- Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. H10-228667 describes a combination of exhaust gas purification and scavenging effect by a three-way catalyst.
- an exhaust soot valve is located adjacent to the intake soot valve. For this reason, if the closing timing of the exhaust soot valve is set after the intake soot valve is opened, the intake air will be lost to the exhaust pipe. In order for the three way catalyst to function properly, oxygen must not be allowed to flow through the exhaust pipe. For this reason, in a spark ignition type four-cycle engine having a three-way catalyst, the opening timing of the intake soot valve is set at substantially the same time as the closing timing of the exhaust soot valve. As a result, the 4-cycle engine having the three-way catalyst could not effectively scavenge at the exhaust top dead center.
- the purpose is to enable both exhaust gas purification and scavenging with a three-way catalyst in a 4-cycle gasoline engine with a secondary cylinder outside the main cylinder.
- the spark ignition type 4-cycle engine of the present invention includes a cylinder head, a cylinder block, a main cylinder, a piston, a combustion chamber, a spark plug, a secondary cylinder, a valve cover, a first exhaust valve, a second intake valve, and a third intake valve.

- the first exhaust soot valve is installed on the second wall surface portion.
- the valve cover reciprocates in the auxiliary cylinder.
- the upper surface of the valve cover covers the bottom surface of the umbrella portion of the first exhaust valve.
- a piston ring for the valve cover is installed between the valve cover and the sub cylinder.
- the third intake soot valve is installed between the first exhaust soot valve and the second intake soot valve.

- the third intake valve is closed.
- a fourth intake soot valve and a fifth exhaust soot valve are installed on the first wall surface portion.
- a sixth intake valve is provided on the second wall surface portion.
- the upper surface of the valve cover covers the bottom surface of the umbrella portion of the sixth intake valve.
- the fourth intake valve is disposed between the sixth intake valve and the fifth exhaust valve.
- the fifth exhaust soot valve is closed after the top dead center of the exhaust stroke, and the sixth intake soot valve is opened before the top dead center of the exhaust stroke.
- the end of the opening period of the fifth exhaust soot valve and the initial stage of the sixth intake soot valve overlap in the vicinity of the top dead center of the exhaust stroke.
- the fourth intake valve is closed.
- the intake air flowing into the combustion chamber near the top dead center of the exhaust stroke flows from the second intake soot valve toward the first exhaust soot valve.
- the inertia of the inflowing intake increases.
- the second intake valve is opened, intake air flows into contact with the bottom surface of the third intake valve.
- the inflowing intake air moves the already burned gas located in contact with the bottom surface of the third intake soot valve toward the first exhaust soot valve.
- the third intake soot valve is closed and the first exhaust soot valve is not closed. Accordingly, the burned gas is lost from the first exhaust soot valve.
- a period in which the opening period of the first exhaust soot valve overlaps the opening period of the second intake soot valve is set so that intake air does not flow out of the first exhaust soot valve. That is, the burnt gas can be scavenged without causing the intake air to flow away from the first exhaust soot valve. As a result, the amount of burnt gas remaining in the cylinder during the intake stroke is reduced, thereby reducing the amount of fuel supplied and improving fuel efficiency. In addition, oxygen does not flow through the exhaust pipe. Therefore, the three-way catalyst functions normally. Therefore, the above object is achieved.
- the action of the second aspect is slightly different from the action of the first aspect.
- the intake air that flows into the combustion chamber near the top dead center of the exhaust stroke flows from the sixth intake soot valve toward the fifth exhaust soot valve.
- the fourth intake valve is closed and the fifth exhaust valve is not closed. Therefore, the burnt gas is lost from the fifth exhaust soot valve.
- a period in which the opening timing of the sixth intake soot valve overlaps with the opening timing of the fifth exhaust soot valve is set so that intake air does not flow out of the fifth exhaust soot valve. That is, the burnt gas can be scavenged without causing intake air to flow out of the fifth exhaust soot valve. Therefore, the effect of the second aspect is the same as the effect of the first aspect.
- Patent Document 1 does not include a description of compatibility between exhaust gas purification and scavenging by a three-way catalyst.
- FIG. 3 of Patent Document 1 shows the time of compression top dead center, and does not show the time of top dead center of the exhaust stroke. The time when the intake and exhaust valves overlap is at the top dead center of the exhaust stroke.

Abstract
