Description

放射線検出器
 本発明は、放射線検出器に関する。
 特許文献1~3には、容易に製造でき、且つ高い位置分解能を実現できる放射線検出器が開示されている。特許文献1に記載された放射線検出器は、複数の改質領域を含むシンチレータと、シンチレータの表面と光学的に結合された複数の光検出器とを備える。複数の改質領域は、シンチレータとなる結晶塊の内部にレーザ光を照射することにより形成される。この改質領域は、シンチレータの内部において周囲と異なる屈折率を有し三次元的に点在している。
 特許文献2に記載された放射線検出器は、放射線の入射によりシンチレーション光を発生する結晶塊を備えるシンチレータと、結晶塊の端面と光学的に結合された複数の光検出器又は位置検出型光検出器とを備える。結晶塊の内部には、複数の改質領域が形成されている。複数の改質領域は、所定の方向を長手方向とする細長形状を各々呈しており、結晶塊における該方向と交差する二次元方向に互いに間隔をあけて配置されている。
 特許文献3に記載された放射線検出器は、結晶性を有し放射線の入射によりシンチレーション光を発生する結晶塊を備えたシンチレータと、結晶塊の表面と光学的に結合された光検出器とを備える。シンチレータは複数の散乱面をその内部に有する。各散乱面は、結晶塊の内部にレーザ光を照射することにより形成され、結晶塊の内部において或る軸線と平行な2以上の面方向に沿って各々延在し互いに交差する2つ以上のクラックからなる。
 特許文献4には、レーザ技術を用いて検知器又は光ガイドを作成する方法が開示されている。特許文献4に記載された方法は、レーザ技術を用いてターゲット媒体内にマイクロボイドを形成することにより媒体を光学的に分断する。
 特許文献5には、位置分解能を向上させることができる放射線検出器が開示されている。図12に示されるように、特許文献5に記載された放射線検出器100は、縞状の粗研磨部102を側面に複数形成した柱状シンチレータ101と、該柱状シンチレータ101の両端に光学的に結合された光検出器103,104とを有している。

 PET装置(Positron Emission Tomography)に用いられる放射線検出器の検出精度を向上させる方法の一つに、シンチレータ内における放射線を検出した位置に関する情報(以下、「検出位置情報」という)を用いる方法がある。検出位置情報を得る方法には、例えば、シンチレータを複数の領域に光学的に分離し、シンチレーション光が発生した領域を特定する方法がある。
 具体的には、例えば、シンチレーション光の減衰時間が互いに異なる異種のシンチレータをPMT(PhotoMultiplier Tube)上に積み重ねる方法がある。しかし、シンチレーション光の減衰時間が互いに異なるシンチレータの種類が少ないため、例えば4種以上のシンチレータを積み重ねることが困難である。従って、位置精度の向上には限界がある。
 また、他の方法として、シンチレータ端面の面内方向に沿うオフセットを設けて複数のシンチレータをPMT上に積み重ねる方法がある。この方法は、1つのシンチレータ結晶の端面にダイヤモンドカッターを用いて溝を設けて複数のシンチレータセルを形成し、更に該端面とは反対側の端面に所定のオフセットを設けて、同様の方法により複数のシンチレータセルを形成する。しかし、このようなシンチレータは構造が複雑になる。従って、シンチレータの製造には時間と費用とを要する。
 また、複数のシンチレータセルにおいて、いずれのシンチレータセルで発光したかを明瞭に特定することができるように、複数のシンチレータセルの間に、空隙や、様々な光学的結合材や、所定の屈折率を有する光学的分離材などを配置する方法がある。しかし、このようなシンチレータの製造には、複数のシンチレータセルを組み立てる工程が必要である。従って、シンチレータの製造には時間と費用とを要する。
 また、図13に示されるように、それぞれのシンチレータセル111を光学的に分離するために、シンチレータセル111の間にくし型の反射材112を配置する方法がある。このシンチレータ110によれば、シンチレーション光がシンチレータセル111の上側において発生した場合には、シンチレーション光はX方向へ散乱する。一方、シンチレーション光がシンチレータセル111の下側において発生した場合には、シンチレーション光はY方向へ散乱する。このように、シンチレーション光が拡散する方向と範囲とに基づいて、シンチレーション光が発生した位置を算出することができる。しかし、このようなシンチレータの製造には、くし型の反射材112を製造し、更に反射材112とシンチレータセル111とを組み立てる工程が必要である。従って、シンチレータ110の製造には時間と費用とを要する。
 また、例えば、シンチレータの一端に設けられた光検出器から出力される信号振幅と、他端に設けられた光検出器から出力される信号振幅との比率に基づいて検出位置情報を算出する方法がある。このような方法によると、シンチレータを複数の領域に分離する方法と異なり、検出位置情報を空間的に連続的な情報として検出できるという利点を有する。しかし、シンチレータセルの内部が光学的にほぼ均質のため、シンチレータセル内の発光位置による両端で光出力の比が小さく、検出位置精度が悪い傾向がある。
 また、図14に示されるように、シンチレータ121と、シンチレータ121の両端部に設けられた光検出器122,124を備える放射線検出器120において、シンチレータ121の表面に溝123をシンチレータの長手方向に沿って等間隔に配置する方法がある(例えば、非特許文献1参照)。これにより両端の光検出器で得られる信号量の差を拡大し、検出位置精度の向上を図っている。しかし、このようなシンチレータ121の製造には、溝123を形成するための加工が必要である。従って、シンチレータ121の製造には時間と費用とを要する。
 本発明は、上述した問題点を鑑みてなされたものであり、容易に製造でき、且つ良好な位置検出特性を実現できる放射線検出器を提供することを目的とする。
 本発明の一観点の放射線検出器は、放射線を検出する放射線検出器であって、第1の端面、第1の端面の反対側にある第2の端面、及び第1の端面側から第2の端面側に向かう第1の方向に沿って互いに間隔をあけて形成された複数の光散乱面を有するシンチレータと、第1の端面と光学的に結合された第1の光検出器と、第2の端面と光学的に結合された第2の光検出器と、を備え、光散乱面は、第1の方向と交わるように形成され、光散乱面は、シンチレータの内部にレーザ光を照射することにより形成された一又は複数の改質領域を含む。
 この放射線検出器においては、シンチレータの第1の端面に第1の光検出器が光学的に結合され、第2の端面に第2の光検出器が光学的に結合されている。このような構成により、シンチレータの内部で発生したシンチレーション光を第1の光検出器と第2の光検出器とにより検出し、検出した光出力の比を算出することができる。この光出力の比は、発光領域ごとに容易に弁別可能な所定の差を有している。従って、光出力の比に基づいて、シンチレーション光が発生した発光領域を精度良く特定することが可能となり、放射線検出器は良好な位置検出特性を実現することができる。
 上記放射線検出器においては、光散乱面がシンチレータの内部にレーザ光を照射することにより形成されてもよい。光散乱面の形成にレーザ光による加工方法を用いることにより、光散乱面の形成工程を自動化することが可能となる。このレーザ光による加工方法は、シンチレータの表面を研磨したり、シンチレータの表面に溝を設ける方法よりも簡便に行うことができる。従って、上述した放射線検出器は容易に製造できる。
 上記放射線検出器においては、放射線検出器の改質領域が、互いに重なり合う複数の改質スポットから構成されていてもよい。このような構成により、シンチレーション光を散乱する改質領域を有する光散乱面を好適に形成することができる。
 上記放射線検出器の光散乱面は、改質領域が光散乱面の全面に形成されて成っていてもよい。このような構成により、光検出器に近い領域で発生したシンチレーション光を検出した場合の光出力と、光検出器から遠い領域で発生したシンチレーション光を検出した場合の光出力との差を大きくすることができる。従って、第1の光検出器及び第2の光検出器により検出された光出力の比をより精度良く算出することが可能となり、上記放射線検出器は更に良好な位置検出特性を実現することができる。
 上記放射線検出器の光散乱面は、改質領域が形成された第1の領域と改質領域が形成されていない第2の領域とを有し、第2の領域は第1の領域によって囲まれていてもよい。放射線の吸収により発生するシンチレーション光は、吸収したエネルギーによっても異なるが、数百から数千個のフォトンが発生するため、この一部の光がこの散乱面にて影響を受ければ、両端の到達する光が影響を受けることとなるため、同じような効果をもたらすことができる。したがって、シンチレータの厚さが厚い場合にも、このような構成により、シンチレータのレーザ入射面からの距離が長いために、改質領域の形成が困難である領域が光散乱面に存在する場合でも、複数の光散乱面を好適に形成することができる。また、光散乱面の全面に改質領域を形成する必要がないため、上記放射線検出器は容易に製造することができる。
 上記放射線検出器の光散乱面は、改質領域が形成された複数の第3の領域と改質領域が形成されていない複数の第4の領域とを有し、第3の領域と第4の領域とが市松模様状に配置されていてもよい。また、上記放射線検出器においては、第1の端面が四角形状であり、光散乱面が第1の端面における一の対角線に沿った方向に延びた第1の改質領域と、第1の端面における他の対角線に沿った方向に延びた第2の改質領域とを有していてもよい。また、上記放射線検出器においては、光散乱面が第2の方向に延びた複数の改質領域を有し、複数の改質領域が第2の方向と略直交する方向に沿って互いに間隔をあけて配置されていてもよい。また、上記放射線検出器においては、第1の端面が四角形状であり、光散乱面が4つの改質領域を有し、改質領域が光散乱面の四隅のそれぞれに配置されていてもよい。更に、上記放射線検出器においては、光散乱面が光散乱面の縁部の一部又は全部に沿った方向に延びた改質領域を有していてもよい。
 このような構成により、光散乱面における改質領域の面積は、所定の値に設定される。これにより、第1の光検出器及び第2の光検出器に配分されるシンチレーション光の比率を所定の値に設定することができる。このように上記放射線検出器によれば、光検出器に到達する光量を任意の大きさにすることができるので、更に良好な位置検出特性を実現することができる。
 本発明による放射線検出器によれば、容易に製造でき、且つ良好な位置検出特性を実現できる。

 以下、添付図面を参照しながら本発明による放射線検出器の実施の形態を詳細に説明する。なお、図面の説明において同一の要素には同一の符号を付し、重複する説明を省略する。
<第1実施形態>
 図1は、第1実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Aの概観と内部構成とを示す斜視図である。本実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Aは、シンチレータ2Aと、シンチレータ2Aの第1の端面11に光学的に結合される第1の光検出器12と、第2の端面13に光学的に結合される第2の光検出器14と、反射部19とを備えている。
 シンチレータ2Aは、第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14にシンチレーション光を提供するための部材である。シンチレータ2Aは、ガンマ線などの放射線の入射によりシンチレーション光を発生する結晶塊10Aにより構成されている。この結晶塊10Aは、略直方体状の外形形状を有している。
 シンチレータ2Aは、結晶塊10Aに入射した放射線を吸収し、その線量に応じた強さのシンチレーション光を発生する。結晶塊10Aは、例えばBiGe12(BGO)、CeがドープされたLuSiO(LSO)、Lu2(1-X)2XSiO(LYSO)、GdSiO(GSO)、PrがドープされたLuAG(LuAl12)、CeがドープされたLaBr(LaBr)、CeがドープされたLaCl(LaCl)、CeがドープされたLu0.70.3AlO(LuYAP)などのいずれかの結晶によって好適に構成される。
 図1に示されるように、シンチレータ2Aは、複数の光散乱面21と、複数の発光領域31とを備えている。シンチレータ2Aは、複数の光散乱面21により複数の発光領域31に分離されている。この複数の光散乱面21は、第1の端面11から第2の端面13に向かう第1の方向Pに沿って互いに間隔をあけて形成されている。また、複数の光散乱面21は、第1の方向Pと交わるように形成されている。これらの光散乱面21は、シンチレータ2Aの第1の端面11あるいは第2の端面13と同じ平面形状を有する。なお、図1に示されるシンチレータ2Aの内部には3つの光散乱面21が形成されているが、これに限られることはない。光散乱面21は4つ以上形成されていてもよい。
 光散乱面21は、光散乱面21の全面に形成された改質領域21Rにより構成されている。改質領域21Rは、レーザ光の照射により、互いに重なり合うように形成された複数の改質スポットにより構成され、この複数の改質スポットが光学的な散乱面を形成している。改質スポットは、例えばボイド状の形状を有している。改質領域21Rは、シンチレーション光を遮断したり吸収したりするものではないため、光散乱面21の全面に改質領域21Rが形成されていても、一部のシンチレーション光は透過する。この光散乱面21は、光散乱面21への入射角度によりシンチレーション光の透過率が異なるという性質を有する。この光散乱面21の透過率は、シンチレーション光の入射角度に応じて変化する。例えば、光散乱面21へシンチレーション光が垂直に入射した場合には、入射したシンチレーション光は殆ど透過する。一方、入射角度が大きくなると、垂直に入射した場合と比較して透過率が下がる。
 第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14は、例えば、光電子増倍管やアバランシェフォトダイオード(APD:Avalance Photo Diode)、あるいはMPPC(Multi―Pixel Photon Counter)といった半導体光検出器により好適に構成される。なお、MPPCは、複数のガイガーモードAPDのピクセルから成るフォトンカウンティングデバイスである。本実施形態の放射線検出器1Aは、第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14を備えている。そのうちの一の光検出器である第1の光検出器12は、結晶塊10Aの第1の端面11と対向するように結晶塊10A上に取付けられている。また、他の光検出器である第2の光検出器14は、結晶塊10Aの第2の端面13と対向するように結晶塊10上に取付けられている。これにより、第1の光検出器12は、結晶塊10Aの第1の端面11と光学的に結合され、第2の光検出器14は結晶塊10Aの第2の端面13と光学的に結合されている。
 反射部19は、シンチレータ2Aにおける第1の端面11と第2の端面13との間に延在する側面を覆うように設けられている。この反射部19は、例えば、テフロンテープ(テフロンは登録商標)、硫酸バリウム、酸化アルミ、酸化チタン、ESR(Enhanced Specular Reflector)フィルム、及びポリエステルフィルムといった部材のいずれかにより好適に構成される。
 次に、図2を用いて本実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Aの作用効果を説明する。図2のグラフG1は、シンチレータ2Aにおけるシンチレーション光の発光位置と、第1の光検出器12から出力される光出力との関係を示す。また、グラフG2は、シンチレータ2Aにおけるシンチレーション光の発光位置と、第2の光検出器14から出力される光出力との関係を示す。また、グラフG3は、光出力の比とシンチレーション光の発光位置との関係を示す。光出力の比は、第1の光検出器12から出力される光出力と、第2の光検出器14から出力される光出力との比である。
 本実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Aでは、シンチレータ2Aの第1の端面11に第1の光検出器12が光学的に結合されている。また、第2の端面13に第2の光検出器14が光学的に結合されている。このような構成により、シンチレータ2Aの内部で発生したシンチレーション光を第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14により検出し、第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14から出力される光出力の比を算出することができる。
 また、本実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Aでは、シンチレータ2Aは複数の光散乱面21を有している。この複数の光散乱面21により、第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14に到達する光量を段階的に減衰させることができる。例えば、シンチレータ2Aにおける位置F1においてシンチレーション光が発生した場合、シンチレーション光は、光散乱面21を透過して第1の光検出器12に到達する。光散乱面21を透過するときにシンチレーション光の一部は散乱されるため、光散乱面21の透過後には、透過前よりも光量が減少する。そして、第1の光検出器12から光出力H1が出力される。一方、第2の光検出器14から光出力H2が出力される。
 そして、第1の光検出器12から出力された光出力H1と、第2の光検出器14から出力された光出力H2との比H3が算出される。この光出力の比H3は、グラフG3に示されるように、発光領域31ごとに容易に弁別可能な所定の差を有している。従って、光出力の比H3に基づいて、シンチレーション光が発生した発光領域31を精度良く特定することが可能となり、放射線検出器1Aは良好な位置検出特性を実現することができる。
 また、光散乱面21はシンチレータ2Aの内部にレーザ光を照射することにより形成される。光散乱面21の形成にレーザ光による加工方法を用いることにより、光散乱面21の形成工程を自動化することが可能となる。このレーザ光による加工方法は、シンチレータの表面を研磨したり、シンチレータの表面に溝を設ける方法よりも簡便に行うことができる。従って、上述した放射線検出器1Aは容易に製造できる。
 更に、光散乱面21の全面には、改質領域21Rが形成される。このような構成により、第1の光検出器12又は第2の光検出器14に近い領域で発生したシンチレーション光を検出した場合の光出力と、第1の光検出器12又は第2の光検出器14から遠い領域で発生したシンチレーション光を検出した場合の光出力との差を大きくすることができる。従って、第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14により検出された光出力の比をより精度良く算出することが可能となり、上述した放射線検出器1Aは更に良好な位置検出特性を実現することができる。
 なお、改質領域21Rは、以下に説明する方法により形成される。図3は、複数の改質領域21Rを含むシンチレータ2Aを製造する一工程を説明するための図であり、この工程に使用されるレーザ加工装置200の構成を示している。
 レーザ加工装置200は、レーザ光Lを発生するレーザ光源201と、レーザ光Lの出力やパルス幅等を調節するためにレーザ光源201を制御するレーザ光源制御部202と、レーザ光Lの光路上に設けられたシャッタ203と、レーザ光Lの反射機能を有し且つレーザ光Lの光軸の向きを90°変えるように配置されたダイクロイックミラー204と、ダイクロイックミラー204で反射されたレーザ光Lを集光する集光用レンズ205と、集光用レンズ205で集光されたレーザ光Lが照射される結晶塊10Aが載置される載置台207と、載置台207をX軸方向に移動させるためのX軸ステージ209と、載置台207をX軸方向に直交するY軸方向に移動させるためのY軸ステージ211と、載置台207をX軸及びY軸方向に直交するZ軸方向に移動させるためのZ軸ステージ213と、これら3つのステージ209,211,213の移動を制御するステージ制御部215とを備える。
 なお、Z軸方向は、結晶塊10Aに入射するレーザ光Lの焦点深度の方向となる。したがって、Z軸ステージ213をZ軸方向に移動させることにより、結晶塊10Aの内部にレーザ光Lの集光点Dを合わせることができる。また、この集光点DのX軸方向、Y軸方向への各移動は、結晶塊10AをX軸ステージ209、Y軸ステージ211によりX軸方向、Y軸方向に移動させることによりそれぞれ行う。
 レーザ光源201は超短パルスレーザ光を発生するYb:KGWレーザである。レーザ光源201に用いることができるレーザとして、この他、Yb:YAGレーザ、Nd:YAGレーザ、Nd:YVOレーザ、Nd:YLFレーザやチタンサファイアレーザがある。なお、結晶塊10Aの加工にはパルスレーザ光を用いても良く、連続波レーザ光を用いても良いが、パルスレーザ光が好適である。
 パルスレーザ光としてはフェムト秒パルスレーザ光やピコ秒パルスレーザ光等が挙げられる。フェムト秒やピコ秒のレーザパルスは、レーザエネルギの吸収速度が熱拡散速度より早いため、被加工部位の周辺への熱による影響が少なく、また高い電場密度を容易に得ることができるので、クラックを生じさせない屈折率変化などの改質領域21Rを好適に形成できる。なお、ナノ秒レーザパルスは、加工閾値以上の電場密度を得るためにはフェムト秒やピコ秒のレーザパルスの数倍の照射エネルギを必要とし、またレーザエネルギが被加工材料に蓄熱され易いので、屈折率変化などの改質領域21Rの形成には更なる工夫が必要となる。
 レーザ加工装置200はさらに、載置台207に載置された結晶塊10Aを可視光線により照明するために可視光線を発生する観察用光源217と、ダイクロイックミラー204及び集光用レンズ205と同じ光軸上に配置された可視光用のビームスプリッタ219とを備える。ビームスプリッタ219と集光用レンズ205との間にダイクロイックミラー204が配置されている。ビームスプリッタ219は、可視光線の約半分を反射し残りの半分を透過する機能を有しかつ可視光線の光軸の向きを90°変えるように配置されている。観察用光源217から発生した可視光線はビームスプリッタ219で約半分が反射され、この反射された可視光線がダイクロイックミラー204及び集光用レンズ205を透過し、結晶塊10Aの被加工部位を照明する。
 レーザ加工装置200はさらに、ビームスプリッタ219、ダイクロイックミラー204及び集光用レンズ205と同じ光軸上に配置されたCCDカメラ221及び結像レンズ223を備える。被加工部位を照明した可視光線の反射光は、集光用レンズ205、ダイクロイックミラー204、ビームスプリッタ219を透過し、結像レンズ223で結像されてCCDカメラ221で撮像され、撮像データとなる。
 レーザ加工装置200はさらに、CCDカメラ221から出力された撮像データが入力される撮像データ処理部225と、レーザ加工装置200全体を制御する全体制御部227と、モニタ229とを備える。撮像データ処理部225は、撮像データを基にして観察用光源217で発生した可視光の焦点を結晶塊10A上に合わせるための焦点データを演算する。この焦点データを基にしてステージ制御部215がZ軸ステージ213を移動制御することにより、可視光の焦点が結晶塊10Aに合うようにする。よって、撮像データ処理部225はオートフォーカスユニットとして機能する。また、撮像データ処理部225は、撮像データを基にして結晶塊10Aの拡大画像等の画像データを演算する。この画像データは全体制御部227に送られ、全体制御部227で各種処理がなされ、モニタ229に送られる。これにより、モニタ229に拡大画像等が表示される。
 全体制御部227には、ステージ制御部215からのデータ、撮像データ処理部225からの画像データ等が入力し、これらのデータを基にしてレーザ光源制御部202、シャッタ203、観察用光源217及びステージ制御部215を制御することにより、レーザ加工装置200全体を制御する。よって、全体制御部227はコンピュータユニットとして機能する。
 続いて、本実施形態に係るシンチレータ2Aの製造方法について説明する。図4は、上述したレーザ加工装置200を用いてシンチレータ2Aの結晶塊10Aを製造する方法を示すフローチャートである。
 まず、結晶塊10Aをレーザ加工装置200の載置台207上に載置する。そして、観察用光源217から可視光を発生させて結晶塊10Aを照明する。照明された結晶塊10Aの表面(例えば端面10A1)をCCDカメラ221により撮像する。CCDカメラ221により撮像された撮像データは、撮像データ処理部225に送られる。この撮像データに基づいて、撮像データ処理部225は観察用光源217の可視光の焦点が結晶塊10Aの表面に位置するような焦点データを演算する。この焦点データは、ステージ制御部215に送られる。ステージ制御部215は、この焦点データを基にしてZ軸ステージ213をZ軸方向に移動させる。これにより、観察用光源217の可視光の焦点が結晶塊10Aの表面に位置する(S101)。なお、撮像データ処理部225は、撮像データに基づいて結晶塊10Aの表面の拡大画像データを演算する。この拡大画像データは全体制御部227を介してモニタ229に送られ、これによりモニタ229に結晶塊10Aの表面の拡大画像が表示される。
 続いて、結晶塊10Aの内部に改質領域21Rを形成するためのレーザ光Lの集光点Dが、結晶塊10Aの表面または内部における一つの改質領域21Rの加工初期位置となるよう、X軸ステージ209、Y軸ステージ211及びZ軸ステージ213により結晶塊10Aを移動させる(S103)。この状態でシャッタ203を開いてレーザ光Lを照射し、該集光部分におけるシンチレータ材料を改質(アモルファス化)させることによって、結晶塊10Aの内部に改質スポットを形成する。そして、このような改質スポットを形成しながら、Z軸ステージ213により結晶塊10AをZ軸方向に一定速度で移動させる(S105)。これにより、Z軸方向を長手方向とする細長形状(ストライプ状)の改質スポットの列が形成される(S107)。このとき、それぞれの改質スポットは、互いに重なり合うように形成するとよい。
 この改質スポットは、例えば屈折率が周囲より小さい領域、光を散乱する領域、及び回折型レンズを構成する領域のうち少なくとも一つの領域である。その後、レーザ光Lのシャッタ203を閉じる(S109)。
 続いて、他に形成すべき改質スポットがある場合(S111:Yes)、レーザ光Lの集光点Dが結晶塊10Aの内部における当該改質スポットの加工初期位置となるよう、X軸ステージ209、Y軸ステージ211及びZ軸ステージ213により結晶塊10Aを移動させる。例えば、先に形成した改質スポットに対して所定のピッチだけX軸方向またはY軸方向に結晶塊10Aを移動させるとよい(S113)。この場合、先に形成された改質スポットの列と、新たに形成される改質スポットの列とが互いに重なり合うようにされるとよい。
 以降、上述したステップS103ないしS113を繰り返すことによって、改質スポットにより構成される複数の改質領域21Rを形成することができる。複数の改質領域21Rのそれぞれは、結晶塊10Aの内部において第1の方向P(Y軸方向)に互いに間隔をあけて規則的に配置されるように形成するとよい。
 なお、複数の改質領域21Rの全てを形成し終えると(S111:No)、この工程を終了する。
<第2実施形態>
 図5は、第2実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Bの概観と内部構成とを示す図である。本実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Bは、複数の光散乱面22を有するシンチレータ2Bと、第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14と、反射部19とを備える。本実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Bは、第1実施形態に係る光散乱面21とは異なる光散乱面22を有している点で、第1実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Aと異なっている。なお、第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14、及び反射部19の構成及び配置は、上述した第1実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Aと同様であるため、詳細な説明は省略する。
 シンチレータ2Bの結晶塊10Bの内部には、複数の光散乱面22が形成されている。光散乱面22は、改質領域22R(第1の領域)と、改質領域22Rが形成されていない非改質領域22N(第2の領域)とを含んでいる。この改質領域22Rは、結晶塊10Bの内部にレーザ光を照射することにより好適に形成される。非改質領域22Nは、改質領域22Rにより囲まれている。
 本実施形態のように、複数の光散乱面22が形成されたシンチレータ2Bを備える放射線検出器1Bであっても、上述した第1実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Aの効果を好適に得ることができる。加えて、本実施形態によれば、シンチレータ2Bのレーザ入射面である側面15からの距離が長いために、改質領域22Rの形成が困難である領域が光散乱面22に存在する場合でも、その場所には改質領域22Rを形成する必要はない。従って、複数の光散乱面22を好適に形成することができる。また、改質領域22Rを光散乱面22の全面に形成する必要がない。そのため、光散乱面22を形成するための加工時間を短縮することができる。
 更に、図6を用いて本実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Bの作用効果を説明する。図6は、シンチレータ2Bにおけるシンチレーション光の発光位置と、第1の光検出器12により検出される光出力との関係を示す。グラフG4は、シンチレータ2Bにおけるシンチレーション光の発光位置と光出力との関係を示す。グラフG5は、第1実施形態に係るシンチレータ2Aにおけるシンチレーション光の発光位置と、第1の光検出器12により検出される光出力との関係を示す。さらに、グラフG6は比較のため、光散乱面を有しないシンチレータにおけるシンチレーション光の発光位置と、第1の光検出器12により検出される光出力との関係を示す。
 光散乱面を透過するときに、シンチレーション光が散乱される度合いは、基本的に光散乱面における改質領域の面積に影響されると考えられる。そのため、グラフG5に示されるように、改質領域21Rを全面に形成した光散乱面21を有するシンチレータ2Aでは、第1の光検出器12に近い領域で発生したシンチレーション光を第1の光検出器12により検出した場合の光出力と、第1の光検出器12から遠い領域で発生したシンチレーション光を第1の光検出器12により検出した場合の光出力との差である光出力差D2が最も大きくなる。
 一方、グラフG6に示されるように、光散乱面を有しないシンチレータでは、光出力差D3は最も小さくなる。本実施形態に係る光散乱面22の改質領域22Rの面積は、任意の値に設定することが可能である。そのため、本実施形態に係る光散乱面22を有するシンチレータ2Bでは、光出力差D2と光出力差D3との間の大きさを有するように光出力差D1を設定することが可能である。従って、本実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Bによれば、第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14に到達する光量を自在に制御することができるので、第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14により検出された光出力の比に基づいて発光領域を更に精度良く特定することが可能となり、放射線検出器1Bは良好な位置検出特性を実現することができる。
 次に、上述した第2実施形態による放射線検出器1Bの様々な変形例について説明する。第2実施形態の光散乱面22では、非改質領域22Nが改質領域22Rにより囲まれている。改質領域22R及び非改質領域22Nの形状及び配置はこれに限られることはなく、様々な変形が可能である。
<変形例1>
 図7は、変形例1に係る放射線検出器1Cの概観と内部構成とを示す図である。本変形例に係る放射線検出器1Cは、複数の光散乱面23を有するシンチレータ2Cと、第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14と、反射部19とを備える。本変形例に係る放射線検出器1Cは、第2実施形態に係る光散乱面22とは異なる光散乱面23を有している点で、第2実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Bと異なっている。なお、第1の光検出器12及び第2の光検出器14、及び反射部19の構成及び配置は、上述した第2実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Bと同様であるため、詳細な説明は省略する。
 シンチレータ2Cの結晶塊10Cの内部には、複数の光散乱面23が形成されている。光散乱面23は、複数の改質領域23R(複数の第3の領域)と、改質領域23Rが形成されていない複数の非改質領域23N(複数の第4の領域)とを有している。この複数の改質領域23Rは、結晶塊10Cの内部にレーザ光を照射することにより好適に形成される。そして、改質領域23Rと非改質領域23Nとは、市松模様状に配置されている。
 本変形例のように、複数の光散乱面23が形成されたシンチレータ2Cを備える放射線検出器1Cであっても、上述した第2実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Bの効果を好適に得ることができる。
<変形例2>
 図8(a)は、上述した第2実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Bの変形例2に係る放射線検出器の光散乱面24の構成を示す図である。第1の端面11(図5参照)は四角形状である。更に、光散乱面24は、第1の端面11における一の対角線に沿った方向に延びた改質領域と、第1の端面11における他の対角線に沿った方向に延びた改質領域とにより構成される改質領域24Rを有している。本変形例のように、改質領域24Rを有する光散乱面24を備える放射線検出器であっても、上述した第2実施形態に係る発明の効果を好適に得ることができる。
<変形例3>
 図8(b)は、上述した第2実施形態の変形例3に係る放射線検出器の光散乱面25の構成を示す図である。光散乱面25は、光散乱面25の面内における所定の方向(第2の方向)に延びた複数の改質領域25Rを有し、改質領域25Rは、所定の方向と略直交する方向に沿って互いに間隔をあけて配置されている。複数の改質領域25Rのそれぞれは、改質領域25Rが形成されていない非改質領域25Nに囲まれている。本変形例のように、改質領域25Rを有する光散乱面25を備える放射線検出器であっても、上述した第2実施形態に係る発明の効果を好適に得ることができる。
<変形例4>
 図9(a)は、上述した第2実施形態の変形例4に係る放射線検出器の光散乱面26の構成を示す図である。第1の端面11(図5参照)は四角形状である。光散乱面26は、4つの改質領域26Rを有し、改質領域26Rは、光散乱面26の四隅のそれぞれに配置されている。例えば、4つの改質領域26Rのそれぞれは、略正方形状である。改質領域26Rが形成されていない非改質領域26Nは、略十字状に形成されている。本変形例のように、改質領域26Rを有する光散乱面26を備える放射線検出器であっても、上述した第3実施形態に係る発明の効果を好適に得ることができる。
<変形例5>
 図9(b)は、上述した第2実施形態の変形例5に係る放射線検出器の光散乱面27の構成を示す図である。光散乱面27は、光散乱面27の縁部の一部又は全部に沿った方向に延びた改質領域27Rを有する。改質領域27Rは、例えば、四角形状である光散乱面27の4つの縁部27a~27dのうち、一の縁部27aと、一の縁部27aとは反対側の他の縁部27cとに形成されていてもよい。本変形例では、改質領域27Rと、改質領域が形成されていない非改質領域27Nとは、縞状に配置されている。本変形例のように、改質領域27Rを有する光散乱面27を備える放射線検出器であっても、上述した第2実施形態に係る発明の効果を好適に得ることができる。
<実施例1>
 次に、上述した放射線検出器1Aを用いた実施例1について説明する。図10は、PET装置の一部を構成する放射線検出器ユニット50の構成を示す斜視図である。この放射線検出器ユニット50は、複数の放射線検出器アレイ51を備えている。放射線検出器アレイ51は、シンチレータアレイ52と、第1の光検出器アレイ53と、第2の光検出器アレイ54とを備えている。シンチレータアレイ52を構成するシンチレータ2A(図1参照)の第1の端面11に、第1の光検出器アレイ53を構成する第1の光検出器12が光学的に結合され、第2の端面13に第2の光検出器アレイ54を構成する第2の光検出器14が光学的に結合されて第1実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Aを構成している。
 複数の放射線検出器アレイ51のそれぞれは、測定対象Tを中心とする円の円周に沿って配置されている。また、放射線検出器アレイ51は、シンチレータアレイ52の側面52aと測定対象Tとが対向するように配置されている。このような放射線検出器ユニット50において、同時計数を行う放射線検出器アレイ51の組は、一の放射線検出器アレイ51と、該放射線検出器アレイ51とは反対側にある他の複数の放射線検出器アレイ51とにより構成されている。
<実施例2>
 次に、上述した放射線検出器1Aを用いた実施例2について説明する。図11は、PET装置の一部を構成する放射線検出器ユニット60の構成を示す図である。この放射線検出器ユニット60は、複数の放射線検出器アレイ61を備えている。放射線検出器アレイ61は、シンチレータアレイ62と、第1の光検出器アレイ63と、第2の光検出器アレイ64とを備えている。シンチレータアレイ62を構成するシンチレータ2A(図1参照)の第1の端面11に、第1の光検出器アレイ63を構成する第1の光検出器12が光学的に結合され、第2の端面13に第2の光検出器アレイ64を構成する第2の光検出器14が光学的に結合されて第1実施形態に係る放射線検出器1Aを構成している。
 複数の放射線検出器アレイ61のそれぞれは、測定対象Tを中心とする円の円周に沿って配置されている。また、放射線検出器アレイ61は、第1の光検出器アレイ63の裏面63aと測定対象Tとが対向するように配置されている。このような放射線検出器ユニット60において、同時計数を行う放射線検出器アレイ61の組は、一の放射線検出器アレイ61と、該放射線検出器アレイ61とは反対側にある他の複数の放射線検出器アレイ61とにより構成されている。
 本発明による放射線検出器によれば、容易に製造でき、且つ良好な位置検出特性を実現できる。

Claims (9)

  1.  放射線を検出する放射線検出器であって、
     第1の端面、前記第1の端面の反対側にある第2の端面、及び前記第1の端面側から前記第2の端面側に向かう第1の方向に沿って互いに間隔をあけて形成された複数の光散乱面を有するシンチレータと、
     前記第1の端面と光学的に結合された第1の光検出器と、
     前記第2の端面と光学的に結合された第2の光検出器と、を備え、
     前記光散乱面は、前記第1の方向と交わるように形成され、
     前記光散乱面は、前記シンチレータの内部にレーザ光を照射することにより形成された一又は複数の改質領域を含む放射線検出器。
  2.  前記改質領域は、互いに重なり合う複数の改質スポットから構成されている請求項1に記載の放射線検出器。
  3.  前記光散乱面は、前記改質領域が前記光散乱面の全面に形成されて成る請求項1又は2に記載の放射線検出器。
  4.  前記光散乱面は、前記改質領域が形成された第1の領域と前記改質領域が形成されていない第2の領域とを有し、前記第2の領域は前記第1の領域によって囲まれている請求項1又は2に記載の放射線検出器。
  5.  前記光散乱面は、前記改質領域が形成された複数の第3の領域と前記改質領域が形成されていない複数の第4の領域とを有し、前記第3の領域と前記第4の領域とが市松模様状に配置されている請求項1又は2に記載の放射線検出器。
  6.  前記第1の端面は四角形状であり、前記光散乱面は、前記第1の端面における一の対角線に沿った方向に延びた第1の前記改質領域と、前記第1の端面における他の対角線に沿った方向に延びた第2の前記改質領域とを有する請求項1又は2に記載の放射線検出器。
  7.  前記光散乱面は、第2の方向に延びた前記複数の改質領域を有し、前記複数の改質領域は、前記第2の方向と略直交する方向に沿って互いに間隔をあけて配置されている請求項1又は2に記載の放射線検出器。
  8.  前記第1の端面は四角形状であり、前記光散乱面は4つの前記改質領域を有し、前記改質領域は前記光散乱面の四隅のそれぞれに配置されている請求項1又は2に記載の放射線検出器。
  9.  前記光散乱面は、前記光散乱面の縁部の一部又は全部に沿った方向に延びた前記改質領域を有する請求項1又は2に記載の放射線検出器。
