Definitions
- This invention relates to a steering device for boats, consisting of a power source, such as an electric motor, which is connected to a blade, which can be actuated by the motor to move in the water so as to transmit a propulsive force to the boat.
- a power source such as an electric motor
- a blade which can be actuated by the motor to move in the water so as to transmit a propulsive force to the boat.
- Old-time steam-ships used to have vane wheels provided on each side of the ship, with the vanes touching the water surface, thus generating the propulsive force for the ship.
- a steam-ship is basically a powered rowing boat, in which the oar blades have been radially fastened to the ends of a shaft mounted across the ship.
- the propeller has been invented, which is a screw, or actually part of a screw, serving for force transmission in the axial direction.
- This invention has the purpose of providing a new type of steering device for boats, which is unlike the above solutions known per se.
- the steering device in accordance with the invention is characterised in that the blade is a fin penetrating through the bottom of the boat and connected to the flywheel/lever of the motor, which transmits a rotatory movement to the upper part of the fin and in that the fin is supported and guided in an elongated opening through the bottom of the boat, in which the fin is allowed upward and downward movement while the lower part of the fin describes an onion-shaped rotatory movement under the boat. Consequently, with the aid of the invention, a very straightforward steering device generates strong propulsion for any boat by means of a fin actuated in the water under the bottom of the boat.
- This propulsion can replace the propelling/steering movement generated by the thruster of a sailing boat, for instance.
- the thruster of a sailing boat is located in a passage in the prow of the boat. Such a passage always generates turbulence in the water, which in turn acts as a braking force.
- the invention is chiefly intended for use as a thruster in a sailing boat, but is also applicable to motor boats and ships. While the steering device is unoperated, the fin is retracted into the hull so as to provide an even surface on the bottom of the boat. The device does not generate any kind of braking forces.
- Figure 1 is a longitudinal view of the steering device
- Figure 2 is a lateral view of the steering device
- Figure 3 is a top view of the steering device
- Figure 4 is an axonometric view of the steering device
- Figure 5 illustrates the movement of the fin of the steering device viewed in the longitudinal direction of the boat.
- Th steering device for boats consists of a power source, such as an electric motor 1, which is connected to a blade 2, which can be actuated by the motor 1 to move in the water so as to transmit a propulsive force to the boat.
- the blade is an even plate- like fin 2 penetrating through the bottom of the boat and connected to the flywheel 9 of the motor, which transmits a rotatory movement 3 to the upper part of the fin 2.
- the fin is supported and guided in an elongated opening 5 through the bottom 4 of the boat, in which the fin is allowed upward and downward movement while the lower part of the fin describes an onion-shaped rotatory movement 6 under the boat.
- the opening 5 in the bottom of the boat 4 is provided with a water-proof slide bearing, which is an elongated revolving shaft 7 having an elongated water-proof opening, in which the fin 2 is allowed reciprocating movements while sealed from the water.
- the steering device is mounted in a water-proof housing 8.
- An automatic bilge-water pump can be provided within the housing 8 in the event that slight leakage would occur in the sliding bearing after heavy use, for instance.
- a pin 10 is provided on the outer circumference of the flywheel 9 of the motor, the fin 2 being fastened to this pin.
- the flywheel 9 can be provided with a counterbalance with a view to achieve balance.
- a reduction gear 11 is provided between the motor 1 and the flywheel 9 (not indispensable).
- the steering device is equipped with control electronics known per se, by means of which the boat can be steered.
- the steering device has the following operation:
- the operation of the device is based on the specific movement of the fin.
- the fin 2 plunges into the water in an oblique position from the upper side of the boat bottom 4 while revolving simultaneously, so that it brings the boat into movement. Having reached its one extreme position, the fin rises back to a position above the bottom and is turned by a mechanism into its other extreme position above the bottom, where the following cycle starts as the fin replunges while revolving in an oblique position under the bottom.
- the operating direction of the propeller is reversed by reversing the rotating direction of the device.
- the invention has the following essential features: the fin penetrates through the boat bottom to plunge into the water at the very same point where it rises from the water back to the upper side of the bottom, and the fin articulated in the bottom is capable of generating a propulsive force for the boat.
- the steering device has the following additional functions:
- the fin can be turned up in the direction of the vertical axis, where it acts as a "propeller” without a shaft or a hub.
- the device can be used as "main propulsion" in forward movement, either in sailing boats, when a bottom with a maximally even surface is desired during sailing, or in boats penetrating through reeds. It could also be used as the main propulsive force in fast-moving ships, and then only the tip portion would have a surface area, or a semi-passage could be provided in the bottom, so that only the tip portion is in the water when the ship rises to glide on the water surface.
