Definitions
- the current invention relates to paper based biological active agent applicators, particularly to water soluble paper based herbicide applicators.
- Spraying of herbicides is known to be associated with drift spray. This occurs when a weed killer is being applied by a spray gun. This usually results in uneven and unsightly browning of healthy grass. Concern is also growing over the side effects of drift spray, i.e. aerosols of herbicides that drift unintentionally into neighboring land and spaces, to human and animal health. Similar concerns exist for insecticides. Not only is this unhealthy, but it is also wasteful.
- herbicide non spray applicators One of the most common herbicide non spray applicators is used mulch paper impregnated with herbicidal chemical. This sort of applicator for herbicides provides a localized slow release delivery of active chemicals and nutrients and retains moisture. Generally the mulch will last for a few months (during growing season) to allow the crops to grow and stop weeds during that time. Mulch also inhibits weed growth by blocking sunlight from reaching the underside. It is then left to fully degrade or mixed into soil where it degrades over a period.
- Mulch sheets are another form of weed suppression and can be made of biodegradable plastic or such materials which tend to slowly degrade and provide protection over a longer period of time. Generally mulch sheets need to be placed in position and covered in soil which is very labor and time intensive and not practical for multiple applications.
- water soluble paper can be used to be used as chemical or herbicide applicators, allowing for safe handling, thereby obviating the need for spay or mulch paper or strimmers.
- a shaped article for storing a biological active agent comprising a biological active agent between two sheets of water soluble material.
- Biologically active agents can tee include any drug or combinations thereof; for example neutraceuticals, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, molluscicides; plant growth regulators, hormones, fertilisers; biocides, disinfectants.
- the biological active agent comprises one or more of: an herbicide, an insecticide, an anti microbiocide, an anti-infective, a detergent, a nutrient, an insect repellant.
- the shaped article is for use on surfaces wherein the biological active is an herbicide.
- the surface is a soil or stone or brick or other common solid surface. Most preferably the surface is a soil surface.
- the active biological agent is released upon exposure to water, for example rain or a spray.
- the shaped article is most preferably not for slow release of a biological active agent.
- the water soluble material is a paper based material that may be biodegradable.
- the water soluble material is a sheet of material according to EP1060203A.
- the chemical is one or more of herbicide, insecticide or insect repellant.
- the chemical is a herbicide.
- the one or more biologically active chemicals is reconstituted into a suspension before being applied to one surface of a sheet a water soluble material.
- the suspension is an aqueous paste or other water soluble adhesive or paste.
- the paste is a cellulose adhesive paste soluble and most preferably the paste is an aqueous biodegradable cellulose adhesive paste.
- the cellulose adhesive paste is preferably water soluble and biodegradable.
- the shaped article can be of any shape, but a disc shape or rectangular or triangular shape is most preferable, especially disc shaped.
- the shaped article has a slit from an edge to a central point for fitting to the base of an object protruding from a surface.
- the shaped article has further slits from the central point to a second point before the edge of the shaped article for fitting around differently sized objects.
- the object is one or more of a shrub, tree, post or piping.
- the shaped article can also comprise a bitter tasting agent, and be coloured or marked to indicate danger.
- a method of manufacture of a shaped article for delivery of one or more biologically active chemicals to a surface comprising the following steps:
- Figure 1A is a herbicide disc
- Figures 1 B to 1 C is a herbicide square at the base of a bird feeding table disintegrating after a rain fall over 1 hour;
- Figure 1 D and 1 E shows the same herbicide square of Figures 1 B and 1 D after exposure to water
- Figure 2A to 2C shows shaped articles with varying concentrations of herbicide, providing a dose dependent effect on the grass below, after exposure to water.
- a water soluble biodegradable adhesive paste is mixed to the correct consistency.
- the dry powder herbicide (chemical) is mixed into the cellulose paste.
- a second sheet of biodegradable water soluble paper is placed on top of the paper that has the paste mix on it.
- the paper resembles a single sheet of paper and retains the same qualities.
- the paper can be cut or folded into any shape as it retains the same flexibility and characteristics of regular paper.
- the finished product dissolves with the introduction of cold water, hot water and most aqueous solutions.
- the paper in the product is a natural material that biodegrades when the introduction of water.
- the paper in the product is 100% biodegradable, compostable and environmentally friendly.
- the finished product dissolves and releases the herbicide (chemical) without agitation with the introduction of water.
- the finished product dissolves in a timely manner with the introduction of water, releasing the herbicide (chemical), without a time lag.
- the herbicide action is as per normal application, and takes a few days to kill the underlying grass or vegetation.
- the paper is safe for the user to handle as the herbicide (chemical) is contained between the two pieces of paper that are bonded together. There is no chemical on the exposed side s of the product.
- the finished product resembles and has the same characteristics of a regular sheet of paper, is flexible, can be cut, shaped or printed on as desired.
