Definitions
- the present invention relates to an image display device that displays an image by diffracting coherent light using a diffraction grating pattern.
- CGH computer generated hologram
- a diffraction grating pattern obtained by a computer based on an input image corresponding to a target display image to be displayed is displayed on a phase modulation type liquid crystal panel or the like, and the liquid crystal panel is irradiated with laser light for diffraction.
- the wavefront of the display light from the virtual image position is reproduced, and the virtual image is displayed to the user.
- the CGH method has a feature that a three-dimensional stereoscopic image can be displayed in front of or behind the liquid crystal panel.
- an apparatus for holographic reconstruction of a three-dimensional scene as an image display apparatus that displays a three-dimensional stereoscopic image by the CGH method (see Patent Document 1).
- an image display device that displays a three-dimensional stereoscopic image to a user using a diffraction grating pattern (see Patent Document 2).
- the conventional image display apparatus using the CGH method irradiates the spatial modulation element that displays the diffraction grating pattern superimposed on each pixel of the input image with laser light, and displays the displayed diffraction grating pattern. An image is displayed by the diffracted laser beam.
- the diffraction efficiency of the laser light that irradiates the spatial modulation element does not change greatly depending on the input image, and the total luminance of the entire virtual image does not change significantly. For this reason, when there are many pixels with high luminance in the input image, the laser light is distributed to the many pixels, and the pixels of the virtual image are displayed with low luminance. On the other hand, when there are only a small number of pixels with high luminance in the input image, the laser light is concentrated on the small number of pixels, and the pixels of the virtual image are displayed with higher luminance. In this way, when an image is displayed by a computer generated hologram, the diffraction efficiency is almost constant. Therefore, when there are few bright pixels in the input image, the luminance is higher than the luminance to be displayed, and conversely there are many bright pixels. In addition, the luminance is smaller than the luminance to be displayed.
- the number of pixels with high luminance in the input image changes, so the luminance and display color change depending on the scene.
- the number of high-luminance pixels in the input image varies depending on the number of characters, which causes problems such as a change in luminance and display color.
- An object of the present invention is to provide an image display device capable of displaying a virtual image with a desired luminance without being affected by fluctuations in the number of pixels with high luminance in an input image.
- An image display device includes a light source that emits coherent light, a space that diffracts the coherent light by displaying a diffraction grating pattern corresponding to an input image, and displays a virtual image by the diffracted light.
- the virtual image is calculated with a lower luminance than the reference virtual image displayed using the input image as it is when the total luminance is reduced by calculating the total luminance that represents the sum of the luminances of all the pixels of the input element and the modulation element.
- a control unit that controls at least one of the light source and the spatial modulation element.
- the above-described image display device can display a virtual image with a desired luminance without being affected by fluctuations in the number of pixels with high luminance in the input image.

- the illumination optical system itself may be omitted, and in this case, no optical component is disposed between the light source 101 and the spatial modulation element 103, and the space is used as it is.
- the laser light from the light source 101 becomes a spherical wave centered on the light source, and the diffraction grating pattern displayed on the spatial modulation element 103 can be calculated in consideration of the curvature of the wave front.
- there are no optical components there is an advantage that a clear image can be obtained because aberrations and stray light due to reflected light are not easily generated.
