 도 1을 참조하여 설명하였고, 그것의 제조방법은 당업계에 공지되어 있으므로, 그에 대한 자세한 설명은 본 명세서에서 생략한다. 다만, 본 발명에 따른 원통형 전지가 도 1의 구조에서 일부 변경 내지 변형된 구조에도 적용됨은 물론이다.
도 1은 종래의 원통형 이차전지의 구조에 대한 수직 단면도이다;
도 2는 본 발명에 따른 원통형 이차전지의 구조에 대한 수직 단면도이다;
도 3은 도 2의 가스켓의 단면도의 예시이다;
도 4는 도 2의 가스켓의 단면도의 또 다른 예시이다.
이하에서는, 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 도면을 참조하여 설명하지만, 이는 본 발명의 더욱 용이한 이해를 위한 것으로, 본 발명의 범주가 그것에 의해 한정되는 것은 아니다.
도 2에는 본 발명의 하나의 실시예에 따른 원통형 이차전지의 구조에 대한 수직 단면도가 도시되어 있고, 도 3에는 도 2의 가스켓의 단면도를 모식적으로 도시하고 있다.
이들 도면을 참조하면, 양극(131)/분리막(133)/음극(132) 구조의 젤리-롤(130)이 원통형 캔(120)에 내장되어 있는 구조의 전지(100)에서 캔(120)의 개방 상단부에 탑재되는 캡 어셈블리(140)로서, CID(145)에 의해 연결되어 있는 안전벤트(143), 안전벤트(143)의 외주면을 따라 그것에 접속되어 있는 돌출형의 상단 캡(141), 및 상단 캡(141)의 외주면에 장착되어 있는 가스켓(200)을 포함한다.
양극 탭(134)는 양극(131)에서 양극 활물질이 도포되어 있지 않은 무지부(도시하지 않음)에 용접 방식으로 부착되어 있고, CID(145)의 하단면에 절곡된 상태로 용접되어 있다.
CID(145)와 양극 탭(134)의 용접이 용이하도록, PP 소재의 가스켓(200)은 하단 외주면으로부터 상향 만입되어 있는 약 0.8 mm의 길이의 홈부(210)가 형성되어 있다.
도 4에는 도 2의 또 다른 실시예의 가스켓의 단면도의 모식적으로 도시하고 있다.
도 4를 도 3과 함께 참조하면, 젤리-롤의 유동을 방지하도록, 가스켓(200)의 하단 외주면으로부터 하향 연장되는 약 1.5 mm의 연장부(220)를 추가로 포함하는 것을 제외하면 도 3과 동일하므로 자세한 내용은 생략한다.
본 발명이 속한 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자라면 상기 내용을 바탕으로 본 발명의 범주 내에서 다양한 응용 및 변형을 행하는 것이 가능할 것이다.
이상에서 설명한 바와 같이, 본 발명에 따른 캡 어셈블리는 가스켓의 하단 외주면으로부터 상향 만입되어 있는 홈부가 형성되어 있어서, CID와 양극 탭의 용접시 하단 외주면에 의한 간섭을 최소화하고, 바람직한 예에서 하단 외주면으로부터 하향 연장된 연장부가 형성되어 있어서, 젤리-롤의 유동을 방지할 수 있으므로 전지셀의 안전성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
Claims (10)
- 양극/분리막/음극 구조의 전극조립체(젤리-롤)가 원통형 캔에 내장되어 있는 구조의 전지에서 캔의 개방 상단부에 탑재되는 캡 어셈블리로서,안전용 전류차단부재(CID)에 의해 연결되어 있는 안전벤트;상기 안전벤트의 외주면을 따라 그것에 접속되어 있는 돌출형의 상단 캡; 및상기 상단 캡의 외주면에 장착되어 있는 가스켓;을 포함하고 있으며,상기 양극에서 양극 활물질이 도포되어 있지 않은 무지부에는 용접 방식으로 양극 탭이 부착되어 있고, 전지의 제조과정에서 CID와 양극 탭의 용접이 용이하도록 상기 가스켓의 하단 외주면으로부터 상향 만입되어 있는 하나 이상의 홈부가 형성되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 캡 어셈블리.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 양극 탭은 CID의 하단면에 용접된 상태로 연결되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 캡 어셈블리.
- 제 2 항에 있어서, 상기 양극 탭은 적어도 일부가 절곡된 상태로 용접되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 캡 어셈블리.
- 제 3 항에 있어서, 상기 홈부의 길이는 0.5 mm 내지 1.5 mm 인 것을 특징으로 하는 캡 어셈블리.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 홈부는 가스켓의 중심축을 기준으로 대칭되는 둘 이상의 개수로 형성되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 캡 어셈블리.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 가스켓은 젤리-롤의 유동을 방지하도록, 상기 가스켓의 하단 외주면으로부터 하향 연장되는 연장부를 추가로 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 캡 어셈블리.
- 제 6 항에 있어서, 상기 연장부의 길이는 3 mm 이하인 것을 특징으로 하는 캡 어셈블리.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 가스켓의 소재는 폴리프로필렌(PP), 폴리에틸렌(PE), 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(PET), 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(PTFE), 열가소성 폴리에스테르 엘라스토머(Thermo-plastic PolyEster Elastomer: TPEE) 및 고무로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 하나 이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 캡 어셈블리.
- 제 1 항 내지 제 8 항 중 어느 하나에 따른 캡 어셈블리를 포함하고 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 원통형 전지.
- 제 9 항에 있어서, 상기 전지는 리튬 이차전지인 것을 특징으로 하는 원통형 전지.
