また、第1のイオン伝導体6が触媒粒子2を被覆するように配置されており且つ第2のイオン伝導体8が第1のイオン伝導体6及び導電性担体4の露出部分を被覆するように配置されている。
ここで、平均被覆厚み(tionomer)は、下記(1)式から算出される。
同図に示すように、アニオン伝導性を有する第1のイオン伝導体6が触媒粒子2に接して配置されることにより、触媒粒子2の近傍が塩基性環境下となるため、触媒粒子2と第1のイオン伝導体6との界面においては、下記(3)式で表される水素酸化反応が進行する。更に、第1のイオン伝導体6を第2のイオン伝導体8で被覆するため、第1のイオン伝導体6と第2のイオン伝導体8との界面においては、下記(4)式で表される水解離反応が進行する。このようにして、触媒粒子2の近傍において水のサイクルが行われ、水バランスを変えることができる。

第1のイオン伝導体としては、アニオン伝導性を有するものであれば特に限定されるものではないが、アニオン伝導性を有するイオン伝導性ポリマーであることが望ましい。また、水及びガスの透過能を有するものであることが望ましい。
アニオン伝導性を有するイオン伝導性ポリマーとしては、例えばアニオン(水酸化物イオンOH−)を移動させることのできる種々の樹脂を用いることができる。具体的には、スチレン−ビニルベンジルトリアルキルアンモニウム共重合体、N,N−ジアルキルアルキレンアンモニウム、ポリビニルベンジルトリアルキルアンモニウム(PVBTMA)、ポリビニルアルキルトリアルキルアンモニウム、アルキレン−ビニルアルキレントリアルキルアンモニウム共重合体等が挙げられる。その中でも、化学的安定性に優れるという理由から、スチレン−ビニルベンジルトリアルキルアンモニウム共重合体、PVBTMAを用いることが望ましい。
カチオン伝導性を有するイオン伝導性ポリマーとしては、例えばカチオン(水素イオンH+)を移動させることのできる種々の樹脂を用いることができる。例えば、スルホン酸樹脂、ホスホン酸樹脂、カルボン酸樹脂、イミド樹脂等を用いることが好適である。
図4は、本発明の一実施形態に係る膜電極接合体の一例を示す説明図である。同図に示すように、本実施形態の燃料電池用電極は、上述した本発明の一実施形態に係る燃料電池用電極をアノード及びカソードに用いたものである。
また、燃料電池用電極は、触媒粒子を導電性担体に担持して成る電極触媒と、該電極触媒を被覆するアニオン伝導性を有する第1のイオン伝導体及びカチオン伝導性を有する第2のイオン伝導体とを含む電極材を含有するものである。
なお、電極材においては、第1のイオン伝導体が触媒粒子を被覆するように配置されており且つ第2のイオン伝導体が第1のイオン伝導体及び導電性担体の露出部分を被覆するように配置されている。
アノード及びカソードにおける反応機構は上述したとおりであるが、正味の反応としては、下記(7)式で表される反応が進行する。
電解質膜は、カチオン伝導性を有するイオン伝導体であれば特に限定されるものではないが、カチオン伝導性を有するイオン伝導性ポリマーであることが望ましい。
カチオン伝導性を有するイオン伝導性ポリマーとしては、例えばカチオン(水素イオンH+)を移動させることのできる種々の樹脂を用いることができる。例えば、上述したスルホン酸樹脂、ホスホン酸樹脂、カルボン酸樹脂、イミド樹脂等を用いることができる。

次いで、金属の触媒粒子を担持した導電性担体とアニオン伝導性を有する第1のイオン伝導体と第1のイオン伝導体の溶媒とを混合する。このとき、第1のイオン伝導体は、電極触媒全体を被覆しない程度の割合で添加し、混合、濃縮する。なお、濃縮して乾燥させることにより、再度同種又は異種の溶媒に添加した場合であっても、溶解し難くなる。また、この工程は数回の予備試験(調製及び乾燥後における走査型電子顕微鏡による観察)をすることによって、所望の構造が形成されているか否かの確認を行う。また、第1のイオン伝導体は、その性質上、導電性担体(例えばカーボン)に比して金属の触媒粒子に吸着し易いため、添加量を少なくすることによって、第1のイオン伝導体が触媒粒子のみを被覆するようにすることが可能となる。
更に、カチオン伝導性を有する第2のイオン伝導体と第2のイオン伝導体の溶媒(但し、第1のイオン伝導体に対する溶解性が高くないものを用いることが望ましい。)を添加し、混合する。
しかる後、得られた混合物を電解質膜に直接スプレー塗布又は転写材(例えばフィルムやガス拡散層など。)にスプレー塗布し、それを電解質膜に転写する。このようにして、膜電極接合体を得ることができる。
電極触媒としてKetjenblackにPtを50質量%担持した白金担持カーボンと水及びNPA(1−プロパノール)とをサンドグラインダー(アイメックス社製)の容器に投入して粉砕した。
次いで、アニオン伝導性を有する第1のイオン伝導体としてのアニオン交換型(伝導性)アイオノマー(トクヤマ社製、AS−3)を電極触媒に対する第1のイオン伝導体の割合(第1のイオン伝導体/カーボン)が質量比で0.2となるように添加し、混合して濃縮した。乾燥後、SEMにて確認したところ、触媒粒子が第1のイオン伝導体で被覆されており、更に導電性担体の一部が露出していることが確認できた。
更に、カチオン伝導性を有する第2のイオン伝導体としてのカチオン交換型(伝導性)アイオノマー(デュポン社製、ナフィオン(登録商標)D2020)を電極触媒に対する第2のイオン伝導体の割合(第2のイオン伝導体/カーボン)が質量比で0.8となるように添加して混合した。
得られた混合物をPTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)の片面にスプレー塗布して、本例の燃料電池用電極(アノード用)を形成した。白金使用量は0.35mg/cm2であった。
一方、電極触媒としてKetjenblackにPtを50質量%担持した白金担持カーボンと水及びNPA(1−プロパノール)とをサンドグラインダー(アイメックス社製)の容器に投入して粉砕した。次いで、カチオン伝導性を有するイオン伝導体としてのカチオン交換型アイオノマー(デュポン社製、ナフィオン(登録商標)D2020)を電極触媒に対するイオン伝導体の割合(イオン伝導体/カーボン)が質量比で1.0となるように添加して混合した。得られた混合物をPTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)の片面にスプレー塗布して、本例で用いる燃料電池用電極(カソード用)を形成した。白金使用量は0.35mg/cm2であった。
電解質膜(デュポン社製、ナフィオン(登録商標)NR211、厚み:25μm)の両面の周囲にガスケット(帝人Dupont社製、テオネックス、厚み:25μm(接着層:10μm))を配置し、電解質膜の露出部(作用面積:25cm2(5.0cm×5.0cm))に燃料電池用電極(アノード用)及び燃料電池用電極(カソード用)を形成したPTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)を配置し、0.8MPaの圧力を加えて、電解質膜と各燃料電池用電極を密着させて、150℃で、10分間加熱し、電解質膜と各燃料電池用電極を接合して、本例の膜電極接合体を得た。
なお、白金担持カーボン中の白金の割合は50質量%であり、アニオン交換型アイオノマー/カーボンの重量比は0.2である。また、「白金担持カーボン中の白金の割合」や「アニオン交換型アイオノマー/カーボンの重量比」は、例えば仕込み量やカタログ値から分かるものであり、白金の被覆面積は、COパルス法などの測定やカタログ値から分かるものである。
電極触媒としてKetjenblackにPtを50質量%担持した白金担持カーボンと水及びNPA(1−プロパノール)とをサンドグラインダー(アイメックス社製)の容器に投入して粉砕した。
次いで、アニオン伝導性を有する第1のイオン伝導体としてのアニオン交換型アイオノマー(トクヤマ社製、AS−3)を電極触媒に対する第1のイオン伝導体の割合(第1のイオン伝導体/カーボン)が質量比で0.2となるように添加し、混合して濃縮した。乾燥後、SEMにて確認したところ、触媒粒子が第1のイオン伝導体で被覆されており、更に導電性担体の一部が露出していることが確認できた。
更に、カチオン伝導性を有する第2のイオン伝導体としてのカチオン交換型アイオノマー(デュポン社製、ナフィオン(登録商標)D2020)を電極触媒に対する第2のイオン伝導体の割合(第2のイオン伝導体/カーボン)が質量比で0.8となるように添加して混合した。
得られた混合物をPTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)の片面にスプレー塗布して、本例の燃料電池用電極(カソード用)を形成した。白金使用量は0.35mg/cm2であった。

更に、カチオン伝導性を有する第2のイオン伝導体としてのカチオン交換型アイオノマー(デュポン社製、ナフィオン(登録商標)D2020)を電極触媒に対する第2のイオン伝導体の割合(第2のイオン伝導体/カーボン)が質量比で0.5となるように添加して混合した。
得られた混合物をPTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)の片面にスプレー塗布して、本例の燃料電池用電極(アノード用)を形成した。白金使用量は0.35mg/cm2であった。
一方、電極触媒としてKetjenblackにPtを50質量%担持した白金担持カーボンと水及びNPA(1−プロパノール)とをサンドグラインダー(アイメックス社製)の容器に投入して粉砕した。次いで、カチオン伝導性を有するイオン伝導体としてのカチオン交換型アイオノマー(デュポン社製、ナフィオン(登録商標)D2020)を電極触媒に対するイオン伝導体の割合(イオン伝導体/カーボン)が質量比で1.0となるように添加して混合した。得られた混合物をPTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)の片面にスプレー塗布して、本例で用いる燃料電池用電極(カソード用)を形成した。白金使用量は0.35mg/cm2であった。
電解質膜(デュポン社製、ナフィオン(登録商標)NR211、厚み:25μm)の両面の周囲にガスケット(帝人Dupont社製、テオネックス、厚み:25μm(接着層:10μm))を配置し、電解質膜の露出部(作用面積:25cm2(5.0cm×5.0cm))に燃料電池用電極(アノード用)及び燃料電池用電極(カソード用)を形成したPTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)を配置し、0.8MPaの圧力を加えて、電解質膜と各燃料電池用電極を密着させて、150℃で、10分間加熱し、電解質膜と各燃料電池用電極を接合して、本例の膜電極接合体を得た。

更に、カチオン伝導性を有する第2のイオン伝導体としてのカチオン交換型アイオノマー(デュポン社製、ナフィオン(登録商標)D2020)を電極触媒に対する第2のイオン伝導体の割合(第2のイオン伝導体/カーボン)が質量比で0.2となるように添加して混合した。
得られた混合物をPTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)の片面にスプレー塗布して、本例の燃料電池用電極(カソード用)を形成した。白金使用量は0.35mg/cm2であった。

電解質膜(デュポン社製、ナフィオン(登録商標)NR211、厚み:25μm)の両面の周囲にガスケット(帝人Dupont社製、テオネックス、厚み:25μm(接着層:10μm))を配置し、電解質膜の露出部(作用面積:25cm2(5.0cm×5.0cm)に燃料電池用電極(アノード用)及び燃料電池用電極(カソード用)を形成したPTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)を配置し、0.8MPaの圧力を加えて、電解質膜と各燃料電池用電極を密着させて、150℃で、10分間加熱し、電解質膜と各燃料電池用電極を接合して、本例の膜電極接合体を得た。
電極触媒としてKetjenblackにPtを50質量%担持した白金担持カーボンと水及びNPA(1−プロパノール)とをサンドグラインダー(アイメックス社製)の容器に投入して粉砕した。
次いで、アニオン伝導性を有するイオン伝導体としてのアニオン交換型アイオノマー(トクヤマ社製、AS−3)を電極触媒に対するイオン伝導体の割合(イオン伝導体/カーボン)が質量比で1.0となるように添加して混合した。
得られた混合物を2つのPTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)の片面にスプレー塗布して、本例で用いる燃料電池用電極(アノード用)及び燃料電池用電極(カソード用)を形成した。なお、それぞれの白金使用量は0.35mg/cm2であった。
電解質膜(デュポン社製、ナフィオン(登録商標)NR211、厚み:25μm)の両面の周囲にガスケット(帝人Dupont社製、テオネックス、厚み:25μm(接着層:10μm))を配置し、電解質膜の露出部(作用面積:25cm2(5.0cm×5.0cm)に燃料電池用電極(アノード用)及び燃料電池用電極(カソード用)を形成したPTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)を配置し、0.8MPaの圧力を加えて、電解質膜と各燃料電池用電極を密着させて、150℃で、10分間加熱し、電解質膜と各燃料電池用電極を接合して、本例の膜電極接合体を得た。
各例の膜電極接合体についてガス拡散層(SGL GROUP製、25BC)で挟持して評価セルに組み込んだ後、低加湿条件(流速一定(FR const.)、アノード相対湿度(RHa)20%、カソード相対湿度(RHc)20%、アノード圧力(Pa)100kPa−g(ゲージ圧)、カソード圧力(Pc)100kPa−g)及び高加湿条件(流速一定(FR const.)、アノード相対湿度(RHa)90%、カソード相対湿度(RHc)90%)、アノード圧力(Pa)100kPa−g、カソード圧力(Pc)100kPa−g)において、各電流密度(Current density)に対するセル電圧(Cell voltage)と抵抗(Resistivity)を測定した。
得られた結果を図5及び図6に示す。なお、セル電圧については実線により、抵抗については破線により示す。
図5及び図6より、低加湿条件下及び高加湿条件下において、実施例1及び実施例2は、比較例1と同等の発電性能が得られることが分かる。また、図5より、低加湿条件下において、実施例1においては、若干であるが発電性能が上がっていることが分かる。
各例で得られた燃料電池用電極について、温度80℃、相対湿度100%の条件下、可逆水素電極(Potential vs.RHE)を基準として、電流密度(Current density)を測定した。
得られた結果を図7に示す。
図7により、実施例1と比較例1はプロトン吸脱着ピーク及び白金酸化還元ピークが異なることが分かる。Pt量が同じであるにもかかわらずピーク形状が異なるため、実施例1においてはナフィオン(登録商標)以外のものにより電極触媒が被覆されていることが分かり、所望の構造が形成されていることが分かる。つまり、アニオン伝導性(水酸化物イオン伝導性)を有する第1のイオン伝導性ポリマーが触媒粒子である白金を被覆するように直接配置されており、カチオン伝導性(水素イオン伝導性)を有する第2のイオン伝導性ポリマーが第1のイオン伝導性ポリマー及び導電性担体であるカーボンの露出部分を被覆するように直接配置されている。この被覆により、触媒粒子である白金の溶出(劣化)が抑制されると推測される。また、この被覆により、触媒粒子の近傍が塩基性環境下となり且つ他の部分が酸性環境下となり、水サイクルが触媒近傍で行われ、水バランスを変えることができると推測される。
また、アノード及びカソードの両方に適用した場合にも、上述した効果と同様の効果が得られると推測される。

Claims (9)
- 触媒粒子を導電性担体に担持して成る電極触媒と、該電極触媒を被覆するアニオン伝導性を有する第1のイオン伝導体及びカチオン伝導性を有する第2のイオン伝導体とを含む電極材を含有する燃料電池用電極であって、
上記第1のイオン伝導体が上記触媒粒子を被覆するように配置されており且つ上記第2のイオン伝導体が上記第1のイオン伝導体及び上記導電性担体の露出部分を被覆するように配置されていることを特徴とする燃料電池用電極。 - 上記第1のイオン伝導体が上記触媒粒子と接して配置されており且つ上記第2のイオン伝導体が上記第1のイオン伝導体及び上記導電性担体と接して配置されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の燃料電池用電極。
- 上記第1のイオン伝導体と上記第2のイオン伝導体とがイオン伝導性ポリマーであることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の燃料電池用電極。
- 上記第1のイオン伝導体が水酸化物イオン伝導性を有し、上記第2のイオン伝導体が水素イオン伝導性を有することを特徴とする請求項1~3のいずれか1つの項に記載の燃料電池用電極。
- 上記触媒粒子が、白金、イリジウム、パラジウム、ルテニウム、金、銀、銅、ニッケル、コバルト、鉄、タングステン、クロム、モリブデン、タンタル、ニオブ、チタン及びジルコニウムからなる群より選ばれる少なくとも1種の元素を含む単体、合金、酸化物、窒化物、炭化物、金属錯体並びにこれらの複合体からなる群より選ばれる少なくとも1種のものを含有することを特徴とする請求項1~4のいずれか1つの項に記載の燃料電池用電極。
- 上記導電性担体が、カーボン、導電性酸化物、導電性窒化物、導電性炭化物及びこれらの複合体からなる群より選ばれる少なくとも1種のものを含有することを特徴とする請求項1~5のいずれか1つの項に記載の燃料電池用電極。
- 請求項1~6のいずれか1つの項に記載の燃料電池用電極をアノードに用いたことを特徴とする膜電極接合体。
- 請求項1~6のいずれか1つの項に記載の燃料電池用電極をカソードに用いたことを特徴とする膜電極接合体。
- 請求項1~6のいずれか1つの項に記載の燃料電池用電極をアノード及びカソードに用いたことを特徴とする膜電極接合体。
