Definitions

  • Foldable child safety seat suitable for restraining a child in a vehicle
  • This invention concerns a child safety seat for restraining a child in a vehicle.
  • the invention's design is unique because it is possible to fold up the child seat into a very compact shape so that it takes up a minimum of space in the boot of a car, for instance, after the child safety seat has been folded up.
  • Most of the currently available child safety seats are typically designed as a child safety seat with a back rest, where in most cases the chair bottom and back rest are permanently attached to one another.
  • the familiar chair designs usually involve constructions where both the chair bottom and back rest are made of the same material and often made in the same moulding process.
  • There are other familiar child safety seats where it is possible to fold down the back rest against the seat bottom for the very purpose of making the child safety seat as compact as possible.
  • One aim of the present invention is to make a child safety seat with special backrest fittings that are designed so the back rest can pivot on a central shaft in the back rest, after which both the chair bottom and back rest can be folded into an even more compact shape than ordinary child safety seats.
  • the first example of this shown in the periodical "WO 2005/01233, was a child safety seat whose chair bottom and back rest (6) are hinged
  • a fourth example from US patent document no. 5 785 383, describes an infant safety seat with chair bottoms which restrain infants placed in a vehicle.
  • the infant safety seat is made up of an upper back rest which pivots around a horizontal shaft via a hinge.
  • Child safety seats of the above-mentioned type have a number of undesirable aspects.
  • these child safety seats cannot be folded or rotated into very compact shapes, because the well-known child seats are equipped with side protrusions in both the back rest and chair bottom to keep the child from sliding sideways out of the child safety seat.
  • these protrusions prevent the back rest and chair bottom from being folded into a very compact shape, because when the protrusions come in contact with one another, they prevent further folding of the two sections.
  • a second aspect of ordinary child safety seats is that they are shaped so the chair-bottom surface is concave for ergonomic reasons, which is also true of the back rest that is also concave.
  • these concave shapes of the back rest and chair bottom create a geometric cavity between chair bottom and back rest.
  • these two oppositely facing concave surfaces of the chair bottom and back rest will create an air space whose sole purpose is to ensure that child safety seats are comfortable and ergonomic.
  • the present invention produces a child safety seat with a back rest and chair bottom which are interconnected by fittings that make it possible to fold up the back rest and chair bottom to become much more compact than ordinary child safety seats.
  • Ordinary child safety seats are made both with concave surfaces for chair bottom and back rest and with side protrusions.
  • Another advantage of the present invention is that the child safety seat is movably joined using a special flexible fitting connecting the chair bottom to the back rest, so that the back rest and chair bottom can be moved differently in relation to one another, which includes linear, rotating and pivoting movements.
  • the flexible fitting is designed so that it can be properly locked to keep the child safety seat in the position preferred, and the fitting is capable of withstanding forces which arise when a vehicle is involved in a collision.
  • a third advantage is that it is simple to operate the flexible fitting using a handle connected to the fitting's release mechanism. This handle is also located on the exterior rear surface of the back rest, so it is not possible to unintentionally unlock the child safety seat once it has been placed in the vehicle.
  • a fourth advantage is that when the child safety seat is folded up, it is possible to sit on top of the child safety seat making it possible for older children to use the child safety seat, and also making it easier for them to look out of vehicle windows. Moreover, when folded up, the child safety seat is very compact and, stowing the child safety seat takes up very little space in the vehicle's boot when the child safety seat is not in use.
  • the back rest is made with one or more grip hooks which mesh with a horizontal shaft positioned on the hindmost edge of the chair bottom.
  • the invention specified is based on the design of back and seat as shells, that can be manufactured by injection moulding or plastic blow moulding, making it possible to manufacture the child.safety seat in a manner that keeps costs very modest compared to ordinary child safety seats.

  • Figure 3 shows a top view of the child safety seat and back rest shown in Figure 1.
  • Figures 4 and 4A show the child safety seat shown in Figure 1 , with the chair bottom and back rest meshed with one another via grip hooks and the horizontal shaft in the chair bottom.
