Definitions

  • the invention relates to a method of manufacturing a housing for a coupling for coupling a trailer to a tow ball.
  • the invention more particularly relates to a method of manufacturing a relatively complex housing which comprises a first chamber in which a clamping body can be displaced for clamping a ball of the ball bar and which has an opening for receiving the ball, as well as a second chamber which has a further opening for receiving a handle for displacing the clamping body, a partition wall being positioned between the two chambers.
  • a method of this type is generally known.
  • the coupling should be embodied in a more powerful or less powerful design.
  • the strength of the coupling is mainly determined by the material the coupling is made of and the wall thickness of the housing of the coupling.
  • the housings are made from sheet portions either bent or not and welded together.
  • For each housing with a different wall thickness there should be at least one piece of tool present attuned to this wall thickness.
  • the cost price would become too high, so that couplings of this type are not available for the entire range.
  • the method according to the invention is characterised in that first a model of the housing is created in wax, then a mould of a refractory material is formed around this model, subsequently the mould and the model are heated so that the wax model melts and the wax flows out of the mould and the mould cures, after which the material the housing is to be made of is poured in liquid state into the mould and the mould is removed once the material has cured.
  • any desired model of housing By casting the housing with the what is called 'lost wax method' it is possible for any desired model of housing to be manufactured in a cost-covering manner.
  • a model that has a large wall thickness, of which the wall thickness can be reduced in a simple manner it may be sufficient to manufacture a single model for any desired housing.
  • the wall thickness of the model of the housing can be reduced for example by locally heating the model or by planing the walls.
  • the housing can be cast from any desired material without the need for taking notably cost increasing measures for this.
  • This is contrary to the known method in which sheet portions are to be bent and welded together.
  • this operation it is not possible without complications to process sheets of any desired material with the same tools, but different tools are needed for working with different materials.
  • the housing for a coupling for a trailer by casting it.
  • the cast housings have a relatively simple shape, so that they can be cast with a relatively cost-efficient casting process and not with the relatively expensive 'lost wax method'.
  • no housings with different wall thicknesses are cast for these known housings, so that housings cannot be manufactured for a wide range of applications.
  • An additional advantage of this casting method is that after the casting operation there is no stress left in the housing, so that critical portions can be manufactured with higher accuracy and fewer or no finishing operations need be carried out to reach the desired accuracy.
  • various component parts may be integrated with the housing so that the coupling may be composed of fewer parts, which in its turn is cost-saving as a result of which the method according to the invention is even more economically justified, whereas it did not seem to be in the first instance.
  • An embodiment of the method according to the invention is characterised in that after the wax model of the housing has been created, the wall thickness of the model is reduced where necessary before the mould around the model is made.
  • Fig. 1 shows a coupling provided with a housing which is cast according to the invented method
  • Fig. 2 shows the cast housing for the coupling shown in Fig. 1.
  • Fig. 1 shows a coupling 1 which is provided with a housing 3 which is cast according to the invented method.
  • the housing 3 (see also Fig. 2 showing the housing separately) has a first chamber 5 in which a clamping body 7 is slidable for clamping a ball 9 of the ball bar.
  • the bottom 11 of this chamber has an opening 13 for receiving the ball.
  • the housing 3 further has a second chamber 15. In the upper wall 17 of this chamber there is a further opening 19 for receiving a handle 21 for displacement of the clamping body 7.
  • a partition wall 23 is positioned between the two chambers 5 and 15.
  • the housing 3 is cast according to the what is called 'lost wax method'.
  • a model of the housing is created in wax.
  • a mould of refractory material is formed around this model.
  • the model and the mould are heated and the wax model melts and the wax flows out of the mould and the mould cures.
  • the material the housing is made of is poured in liquid state into the mould. Once the material has cured the mould is removed in the end.
